Summer Dreams...

Long summer days and leisure vacations allow us to finally slow down and take the time to reflect and stir up dreams! On the surface, they could be about remodeling, landscaping, or adding a beautiful backyard pool, but what lies even deeper within us? In this issue, the inspiring stories about local businesses, interesting hobbies and talents, and challenges overcome by faith and perseverance, encourage me to keep the dreams alive that I feel God has put in my heart. Some are deep-rooted from childhood. Others are newer and fresh. I try to continually tap into them while praying for His plan and purpose in my life. I truly believe that we all have a dream inside of us...no matter the size. There is power in your dreams! God may be waiting on you to be the solution to a need or a problem, help heal someone’s pain, or to provide hope. Do you have a dream or an unfinished task in your heart? An idea that you may have abandoned? Be still...wait...listen...and invite your childhood dreams to come out and play! We have dreams within dreams! Some seem too complicated, layered and even downright scary. Remember that God did not give us a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7). With around 8 billion people on the planet and no two of us alike, 1 Peter 4:10 reminds us that each one of us has been given gifts to use. Go for it! We need Dreamers and Doers! We also need Dream Encouragers to fuel others.

Keep that childlike wonder! Enjoy being the best version of yourself and all that you were created to be. Say “YES!” Walk (or run!) with intention towards the goal. It’s never too late. Leave room for a miracle. Seek His will (Proverbs 16:3) and chase your biggest, scariest, and grandest dreams!

Peace and blessings,

-Melissa

ABOUT THE IT AIN’T ALWAYS SmokeShow

STORY, PHOTOS & RECIPE BY JASON WILSON, MEAT THERAPY
12 LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // JUNE/JULY 2023

you can smoke anything if you’re brave enough, BUT I must admit that I enjoy all facets of outdoor cooking. Lately, with summer right around the corner, I have really been leaning into my griddles. Whether you have one of the new Traeger Flatrocks, a Blackstone, or a cast iron griddle atop a grill grate, griddling is a game changer when it comes to quick, easy outdoor meals. Griddles have a large, flat surface that is placed over a heat source versus grilling or smoking which uses direct or indirect heat.

Over the last couple of years, griddling has grown in popularity. Despite its deep history (think pre-oven days), some may say griddling is “having a moment.” With its simple set-up, ability to cook mass quantities, and easy clean-up, what’s not to love?

Some of our favorite recipes include classics like fajitas, burgers, and chicken-fried rice, but nothing beats breakfast on the griddle. Recommended by our friends at Meat Church via True North Café, we recently tried our own spin of the Crispy Hashbrown Omelet recipe, and it was love at first bite. Give this a try and tell me this doesn’t become a weekend breakfast staple!

CRISPY HASHBROWN Omelet

Drop down butter and shredded potatoes on your griddle of choice at medium heat. Season the taters with Meat Church Holy Gospel.

Sauté red, yellow, and green bell peppers with onion and jalapeño. Drop in some ham chunks to re-warm and get a little crisp bite to it!

Beat up five eggs and pour across the middle of the hashbrowns and spread evenly. Add in your favorite shredded cheese blend.

Toss on everything else, cut in half, fold over, and ENJOY!

Looking for a great gift for that special grill chef in your life? Check out our friend Josh Hunt’s new book, Blackstone Griddling: The Ultimate Guide to Show-Stopping Recipes on Your Outdoor Gas Griddle. It is your one-stop guide to all things griddling including searing, sautéing, and cleaning your griddle. summer skin...

An Interview with Eve + Eden

Eve + Eden is a beauty and wellness brand that prioritizes quality biologically appropriate ingredients. We are a husband and wife team that got fed up with big companies selling personal care products that cause more harm to the body than good. We’re simplifying our routines and going back to our roots. After battling years of cystic acne, infertility, and chronic illness, we desired to take our lives back.

Q: What are some core values for Eve + Eden?

