is hopeful of a good partnership among her co-officers for the next school year. “The hope was to have the whole of Marian Reform as SCC but I know everything happened for a reason. It doesn’t matter who won, it’s what that person does with the position that matters. I’m just thankful for the opportunity. As for Deia, I’ve known her since high school so at least we have common ground. What we’ll be doing throughout the year is strengthening our bonds, just like with the other officers,” she added. After a year of not joining in the international tourism conference, 48 junior Marian tourism students represented Saint Mary’s University in the 2nd International Tourism and Hospitality Students’ Convention (ITHSC), CAP Convention Center, Camp John Hay, Baguio City, Feb. 4. Various international and national tourism industry professionals highlighted the said convention which focused on the Philippines as an emerging Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (M.I.C.E.) hotspot in Asia.

Mrs. Aileen Lamson, HTM Instructor and co-faculty-incharge of event, pressed that as Marian tourism students they should also be immersed in the events management industry as they get a deeper understanding of the tourism industry. “The students’ participation to such conferences is salient to supplement the theories learned through an experience where they can get a deeper understanding on how an event is done. Aside from the knowledge is the affiliation which is important nowadays as an event organizer for the

connections we need to build,” Lamson explained. Aside from joining the international convention, SMU also joined the 5th National League of the Tourism Students Skills Olympics (NLTSSO), University of Baguio, Baguio City, February 5. SMU was represented by Lyell Gerard Tankiamco, who won silver medal, and Kym Rombert Quezon in the Destination Photography, while Yumiko Angelius Yoshiy, Jamella Canonizado and Julie Anne Tricia Manalo in the Tourism Quiz Bee. Suguitan furthered that after

the successful participation in both the conference and in the skills olympics, SMU would be sending more tourism students in the conference and would be participating in more events in the skills olympics for the next years. Among the resource speakers were Miss Ben Montgomery, director of business management of the Centara Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Thailand; former Rotary International Coordinator for Philippines and Indonesia Mr. Rolando Villanueva,; Dr. Thirumaran

Kailasam, acting associate Dean for Business and Information Technology and Senior Lecturer in Business, Hospitality and Tourism Management of James Cook University, Singapore, and Dr. Robert Lim, Chairman of the Tourism Educators and Movers, Philippines. ITHSC 2016 was organized by the Tourism Educators and Movers of the Philippines (TEAM Philippines), and League of the Tourism Student of the Philippines (LTSP) in cooperation with the University of Baguio, who also organized the 5th NLTSSO. Bahni also mentioned how the faculty, staff and students presently take action to bring the essence of the theme. “If you have seen the poster presentations displayed at the patio of A-building, you would have seen researches like profiling biodiversity, green engineering and attitudes towards environmental issues. These are the concrete examples of what we can do

Part of the weeklong celebration is the annual search for the Top Outstanding Students of Saint Mary’s University (TOSSMU) where the top 3 from the different year levels are awarded. Yvan Joselle Lucas, BSIT 1, TOSSMU silver awardee gave her thoughts on being awarded among freshmen students. “Ang Linggo ng Likha at Lingkod ay to discover and acknowledge [the] students and teachers sa kanilang mga potentials and efforts para sa paglinang ng kanilang mga talents,” Lucas said. Lucas likewise stated that this acknowledgment will greatly help in the contribution of the individual’s talent and skills for realization of the significance of the event. “As we are given the

command to be stewards for this God-given gifts, we must revert back and remember to open our hearts and lend our hands to help for [the] recovery of the environment and for the community. ,” she added. Meanwhile, to spread further the importance of the celebration, speakers inspired the Marian Community in response to the call. This year was a very crucial one for each and every one of us, ‘cause it was the stage

where we had to prove that we earned the Hall of Fame title and that we could keep it up. Of course, none of us wanted to break our five-year streak, so we really worked hard on all our published issues and studied for our individual contests, It wasn’t easy, we had so many setbacks and constantly had to find motivation to bring out only the best so to see all our efforts pay off was wonderful,” said Bangad. Valite, TM news editor, said the awards were just their bonuses as students who work for delivering quality issues. “Those awards are just proof that all our hard work to serve the Marian community hasn’t gone to waste. We didn’t make those issues solely for the awards. The recognition we received were just extras. The true price in there is having to serve our purpose to deliver quality articles to those who read our issues,” she explained. The LHEPC will take place on February 4-6 at Vigan, Ilocos Sur.M

