Echoes of the West...
I’ve been fascinated by the rich history of America’s West since my childhood. Western traditions, icons, materials and even certain color palettes continue to inspire and echo through design and lifestyle. In this issue, our Texas contributors offer a glimpse of the West in jewelry, photography, attire, home goods, food, architecture, local events, and travel!
Instead of making a resolution, I pray for a word to focus on each year. When I reflected on last year’s word, “Purpose”, I felt nudged in my prayer journey and by a dear friend’s suggestion to embrace “Hope” for 2025. There were moments of great joy in conversations and unexpected encounters that truly held a higher purpose...but was last year also very challenging for anyone else?! I am excited about focusing on this new season of Hope as both a noun and a verb as I lean into the One who never grows weary when I need renewed strength. Hope is often connected to change...whether it’s a way to navigate through circumstances beyond my control or address changes needed in order to open myself up to peace...and even more of God’s purpose.
May 2025 bring all of us restored hope and refreshed encouragement...and may this issue offer enjoyment through echoes of the West!
-Melissa
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31

TEXAS TALENT
Richard Schmidt is a fourthgeneration Texan and a talented jewelry designer based in the scenic countryside of Fayette County. Richard designs and makes jewelry in his two studios which are located in Round Top and La Grange. Known for his signature handmade hammered silver cuffs, Richard’s work also includes pendants, rings, and bracelets, characterized by a rustic and artistic style.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Richard’s journey began with an art minor specializing in metals at Texas State University. He returned to Fayette County in 1994 with his family to refine his jewelry making skills while working alongside his father. Largely self-taught, Richard has been crafting jewelry for over 30 years. A cornerstone of his work is his family’s involvement with his wife, Janet, managing the business; his daughter, Lauren, overseeing photography and social media; and his son, Tyler, designing and creating alongside him since 2014.
INSPIRED BY DAILY LIFE, AND THE BEAUTY OF TEXAS & THE faith,
Southwest
Handcrafted jewelry designs with modern style and rugged spirit, Richard’s pieces are stories told in metals and semi-precious stones. Richard works primarily with silver and gold and with a distinctive aesthetic of hammered and oxidized finishes. His soulfoul designs often incorporate turquoise, along with mother-of-pearl, spiny oyster, and diamonds; reflecting his appreciation for unique stones. Inspiration for his creations comes from his faith, daily life, and the beauty of Texas and the Southwest. In particular, he draws creative energy from Santa Fe, New Mexico. The region’s vibrant art, landscapes, and rich culture play into his creativity and design
RICHARD SCHMIDT GALLERY + STUDIO
One of Richard’s main studios and retail spaces is in Round Top, Texas, where there is a hub of activity during the renowned antique and design shows held three times annually. These events have played a vital role in expanding his business and introducing his work to a wider audience. At the gallery you will not only find Richard’s work, but an enjoyable visual retail experience...a thoughtfully curated collection of clothing, accessories, books, gifts, home goods and beyond that cumulatively reflect the family’s impeccable taste and style.

Richard and Janet spent about three years designing, collecting and building their current home in Round Top, Texas. After a few years of searching, they found the perfect piece of property to build their forever home. Once again, their personal style permeates throughout the property. A warm welcome awaits with inspiration and design elements from their love of Texas, a little touch of Old World...and the great Southwest. The result is a clean-lined modern house nestled in the woods. The Schmidts love to entertain! They enjoy spending time with friends and family around their dining table that seats 14. When designing their Round Top retreat, they made sure there was an inviting aesthetic and plenty of room for gathering and rich conversation.

“The mesmerizing slot canyons, located within the Navajo Nation near Page, Arizona, have been on my travel bucket list for many years. As a photographer, I had long anticipated the intense color and ever- changing light that I was to experience in these ancient sacred canyons. I genuinely respect the Navajo people and this entire area. The Antelope Canyons are known to them as "the place where water and wind run through the rocks" to continuously form them over the course of time. As I was immersed within the deep hollows of the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons, I realized within myself the transformation of visual admiration growing into a profound spiritual reverence for these magnificent cathedrals of nature. I felt the completeness of earth, water, wind and sky working in concert patiently sculpting these sacred canyons over the eons to allow me to capture these images. It seemed I could return day after day, perhaps to see yet another change in light, angle, texture or composition, but I left content with my photographs and what transpired within myself. As a photographer, I tend to view the world from the perspective of a camera lens, but more importantly I am learning that the most valuable perspective is found within oneself.”