A:We strive to create products that honor our biological makeup, the environment, and the Creator. We really desire to educate our customers and empower them to advocate for themselves. Table Talk is a piece of how we’re pulling our community together to learn how to make the best choices for ourselves and those we love. We are also stewarding a fundraising campaign called “Be the Village” to support families in our community.

Q: What products have been released and where can we find them?

A:

We currently have our versatile “Eve” tallow whip and our newest addition, “Adam”. Eve is great for everyone, but especially for those with rosacea, eczema, diaper rash, etc. Adam doubles as beard balm, and smells like a Cinnabon™! We also have a best-selling candle, Jubilee, which is a collaboration with Camilla Bee Candle Co. The following local businesses currently stock our products: Vita Coffee House, Wild Grace inside The Doves Nest, With Willing Hands Antiques, Paper Leaves, and Wild Thyme Herb Shop. We also have a website (eveandedentx.com), and we offer local meet up opportunities through our Instagram!

Q: What is tallow and why is it good for skin? A:

Tallow is rendered and purified fat from an animal. Our tallow is rendered from organic grass fed and finished beef suet from a regenerative farm in Texas. Suet is fat that surrounds the kidneys and other vital organs on the cow. This specific type of fat is rich in fat-soluble vitamin A, D, E, and K as well as essential minerals. Tallow has a very similar amino acid makeup to our own skin’s oil (sebum), which makes it easy for our bodies to utilize. Everyone can benefit from these products because it nourishes the skin — on a biological level!

Q: What is Table Talk?

A: Table Talk is pretty simple! The local community gathers together around a metaphorical table to talk, connect, and learn. We highlight trusted local wellness practitioners who teach us about their area of expertise. Vita Coffee House hosted the first one, and it was a huge success. Camilla Bee Candle Co. hosted a non-toxic perfume making class & we learned more about female anatomy from Dr. Logan Spaeck (a local holistic PT and pelvic floor therapist). Sierra Byers, co-owner of Eve + Eden, will be teaching the next Table Talk this summer. Follow us on social media for tickets and dates!

ARTFULLY CURATED in the Dallas Arts District

18 LIVING-MAGAZINE.COM // JUNE/JULY 2023
STORY & PHOTOS BY MELISSA MCBRIDE

THE DALLAS ARTS DISTRICTis a playground for lovers of all things creative! It is the largest contiguous urban arts district in the country. This mecca of creativity in downtown Dallas spans approximately 118 imaginative acres. You’ll find a wonderful flip book style visitor’s guide on their website (dallasartsdistrict. org) for museums, the performing arts, commerce, worship, dining, and all types of events. The Dallas Museum of Modern Art, The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Winspear Opera House, The Dallas Theater Center, Nasher Sculpture Center, The Crow Museum of Asian Art, Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and Klyde Warren Park are just a handful of places to enjoy. The best place to stay (or live!) while you play? Looming elegantly while beautifully reflecting the Dallas sky, you’ll see HALL Art Residences (a blend of art and living) and my getaway destination, HALL Arts Hotel, right beside it. Located in the heart of the district...there is only one problem...the hotel in itself is so artfully curated, you won’t want to leave it! You’ll have to push yourself to get out and explore!

HALL ARTS HOTEL is the first hotel in the Dallas Arts District. The property was developed by Craig and Kathryn Hall, the visionaries and co-proprietors of California’s award-winning HALL Wines (hallwines.com) and founders of Dallas-based real estate firm HALL Group. Designed by HKS Architects with interiors by Bentel & Bentel. HALL Arts Hotel has a show-stopping contemporary art collection, art-filled spaces, and high-tech accommodations with thoughtful touches. Masterful architecture with expressive art...a design dream!

