Voorwoord van de jaarboek redacteur Voor u ligt de zeventiende editie van het jaarboek van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Microbiologie. Ik hoop dat u ook dit jaar het jaarboek nuttig kunt gebruiken als u op zoek bent naar het adres van een collega of een instelling. Het is elk jaar een grote klus om dit allemaal bij te houden. Dit jaar was er vanwege het jubileumcongres te weinig tijd maar vanaf volgend jaar zullen alleen de adressen en internetadressen van de verschillende instellingen en onderzoeksgroepen worden vermeld. Deze informatie zal in de loop van het jaar ook op de webpaginas van de vereniging verschijnen. U kunt mij al enorm helpen door mij deze gegevens per e-mail te sturen. Op deze manier hoop ik dat u toch makkelijk aan de gewenste infromatie kunt komen. Maar belangrijker is dat de gegevens via de eigen internetpaginas van de instelling minder snel verouderd zullen zijn dan de gegevens in deze gedrukte versie. 1. Bestuursmededelingen 1.1 Bericht van de voorzitter Het is een prachtig jaar. Vanaf 20 april bestaat onze vereniging honderd jaar en dat vieren we met speciale evenementen en met aandacht in de pers. Bionieuws heeft inmiddels aandacht aan het eeuwfeest besteed en aan het bestaansrecht van onze vereniging. Daarnaast zal van april 18-20 een speciaal NVvM/NVMM voorjaarssymposium worden gehouden (op het moment dat u dit leest is dit symposium reeds geweest). Zeer prominente wetenschappers zullen spreken en Zijne Koninklijke Hoogheid de Prins van Oranje zal de opening van het congres meemaken. Hij zal het eerste exemplaar van de micro-canon in ontvangst nemen. In juni zal TNT Post een speciale postzegelserie uitgeven. Wie weet wordt uw favoriete micro-organisme op één van de postzegels afgebeeld! Dit is nog niet alles. In het najaar zal een congres voor master studenten worden georganiseerd. Het is de bedoeling dat dit een jaarlijks terugkerende gebeurtenis zal zijn. Vorig jaar zijn we gestart met een campagne om meer AIO’s en post-docs bij onze vereniging te betrekken. Hiertoe is het zogenaamde instituutslidmaatschap geïntroduceerd. AIO’s en post-docs kunnen via de onderzoeksgroep of het instituut tegen forse korting lid worden (voor meer informatie zie: www.nvvm-online.nl/modules/ nvvm_members). Het is belangrijk voor de jonge onderzoekers lid te zijn omdat de NVvM ontzettend veel te bieden heeft. Zo hebben we samen met de NVMM verschillende prijzen geïntroduceerd die op de voorjaarsvergadering worden uitgereikt. Het instituutslidmaatschap is nu al een succes. Mede door dit initiatief hebben we inmiddels meer dan 1280 leden en zijn we groter dan ooit. Toch zouden nog meer onderzoeksgroepen zich aan moeten melden! Ik hoop dat iedereen van het jubileumjaar zal genieten. Han Wösten NVvM voorzitter

What does MALDI-TOF stand for?
MALDI-TOF stands for Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization – Time Of Flight. It describes the way a sample is converted into charged particles, or ionized, and what method has been used to separate the different mass particles after charging. A spectrum is produced by measuring and plotting the different mass particles.

Cutting Edge Microbial Identification The rapid identification of microorganisms has been a major obstacle to clinicians as they struggle to provide appropriate antimicrobial treatment while waiting sometimes days for a definitive identification of the pathogen. Now, a new method has emerged that can reduce identification to a few minutes. Mass spectrometry (MS) is a technique used to screen simultaneously a multitude of molecules and determine their identity by analyzing their individual mass to charge ratio. These molecular “signatures” can be used for rapid bacterial and fungal identification (ID) from isolated colonies. The use of mass spectrometry for bacterial ID has been shown to be particularly suitable and cost-efficient for laboratories with high volumes of samples. But the big payoff for clinicians is the huge reduction in the time it takes to identify organisms. Specifically, mass spectrometry enables laboratories to rapidly identify organisms from colonies grown overnight and directly from select patient samples. This technology may also assist clinical microbiologists in facing the ever increasing number of potentially pathogenic species of bacteria and fungi. A modern identification system like MS coupled with a flexible database that can be easily updated and expanded can meet this growing challenge.