Keeping the Culture of the Great American West Alive
FireWater Custom Leather is a one-man shop out of Ennis, Texas which focuses on holding onto the culture of the great American West within each custom order. The western way of life is valiant and rooted in social norms, values, and traditions that create a lifestyle that is sought after by many. Developing one-of-a-kind leather goods for clients everywhere, I'm a 7th-generation Texan whose leatherwork strives to keep the western culture as vibrant as it is meant to be.
The Meaning of Firewater
The Origin of the term "firewater" evolved hundreds of years ago and was primarily used in trade between Native Americans and settlers. Pelts of hide, fur, dried meat, and fine jewelry were all used for bartering with the settlers, which in trade, the Native Americans would receive whiskey. Those traders then became keenly aware that by diluting the whiskey with water, they would receive more bang for their buck. Trading then led to confrontations. Native Americans, realizing the scheme going on during these barters, got wise. They would take the whiskey from the traders and then pour a swig on the fire. Bad whiskey would quench the fire, while good whiskey would cause the fire to erupt. It was this simple experiment that gave way to the term, "firewater". Trading pelts of fur and leather for firewater impacted our country and the western way of life n those early years.
Growth and Opportunities
The past year has been full of growth and prosperity, and being able to invest more time into my custom leather business has shown great dividends. I am excited about the opportunities every day to increase business exponentially; and, not only locally, but on a national level as I pursue my goods becoming a staple in the western culture. The late nights and hard work have paid off in many ways, whether it was partnering with The National Polka Festival to make guitar straps for the headliners like Josh Abbot, or partnering with the Oklahoma Wildcatters PBR Team to supply each rider with a custom team belt.
Feelings, Scars, and Triumph
FireWater Custom Leather does its best to provide top grade custom leather for men, women and children around the nation. Inches at a time, every order is an honor in taking your inspiration to designing and cultivating it into fruition. I love working with leather that has lived a life just like we do--bearing feelings, scars, and triumph--but now it will continue to live through you.

SWISS HOSPITALITY + TEXAN CHARM = HÔTEL SWEXAN
Enter a realm of refinement at the exceptional Hôtel Swexan, where timeless elegance meets modern sophistication. This remarkable hotel seamlessly blends Swiss hospitality with Texan charm, offering an unforgettable experience characterized by meticulous attention to detail through both its professional staff and design features.
"Where curiosity meets wisdom. Old souls encounter the young at heart, and storytellers meet their match."
Hôtel Swexan is an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left. Every area is exquisite, with a story to tell. A highlight during my stay was a delightful tour with General Manager Julian Payne a tall, knowledgeable, and elegant man who epitomizes the highest standards of excellence. He graciously shared with me the inspiration behind the materials, themes, and finishes of this 2023 Harwood International gem in Dallas. As Julian unveiled the stories behind the influence of architecture, design, and the global travels of the owners, the Barbier-Mueller family, it became clear there’s something extraordinarily special awaiting discovery behind every grand door and there are a lot of gorgeous doors. While various European styles and a touch of Texas is reflected throughout, one central theme emerges: five-star luxury.

The Harwood District of Dallas
With the Barbier-Mueller family at the helm of Harwood International, this powerhouse corporation has meticulously planned and developed a vibrant, 19city block neighborhood. Here, Class AA office towers, luxury residences, retail spaces, restaurants, hotels, and pocket parks converge in a dynamic and walkable district. The story of Harwood began in 1979 when founder Gabriel Barbier-Mueller moved to Dallas from Geneva, Switzerland, with a vision to bring Swiss culture to Texas. He fell in love with our sunsets and also with Ann Smith, a true Texas gal whose family owned the E-Bar-S Ranch in Sunnyvale. This blending of Swiss hospitality and Texan charm began with a marriage, a family and a business dream with a theme. Today, along with their sons, Alexis and Oliver, the family continues to expand the Harwood District in Dallas while still operating offices in Geneva and London.
Design Details
The exterior of this 22-story masterpiece was designed by world-renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. It’s where sleek, tailored sophistication meets Samurai-inspired strength. Particularly mesmerizing on windy days, the sea of chain maille panels offers a soothing and welcoming wave to guests and passersby alike. Upon entering through the heavy doors, you're greeted by a small, understated lobby—an invitation to a journey of unparalleled materials, exquisite furnishings, high design, and collected art. Harwood International's own talented design team infused the interiors with the elegance and style of various European cities, with a strong Parisian influence. While exploring new restaurants and hotels with elaborate decor, I find myself additionally intrigued by restroom design. The Harwood design team certainly unleashed their creativity as it was fun to take a peek into the 26 restrooms across the hotel’s hospitality spaces and public areas. Each featured a unique theme, fixtures, tile, and lighting from elegant to opulent to sassy!

