Safeguard holds Handwashing Caravan By Brixter John O. Cabanilla

“Wash. Rub. Shield on!” This was the yell taught by Safeguard Team to pupils and parents during the Handwashing Caravan at Poblacion Barangay Plaza, Poblacion, Villaverde on Oct.15. Turod Elementary School was a first-time recipient of this global handwashing event. It helped educate both parents and pupils about the health benefits of washing their hands with soap and water. The event focused on three core principles: support a global culture of handwashing with soap and water, evaluate the handwashing aptitude to help measure improvement, and raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap. Parents were taught end encouraged to train their kids on good hygiene habits all year round. “It takes 20 seconds to wash our hands properly with soap and water-that’s as long as it takes to say (or sing) the ABC’s,” said Krizzle Mae Malaque, SPG President.

(photo by KFS) Mrs. Myda Valdez, school head, told the parents to teach their kids to sing while they wash so they learn to wash their hands for the right length of time. “It's clinically proven that washing hands with soap and water provides protection against illness caused by harmful germs and bacteria. In fact, effective

handwashing, done regularly (and correctly) with soap and water has been shown to save 4 million children a year from dying before their 5th birthday. How? By washing away germs that can cause preventable diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria,” Valdez added . At Safeguard, their mission is

To create awareness on the importance of proper infant and young child feeding practices, Turod Elementary School joins the nationwide celebration of the Nutrition Month last July 29, 2016. The celebration started with an opening program just after their flag ceremony. Mrs. Maricar B. Pacursa, Nutrition Coordinator, reiterated that proper nutrition for the first 1000 days is vital and is one of the concerns of the government. Various contested activities followed like slogan contest, poster making contest, cook fest and jingle contest. Pupils were able to

to help families around the world live life hands on, by protecting children with the right soap and proper handwashing practices. Through practical initiatives like Global Handwashing Day, they are helping millions of children every year by teaching them one simple message: Clean hands save lives.T

They were taught how to make and use sling bandage, burn face bondage, G collar, triangular board, top overhead bandage and spine board. During the contest proper, some of the pupils acted as rescuers, others as victims. Mun. Councilor Braulio Ocumen Jr. with the members of the DRRM Team of Villaverde assisted the handson training on the rescue process of the victims and they also served as judges during the contest proper. The second day of the training was filled with topics like how to handle problems, how to become a good leader and a good follower, how to manage oneself and how to keep oneself safe from any disaster. Outdoor games were given to the pupils on the following day. Sportsmanship, camaraderie, punctuality and creativity were among the values inculcated with the pupils. Brgy. Captain Zanaida Martinez made sure that the children are safe and wellequipped before, during and after a disaster striked. “It is my goal to help our children know what to do when they are confronted with different problems, challenges and disasters not on;y today but for the years to come. Surely, they will be bombarded with these, we just never know when, where or how. That’s why I want to prepare them in case of emergencies,” Martinez said with conviction. “This is very timely and we are very thankful for this training. We will surely use all these skills that they’ve taught us in our daily life,” said Ashley Maraña, a Grade V pupil.T

Hon. Ronelie U. Valtoribio, municipal Mayor and a speaker of the said forum, stressed on the importance of the knowledge of the IPs about their ancestral lands and mining impacts to them. “Ang lupa ng katutubo ay hindi nakabatay sa pirasong papel kundi nakabatay sa kasaysayan kung paano inalagaan ang lupang kinalakhan,” Valtoribio said on her discussion of the Phil. Mining Act and the ALARM (Ancestral Lands at Risk of Mining). EDITORIAL

ARE YOU READY?