Playground demo pushes through amid heavy rain

By Gliaczy Gapuz and Ma. Veronica Ortiz

The show must go on! Despite the unfavorable weather condition, Marians under the P.E. 2 classes performed their “Arcs of Joy,” a multi-colored playground demonstration, during the 87th Founding Anniversary at the SMU Oval last Dec. 8. Inspired by the various triumphal arcs of different countries, the presentation was named “Arcs of Joy” utilizing bamboo sticks formed into arc shapes coated with different colors of plastics. MAPEH department head Dr. Mary Grace Bulatao, also head of the demonstration, said that in spite of the limited preparations and the heavy rain, the 1,364 students triumphantly showcased their performance. “Overall, okay yung performance kahit limited [time] lang [ang preparations] kasi three weeks, unlike before, first semester pa lang nagpapractice na. Of course, with the cooperation of each and every one”, Bulatao said. Bulatao added that the playground demonstration speaks for their class

activities and defines what Physical Education really is. Meanwhile, most of the performers claimed that they enjoyed the performance despite the rain especially when they saw the people appreciate and smile with their presentation. “Noong nasa kalagitnaan na kami ng aming performance, doon na namin na-feel na parang wala lang yung ulan because of our wonderful and magnificent performance that made the people around us happy and impressed,” said performer Michael Gabriel, BSED1. Alongside the supervision of Bulatao were other P.E teachers, Ma’am Ronda Navalta, Mrs. Ofelia Macutay, Mr. Karl John Ordoñez, Mr. Jan Rudolph Patricio, Mr. Sherwin Marciano, and Mr. Dino Reyes. Accordingly, Mr. Allan Guiab was in-charge for the music. Better Late Than Never Due to the heavy down pour, performances of the Pre-school, Grade School and High school Marians were suspended during the same day following the decision of the administration. However,

the said performances were showcased on Dec. 11. The youngest in the university symbolized the little flame ignited by the CICM founder, Fr. Theopile Verbist as the preschoolers grooved into the music as they depicted the joy in the CICM mission through their cha-cha dance. Additionally, the grade school pupils presented their “Circles of Joy” with their balls and polka-dots props representing the joy and enthusiasm of every Marians with the multifaceted achievements of pupils in the fields of academics, sports and culture. Meanwhile, inspired by the founder’s love and passion for mission, high school students waved “Hearts of Joy” emblematizing the joy in celebrating the 87 years of mission & excellence. The performances of the elementary and high school department were led by Academic Coordinator Mr. Louie Burgos, and Mrs. Agnes Madamba, Coordinator of Students Activities.M

Through the exchange of intellectual arguments and persuasive speeches, Valiant Earth was able to best the Invincible Air during the championship round of the first interschool debate held during the University Week at the Sacred Heart Center, Dec. 9. Valiant Earth debaters Chantal Therese Tayaban, Mervin Jay Go, and Jeanne Alexandra Felipe on the opposition side were able to outdo Invincible Air’s Joel Espino, Louise Aldeim Burgos and Neome Czarina Valite with the motion “This house believes that elections be made mandatory” under the Asian Parliamentary debate format. According to Felipe, the debate was high-spirited since they were able to compete with one of the university’s debate team. “Actually when I found out who the debaters from Invincible Air were, I claimed na matatalo na agad [kami] kasi napakagaling nila plus everyone told me how great they are on the podium. It was an honor debating with them because they are one of the university’s best. It was a high spirited and dynamic debate,” she said. In addition, Felipe shared their preparations before going for the debate. “We did a lot of brainstorming, a lot of reading, a lot of sleepless nights browsing for other references, a lot of arguing and a lot of praying. Personally, before I go on to stage, I always make sure that I pray. I leave it all up to Him and do the best I can. Lagi kong sinasabi na ‘thy will be done Lord,’ because if God permits that I win, let it be a blessing. If not, let it be a learning experience,” she told. Meanwhile, Burgos said that the championship match, for her, was one of the highlights of the university