THE VIBE AllThatisPossibleisReal(alternating to “All That is Real is Possible”), Alicia Eggert’s red neon installation, seems to be an optimistic mission statement for this thoroughly modern, exquisite, and immersive artistic experience. Upon arrival in the lobby, the floating movements of Lava Thomas’ tambourine installation are mesmerizing. Just when you are taking in one installation, another one flirts with you and you find yourself visually intrigued and mentally dancing between all the exhibits. Unparalleled hospitality! Truly some of the most professional, knowledgeable, elegant, kind, and impeccably dressed staff...impressive! Note all the details--jeweled or logo lapel pins, pocket scarves, and all wearing exquisite suiting. Unmistakable Dr. Delphinium floral touches are everywhere. Enjoy wine tastings in the lobby or a refreshing glass of infused water artfully layered with fruits. You will love the vibe! An evident pursuit of excellence in visuals, comfort, flavors, staff and leadership. As an artist...I’m so drawn to the energy!

THE ART TOUR

You will receive a printed guide upon arrival, but if you get a chance, arrange to have an entertaining and informed curated experience.View the collection of 25 incredible pieces of art, lighting, and installations with the Chief Concierge. In addition, there are many more pieces of art and photographs throughout the property along with the outdoor Texas Sculpture Walk.

POSH PICNIC + PICTURESQUE PARK

The romantic in me absolutely loved this! Their luxury car service with the most dapper of drivers will deliver you to Klyde Warren Park complete with a blanket and a perfectly packed picnic basket! Enjoy a chilled bottle of HALL Sauvignon Blanc, a charcuterie mix of the freshest fruits, nuts, olives and an assortment of meats and cheeses amidst all the sights and sounds of the park!

THE ACCOMMODATIONS

Plush...pristine...PERFECTION! I can’t say enough wonderful things about this property. The luxe accommodations are ultra modern and high-tech, and the cleanliness exceeds all expectations! There are 183 gorgeous rooms (the “wow” views of the Dallas Arts District and downtown!), 19 themed suites (that bathtub!!), and the 5 meeting and event spaces will inspire a reason to meet, mingle, or celebrate!

WAVES & WORKOUT

The gorgeous rooftop terrace has a salt water pool, gardens, a bar, a gathering area, and breathtaking skyline views. What a fun place to relax! An expansive state-of-the-art 24 hour fitness center is available to the hotel guests and residents. (hallartsresidences.com)

ELLIE’S

Affectionately named after Craig Hall’s artistic, innovative, and independent mother, this is now one of my new favorite Dallas dining experiences. Ellie loved entertaining family and friends with beautiful food in artful surroundings. At this gem of a restaurant, lounge, and terrace...the food, wine, and craft cocktail presentations are as pretty as the art pieces. I love the simple sentiment of Cerith Wyn Evan’s neon phrase Just Play Me Two Bars of Stardust that seems to float on the wall across from the centerpiece of the room...an elegant Steinway grand piano. Dining is magical under the spectacular Asteroidslighting installation. Kristin Baker’s expansive landscape painting, Spangled Rampart, visually transports you from coast to coast with bold, rich colors. Peek through the wine display to find a second mirrored tambourine installation by Lava Thomas. The intricate mosaic wall in the covered terrace provides a sparkling backdrop for outdoor dining. Management is personable and friendly and the professional staff at Ellie’s makes it a fun experience! Jazz Brunch is every Sunday from 11am-2pm. Watch for fun events (elliesdallas.com) like Wine Down Wednesday, Watercolor & Wine, Meet the Makers, and Yappy Hour (yes...dog friendly and treats!) Something that really captured my artistic attention...the check is delivered in an art journal along with an Ellie’s signature pen. Get inspired! Blank pages beckon for your quips, comments, poetry...or a sketch!

ADDITIONAL OFFERS & PACKAGES

Peruse the packages and specials! They offer a Texas and Oklahoma resident discount (hallartshotel.com) and more! HALL Arts Hotel is managed by Aimbridge Hospitality, and is part of the esteemed Curio Collection by Hilton, which provides guests with benefits under the Hilton Honors program. Even if you aren’t able to stay yet...you will love to wine and dine at Ellie’s!