If there is a disaster kid, will you be prepared? Environmental degradation frequently plays a key role in the occurrence as well as severity of disaster events. For example, deforestation can increase the risk of landslides and flash floods. Recognizing this relationship between environmental degradation and disaster events has led to environmental management instruments being seen as a key tool for reducing disaster risk. Past typhoons and earthquakes have already taught Filipinos that in the absence of emergency measures, massive infrastructure destruction and high toll on human lives are always expected in an ill-prepared locality during disasters. This is the reason why we are used to have simultaneous earthquake and fire drill every year. This is in response to Republic Act No. 10121 known as “Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010”. It is very important that we involve children in the drill not just to educate them but to let them be prepared on the impact of these natural or manmade disasters for they are among those most at risk for the

negative effects of disasters. Children are psychologically vulnerable and may develop posttraumatic stress disorder; are physically vulnerable to death, injury and illnesses and often experience disruptions and delays in their educational progress as a result of disaster. However, Children also have the capacity to contribute to disaster preparedness, response and recovery activities. Children are absolutely entitled to participate in decisions that have any effect on their lives. Therefore, their concerns should be addressed especially in disaster prevention and rebuilding process. In order to promote children’s resilience to disasters, we must improve their access to resources, empower them by encouraging their participation, offer support and ensure equitable treatment. Either living in rural or urban areas, they should have knowledge about how to respond during and after the disasters. And, involvement of children to create a wider awareness among their fellow children can help save many precious lives. T

Discipline: A Catalyst for Change

LETTER

to the

KRIZZLE MAE A. MALAQUE Editor In-Chief

Discipline is very an important virtue that every individual must possess in order to achieve his goals in life and to have good relationship with others. It is an effective armour in any battle and one of the pillars of success. It is a fact that lack of discipline is one of the problems in learning institutions. Wearing of improper uniform, coming to school late, vandalism, noisiness during flag ceremony, improper waste disposal, engaging in troubles and other untoward behaviors are just some of the school problems. The reason? Lack of discipline. As one of the concern pupils, let’s take a look of our behaviour during flag ceremony. Why chatting with friends or doing some other

things when the singing of national anthem is going on? Why hitting each other which caused so much commotions? Is it difficult on your part to sing the national anthem by heart? We keep of complaining why things are not easy for us. Why some teachers always scold or punish us? But did we ever try to ask ourselves why? Certainly, we know the answer of our question but we only

refuse to accept the fact of it or even to refuse to believe. Lack of discipline made us built walls of misunderstanding instead of bridges of unity and oneness. We youths of today’s generation have many expectations from us. The future of our country lies on us thus, we should not ignore our capacity to contribute to its progress in the future. Let us make giant step for a change. T

Point of View The Wonder of Smiling BRIXTER JOHN O. CABANILLA Associate Editor

Go out and take that first step! The easiest way to glamorous, pretty, friendly and attractive is simply by smiling. When you smile or laugh, the brain produces endorphins. These are chemicals inside our body that help relieve stress. Smiling makes you feel good. It is something that can lift mood in any situation. Why? Because smiling so often will make you see things in positive and lighter side even if they seem to be negative. Try to face the mirror and smile. When you do it, the feelings reflect in your eyes which serve as the door of your personality which create great impact on your face. Smiling at yourself improves your selfconfidence and intensifies your

vigor. It also releases tension that makes you look more appealing. Smiling at someone has a great impact because you are sending a thought to him that you are a happy and friendly individual- someone who is easy to be with. When you smile to others, you are boosting their emotional and mental state positively. One genuine smile can make a big difference in someone else’s day. Sometimes, it feels strange to smile because the facial muscle becomes tired. If it does, meaning you didn’t do it often. So just keep it on smiling not just to make you feel good and pretty well but to exercise your facial muscle as well. But you must remember that genuine smile is an involuntary response. It is

automatically reflected by the stimuli. So try to smile always and do it genuinely. We can also say that smile is the best accessory in which we can wear. It appears naturally and reflects genuine beauty. It comes for free, so why don’t we give them freely? Don’t keep it yourself. Share it to everyone. It is the best way to win a friend. Start wearing a smile. T

On the eyes of a Child

One of the advocacies of our president Rodrigo Duterte is on Drugs. He wants that Philippines must be freed from drugs. This could only be done if pushers and users will surrender for a renewal but many of them were being killed in the process. I interviewed some of my fellow pupils in our school on their stand regarding the issue on judicial killings and these are their responses. Different views of pupils on the question, “What is your stand on the issue of judicial killings?”