week. “It (the debate) was electrifying! For me, the championship match was one of the highlights during the university week since it is not just a battle of the brains, it is also a means to widen the views of everyone,” Burgos said. She also admitted that she got anxious of their team’s contenders and commended the other debaters. “Honestly, I feared our contenders (Valiant Earth) because I already knew them to be really competent. All of the other debaters were equally good. They all have various skills that make them debaters. They have persuasive skills, good communication skills, interpersonal skills, research abilities and many more,” Burgos added. The debate, which aims to allow students to be deeply aware of pertinent social issues and to showcase their argumentative skills, shall become an annual event but won’t be replacing the Fliptop competition, which is also an anticipated event, due to its differences when it comes to the formality of the events. “Since the university caters to the holistic development of learners, it is a good idea to include debate as one of the activities alongside the sports and cultural competitions. This also catered to harnessing the oral communication and public presentation of the participants,” said Mrs. Lysel Haloc, coach of the Marian Debate Society. Before the said championship round were the preliminary debates whereas the different teams battled against each other by means of the single elimination method. The said debate format is in preparation for the CICM Schools’ Friendship Meet debate. M

Search for Mr. and Miss SMU Campus Personality 2015

SoA clais hall of fame Ms. title; SHS wins Mr. title after 6 years By Rhowen Belisario

After their successful second bid for the crown as the campus personalities of their respective schools, Ms. Ambassador of Goodwill Reina Almira Cuyahon and Mr. Health Sciences Audie Labao took it up a notch as they claimed the title of Mr. and Ms. SMU Campus Personality 2016 at the Fr. Tonus Gymnasium, Dec. 11. Cuyahon first joined the Search for Mr. and Miss Ambassadors of Goodwill in 2014, where she placed first runner-up after reigning Ms. SMU Campus Personality Louise Aldeim Burgos. Labao, on the other hand, first attempted to win the Mr. Health Sciences title in 2013. For the past four consecutive years, the School of Accountancy (SoA) made a four-peat winning streak for the Ms. Campus Personality title, and with the win of Cuyahon, senior Accountancy student, SoA claims their hall of fame title in the said search. Cuyahon, when asked about bearing the pressure of the hall of fame, said that she

was very pressured by the lone idea of continuing the winning streak of her school but made it as a motivating factor to win the said pageant. “Pressure talaga. Pero ‘yun ang naging motivation ko. ‘Yun talaga iniisip ko. For four years, School of Accountancy na ang aming pamilya. This award is other way of expressing my sincerest gratitude. Mahal ko sila. At kung mahal mo, ibibigay mo lahat nang iyong makakaya, makita lamang silang masaya,” she said. Meanwhile, after a six-year drought for the Mr. Campus Personality crown of the School of Health Sciences, the title found its way back to the pharmacists, nurses and medical technologists as Labao claimed the title in his second attempt. Labao was very grateful and took pride in taking back the title after six years. “Nung in-announce na po yung title, di ako makapaniwala na ako yung nanalo kaya parang may halong kaba at saya. Hindi ko na alam ang susunod kong gagawin. Sobrang thankful that I made it this far”, Labao claimed. According to him, he didn’t expect to win the said pageant since all of the candidates have

