ASSIGNMENT 4, SM2, 2019
STUDIO WEEK 1
DELTA 4.8.2019
• To begin with, the chosen buildings had to be analysed. It was crucial to understand what the buildings were about, what the architects intentions were and in what context these buildings are situated • Initial sketches will later lead to the diagrams produced in week 2.

STUDIO WEEK 2
DELTA 11.8.2019
• The first attempt of diagramming the School of Architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology investigates the process of how the context starts to inform the footprint of the building. • Furthermore, it explores how the circulation in and around the building is shaped by the fluidity of the spaces.

STUDIO WEEK 3
DELTA 10.08.19
• The building evolves from the existing site context which informs the footprint, form, circulation and materiality. • The openness of the building through repetitive windows in the facade further emphasise the connectivity of the building to its location. • The circulation informs the fluid architecture.

STUDIO WEEK 3
DELTA 10.08.19
• The repetitive yet varying arches of the Tama Library inform the program of spaces, the views captured and the spatial organisation. • Closed off or screened arches cater for varying densities within the open space which in turn allows for different qualities of space.

STUDIO WEEK 3
DELTA 10.08.19
• Media TIC in Barcelona investigates how the building interacts and meets the exterior conditions though expressive façades. • The experimental approach to modern architecture and its climate challenges is addressed through the mechanical shading system facing south and the chemical shading system on the west facade. • Pushing the service and circulation cores towards the north and south side of the building caters for a flexible interior layout and further accentuates the façades.

STUDIO WEEK 3
DELTA 10.08.19
• The key feature of the Leutschenbach School by Kerez is the expression of its primary structure on the outside of the building - a true, honest architecture. • The structure on the ground and fourth floor is located behind the glass facade in order to differentiate public and private realms.

STUDIO WEEK 3
DELTA 10.08.19
• The courtyards proposed by this competition entry cater for light to penetrate the building into its core and pose as its main design feature. • UIB Library functions as a cell-like interconnected structure with its sunken in courtyards catering for air circulation, water collection, roof gardens, terraces, and light penetration - much like an organism • Differing light qualities as emitted by the courtyards influence the layout of the furniture and guide the usage of spaces.

DELTA 2.9.19
• The model investigates the introduction of the exterior to the interior to create a stronger connection between the two. • The relationship between the two is increased when opening up the space directly towards the exterior.
ITERATION 1
EMMA KELLY 950391 11 ASSIGNMENT 2, SM2, 2019
26
STUDIO
DELTA 2.9.19
• Building on the previous iteration, the opening of the facade is further investigated. • The channelling aspect of the cone like forms is increased with opening the floors, a waterfall like space creates an interconnection of the floors.
ITERATION 2

27
STUDIO
DELTA 2.9.19
• The formal language of the facade in the previous iteration now informs the overall shape of the exterior and interior spaces. • The penetrating yet funneling exterior space moulds the buildings envelope.
ITERATION 3

28
STUDIO
DELTA 2.9.19
• To create a stronger connection of interior, exterior and context, the spaces are dropped into the ground. • Differing heights and depths of the spaces create circulation spaces, visual connectivity and interrelated or dispersed spaces.

WEEK 9
• The ground floor is a continuation of the exterior public realm. The glass curtain wall blurs the line of exterior and interior. • Retail and hospitality opportunities and the ground floor facing Little Bourke Street maintain the characteristics of the street and neighbourhood. • Services are located to the north of the building A
• The library is accessible from both sides and caters for easily accessed public services such as Wifi, computers and printers, as well as a collection of books.

• The archives underground are lit partially by the large cut-outs in the floor. • Worker-spaces, stud-space, maker-spaces and other technology based programs may take place in the subfloor. • The public roof park allows for leisure and a meeting space. • The green roof allows for improved storm water run off quality, increases biodiversity, and counteracts the urban heat-island effect.

STUDIO
DELTA 22.9.19
• The first iteration explores the formal possibilities of the landscape oriented design. • The rising and falling of the built form offers possibilities for an interaction of landscape, built and un-built form.

• The third model explores the structure of the library and its interaction with the floor plates. • The intended wooden structure is lightweight, only impacting the location as little as possible, with the possibility of being reused and recycled, after the lifespan of the building is over. Local materials shall be sourced. • The open structure allows for visible connection throughout the design, moments of interest and surprise and cater for human interaction with one another as well as the built environment.

STUDIO WEEK 10
DELTA 11.10.19
• The furthering of the design lead to the intention to open up the ground floor and to emphasise the public space • An articulated space through physical objects, ramps and furniture evokes the feeling of a continuation of the public space and landscape. • The Service cores are articulated and become an integral part of the design