“ “ “

God has only the right to judge and get our life for he was the one who created us. Why killing?

Killing is one of the written commandments of God that we must not do. I believe on the sanctity of life. Life for me is a gift from God, that’s why no one must take it from us.

I agree on the process of our president in eliminating those people. They have no right to live in this world. They are just destroying the life of the youths.

Every individual has the right to live. That is one of the rights of human being. If this is so, why do they practice judicial killings? They are violating this human right. I beg to disagree on this.

Even God forgives sinners. He never weighs the sins made by us. This act is contrary to what the government is doing to our brethren.

Tips on writing journals JHOANNA MJ F. GUIEB Sports Editor

Are you writing journals? If not, you are missing out on one’s life’s greatest pleasures: that of recording your life story. No, we’re not talking about records of who are our crushes or experiences inside the school campus or what we are doing in our house. A diary or a journal is so much more than that. It is a way of relishing every bit and morsel of your life. It is a place to organize thoughts, record memories and to remember special moments. There is no specific way of writing our journal. Journaling is really like talking to oneself. Remember, you are writing to yourself. We have different styles in doing it. Every person will discover a different style. Some write in the mornings before they start their day; some write in the evenings before going to sleep. Following are a few tips to help you start or maintain your journal: •Your journals do not have to be exclusively about words. •Journaling can be in the form of writing letters to either yourself or a close confidante. •Writing journal is one way of unleashing one’s creativity. •Journaling could be a form

Remarkable Ideas Let us Make Difference HAZEL SCARLET O. MARAÑA News Editor

What is Philippines after a decade without intelligent leaders? A question on which we, leaders, who are next in line, must answer. If we are called to lead, then we must lead. We cannot escape from the call of leadership. But what is leadership? What could one expect from leading? Some thought that the counterpart of it is hardship. That’s true! If we add leadership and hardship automatically that the sum is excellence. Easy to say but difficult to attain. If one wishes to lead, then

he should consider some factors in order to succeed. First and foremost, a leader must be patient. Patience is one of the values that a leader must possess –patience in doing his duties and responsibilities; patience in dealing with others. Commitment is another. A committed public servant is ready to make sacrifices and give in his best. He should always consider the needs of others before himself. Humility is also needed. The higher you achieve, the lower you

PHILIPPINES COMPANY, led a project in Surigao to explore and mine "Deuterium" — one of the two stable isotopes of hydrogen, also known as heavy hydrogen. In his proposal called "Deuterium In The Philippines may Generate $30B Per Year Income" that was released internationally, the proponent explained why Deuterium could make Philippines the richest country in the world.

USES OF DEUTERIUM Deuterium is used in the production of (Hydrogen) Li-Hy Fuel now used in Canada, America, Germany, and some parts of Sweden to provide fuel for cars, trucks, jet planes, etc. including solid Hydrogen for Spacecrafts Challenger and Columbia . Deuterium can replace gasoline, LPG, LNG, Avgas, etc. in powering all types of internal combustion engines. It does not emit pollutants or any harmful carbon monoxide and does not cause any environmental problems because it is in the water family as emissions are nothing but watervapor or steam. Deuterium as Hydrogen Fuel can be used for cooking, lighting, heating, and as Heavy Water fuel for Reactors in electric power generation. Why does Deuterium