Different something

The Ellis County Courthouse and all of its charm has always been a part of my world. Owning a retail store was a dream. The constant stream of people and friendly hellos in Downtown Waxahachie are now a pleasant addition to this chapter in my life...the chapter I dreamt about for years and worked hard to reach. The unfolding of ThatGibson has been breathtaking to me! Naming the business was the easy part! My parents had always owned businesses and would incorporate Gibson, our last name. Continuing the legacy, I am now “That Gibson” gal with a vision to bring something different to Ellis County! The recognizable lower case initials and all that the store stands for have been warmly embraced by locals and beyond. Finding the business direction and focus has taken years. When this all started, I would come home after teaching full time to then go to work on my online shop.

Exciting news!

After the past year’s grand success, I recently expanded by adding an edgy pop up inside Lucky’s Barber Shop in Midlothian where you’ll find an exciting mix of our merch.

In 2017, ThatGibson.com offered too many items that were not selling and I kept thinking, “what in the holy goodness am I doing?” I needed a new focus and a new branding direction! I researched so many interesting products and shopped for merchandise constantly. I started to find fellow small business owners that made unique items that really supported the fact that my business was going to offer quality goods...fun with a flair...uncommon and sometimes quirky for my customers. My first Waxahachie store front was located in a 1200 square foot, cement-floored industrial building. This crazy move was brought to life (on Black Friday during COVID in 2020 no less!) by friends and family that poured love into that empty space. I could then support Texas moms, small businesses, local entrepreneurs, and artists under that roof. However, my heart kept calling me to the bustling Downtown Square.

Since 2022, ThatGibson has offered unique style and a view of the majestic courthouse through huge windows at 104 N. College Street (in the historic Rogers Hotel building) on the square in downtown Waxahachie, Texas. Since moving my retail store to this location, I literally smile every time the clock bells ring. People grab a bite to eat then walk in to see what’s new. Women love the trending fashion and accessories.

What’s next on the horizon for ThatGibson?

You never know...but I guarantee it will be “something different!”

Men are surprised by the selection of grooming products and exclusive men’s apparel. I tell the ladies I try my best to keep the guys looking and smelling good. We always have a plethora of tongue-in-cheek trucker caps and a large assortment of graphic tees.

Stay different @thatgibson

hey y’all!

I’m Brenna Nix, the owner of Cheyenne Ranch and this is my beautiful family – my husband, Cody, and our son, Cohen!

We have lived in the Waxahachie area all our lives and love our beautiful historic square. For Cheyenne Ranch to be part of it is truly a dream come true and we couldn’t be more honored to be here.

We have had a wonderful welcome from the local businesses and customers, and we often get the same sequence of questions - “Is there a Cheyenne ranch?” “Is your name Cheyenne?” “Are you from Cheyenne, Wyoming?” Well, I have yet to see Cheyenne, Wyoming, and one day, God willing, Cheyenne Ranch will be a place we call home.

Let me tell you our back story: In 2018, when Cody and I married, I was in the medical field working at Baylor. We had plans to start our family soon. Along came the news that a baby was on its way! While we always thought that we wanted to start with a boy, we quickly became very certain that this baby was going to be a little cowgirl, and we wanted to name her ‘Cheyenne Landry’. God does have a sense of humor. On gender reveal day, low and behold, IT’S A COWBOY!

Completely shocked, the visions of our family came flooding in. My husband is an outdoor enthusiast, a hunter, and could often be found bull riding at the Cowboy Church on Thursday nights or playing baseball. I grew up riding horses, competed in shows at the local barns and ranches around

the county, and rode in many parades here in Waxahachie. We envisioned raising our son in those same environments.

Fast forward baby arrives, maternity leave ends, and going back to work was going to be bittersweet. I knew that I wanted to have more time at home but not working wasn’t part of our plan. Cody and I sat down to figure out how to make this work while making ends meet. Ideas started flying.