With a hair-on-hide rug, modern light fixtures, basket-woven seating, and an incredibly roomy marble tub-shower combination with skyline views, it was an unforgettable escape. Lavish Le Labo toiletries, impeccable service, and attention to detail made my stay extraordinary. Also, during my tour with Julian, we explored the other suites, including Room 1702, which boasts a massive bathroom featuring a black tub that fills with water from the ceiling while offering a stunning city view. Harwood’s very own Premium Beef program, featuring ultra-high-end Akaushi bloodline cattle, ensures that each steak is a masterpiece. I savored a perfectly cooked filet, complemented by an extraordinary wine list including rare finds such as a 1900 vintage. For wine enthusiasts, it’s a dream come true. Cheers to the old souls and the young at heart!
-Melissa
As we explore balance in life, we’ve already discussed the importance of balancing the Mind, Body, and Spirit. Now, let’s address the final pillar: Community.
I recently spoke with two young women in their 20s who shared their feelings of awkwardness when meeting new people. One said she would like to improve her communication skills when meeting new people. They had grown up in a world influenced by cell phones and social media, and COVID-19 had magnified their sense of disconnection. Despite being digitally connected, we’ve become more and more disconnected from face-to-face interactions.
In today’s world, technology makes communication easier, but we so often overlook the importance of in-person connections. Humans were designed to be part of a community. This is evident in the Bible when it says, “It is not good for man to be alone…”
Your People
Spending time with others offers more than just company—it provides support during tough times and celebrates the good times with you. “Your people” are those who understand you and stand by you, especially when life gets challenging. I know who my people are...do you know yours?
Different Kinds of Communities
Communities come in many forms. There are geographic, interest-based, professional, and many other communities. I have many hobbies and love people, so I’m part of many communities—from
THE FINAL PILLAR:Community Core Women!

workout groups to Bible study—and they all add value to my life.
Volunteering Together
Volunteering promotes connection and fulfillment, broadening your perspective by interacting with people from different walks of life. It doesn’t just help others; it helps you grow as well. Volunteering can be fun when done with friends, old or new, and offers opportunities for learning and growth. Even yard work and trash pick up is fun when you do it with others!
Promoting Selflessness
Being part of a community encourages selflessness. When we engage with others, we shift our focus from our own concerns to the needs of others. Helping others brings joy and teaches us that the act of giving is more fulfilling than personal gain.
The Importance of Community
Whether you’re 20 or 90, finding your people and avoiding isolation is essential. The four pillars— Mind, Body, Spirit, and Community—are necessary for balance. By being intentional and giving each of these areas our time, we can work toward a wellrounded, fulfilling life.
THIS IS THE GOAL WE STRIVE FOR AS

From Marfa to Montana, Garnett’s rural retreats seamlessly blend design-driven sophistication with rugged terrain and wide-open western views
In the few short years since he left the easy familiarity of urban downtowns and established his award-winning studio in rural Glen Rose, TX, Jeff Garnett has emerged as the architectof-choice for design-driven ranch retreats for a select clientele throughout Texas and beyond. Garnett understands what his clients are looking for. It’s what he was looking for when he established that studio in Glen Rose. It’s what we’re all looking for when we head out of the cities to find places where we can breathe, where our eyes can rest on natural beauty and our minds can focus.
Jeff Garnett's Background
Garnett's architectural journey is deeply rooted in the Texas landscape. It began as a childhood fascination with the old barns and stone ruins glimpsed through the rear window during family road trips. That fascination evolved into a practice that includes urban properties and public installations — but finds its greatest scope in the wild places where those barns and ruins once stood. “I've always wanted to be an architect since I was a little kid. I would spend hours staring out the window, looking at the landscape. I love old barns, the utilitarian roadside structures you see, and the old ruins, which have sadly almost disappeared now. I’ve always been drawn to the modern aesthetic, but I never let go of the Texas side of things and the natural materials. Seeing an old stone barn structure in the middle of a field is still such an inspiration for me.” Prior to forming his own studio in 2016, Garnett worked on a wide range of residential and commercial projects with leading architecture firms in Austin, Texas. Since 2016, Garnett has served as the resident architect for the high-profile Residences at Rough Creek Lodge development, while also coordinating and designing the adjacent Rough Creek Ranch Estates and Ranchette communities nearby.
Design Philosophy
Though Garnett resists putting a label on his design philosophy, we're calling it “Texas Modern” or “Modern Ranch.” It's a style that embraces a minimalist ethos, while prioritizing the integration of the surrounding landscape into the work and emphasizing the importance of retreat and serenity. Garnett’s style is modern, but it’s never slick. His ranch homes are rustic, but they are never countrified. Rather, they are the perfect fit for the raw and sometimes austere natural beauty of the landscape that surrounds them.
For each new design, Garnett draws inspiration from the specific site and region, immersing himself in the landscape and the natural world before sketching any designs on paper. “Experiencing the breeze, the sunset, the surrounding wildlife — all these things must be taken into account to properly integrate a home into its site. Each new build is ultimately a disruption to the natural environment, so the stakes are high. My designs are modern, but I almost always use local materials: stone, wood, and glass. I'm trying to create timeless architecture that seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with the natural elements of the ranch landscape.” With native wood and stone, glass, leather, steel and concrete, Jeff Garnett speaks the language of the wide-open spaces of the west. For those lucky to find a place in the handful of projects he takes on every year, Garnett designs ranch homes and rural compounds that perfectly match those spaces.