electrolyze out of water in the form ofHydrogen Gas? It electrolyzes out of water in the form of Hydrogen gas because Deuterium is CONCENTRATED HYDROGEN with element symbol, H2 (Hydrogen mass of 2 as distinguished from H2O in Water) subjected to the pressure of water mass atthe ocean floor of about 10,000 psi or more because Deuterium obtained from depths of more than 7,000 meters below sea level and at more than 10,000 psi pressure causes the oxygen in water to disengage, separate and escape naturally from hydrogen leaving only Hydrogen isotopes to combine with other Hydrogen isotopes in forming Deuterium under pressure. And Deuterium under pressure, when exposed to room temperature or atmospheric condition, forms or electrolyzes naturally into Hydrogen Gas, in the same manner that LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) in LIQUID state transform into gas after fusion process with air in the atmosphere the momentLPG or LNG tank valves are turned on or opened. By taking out impurities from Deuterium, Li-Hy Fuel is produced by special simple process at very, very low cost known to this proponent and his associates.

Cheap Hydrogen will reactivate all idled Hydrogen Based Industries internationally affected by high petroleum costs, and this will boost food, chemical, and metal industries worldwide. WHAT I THINK ABOUT MEDIA? Media have an important role in values formation and development. Media may highlight positive reports. They may be good and can bring good information. But how will the present generation reacted on the question, “What I think about Media?” Here are some of their responses:

The media makes the people act, either positively or negatively. They can inform and educate or motivate people to act.

Media have many positive influences on us. They educate us with new information, ideas and concepts. They also entertain.

Media per se are not bad. But some people behind media want only to make profits. So they don’t bother to choose good programs to show to the public.

Without media, I believe that we would be dull. Our life would be boring. It helps us to interact with friends, teachers and neighbors.

Media could educate us but it could harm us. Violent shows on Television screen and brutal newspaper headlines. When we see these, they give great impact in our life. Shows on television or in the movies are deteriorating with all those kissing scenes or sex scenes.

Theoretically, granites are massive, and have no bedding or stratification like sandstones and limestone but all rock masses are usually found to be more or less shattered by movements of the earth's crust which occur as a result of its constant readjustment to the cooling and shrinking interior, so that the rocks are divided by cracks or fissures, which are commonly known as joints. In the massive granites these joints, which usually occur in two or more planes at right angles to one another, are of the greatest importance to the quarryman, as they enable him to separate masses of stone with approximately parallel faces. Wonder of Papaya Leaves

w

ith the number of people catching dengue fever seemingly on the rise every year in the Philippines especially during this rainy season, the demand for a simple and inexpensive remedy has never been higher, and as with so many common ailments, the modern medical system is not very helpful. It is the common papaya leaf. Since they’ve discovered this, many people have managed to successfully and quickly cure dengue without spending a fortune on hospital visits. The best news of all is that you can easily make it at home. Sounds too good to be true? Well, plenty of studies have showed positive results. At this time, the only known cure for Dengue is papaya leaf, which is still not well known to

doctors or the public. The juice or pulp made from this plant has been found to be quite effective not only in fighting the symptoms of dengue fever, but also in curing it. Papaya leaf is not only helpful in fighting dengue, but also possess some extraordinary anti-cancer and anti-malarial properties. According to a 2010 research from the reputable Journal of Ethno pharmacology, many enzymes found in papaya leaves are known for their anti-cancer properties,

fighting breast, liver, cervix, pancreatic and lung cancer. These studies showcase the properties of papaya leaf and outline that it does not have any toxic effects on the body. Some doctors have moved even further, beginning to recommend papaya leaf as an integral part of chemotherapy treatments. These amazing natural ingredients have been found to regenerate white blood cells and platelets. Not only that, but they contain over 50 ingredients that support the immune system, including important Vitamins such as A, C and E. How to prepare the home-made medicine? There are two ways which you can use. It is very important to remember that papaya leaf has to be RAW, which means no boiling, nor cooking. Both methods have been reported to work well, but the leaves must be fresh, and do not make tea out of them.

Volume No. 2 Issue No. 1

The Juice Method

For this method, it is recommended to extract the juice out of papaya leaves by crushing. After removing the stems and other fibrous parts you should crush the other part, the greener one. You can use a cloth filter or any other type of device to squeeze the juice out. However, remember that the leaves have to be fresh. If you don’t use raw fresh papaya leaves, the outcome might not be that good and the positive effect will be minimized. You need about two leaves for each treatment. Take two tablespoons of juice every six hours, three times a day and you will certainly feel better.

