THE FUNNEL HOUSE A N D F O R M F I N D I N G EMMA KELLY, 950391 STUDIO LEADER: STEVEN CHU, VMM SEMESTER 2 — 2018

The brief for the living house was to extend, transform and adapt the Edwardian house in 4 MacArthur Place North. It was intended to develop a layout for the house, which caters for a growing family over the course of the next 30 years. Furthermore it shall enable a better interaction between outdoor and indoor spaces, with better laneway access. The weaknesses of the site identified is the lack of sunlight access, the lack of utilisation of views, and the narrow and confined spaces throughout the house. The proposed design is intended to address and transform these weaknesses into a more liveable and adaptable space. WEAKNESS DIAGRAM

The Funnel House inherits 3 funnels to address the mentioned weaknesses. It looks at funnelling the exterior into the interior, funnelling or channelling movement throughout the space and order the spatial arrangements in such a way as it channels light and movement from private to public from the back of the house towards the front facing the backyard.

THE EDGES

The living neighbourhood project looks at designing a coherent set of small scale multi-unit residences on neighbouring blocks of land around 4 MacArthur Place North. It is intended to improve the neighbourhood character, whilst maintaining a respectful relationship to the historic built fabric of Carlton. Weaknesses identified in the group work included the lack of communal green space and lack of circulation through the space.

NOLLI PLAN

Taking the figure ground plan of the area and compressing it into the internal spaces of the properties, the proposed structures shall retain the connection to the historic built fabric of the suburb. It is translating the intangible into built form. The challenge here was how to create an inhabitable space, and how the Nolli Plan can be explored in plan and section. A shared balcony which is connected to both sides of the plot binds the spaces together and provides a platform to engage with the environment as well as with the other occupants. The green roofs address the urban heat island effect and shall provide a healthy environment for flora and fauna. The coworking space, gallery, bookable studio space and the commercial strip are propesed to activate the surroundings and draw people into the compound in order to provide a vibrant neighbourhood.

LIVING

NEIGHBOURHOOD

THE INTERCHANGE

C O N C E P T

A N D F O R M F I N D I N G

The second part of the brief after having densified and diversified the space by implementing a choice of dwelling types suitable for varying demographics, was to intensify the design. The second proposal explores the civic and materialistic deepening of the design. Weaknesses that were identified in the group proposal are the lack of interaction between the properties. Whilst having proposed a communal area in the middle and interweaving exterior paths, that concept wasn’t translated to the inside. This proposal aims at addressing the problem of isolation within society. The pushing and pulling of the spaces within the properties intend to break with the isolating planar, linear walls. By pushing in, taking away, giving, and pulling the neighbouring occupants are constantly reminded of the existence of an outside of each other. This is intensified through the physical openings that allow an actual physical interaction. Visual connectivity throughout the spaces and an omni-accessible rooftop and balcony add to the intensified program of interaction throughout the building complex. A singular approach regarding the material that also allows for physical interaction with the built environment adds to the overall approach of intensification. Wood was chosen due to its inherent property to age well with its surroundings –if maintained. Again, this maintains the intangible connection to the historic fabric of the suburb.

ASSIGNMENT 1

CHANGES

While the concept remaines the same, the floorplans, secitons, adaptation scenarios and perspectives have been updated.

ASSIGNMENT 2 Floorplans have been revised, with the front of the house becoming a semi private balcony, accessible from the second floor. This activates the corner condition of the property, softenes the edge and provides an additional outdoor area, which capitalises of the view towards MacArthur Square.