Ranch Living
The modern ranch lifestyle has never been more popular, as it combines aspirational values of sustainability, technical innovation, and luxury with age-old values of family connection, land stewardship, and conservation. Modern ranch home-ownership offers more than just unlimited outdoor activities — though the activities are amazing. It offers a sense of continuity and belonging for families seeking to establish roots deep in the land itself. In a Jeff Garnett designed ranch home, suffused with natural light, with inspired material choices blurring the line between indoors and outdoors and framing vistas of the world beyond, it also provides sanctuary and retreat from our increasingly stressful lives. “I design places for people and strive to make each place a haven from the demands of today’s society; a sacred place for clients to call home with a strong connection to the natural environment. Whether it's a full-time ranch or a vacation home, I want to create a place where you can set the briefcase down and just be — in that moment, in that space.”

A CONVERSATION WITH JAY & AMBER D e SIMONE
Q: How Did 840 Farm Come About?
A: We didn't initially set out to create a farm. Jay, a Chicago suburbanite, and Amber, a native Texan with 4-H roots, met in Dallas while pursuing corporate careers. After starting a family, we wanted to give our boys a childhood with outdoor adventures, and purchased 13 acres in Waxahachie in the fall of 2019. During the pandemic, we felt immensely grateful to God for our move and felt inspired to homestead. We initially started with chickens quickly a new coop was built thus starting 840 Farm.
Q: What does 840 Farm Specialize In?
A: Today, 840 Farm specializes in pasture-raised Mangalitsa pork, a rare heritage breed from Hungary often called the "Kobe beef of pork”. However, we also produce poultry and lamb. We believe that allowing the animals to roam freely in the sun produces superior products. We offer traditional pork, chicken, and lamb cuts, but our line of seven different salami flavors is particularly popular. One of our most sought-after products is the unique "coppa steak" a marbled cut near the pig shoulder that sells out quickly every time it's stocked. The Mangalitsa is incredibly unique and the coppa steak is the echelon of what this animal produces.
Q: What Makes 840 Farm Unique Compared to Other Farms?
A: It’s our dedication to the health and well-being of our animals and land. Any supplemental feed is a non-GMO, soy-free, and corn-free blend created with the help of an animal nutritionist and biologist. We’re among the largest and most soughtafter Mangalitsa producers in Texas. We give these animals the utmost care, which starts with healthy food, clean water, and pasture rotation. The pasture rotation and the variety of animals on our lands helps keep soils healthy and fertile. Regarding soil, Amber has been taking online schooling focusing on soil health without the use of synthetic additives because we believe healthy soils are the cornerstone to everything else we do.

Q: Who Works at 840 Farm?
A: Jay is a full-time farmer, while Amber balances her corporate career with the responsibilities of the farm. Our two boys help when they get home from school, and 840 Farm also provides experience to local high school students who are eager to earn some extra money.

Q: How Do You Connect With Your Customers?
A: We initially began selling at Saint Michael's Farmers Market in Dallas in 2021, where we quickly built a very loyal customer base. It truthfully feels amazing to hear things like “This is the best meat I’ve ever had!” It never gets old.
Q: Where Can Customers Find Your Products?
A: Currently, 840 Farm’s products can conveniently be purchased at our online store (840farm.com) for on-farm pickup or shipping. The Dove’s Nest also carries our salami, and next year all of our products will be available at our new venture, a butcher shop and gourmet market called "The Blind Pig" (theblindpigbutcher.com) located at 814 Water Street in Waxahachie.