2.

The Paste Method

You can use a food processor or a grinder to turn the leaves into a paste. It is recommended to mix it with some fresh juice. Take four teaspoons twice a day. After three days you will see the difference.

to the

EDITOR Dear Editor, Christian Greetings! I am 11 years old and have this wart on the right finger of my hand. It is not painful but it bothers me specially when I am writing and when I shake or hold hands with people. I have tried scraping it with blade but it has grown back again. What else can I do? Truly yours, Jomar Seridon, Grade 6 ******* To you Jomar, Thank you for writing. Warts are caused by a virus belonging to the papilloma group, of which the most common is the verruca vulgaris, known as the common wart. The virus attack the skin, forming a lesion- pea-size, thick and horny. Warts occur most commonly in the young or during one’s childhood. They may grow in any part of the body but most especially on the hands and fingers. While some warts respond to simple treatment, others can stubbornly recurrent. Still other spontaneously disappeared without any medication. Treatment comes in many forms. The most convenient is by application of sulfuric, nitric and trichloroacetic acids. The wart is pared carefully, then painted with the used of toothpick, pointing deeply on the roots of the warts. Some experts suggest cure by psychotherapy or by using the power of mental suggestion alone. Yours truly, Editor

Every Saturday at 2 p.m., the activities of the Borda Psychiatric Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina, come to halt as fidgety patients gathered around portable radios, eagerly waiting for their favorite radio program. “Good Afternoon, you crazy people, Loony radio is on the air” the announcer yells, to the applause of the patients. “Today, we will hear reflections from Graces, the emperor of Paranoia, and next we’ll have a report from our correspondent on Mars.” This may sound like mockery or unsavory humor but Loony radio is actually produced and hosted by Borda patients as part of their therapy. The said radio program became one of Argentina’s bests. It is broadcast live every week to the 1,300 patients of the hospital. It is intended as a bridge between the hospital and

the outside world, giving patients contact with the society. Society is also given a chance, through the program, to understand the mental ill. “ People make fun of mental patients because they don’t understand them and are literally scared to death of them; said Alfredo Olivera, a psychology graduate who founded the program. “ But when people hear patients making fun of themselves or speaking intelligently about issues of the day, they begin to realize that they really have nothing to fear. “ The format for loony Radio is somewhat free- flowing as patients present news headlines, interviews, commentary, songs, poetry and spirited debates. Loony Radio received a special honor as top broadcasting awards in recognition of the show’s social contribution and popularity.T

RONALD “BATO” DELA ROSA How well do you know PNP Chief "Bato" dela Rosa? - PNP Chief Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa is the current right hand of President Rodrigo Duterte

Philippine National Police Chief Ronald dela Rosa is the right hand of President Rodrigo Duterte in his all-out war against illegal drugs in the Philippines. Together with the President, he vowed to take the war to the doorsteps of drug lords. Known as “Bato” in his home town Davao City, he used to be a normal cop until Duterte chose him to head the 160,000-strong Philippine National Police (PNP). As soon as Bato took over the position, he was faced with a daunting task of ending crime in the Philippines within 3 to 6 months, as promised by the President himself to tahe Filipino people. Running after criminals is not new to Dela Rosa. He was the Police Chief of

