Catedral

Metropolitana Maria Reina Entrar a la monumental Catedral Metropolitana María Reina es cruzar el umbral de la inmensidad. Se detiene el tiempo y el espacio, para admirar esta belleza exponencial de la arquitectura modernista, diseñada por el italiano Angelo Mazzoni de Grande. Su construcción tomó 27 años y tiene una capacidad para 4000 personas sentadas en un área superior a los 4000 metros cuadrados y 38 metros de altura. Está situada en la intersección de la carrera 46 con calle 53, frente a la Plaza de la Paz. El Cristo Libertador Latinoamericano inspira total admiración y respeto. Esta magnífica escultura elaborada en bronce tiene 16 metros de alto y pesa 16 toneladas. Entering the monumental “Catedral Metropolitana Maria Reina” (Maria Reina Metropolitan Cathedral) is like crossing the threshold into enormity. Time and space stop to admire this beautifully exponential modern form of architecture, designed by the Italian designer Angelo Mazzoni Grande. The construction took 27 years and has a capacity of holding 4000 people in an area exceeding 4000 square meters and 38 meters in height. It is located at the intersection of Carrera 46 and Calle 53, in front of the Plaza de la Paz. “El Cristo Libertador Latinoamericano” inspires total respect and admiration. This magnificent bronze sculpture is 16 meters tall and weighs 16 tons.

Fue concebida como un homenaje a Cristo que reconcilia al hombre con Dios. El hombre latinoamericano, representado por las razas blanca, indígena y negra, busca su salvación en Cristo y surge de una gran ola que recuerda el mar por el cual llegó la fe al continente. Huellas impresas en el pecho de Cristo son la imagen de ese pueblo que desea ser reconciliado consigo mismo, con la historia y con Dios. El fuego liberador surge del volcán del amor, cuyas llamas en forma de cruz y de ley glorifican y santifican. Cristo no lleva la corona de espinas en la cabeza, ya que no significa martirio. En su lugar se levanta de la espada como un sol que ilumina al pueblo latinoamericano. El altar de la catedral es una pieza de mármol en forma de yunque y tiene al frente una placa de bronce que representa el día de Pentecostés.

Los vitrales de grandes dimensiones y llenos de color a lado y lado del templo colosal, representan los siete sacramentos: Confirmación, Bautismo, Eucaristía, Penitencia, Matrimonio, Orden Sacerdotal y Unción de los Enfermos. Se destacan dos grandiosos mosaicos: el de San José, patrono de la Arquidiócesis de Barranquilla y el de María Reina, titular de la Catedral Metropolitana, cada uno conformado por 400 mil piezas aproximadamente. No cabe duda que somos una pequeñísima, pero fundamental parte de la obra de Dios, magistralmente recreada en la Catedral.

Elements present: man, nature, the stars and the Word of God, pay tribute to the “Universe Being Freed by Christ”. The large windows and full color on both sides of the colossal temple, represents the seven sacraments: Confirmation, Baptism, Penance, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick and the Dying. It highlights two great mosaics masterpieces: “San José, patrono de la Arquidiócesis de Barranquilla” and “Maria Reina”, the theme of the “Catedral Metropolitana”, each consisting of approximately 400 thousand pieces. No doubt that we are a tiny but crucial part of God’s work, masterfully recreated in the Cathedral.