I have always loved western fashion and finding unique pieces to create outfits that tell a story about who you are without ever having to say a word. Combining the cowboy way of life with a love for fashion, Cheyenne Ranch was born. It’s about a lifestyle. It represents so much, and we have our little guy to thank for it. He was the inspiration behind chasing this dream and we’ve never looked back.

So, as we begin our 4th year with Cheyenne Ranch in our new location, we are so proud to drive into Downtown Waxahachie and see our sign hanging right there in view of our beautiful courthouse! I know we have so many more milestones and memories to make.

See ya’ll next time!

WITH endless POSSIBILITIES

ransforming spaces and bringing my client’s dreams to life have always been my passion as an interior designer. For me, it’s not just about creating beautiful spaces; it’s about creating homes that truly reflect the people who inhabit them. A home should be a sanctuary, a place to unwind and rejuvenate after a long day, and a backdrop for life’s most significant moments. It should support your wellness, nurture your dreams and be a place that feels like your own personal oasis.

About a year ago, I had the pleasure of working on this home for a wonderful family that had recently moved from another state. The house they bought was beautiful but felt impersonal, void of character, and lacked the personality and warmth that truly represented who they were.

We transformed their kitchen, living room, dining room, primary bedroom, closet, entryway, and man cave. I carefully selected colors, furniture, and decor that held personal significance for this family and balanced comfort, style, and durability. As a result, their home now beautifully showcases their personalities and provides a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

In the end, interior design is about so much more than aesthetics. It is about crafting environments that support our dreams, celebrate our journeys, and inspire us to live our best lives. Let your home be the ultimate reflection of who you are—a haven where dreams come to life and where the important moments of your life unfold amidst a backdrop of serenity, beauty, and endless possibilities. One of my main inspirations is my desire to encourage my children. I want them to observe the life-changing impact of pursuing one’s dreams and the satisfaction of positively impacting others. Through designing beautiful spaces, I aim to instill in them the conviction that anything is achievable with dedication, perseverance, and imagination.

Pickleball

is growing in Ellis County

Pickleball is the latest sport taking the country by storm, and it’s found a new home in Ellis County. This surge in popularity is hardly a surprise given how accessible it is and being perfect for any age or skill level. Whatever your experience level with pickleball, you’ll want to know where to find the best pickleball courts in Ellis County.

Q: What is Pickleball? A:

Pickleball combines the best elements of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong to create something truly unique. Played on a badminton-sized court, the game uses a perforated plastic ball and paddles instead of rackets.

With the game’s relatively slow pace and gentle learning curve, anyone can learn how to play pickleball in a single session. The fact that it’s mostly played in doubles also contributes to its social nature. Given pickleball’s estimated 36.5 million players in the US, local facilities are popping up across Ellis County to keep up with the growing demand. Recently the Waxahachie City Council approved funding from the park dedication fees for the city’s first pickleball court project. There could possibly be a court by the end of summer!

Q: Where can I play Pickleball in Ellis County? A:

If you’re looking for pickleball courts in Ellis County, be sure to check out...

Rotary Park: As the largest community park in Ennis, this facility offers two outdoor concrete courts with permanent lines. The best part is it’s completely free to play, though players will need to bring their own nets.

Pickleball Paradise TX: This Midlothian club boasts four regulation size pickleball courts with permanent lines and nets. Introductory clinics (and much more) are offered and can be enjoyed by members and non- members. Paddles and balls may be rented or purchased. They have ashaded pavilion by the courts with an over-sized patio and new LED lights. Enjoy pickleball during the day or night!

stepping into my

D R E A M S

I still have the heart and enthusiasm of a child! I love life, I love to play... and I love dreams. As a young boy, I watched others having fun “being kids” as they would run, ride bicycles, skateboard, climb trees, water ski and snow ski. I wondered how fun that would be. I could only imagine and dream. You see, I was different from the other kids. I had crutches and metal braces on my legs. One day a kid pointed at me and said, “You can’t do what I can do. You are crippled.”