Q: What Are Your Future Plans for 840 Farm?
A: Our vision extends beyond the farm. Through the restoration of the historic Catfish Plantation, we intend to further our passion for quality, clean food with new offerings, services, and community experiences. By partnering with local businesses and focusing on exceptional products, we want 840 Farm to be more than just a local farm. Our focus has really evolved to the enrichment of the Waxahachie community by being able to provide good, clean, healthy foods through the farm, and a place to enjoy them with friends and family at The Blind Pig.
KID ROCK'S rock N RODEOreimagined
The landmark, team-formatted rodeo featuring rock n’ roll icon Kid Rock LIVE in concert, will again launch the biggest weekend in Western sports, with the the 2025 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast – Championship taking over the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys on May 17-18, 2025.
“Last May we mashed up rodeo and rock and roll to celebrate cowboys and America in a party no one will ever forget,” said Kid Rock. “It’s time for year two, and we’ve got even bigger ideas to continue pushing rodeo into the entertainment mainstream. Nothing’s cooler than rodeo and rock-n-roll.”
“In 2024, the PBR alongside entertainment icon Kid Rock reimagined and changed rodeo forever,” said Sean Gleason, CEO and Commissioner of the PBR. “Kid Rock’s Rock N Rodeo delivered an exciting team-formatted all-star rodeo inside the NFL’s largest stadium, capped off with his unforgettable concert. We are making some exciting tweaks to this transformative concept and can’t wait to welcome even more fans to AT&T Stadium in 2025.”
During the music-infused event, six teams, each led by a legendary rodeo head coach, compete head-to-head in bracket-style competition across barrel racing, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, and breakaway roping. The all-star rodeo team competition and upbeat production is patterned after the successful formula PBR brought to bull riding through the Camping World Team Series launched in 2022. Five of the six teams will feature one returning member per discipline from the 2024 Kid Rock’s Rock N Rodeo. They will fill the second open position in each discipline via a draft. The sixth team will again be comprised of athletes who qualify through the WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance) Major held in tandem with Rodeo Corpus Christi in May 2025.
At the first-ever Kid Rock’s Rock N Rodeo last May, the WCRA team rode lights out, winning three gold medals in Round one before cementing their title as champions by winning four of the disciplines in the championship round.

Honoring the Western Industry
Before becoming a mom (something she thought she’d never do), Waxahachie children’s book author Kacy Burke worked in marketing for some of the biggest brands in the western industry: Professional Bull Riders, Rock & Roll Denim, and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, to name a few. “I grew up in a multi-generation rodeo family and always wanted to contribute to the industry the best way I could, though I hadn’t really competed since high school. My career in marketing the western sports lifestyle really became so important to me. I loved coming up with creative products and experiences and crafting messaging and content that would excite the end user. I definitely was not prepared for the curveball life was about to throw at me.”
Enter Covid and Motherhood
“In spring of 2020 I was laid off from my sports marketing job the same week I found out I was pregnant with my son, Beau. I had just turned 35 and thought, ‘Oh my gosh. What am I going to do?!’” What she didn’t realize at the time was these two major life changes would lead to a complete career change and the biggest professional accomplishment she could hope for - writing and self-publishing a bestselling children’s picture book series, starting with book #1 in October of 2021, Buckaroo Beau Lives on a Ranch. “I had always wanted to write for a living, but truly didn’t have the patience and discipline to sit down and write a novel. When Beau was born he did not sleep well at all. I started making up these little rhymes to sing him to sleep. One early morning after finally laying Beau down around 3 a.m. I thought, ‘Maybe I could make this a children’s book,’ and I just sat down and wrote it all out.”
It took a ton of research, networking, getting feedback, collaborating with the perfect children's book illustrator, Mel Schroeder, and making mistake after mistake, but after a few months she was ready to hit “publish” on Amazon.
Buckaroo Beau and His Many Adventures
Fast forward three years and Burke has four bestselling children’s books and a fifth on the way:
Buckaroo Beau Lives on a Ranch
Vera Vaquera Gets a New Horse
Buckaroo Beau Goes to the Rodeo
Cowgirl Callie’s Breakaway Dreams
Buckaroo Beau Loses his Hat (Fall, 2025)
The books are ideal for ages 4-7 and aim to authentically represent ranching and rodeo lifestyle with simple, rhyming stories that keep kids engaged, teach characterbuilding lessons like responsibility and perseverance, and help children learn to love reading.
Kacy Burke Embraces Waxahachie as Home
Kacy makes a full-time living as a children’s book author and coach right from her home office in Waxahachie. You can find her books on her site at BuckarooBeau. com, on Amazon, or in many western lifestyle retail stores.
Don't miss an adventure with Buckaroo Beau and his friends!