strong and unique qualities to help them win the crown, and winning a title is just a bonus for all their efforts. “I didn’t expect to win in the said pageant because all of my fellow candidates have pleasant personalities. We all deserved the title and we are all winners, because joining and representing different schools of SMU is a big opportunity to showcase our personalities and to inspire. Winning the crown was only a bonus for us and as I said we are all winners,” he added. FINAL Q&A The final question they had to answer was, “If you have won, what is your most important personal social advocacy and what would be your concrete project for this advocacy in the soonest time possible and why?” Cuyahon answered that she wanted to be the bridge between the gap she saw among students and the faculty and staff of Saint Mary’s University, and that she wanted to be a campus personality who values good relationships with all kinds of people. “My advocacy is based on the problem that I see in Saint Mary’s

University. That is the gap that we have among the student[s], [and] the faculty and staff. As a campus personality, I will or I want to be a bridge to that gap. I want to connect to other people to socially interact with them. And with that, I know that I can inspire other people’s lives and I know that we can have or we can build good relationship with each other, and because I believe that what matters most in life is our relationship.” Labao answered that he would like to strengthen more and support the implementation of the Clean, Healthy, Safe, and Friendly program of the university since it helps a lot not only inside the school but also in the community. “We, Marians are known to be or for cleanliness and orderliness in our community. So, personally I want to advocate the CHSF [program] and innovate it. ” Placing first runner-up were both from the School of Business; Jethro Cyrus Gambito, BSBA MM 3 and Tricia Manalo, BSTM 3. Gambito answered that he wanted to help the poor and the jobless to uplift the economic capabilities of every Filipino.

“As we all know, Philippines is one of the poorest [countries in the world]. And as a business student and as a future businessman, I will promote MSME to every barangay and I will inspire them to put up business[es] of their own, because Philippines is a jobless country,” he said. Manalo, on the other hand, also answered with helping and reaching out to underprivileged people and she encouraged everyone to join and help her in a charity program. According to her, helping other people makes her happy. “My social advocacy is to help the poor or those people who are in need. Why? Because I would like my advocacy [to] always [be] in line with compassion and one concrete project that I will do is to campaign and encourage each and every one of you to join a campaign or a charity program that would definitely help the poor people, Why? Because helping poor or other people makes me happy,” she said. This year search is a sweet victory for SoA and SHS. For the next seach, will they retain their respective titles? M

TM reaps 17 awards in 15th LHEPC By Yumiko Angelius Yoshiy

After continuing their sixth overall winning streak in the regional level, The MARIAN (TM), the official student publication of Saint Mary’s University garnered 17 awards in the 15th Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference held at Hotel Felicidad, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, Feb. 4-6. For the individual awards, nine staff members represented Region 2 and were able to clinch seven awards earned by Milvin Manitchala, BSECE 4, for Comics Strip Drawing Filipino (1st place); Marc Ryan Brosas, BSCoE 4, for Layouting (2nd place); Chantal Therese Tayaban, BS-Psych/ ABGC 3, for Column Writing English (3rd place). Other winners were Den Mark Lorenzo, BSA 4, for Copyreading and Headline Writing Filipino (3rd place); Charles Arthemi Guarin, BSAr 4, for Comics Strip Drawing English (3rd place); Emmanuel Jose, AB-Journ 4, for Photojournalism Filipino (7th place); and Mark Jeremy Melad, AB-Journ 3, for Sports Writing Filipino (9th place). Other participants were Neome Czarina Valite, BSA 3, who joined DevCom Writing English and Naiomi Justereen Bangad, who joined Copyreading and Headline Writing English and Poetry Writing English. Bangad was also elected the regional representative in the