I went home and asked my mom, “What is crippled?” She explained that when I was about two and a half years old, our fireplace detached from the wall and fell upon my body. I had a lower spinal cord injury. She said that I was special and had to do things differently than other people. During that time of my life, I underwent a lot of surgeries at Scottish Rite Hospital. I eventually had my right leg amputated. Waking up from surgeries, I would always find my dad praying for me at the foot of my bed. I learned that a prayer was hope and faith in action. With that same faith, I learned to step towards my dreams in prayer to find that I would be able to do most of the things that others could do and have fun!

As time went on, I learned to do all things. One step at a time, I would try and then master. I learned to ride a skateboard, a zip sled on the water, a bicycle, then a motorcycle and; finally, I learned to water and snow ski. I am always a work in progress, but my faith has taught me to never give up, to push forward through the pain, and learn to do what had seemed impossible. I don’t know how to stop until my purpose is complete in hopes that others will keep their hope and faith alive. After enjoying a career in finance, I learned another skill and started a successful company called Stitches and Staples in 2010 with a primary focus on restaurant and commercial upholstery. We are blessed and busy. Dreams do come true!

In the process of learning how to reach my goals, I needed special equipment and the help of others to do so. I met Blaine Bridgford at a water skiing program in 1999. He had a lot of equipment, boats, and volunteers at Pecan Cove Lake in Waxahachie. Blaine, and his wife, Belynda, invested time and encouragement for physically challenged people like me to learn to water ski. I’ve been skiing with their team & MAWS (Metroplex Adaptive Water Sports) for about 25 years. Blaine’s hope is to find a good fit (an individual or an organization) to take on the opportunity and challenges of running the program with a similar passion to help others, Let’s find a way to continue providing these clinics for another 25 years! For myself...at almost 60...my dreams of youth are now my current life.

“WHEN YOU SEE ARTISTS OUT WITH THEIR EASELS & A GLEAM IN THEIR EYES...SAYHowdy &

LEARN THEIR STORIES!”

16th Annual Paint Historic Waxahachie Event

With the Texas springtime sun on their backs and and an easel full of supplies, talented participants in the 16th Annual Paint Historic Waxahachie Event covered the county with outdoor painting during April and May. This “Plein Air” (meaning outdoor and onsite) event is organized annually by the Ellis County Art Association, Inc. (ECAA). ECAA was born in 1958 in the living rooms of local oil painting enthusiasts. Today ECAA is a nonprofit corporation which serves nearly 100 members and operates the Art On The Square Gallery as a place to showcase their art year-round.

Experience the Captivating Charm of Local Plein Air Art!

Acrylic painters, oil painters, watercolorists and dry media artists look forward to this annual way to break out their easels and accept both the challenge and joy of the spring lit scenery here in our beautiful area. The only rule was that the artists didn’t use reference photos or take their work to a studio for completion. The art had to be original work done onsite and outdoors. It is both a contest and a blessing for these artists who rank from hobbyists to professionals. An independent judge was hired to judge the artwork submitted. Prizes for many different categories were awarded on the last day of the event, Friday, May 19th. The results of their efforts will be on display at the Art On The Square Gallery at 113 W, Franklin St. through the month of June.

The event was made possible by the strong support of ECAA’s community sponsors. This year there were 18 businesses plus the Waxahachie Convention And Visitors Bureau who sponsored this event for our community. Also, Historic Waxahachie, Inc.. sponsored a special award called “Saving Places” which was won by local professional artist, Steve Miller. For a list of our sponsors, and to learn more about the Ellis County Art Association, visit elliscountyart.net. Scroll through our list of art classes on the square this summer.

Next year, when you see artists out with their easels and a gleam in their eyes, say “Howdy!” and learn their stories. It is a wonderful way to document and celebrate our historic Waxahachie!