The Back Forty
Giddy Up!
Want to have a dinner party with a western flair? You are not alone! The ranch motif is sweeping the nation through apparel, home furnishings and entertaining. What I love about this trend is how casual, warm and welcoming it makes everyone feel. Keep things informal but well thought out. No fancy china or silver necessary. As an embroiderer, I really enjoy making personalized, embroidered dinner and cocktail napkins. I have even taken a family’s initials and turned them into a branding iron logo on the linens.
Gather ‘Round the Watering Hole
Set up a casual self-serve cocktail bar with a variety of whimsical, monogrammed cocktail napkins where guests can help themselves to whiskey, wine or a refreshing ranch water.
Not my First Rodeo
Having guests over is not the time to try new recipes. Stick with your tried-and-true favorites that are a household staple and simple to prepare. Keep the menu high on comfort and low on fussy. Think bbq, burgers, rootin’ tootin’ baked beans and campfire corn on the cob.
Change things up a bit for the dessert. Huddle around the outdoor fire pit in the backyard for a simple plate of s’mores, or a comforting piece of pie and ice cream, or pass a plate of cowboy cookies.
Ride Into the Sunset
At the end of the evening, send guests home with a little something yummy. It’s a fun and unexpected send-off. I love a bag of homemade caramel corn or delicious buckeyes tucked into a natural craft box with raffia ribbon. They’ll be enjoyed at a later time as friends reflect on the fun they had at your hoedown!
A Little Bit About Me...
I'm Jen Kennedy (aka The Preppy Pagoda) and I started embroidering during Covid as a way to stay busy. I embroider all types of items and themes. I acquired a taste for "Texas and all things cowboy" by having two kids who went to SMU and still live in Texas. My New Year's Resolution for 2024 was to "keep evolving"...which meant learning new things and taking a few risks. We took a leap, bought some land that was an old horse ranch in Nebraska, and decided to build a house and barn! We want to be able to unplug a little, but still be close to town. This project has been full of fun decisions and selections. Many purchases were made in Round Top, Texas and it should be completed in 2025. We are documenting our journey if you are thinking of taking a leap and building your dream!

HOW TO HACHIE: What the Cowboys Do

I’ve been told that a cowboy would ride all day to spend 1 night in Waxahachie, Texas because it was the go-to place for a good time!
Even though cowboys aren’t riding their horses to downtown, flash forward 125 years, it is still the heart of the city and center of activity with traces of cowboy history around every corner.
1. Farmers and ranchers would gather around the courthouse square to buy and sell goods, but the real focal point of the transaction was the Ellis County Courthouse. Built in 1895 and standing nine stories tall, it is one of the 100 most photographed structures in Texas.
2. We’ve upgraded the shopping experience from the 1800s to include 50+ boutiques, antiques, specialty shops, galleries and more. Giddy up for a shopping rodeo!
3. Cowboys won’t have to search hard for a good watering hole because Waxahachie is an official “Brew City, Texas” destination, and downtown Waxahachie has plenty to choose from with the College Street Pub, Railport Brewing Company, Southern Roots Brewing Company, Big Al’s Down the Hatch, Cork House Winery and Texas Art & Pour. There’s also 25 other restaurants to choose from offering all of your favorites – Mexican, American, Italian, desserts and everything in between.

5. Thanks to our friends at the Texas Motorplex, we still drive cattle thru downtown once a year during the “Stampede of Speed Cattle Drive” when we welcome the Fort Worth Herd to kick-off the biggest racing event in the country – NHRA Texas Fall Nationals Stampede of Speed. This is a 10-day event beginning Friday, October 3rd with the Stars of Texas Festival on October 3-5 and will conclude with the 40th annual NHRA Texas Fall Nationals, October 8-12th. A full week of activities will highlight the economic benefit of motorsports in Texas as well as provide a wide variety of entertainment options for sports fans from across the state and around the country.
6. If you’ve spent a lifetime “Looking for Love” like most urban cowboys, we have examples of love throughout the city with 21 painted hearts for you to snap a selfie with AND a love lock fence where you can hang your locket. For a map of the hearts, visit hachieheartstrail.com.
7. For more cowboy fun, the annual Ellis County
Livestock Show & Rodeo is a fundraiser with a mission of encouraging and equipping the youth of Ellis County today to create the leader of tomorrow. The rodeo portion is March 27-29, 2025 offering a PRCA ProRodeo sanctioned event with bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping and more. The ag mechanics, creative arts and youth livestock shows will begin March 23-April 5th where it all culminates with the “Sale of Champions.”
8. Last but not least, local resident and cowboy poet David Smith is real expert on the history of the cowboy in Ellis County. Catch him in action along with his cowboy poet and music friends from around the country at the annual Waxahachie Cowboy Gathering scheduled for April 5 at the Ellis County Woman’s Building.