Davao City from January 2012 to October 2013. His loyalty served Duterte and his daughter Inday Sara. Dela Rosa’s key mission in Davao City was to end the use and sale of illegal drugs in the city. The Oplan TukHang of the local police in Davao made police officers go door-to-door on the houses of known drug dealers and users. “It worked!” said Dela Rosa with pride and joy, as he pointed out that the illegal drugs in Davao went down by 60%. However, the mission of Dela Rosa now is way harder because he would be handling the safety of over 100 million Filipinos while also putting an end to the illegal drug trade in the country. In 1986, Duterte and Dela Rosa’s paths crossed when Dela Rosa was a young lieutenant in Davao while Duterte was the appointed acting vice mayor

after the EDSA People Power Revolution. Dela Rosa narrated that Duterte was even one of the principal sponsors when he got married to his wife. Through the years of working very closely with Duterte, Dela Rosa was considered as trustworthy and intelligent by the President. Dela Rosa went on by saying that they shared good memories together. “We’re both known to be very good shots. President Duterte is very good with his rifle; I am very good with my pistol,” recalled Bato. With the success of the campaign against illegal drugs of the Duterte administration, many Filipinos are looking forward to what the President and PNP Chief Bato have to offer as service to the Filipino people.T

VILLAVERDE E D E N O F A B R IG H T F U T U R E F O R C H I L D R E N

This excerpt from the Villaverde March speaks well of my lovely town Villaverde, a multi-awarded municipality and the reigning Philippines’ Most Child Friendly Municipality for two consecutive years.

Green fields, mighty mountains and hills, tall trees and wide meadows. These are just some features of the lovely town of Villaverde, the reigning Philippines Most Child Friendly Municipality. I am blessed that I am one of the lucky residents of Villaverde. Why? It is because the local government has heart for us children. The convergence of all their plans to promote general welfare for children has positive results and impacts on us. Indeed, the executive and legislative departments of the municipality have strengthened their

commitment to the promotion and protection of children’s right by passing executive orders and enacting ordinances that are all focused on the protection of children. Villaverde’s strategy had been to embark on childfriendly initiatives to ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of children. Its focus was on children’s right to a healthy, caring, protective, educative, stimulating, non-discriminating, inclusive and culturally rich environment. Everyone has recognized children as citizens with rights

to express their opinions. This recognition of the primacy of the child and the barangay in nurturing of the human resources of the country is at the heart of the Millennium Development Goals and current thinking as well on what should be the priority in national development. The government recognizes that a livable environment for children can only be sustained through innovations in governance- a more accountable bureaucracy and responsive delivery of social services- health, education, environment and food security. Villaverde promoted and strengthen the Child Friendly movement through municipal ordinance enacted institutionalizing the annual Search for Most Child- Friendly Barangay. The convergence of municipality’s plans to promote the general welfare of the children has afflicted positive results considering that children hold the future. The awareness and commitment of the local government unit’s officials should always be considered and assured.

Throughout the years, the LGU’s strategic framework is sensitive to the needs of the child based on the premise that certain conditions promote child rights. These conditions are best describe as a movement towards a Childfriendly Municipality where children are nurtured and allowed to grow and developed in dignity, protected from threats to their well- being and freed to express themselves and participated in their development. The power to create or bring about these conditions lie in the hands of every person that comes in contact with and interact with children, such as, the family being the most immediate and consistent environment of the child to grow and to develop as human being. Ten years from now, I know being one of the products of Villaverde, I can share and be proud to shout and tell every individual whom I would meet that I am one of the children being loved and cared by Villaverde. I may say now that with my Beloved Villaverde, children will live happily ever after.T Photos from the Internet

KIDS CONGRESS A Way To Prepare Children I was sitting on a long bench nearby a big molave tree beside our classroom when my best friend goes near me and ask if I will join the Kids Congress. I was not able to answer him right away for I was not being informed on that matter. Astonishingly, I asked him, “What are you talking about?” “What is the Kid Congress all about?” he automatically frowned and stared at me and said, “Are you not aware that our school was chosen to attend a workshop concerning disaster preparedness? And you are not exempted on this.” The words of my friend slowly captured my interest. I told him that I am very much willing to join the congress and I volunteered myself to be his buddy for the said event. I went home earlier than that of what I habitually do after the bell rang for the last period in the afternoon. On my way home, I noticed some people in the Barangay plaza who were decorating. Some of them were busy preparing the hall. I went near the plaza and read the