God Bless the Broken Road ...Farm!

Broken Road Farm started as the whimsical daydream of a young girl that recently came true! In 2020, my husband, Greg, and I seized an opportunity to fulfill our land ownership dreams and bought our very first farm in California. With absolutely no experience and very little research... we dove in!

God Bless the Broken Road was our wedding song. It explains the different paths and turns that life can throw at us, but we know that somehow through all those twists, we made it to each other. In naming our farm, our minds kept going back to the lyrics because we didn’t know exactly what we would offer yet, but we knew it would be a place of community, a place for friends to gather from all walks of life, and a place where broken roads are part of the journey. This farm would also need to be a place to be profitable enough to afford my animal habit!

Our farm actually grew quickly with the pandemic because outdoor activities were soon the only allowed activities. Animals also multiplied rather quickly and our human count was at two kids. I created a lot of different activities for the community. Through my relationships with makers, vendors and small businesses, we created a space where we could still operate and provide an amazing time for all. We offered workshops, holiday fun, special events, future farmers groups and more. With no small business plan, but a BIG calling, we made it happen! I now had validation that my ideas were good ones and I could offer whatever community gatherings I dreamt of! Farm life seemed to only be missing one thing...Texas!

My heart has always been in Texas! Fond memories of annual visits with my grandparents in this great state is what really solidified the type of life and environment I wanted our family to thrive in, and the community we longed to find. We wanted more joy and to live a more simple and fulfilled life. Two years later when all the needed pieces fit together beautifully, we made the move with 25 animals, our two kids and one on the way--but that’s a story for a different time.

Now that we are finally home in Ovilla, Texas, we are figuring out farm life with our three kids and want to invite y’all for the ride! Stop by and meet our latest baby, “Ellis”...a miniature HighPark bull calf. He is affectionately named after this amazing county and the friendships we are forming with the community! Take pics with our bulls and cows: Elvis, Reba, Dolly, Roseanne, Ethel, James Brown and Ralphie. We also have horses and ponies and donkeys...oh my! Sheep, goats, bunnies, chickens, dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs... and Creepy Clarice the CA transplant duck! Shop at our farm store, Gardenias and Grit, which is a collaboration of makers and local businesses.

Lots of fun plans ahead...

but for now enjoy the Broken Road Farm journey so far...which has led us straight to you!

RECENT ADVENTURES IN THE TREATMENT OF COMMON ORTHOPEDIC INJURIES...”

Platelet Rich Plasma: Innovative Therapy for Less Pain and Better Movement

If you’re familiar with the term platelet rich plasma (PRP), it’s likely because of its well-publicized cosmetic applications—from smoothing wrinkles to stimulating hair regrowth. Beyond beauty, though, PRP is increasingly being used for more structural applications in tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. Here’s how it works. PRP harnesses the body’s own healing properties to amplify the natural repair and growth factors to help effectively address some soft tissue injuries without surgery or medication injections that may offer only short-term relief. That’s one of the reason athletes from Peyton Manning to Tiger Woods have turned to the therapy, and why I often recommend it for many of my patients, especially those who live an active lifestyle.

HOW DOES PLATELET RICH

THERAPY WORK?

PRP is a highly personalized therapy that uses the patient’s own blood as the basis for healing. Blood is made up of many different types of cell materials. Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood that allows red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to circulate throughout the body through blood vessels to do their job. It also contains proteins called growth factors that your body uses to heal tissue.

For a treatment so advanced, creating and delivering PRP is actually fairly simple and is usually done in the doctor’s office:

1. The patient has a sample of blood drawn into a vial.

2. The blood is taken to a laboratory where it is placed in a centrifuge, a machine that rapidly spins the blood.

3. The centrifuge separates the blood into its different parts, including platelets essential to rebuilding damaged tissue.