STORY & PHOTOS PROVIDED BY KATHY SIMS
Reasonable or Radical?
When you bury a husband, you don’t expect to lose your entire world, too. What’s a girl to do with all that pain? Be reasonable or get radical? This girl chose radical! The only way to heal the pain was to go through it, in an RV, traveling the east coast, surrounded by Jesus. That was the choice I made--and friends...let me tell you..in that year on the road I did things I had never dreamed I could do. I pushed myself beyond exhaustion. I prayed. I cried. I held fabulous pity parties! I got lost in God’s word and music. Slowly my heart healed. While a door had been slammed firmly shut, a new one was opening if I dared to go through. My name is Kathy Sims--and this is all part of my journey leading to ownership of Vintage Market Days™ of South Central Texas.
Mad Dash Mixes
I became a road warrior for Mad Dash Mixes, promoting their products at Vintage Market Days™ events. The weeks took on a routine: travel to the event, set up the camper, cook up soups for sampling, set up the booth, then feed the masses! After 3 days, pack it up and move on to the next location and start the process all over again. Soon I discovered an entire underworld of beautiful Christian people who live the gypsy life. It felt free and it’s liberating-and it's hard work! As a single female traveling the roads of the east coast, you quickly learn you can’t survive without the kindness of strangers. Fellow vendors and random strangers come to your rescue at precisely the right moment as if God himself has sent you an angel.
Stories from the Road
One of my favorite memories happened in North Carolina when my Mom was with me for a spell. She is a wonderful brave, resilient woman who can be a bit vain at times. We had just wrapped up an event and were heading to our next destination when she said “Hey Kathy I think this guy is flirting with me”. "Hmmm," I replied. “What exactly do you mean, Mom?” She says, “This guy in the truck beside us keeps waving at me. Oh my God, he’s flirting with me! Doesn’t he know how old I am?” I am curious, but not concerned and explain it could be something else. "Just roll down your window and ask." She works up her courage, rolls down the window, and the nice young man says “Ma’am, your tire is on fire.” Yep...fun times! He saved us. Who knows how long that would have burned before we realized we had a problem. Friends...the stories I could share!
God's Doors
Remember God’s doors? Turns out my year on the road was only a transition period. A time of learning, growing, and healing. I think God holds your hand through these times and when you are ready, a new door presents itself. When my first grandchild was born, I knew it was time to come back to Texas and start rebuilding my life. It was at this perfect moment that the Vintage Market Days™ San Antonio territory became available, and I moved up from vendor to owner/promoter. I spent another year in that RV. Learning the business, keeping my grandbaby, and hosting events. Life was simple, challenging, and oh so rewarding!
Home at Last
Fast forward a few years and my life has continued to evolve. God brought a beautiful man into my life. I was blessed with another Vintage Market Days™ territory, South Central Texas (commonly known as Waxahachie), and now this year has brought the best blessing of all in teaming up with my daughter, Shauna. We have officially formed a partnership that will allow us to work all of our events together...meaning San Antonio, South Central Texas, and South Houston! I hope that you will take this ride with Shauna and I as we put our hearts into bringing the best to all those kindred spirits who love a unique shopping experience designed around vintage. Jerry Jones once said the greatest achievement of his life was building a business where he and his children all worked together. I believe the man knows what he is talking about!
2025 Spring Show Vintage Market Days™ in Alvarado
We love bringing our events to the Waxahachie area, and are always looking for new venues that meet the needs of our vendor and our customers. For our Spring Market, we will be back at the Shepherd’s Valley Cowboy Church and Arena Complex from February 28th through March 2nd. I know it’s a little bit of a drive to Alvarado, but hopefully supporting the youth in our area as you shop will make the extra time in the car worth it.
We hope you will join us!
Kathy

New imaging system provides more accurate screening and more comfortable experience with low-dose radiation exposure
Ennis Regional Medical Center now offers 3D mammography, the best technology for early detection of breast cancer, which is critical to more effective treatment. The hospital’s new GE Senographe Pristina™ system provides more accurate detection and a more comfortable experience.
“With breast cancer, we know that early detection saves lives, and the best technology for early detection is 3D mammography,” said Doug Holzbog, Market CEO for Ennis Regional Medical Center. “We are thrilled to add this tool to our digital imaging capabilities and believe this upgrade in technology will best serve the Ennis area and the patients that come to us for these essential screenings.”
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, heightening the importance of mammograms and early detection. But as essential as mammograms are, they are not always a pleasant experience. Ennis Regional’s advanced 3D mammography system aims to make screenings more comfortable with simplified positioning, better compression, and most importantly, better detection.
The Senographe Pristina™ reduces pain and anxiety during the exam with features like rounded corners, a thinner image detector, and comfortable armrests. The 3D exam captures multiple low-dose images at different angles, creating a detailed picture of the breast. Using a low-dose x-ray sweep (the lowest of any 3D mammography technology), the system captures clear, sharp images with minimal motion blur. This allows radiologists to examine breast tissue layer by layer, improving detection accuracy.
“With a more comfortable experience, women are more likely to keep up with their scheduled screenings,” said Jaime Choate, Director of Imaging at Ennis Regional. “And that’s important, because a 3D mammogram can detect tiny, earlystage cancers, and early detection means earlier, more effective treatment. The higher accuracy of 3D mammograms also leads to fewer false positives and fewer return visits to the doctor.”
Ennis Regional provides comprehensive breast care, including 3D mammography, breast ultrasounds, and image-guided biopsies.
Mammograms are recommended every two years for women at average risk for breast cancer and age 40 to 74. To make an appointment today, speak with your primary care provider or call Ennis Regional Medical Center at 469.256.2410.