tarpaulin “ KIDS CONGRESS 2016” oh, this is what my friend talking about. I asked one of the coordinators what are the activities to be taken and he told me that there will be discussion on the proper techniques in rescuing victim during earthquake; there are also discussions on how to prepare ourselves for different disasters like earthquake. I thank him for the information and promised him that I will join the Congress. He smiled back and said “Good Luck.” I continued my journey. As I reached a canteen nearby, some groups of pupils discussing the congress, one says “I am excited doing the activities for tomorrow” “I could be a hero of my own” he added. I just smile at them and continued my walking. Finally, I reached our house. There, was my mother busy in her cooking routines. There was my father who was viewing television with my little brother. I just greeted them and did some chores. After some time, my mother called us for our dinner. We

are enjoying our meal when I interrupted them by asking if they let me join the Kids Congress tomorrow. They smile, “My son, you can gain important information if you join, you are to be educated. All the things you are about to learn can be used as you live in this world.” My father said. With these words I came in to a conclusion that the activities to be done in the Kids Congress are beneficial. I woke up early in the morning and prepared myself for the Kids Congress. I started walking towards the venue. As I reached the Barangay Plaza, participants, speakers and organizers were already there. I found myself sitting with my best friend who at that time was smiling at me. The first speaker discussed the importance of the Kids Congress followed by the discussion on the different techniques of rescuing a victim during earthquake and fire disasters. I listen to all the speakers attentively until we are

The activities were all enjoyable most especially the rescuing part. I kept in mind all the important things I learned and I also shared them to my family who was not present during the congress. T

fugaos are not only living on the mountainous provinces of Cordillera. They reached even the plains of Nueva Vizcaya because of inter-marriage. Some might say, they are not the originals, but as long as you are a part of their tribe, you are an original.

The Ayangan Ifugao are a large subgroup of the Ifugao, a MalayoPolynesian people group of the Philippines. With over 50,000 people, the Ayangan Ifugao comprise about half of the Ifugao population. The Ayangan language belongs to the Austronesian language family. The Ifugao are famous for their advanced system of terraces cut into the sides of the mountains. The terraces are irrigated by diverted streams and springs that flow through them. Most of the Ayangan are involved in farming. The most important crop is rice, which is grown on terraces. Also grown on terraces, interspersed throughout the rice, are crops such as

cotton, beans, radishes, cabbage, and peas. On unterraced mountainsides, the Ifugao practice "slash and burn" agriculture. This means that once the crops

restore the well-being of the village. The head would be placed as a trophy in the home of the man who had cut it off. Ayangan religion is quite complex. It recognizes eleven different classes of deities. The most important deities are those of the spirits of dead ancestors. If a dead ancestor becomes displeased for some reason, the people sacrifice a chicken or pig to pacify the ancestor. The belief in ancestral spirits greatly influences funeral rituals: the Ifugao attempt to honor a dead person by treating the body with the utmost respect. The body of the deceased is dressed in its finest clothes and strapped in a chair. If the family of the departed person is wealthy, the body is carried from one house to another, as each branch of the family tries to outdo the others by giving a feast in memory of the deceased. This process sometimes continues for two weeks. The body is then moved to a cave. After a year, the bones are removed from the cave, washed,

and wrapped in a blanket. The blanket is then placed on a shelf in the back of the family's house. The Ayangan continue to be bound by their religion. Although missionaries have worked among them many times throughout the years, response has been limited, especially among the Ayangan Ifugao. Prayer warriors are needed to intercede on behalf of the Ayangan. Villaverde, Nueva Vizcaya embraced these brethren as they shared their culture and preserved their culture with the people of the town. The rich beliefs were respected by other tribes of Villaverde. They unite with them with respect and acceptance. Though they communicate in different ways, they are being united as one through the spirit of nationalism. T