4. The platelets are then drawn into a syringe and injected at the site of the injured tissue of the patient, typically using ultrasound technology to determine exact placement.

Injecting platelets into the injured tissue releases growth factors and increases the number of repair cells the body produces to promote a healing response.

WHAT CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED WITH PLATELET RICH PLASMA?

From sudden injuries to orthopedic tissue worn out over the course of a lifetime, PRP can be used to address a wide range of problems, including:

• Chronic tendon injuries: partial tendon tears and various types of tendonitis, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, patellar tendonitis, rotator cuff tendonitis and tennis elbow among others.

• Acute (sudden) ligament and muscle injuries.

• Mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, and shoulder.

• Cer tain tears in cartilage (labral tears) of the shoulder and hip.

Unlike medication injections sometimes used to treat these injuries, PRP typically doesn’t “wear off” after a certain amount of time. In fact, it may even take a few weeks for you to begin experiencing the benefits of PRP, which tend to grow stronger as the injured tissue is repaired. While a PRP booster injection may be needed after a year or more, you will not have to rely as much on pain medications. PRP also allows some patients to delay or avoid a surgical procedure and all that it entails.

SIGNS THAT PRP THERAPY MIGHT BE RIGHT FOR YOU...

One of the great things about PRP is that it can be used to safely (and non-invasively) address a wide range of orthopedic conditions and help people move better. In addition, many health plans cover the cost of PRP therapy, but you should check with your insurance provider to confirm.

PRP is most often used for people who:

• Have pain with daily activities.

• Are still experiencing pain after trying conservative measures such as home rehabilitation, corticosteroid injections or physical therapy.

• Have previously found relief with steroid injections but the relief did not last for as long as hoped.

• Have completed a physical therapy or home rehabilitation program to strengthen muscles around a joint and have had suboptimal results.

• Have not been able to find adequate relief after trying over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen.

Though it is not a cure-all, PRP is among the most exciting recent advances in the treatment of the common orthopedic injuries that impact everyone from elite athletes, to weekend warriors, to aging adults.

SEIZE THE DAY

For whatever reason, some people spend their life dreaming about places they would love to visit but never do, while there are others that find ways to fulfill their dreams, no matter the cost or sacrifice.

Obviously there are places some of us would love to visit but just cannot afford, be it time, money, or circumstance. As a contributing writer for Living Magazine, I have the opportunity throughout the year to share with you some of my travels. I am amazed at the number of readers that tell me they have always wanted to go to a certain destination, but just haven’t done it yet. My reply is always the same, “What are you waiting for?” There is so much to see and learn around the world, and so many destinations to experience.

So often we get caught up in the details of day to day living that we don’t take the time to seize an opportunity. We’ve got deadlines and commitments, problems and priorities, distractions and obstacles, and though we really want more fulfillment from every single day, we don’t often take the time we need to rest, relax, and recharge.

C. S. Lewis said: “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. My father-in-law was a banker for years, and very conservative about everything. He held back from experiencing a lot of extras in life, fearing the unknown and always wanting to make sure he and my mother in-law had what they financially needed to last their lifetime. Although that is an admiral trait, we encouraged both of them to enjoy

their lives, and quit worrying about a future they have no control over. After years of persuasion, they became more relaxed, applied for a passport, started traveling and even got certified in scuba diving in their sixties. We traveled with them to Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Turks and Caicos islands and the US Virgin Islands before my father-in-law was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and passed away.

Whether your ideal vacation involves a passport, or an RV; don’t just watch the Travel Channel, but visit the places you have always wanted to see, and experience the sites you have dreamed of. Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success. It’s not going to happen yesterday, and we can’t put it off until tomorrow, because tomorrow may not come. It’s a real challenge to face the present, because it means you can no longer say, “One of these days I’ll take that Alaskan cruise, drive across the country, ski the Swiss Alps, or climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.”

Seize the day and vow to make this summer the beginning of some new life adventures!

Wishing you all the best making your dreams come true.