STORY BY CINDY BURCH
Although Fredericksburg is one of the most popular road trip destinations in the Lone Star state, it has been several years since my husband and I took a long weekend to soak in some Hill Country charm. Last month, we headed off with friends to check out some of the new wineries and restaurants we heard were popping up in Fredericksburg as fast as Texas wildflowers in the Spring. The scenic backroads drive was still the same through Hico, Hamilton and Evant on Highway 281, but as we got closer near Fredericksburg, the familiar landscape began to change. In the heart of the idyllic hill country setting where we used to see just pecan groves and cattle ranches, there now stand huge modern wineries, tasting rooms and microbreweries.
Five miles north of town we pulled into the site of our rented historic log cabin called Dogtrot at Triple Creek. Built in the 1800's on Tennessee’s Cumberland River, the home was used as a makeshift hospital during the Civil War. It was disassembled and rebuilt on a Fredericksburg farm in 1997. We loved our stay as each side of the log home has separate living quarters with stone fireplaces and kitchenettes. It is a beautiful and perfect getaway for two couples. The large porch and breezeway made the perfect setting for drinking our morning coffee and sipping wine in the afternoon while watching white-tailed deer wander through the property daily. If you opt for more modern accommodations, I suggest The Trueheart Hotel, where breakfast baskets filled with hot buttermilk biscuits are delivered to guests in each of the property’s 13 cottages outfitted with Pierre Frey fabrics and locally sourced antiques.
As we set out each day for wine tastings, it was amazing to see the growth from our last trip when Becker Vinyards was about the only winery to visit. There are now over 60 tasting rooms in the area. One of our favorites was Alexander Vineyards, with live music and delicious gourmet bites paired with great European wines. We also enjoyed the tasting room of Ferris and Fletch, a family-owned winery located on Main Street where owner and winemaker, Rarig Ross, is primarily using California grapes to make his impressive wines. Safari Winery, Grape Creek Vineyards and Halter Ranch are other popular options to visit as well. Most wineries require a reservation and will cost about $30 per person for 5 tastings.
Main Street in Fredericksburg used to be a place to spend an afternoon poking around the antique shops and cute gift stores before picking up a flat of sweet Hill Country peaches from a fruit stand and driving home. Now the rows of storefronts in the historic limestone buildings are filled with more stylish shops, art galleries, restaurants and bars. There is still a small-town charm to the place, but hipper. The fast-growing wine scene has ushered a broader entrepreneurial energy into Fredericksburg as well as an influx of adventurous transplants. Chef Jordan Muraglia and artist Richard Boprae were some of the first to take Main Street up a notch when they turned a three-story landmark building into an art gallery and upscale restaurant called Vaudeville. I especially enjoyed browsing a home décor shop called Blackchalk Home & Laundry and their neighbor Carol Hicks Bolton Antiquites, a huge warehouse full of wonderful old European finds. In an ornate gingerbread-style home just off the main square, you will find San Saba Alchemic, a luxe fragrance and soap line made with cold-pressed oil from Texas pecans.
Another couple on the restaurant scene is John and Evelyn Washburn, whose Otto's German Bistro serves upscale dishes that tap into the town's German history. They also own several other Fredericksburg restaurants, including the popular farmto-table Alla Campagna. In addition, award-winning chefs Amy and Hunter Huffman have recently opened Mesquite in the Warehouse, a modern concept that features slow-smoked meats, fresh salads and gourmet sandwiches in the old Woerner Warehouse Feed Store. Hill & Vine is another not-to-miss restaurant and a great Sunday brunch option.
We finished our last day with a drive out to the famous Enchanted Rock, a sacred (holy) place for the Native Americans who lived there long ago. The enormous pink granite dome has 11 miles of hiking trails, and it's one of the most visited in our Texas state parks. The German immigrants who settled in the area in 1846 would be amazed to find how Fredericksburg’s food, wine and culture have diversified into such a sophisticated destination and how it seems like everyone is heading for the hills these days.