Las Flores, el río que embelesa En el barrio Las Flores, al norte de la ciudad, los restaurantes especializados en pescados y mariscos parecen estar flotando suspendidos, uno tras otro sobre el Río. Allí se llega por toda la Vía 40, zona principalmente industrial, hasta su fin. Y entonces, después del pavimento se descubre un nuevo mundo: Nada como observar las tranquilas aguas del Río Magdalena, que recorren nuestro país de norte a sur. Su calmado pero inmenso caudal, la pasividad de las ondas que se dejan llevar por el viento, complementan una atmósfera caribeña que presume su naturaleza exuberante, capaz de embelesar a quienes contemplan su extensa magnitud. Mientras tanto, el aroma que proviene de la cocción del pescado, invita a los comensales a imaginar extraordinarios sabores. Mojarra frita o róbalo en salsa de coco, servidos en bandejas individuales con forma de pez, bañados en camarones y acompañados con patacón y arroz de coco, hacen fiesta en la mesa para complacer todos los gustos. Primero se frita en aceite la arepa de masa de maíz para que tome consistencia. Se saca y se le hace una abertura por el borde, donde se introduce el huevo crudo con mucho cuidado. El guandul o guandú es una leguminosa tipo frijol que se cultiva en el departamento del Atlántico, muy rica en proteínas y generosa en su cosecha. Unos 10 minutos antes de servir agregar los chicharrones y dejar cocinar a fuego medio. 4. Se puede servir con queso rallado rociado encima. INGREDIENTS: • * 12 cups of water • * 1 ½ lb of ribs • * ½ lb of toasted, chopped pork rinds • * ½ lb of guandues, soaked since the previous day • * 1 lb of peeled and chopped ñame • * 1 lb of peeled and minced cassava • * 1 peeled and diced green platain • * 2 sliced yellow plantains • * 1 cup of stew • * ½ cup of grated coastal cheese • * salt and pepper to taste PREPARATION: 1. Start cooking pidgeon peas with the ribs until they are soft, approximately 45 minutes. 2. Add the plantains, yams, cassava, stew, salt and pepper and continue cooking for approximately 40 minutes. 3. En 1924, un grupo pujante de dirigentes barranquilleros creó la Liga de Fútbol del Atlántico. Ya existía el fervor y la motivación para la constitución del club "Juventud Infantil", el cual fue el primer nombre de la escuadra que más tarde se conocería como "Juventud Junior" y después simplemente, Junior. Desde entonces el alma de los barranquilleros se tornó rojiblanca, erizando pieles y acelerando corazones. Este club deportivo se ha ganado un sitial en el mundo y en el argot popular ese respeto se afirma con solo tres palabras: Junior tu Papá. “La Puerta De Oro” (The Golden Gate) has served as a giant porthole for the arrival of soccer in Colombia, starting as early as the early twentieth century. Soccer has been a “gol” (goal) for life! In 1924, a powerful group of native leaders from Barranquilla created “Liga de Fútbol del Atlántico” (Atlantic Football-Soccer League). The enthusiasm and motivation for the foundation of the club “Juventud Infantil” was already there; which was the first name of the team that later became known as “Juventud Junior” and then simply, Junior. Since then, the soul of Barranquilla became red and white, escalating moods and accelerating hearts. This club has earned a place in the world and in popular jargon, this respect it is stated with just three words: “Junior Tu Papa” (Junior is your Dad”).

Barranquilla creció alrededor de esta, su primera iglesia. Hoy en día, ha vuelto a la vida de manera espléndida, marcando el triunfo de la historia y las costumbres que prevalecen. La plaza que lleva su mismo nombre fue epicentro de la vida social, cultural y comercial de Barranquilla desde el siglo XVIII hasta mediados del siglo XX. Allí se realizaban los bailes de tercera o salones burreros, que eran los bailes de carnaval de las clases populares. En la actualidad hace antesala a la majestuosa iglesia y es lugar de encuentro de lugareños y comerciantes del centro histórico. The newly restored Church of San Nicolas de Tolentino is a neo-gothic style building, located in the heart of the city. This historic structure dates back to the second decade of the seventeenth century, and its construction took about 300 years. Barranquilla was built around this historic structure, its first church. Recently, this newly restored church has made a comeback in a splendid manner, a tribute to the triumph of the history and the customs that prevail. The plaza, which bears the same name, was the epicenter of social, cultural, and commercial activities of Barranquilla from the eighteenth century until the mid-twentieth century. In those days and in that location, the bailes de tercera or dances of the third took place and were considered the carnival of the popular classes.