Board of Directors for the Luzonwide Association of College Editors. Meanwhile, for the group awards, five TM publications were able join in the roster and bagged a total of 10 awards. TM Newsletter (June – July 2015) landed fifth in Best Editorial Page, fifth in Best Layout, eighth in Best Sports Page and tenth in Best Features Page; TM Tabloid (August – September 2015) landed ninth in Best Sports Page and TM Broadsheet (November 2015) landed both sixth in Best News Page and Best Sports Page. Also, TM Magazine (October 2015) themed Tanikala landed eighth Best Theme and ninth Best Features and Literary Page. TM literary folio, Loose Ink X: Expressions, Inside and Out, landed in fourth Best Theme. Valite, news editor, said that the experience was overwhelming since the Vizcaya-based publication was able to reap awards at the national press conference. “I found the experience overwhelming. Although not all of us got awards, almost majority got one, so it offsets it. The awards just prove that our publication truly serves quality issues not only to the Marian community but also to those who have

received a copy of it,” Valite explained. Meanwhile, Jose, editor-in-chief, spoke of the pressure of being a contender in the LHEPC and shared his preparations as the head of the publication. “The fact na nakapunta ka sa LHEPC, it means that you need to step up your game. You have to be fully prepared, especially sa event ko na Photojournalism. The first thing I did was to familiarize myself around the complex to have at least an idea for the contest proper. Secondly, interviewing my subjects during shoot. The pressure is there. And to constantly motivate and support my staff, there is really a need for extra push.” More over, Lorenzo considers his win as sweet revenge after not being a qualifier to LHEPC for two years from his start of joining the regionals. “I am joining RHEPC for 3 years now and only this year that I was qualified for LHEPC. I am grateful for the blessing that at last I made it and more from that, I got an award. Despite the long time I waited, it is a ‘come back is real’ situation,” he said. M

that the tactical inspection being moved earlier from the usual second to third week of February to the aforementioned date, and having some inconveniences due to the gymnasium renovation in the first semester of the school year. “Ang preparations natin ay two Saturdays and two Sundays lang. Dati kasi ginanaganap ang RAATI tuwing middle of February, pero ngayon kasi e, middle of January. So ang preparations natin ay kakaunti talaga. Hindi tayo nagprepare ng first sem kasi may discussions pa na ginagawa. Okay din naman sa atin kasi ginagawa ang gym and there was no other venue na good for 300+ students, kaya ang ginagawa namin is two hours na lecture and two hours na field [practice] kaya nakapagprepare lang kami noong January,” he elaborated. But despite the short amount of preparation, the ROTC unit was still able to pull out a 99.3213 mark, the highest ever recorded score by the SMU-ROTC in all the years that they have been part of RAATI 2RCDG, which includes ROTC units from universities in the Cagayan Valley region and Cordillera Administrative Region. Marciano also cited that this achievement wouldn’t have been made possible if sacrifices weren’t made. “[First,] we sacrificed in terms of the mga classes namin. Second, we

sacrificed to go home late in the evening kasi kailangan talaga nila imemorize ‘yung pagkasunod ng gagawin nila kasi kapag nagkamali, minus na kaagad ‘yun. Minsan nga pinapauwi na kami ng guard,” he furthered. Even though the SMUROTC unit wasn’t able to make it to the Top 5, Marciano still believes that the SMU-ROTC sets the standards high for the other competitors. “Parang ang SMU ang nagseset ng standards sa lahat – in terms of uniform kasi parepareho lahat ng cadets, in terms of office kasi sa ROTC office, lahat ng gamit nila doon ay hindi hinihiram, doon pumunta ang fund ng ROTC, aside from RAATI,” he explained. Battling out with 21 competing units, the SMUROTC unit was still able to clinch awards in the Field Tests, namely: third runner-up in the M16 Riffle Field Stripping, first runner-up in First Aid, and three champions – one each for Map Reading, Caliber 45 Field Stripping, and Military Courtesy and Discipline. This year’s ROTC unit was led by Corps Commander C/ COL Jenny Joy Tindaan, 1CL, BS Tourism Management 3, who was also the recipient of the Best ROTC Female Cadet of the Year awarded last March 23 at the HPA Grandstand, Fort Bonifacio Metro Manila by the Armed Forces of the Philippines through His Excellency President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, who also awarded Corps Ex-O and S4 C/LTC Jestoni Kimpalong, 1CL, BS Criminology 3, as the Best ROTC Male Cadet of the Year. ith an aim to boost economic activities among local entrepreneurs in the province, the Nueva Vizcaya Livelihood and Pasalubong Center (NVLPC), a benefit-oriented building, officially opened for business on Jan. 20.

