WEEK 9 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? For a perspectival projection to be correct, the perpendicular lines need to meet at a central vanishing point. This point is determined by the angle of the eye towards the picture plane, the window through which one looks into space or onto the object. Furthermore, all parallel lines have to have the same vanishing point and according to Dürer all dimensions decrease in their size equally as they seemingly retreat into space. If the location of the spectator’s eye is known, the projection becomes therefore calculable.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space?

Homogenous space is fully rational. This means that one has to assume that the only way to truly see the projection is through one immobile eye, erasing the essential nature of human sight of continuously merging two images. Points and objects exist purely mathematically and are perceived as such through their attribute of being mere items which hold mathematical information.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1 represents the first view Marco Polo has when he first enters Isidora. The lengthy view cuts right across the whole of the corridor which emphasises the movement through the space as he proceeds to enter and wander through the city. The tall openings on the side of the quad represent the space where he has come from after the long journey he has undertaken.

The second perspective shows the view of Marco Polo when he is amidst the city. Here the view is shorter and emphasises not the movement but the action in space. The columns can be seen as an intersecting device to differentiate strings of actions from one another.

6

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 As Marco Polo enters the city the feeling of desire and movement is predominant. The passage of time continuously proceeds, as he makes his way through the space. This is represented by the clock positioned in the centre of the composition, by the shadows, leading towards the left arches as well as the skull that is emphasised by said shadows. The positioning of the characters with none of them directly looking at the spectator of the scene, but facing each other in different angles, highlights the uprising of desire. Focusing on the inconsistency of time and space mentioned in the story, the scene is put in a surreal setting.

Perspective 2 resolves the anticipation of perspective 1. Here the actions implied by the dynamics between the figures in perspective 1 is depicted. Man and woman have found each other, a group of men fighting and a cockfight in the midst of it, all of this representing the two main notions suggested by the story, brutality and affection/attraction. Embodying the furthering of the passage of time, the sitting man has aged and sunk down in his posture. Also the end of one’s lifetime, death, is symbolically displayed. The figure in the front shows the decay of a body, as well as the insides of a human body eating through the outer skin.

WEEK 4 READING: TITLE OF READING Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice?

Autographic practise is in direct need of its original artist or author in order to be authentic. Its reproduction can never be as legitimate as the original work, as it has no notation as to how it is to be reproduced or interpreted. In contrast to this, allographic practise can be reproduced and remain authentic, as it is possible to translate its notation into instructions as to how to do so. It lives off the reinterpretation through different artists as they produce new realities.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? Nowadays, the traditional tools of representation are no longer sufficient as they fail to depict the newly developed interconnectedness of information streams, visible and invisible, capital and subjects that move constantly and leave behind a network of flows. The city is not reducible to an object that is easy to represent, it rather consists of interacting movement, which asks for newly interpreted representational means.