Barangay Basketball League Local Sports Program, a must! As our society becomes more inactive, more of us children are wasting their days by coming home from school and playing Xbox, dota or surfing the web. Community sports programs like the Basketball sa Barangay” offers an alternative to this waste of time. Local sports programs play an important role in the community as well as with all individuals who participate. Participation in sports not only aids physical and mental maturation, but it also has numerous positive effects later in life. It is very important that youth get involved in the programs that result from the hard work of many people in our

community. Not only does participation in these programs offer excitement and fun, it also offers numerous physical and emotional benefits. The physical activity that results from participating in sports has been found to build healthy bones and muscle, reduce the risk of chronic disease, and reduce the chance of being overweight. Today 17.1 percent of children from the ages of 2 to 19 are reported to be overweight. Participation in youth sports has also been linked to development of interpersonal skills such as making new friends, enhancing social skills, and gaining confidence in being able to relate to peers. Research also shows that kids who participate in sports have

reduced feelings of anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. Sir Lemuel Santos, district PESS coordinator says, “There are so many lessons that kids learn through athletics, they are countless. Some of those lessons are teamwork, how to handle adversity, as well as how to handle success.” Another advantage of youth recreation programs is that they offer the opportunity for anyone and everyone to play. A child may love playing chess or volleyball but not have an interest in the dedication required to sacrifice that many weekends. A recreational league offers competitive participation while only playing 15-20 games. Also, a child that doesn’t have the necessary skill level to make the travel team can play recreation ball where

all children play regardless of ability. Brgy. Captain Zenaida Martinez likes the aspect of everyone getting an opportunity to play. “ I think it is important for a kid who doesn’t necessarily have a lot of skill to feel that he is part of a team, and know that not everyone can be the star, but every member of that team is important.” “There are way more important things in life than winning the league, the local sports program is a champion itself. It helps the younger generation win in the game of life! I salute the organizers of this local sports program. You are the real winners!T

Diaz ends 20-year PH medal drought after bagging silver in Rio Olympics By Christine Joy M. Hernandez

Hidilyn Diaz broke a 20-year medal drought for the Philippines after winning the silver medal Sunday night (Monday morning, Manila time) in the weightlifting competitions of the XXXI Olympiad. Diaz lifted a total of 200 kilograms to finish second behind gold medalist Hsu ShuChing of Chinese Taipei in the women's 53 kg. class, ending a medal dry spell that dates back to boxer Mansueto 'Onyok' Velasco's silver in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Diaz also became the first ever Filipina, and the first in weightlifting, to land in the Olympic for the country. The 25-year-old native of native of Zamboanga City previously competed in the 2008 Beijing (wildcard) and 2012 London Olympics but came home empty handed on both campaigns. This time, there was no denying her. It was an unlikely turn of events for Diaz, who was actually about to settle for the bronze since fancied Li Yaun of China, who just moments earlier set an Olympic record in the snatch after lifting

101 kilograms, still has two attempts left in the clean and jerk. But to the horror of the crowd at the Riocentro Pavilion 2, Li couldn’t complete her final two attempts at 126 kilos, thus eliminating her from a podium finish. Shu-Ching won the gold convincingly with a total lift of 212 kgs. or 12 kgs. ahead of Diaz. The Filipina actually had a slow start when she only lifted 88 kilos in the snatch to finish fifth at the halfway mark of the competition. Li quickly showed the way following her record breaking feat at 101 kgs, followed by Shu-Ching with 100. But Diaz bounced back in the clean and jerk, lifting 112 kilos on her second try to surpass third-running Yoon Jun Hee of South Korea and assure herself of a podium finish. “Thank you, Lord,” she

shouted shortly after. Hsu lifted 112 kg on her second try and didn’t even bother to lift a third try following the disastrous finish by the Chinese lifter. Hsu is now looking to claim the gold medal from the London Games four years ago. The Taiwanese champion called on Olympic officials to decide on the matter, after retest of samples from 2012 Olympics winner Zulfiya Chinshanlo turned out positive. The Kazakh lifter was suspended in June and was not entered in Rio.T