The NVLPS is a two-storey building which houses one restaurant, souvenir shops, processed-food products and gift shop at first floor. While three training rooms, food processing area, and the investments and promotions center, managed by the provincial cooperative affairs office, is housed at the second floor. Different organizational firms showcased their various products during the opening like Mid-East Sweet, Darapidap Auto Saving Group, MGSK, Willmarsha, and Kayapa Weavers. Others include furniture goods from Villa Colloma, LB Pascua, and Reylens. Moreso, ASAA Group and Malco also presented their products. And to ensure the quality of products sold in the center, a provincial product accreditation body was organized. Juditte Asuncion, NVLPC coordinator said the center was established to address the need of the Nueva Vizcaya Entrepreneurs Association (NVEA) for government infrastructure support and help will prepare micro small and medium enterprises (MSME) compete

with neighboring countries. “This center will assist and prepare them [MSME] for the ASEAN regional integration, an anticipated quality product competition among Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in our neighboring countries,” said Asuncion. Asuncion believed the establishment of the center will rise business atmosphere in the province and accelerate domestic and foreign investments. Accordingly, provincial governor Ruth Padilla said the NVLPC is a big contribution to a successful business and on the livelihood of the people because it is supported by local agencies and national government. “Dahil sa LTPC (Livelihood Training and Pasalubong Center), mabibigyan ng tama at wastong kaalaman ang mga aspiring entrepreneurs ng lalawigan upang mag-produce ng mga dekalidad na produkto at matulungan sa promotion at packaging ng kanilang mga produkto,” Padilla said. Padilla cited that the NVLPC will benefit Novo Vizcayanos with the free services offered by the of

ON ELECTRONIC VOTING Aside from the establishment of the SEC, the election innovated from

different livelihood development experts coming from government agencies. Among these offices are Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Labor and Employment, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Cooperative Development Authority, and the provincial government. ON

A POSITIVE NOTE Bishop Ramon Villena hoped that this project will benefit the small entrepreneurs especially the needy and will share the province’s products to the tourists. Meanwhile, Leana Bianca Camonayan, operation manager of NVLPC shared the benefits of establishing NVLPC in honing the skills of small entrepreneurs from different municipalities and groups of the province. “Yung mga livelihood na yan ng mga kababaihan ay nakakatulong para may pagkuhanan sila ng income. Ito na rin yung tulong ng government para sa mga unemployed kaya gumawa sila ng livelihood program na tinuturuan nila then ito yung bunga o mga products na nagawa nila,” she said.

ON NVLP’S STATUS AND IMPROVEMENT Camonayan also shared the current status of NVLPC in terms of improvements, and customers’ comments and suggestions. “Nasa period of development pa lang tayo. Siyempre naguumpisa pa lang at ilang buwan pa lang naman. Nasa dry run pa tayo pero ang maganda pa rin dito is may pumapasok ng income,” she said. Moreover, Camonayan said that improvement proposals were submitted to Padilla which includes the establishment of bus stop and gasoline pits in front of the NVLPC. “Hinihintay namin yung approval ni Governor Padilla sa mga proposals na mga sinubmit namin sa kanya. May balak kaming mga kainan sa harap para later on yung mga bus stop passengers afford nila yung mga foods and baka 24 hours open na. At siguro pag nagawa na yung gasolinahan, baka maging stop over na ito ng mga bus. Inaayos pa lahat kasi bago pa lang. Pero iyon talaga ang first na priority natin, mga bus companies.”

manual voting to electronic voting whereas five computer units were situated in the gymnasium. By then, votes were automatically counted making it easier to canvass votes with faster and more accurate delivery of results. Despite such innovation, the electronic voting had its own disadvantages. “I find the idea of having electronic elections good. Mas mabilis nang malaman yung results and accurate naman siya.

Although there are obviously some setbacks especially nung malapit na magclose ang votation. Matagal yung waiting time. I hope students will know who to vote before arriving at the area para hindi matagalan,” said Rojane Marinas, BSOA 1. Vernon Ged Manuel, BSA 3, said this year’s SCC Halalan gave the Marian community a breath of fresh air and made them hopeful of a better leadership for the next school year.

“Ang ganda lang kasi ang daming bagong offer ngayong elections and mas mabilis na yung process. Hindi na tatamarin ang students na bumoto at mas mabilis na malaman yung results. Sana nga, mas gumanda ang administration ngayon since mukhang maganda naman yung relationship ng mga nanalong officers sa isa’t isa,” he said. The turnover from outgoing to incoming officers will be held in June. M

One of the customers said that the NVLPC has a big contribution to the livelihood of the Novo Vizcayanos particularly from the women’s group. “Ang pinaka highlight para sa akin dito na benefit niya is nakapagbibigay siya ng kabuhayan sa mga kababayan natin, sa mga kababaihan, and through this, may natututunan pa sila, kumikita pa sila and napapaunlad din ang turismo natin,” *Mary said. Furthermore, the *Mary also mentioned the things that the operators of the establishment should develop. “Dahil malapit ako sa Pasalubong Center, nakikita ko yung improvements at performance nila through their operation in the previous months. So, ang masasabi ko lang, dapat yung mga produkto nila dapat afford ng lahat and i-continue nila ung pag-aadvertise ng Pasalubong Center para mas maging successful,” she added. Editor’s Note: When asked about the accumulated income of NVLPC, Camonayan refused to disclose the amount. *Mary not her real name.

In the world of academic studentry, as a student goes up another year, he/she is allowed to take up more advanced subjects, with each year serving as a preparation for the next one. Each year preparing us for challenges harder than the others. With each year serving as a reminder for the next, each year a symbolic representation. Our first year in college serves as the adjustment period. This is where students try to get a hold of our surroundings, that time where we try to get to adjust on so many new things. As the students adjust to new things, a university or institution must also do the different adjustments mandated by authorizing bodies. A mandate from an authorizing body should be taken seriously but there are other things that still need to be taken into account. A university is highly regarded if it can do so but without letting its educational system suffer. One must still remember that despite developments, nothing much must suffer. If a mandate is heavily enforced to be so, a university must take into account the welfare of the student body and itself – that a university is truly prepared for change. When second year comes, sophomores are usually not the new kids in the block but they’re not the schooling expert. They’re able to

memorize where is this and that, but they still do not know how the system works. Sophomores are filled with insurmountable uncertainty. A university also faces uncertainty. Year after year, a university is plagued with so much problems that they try so hard to create solutions in a single blow. From fluctuating tuition fees to overrated miscellaneous fees, there is a great uncertainty for both the students and the university. With not much in hand, an institution which tries so hard to look uncertain and denies the fact would eventually look more of it. It’d be rather more of a help if they’d admit they are in such a situation. And then the third year comes – the hardest year, so they say. This is the year when students are burdened with the sense of having so much academic work but they are also pressured by a university’s goal of preparing them socially by bombarding them with activities. In simple terms, an imbalance of academics and activities. With a university’s goals of intellectually honing them and at the same time preparing them to be social being, they eventually get lost in a storm of not being able to focus. The sad part of this is that sometimes universities pick on this adversity and even blame the students for not being able to deliver what are “idealistically”

expected to deliver. And now, the fourth and fifth years of our college year. The years where requirements rain like a torrential downpour. With so much requirements imposed by the university, students try to exhaust all means possible. Students have internships, last minute projects and the ever-famous, thesis/research paper, just to name a few. Universities tend to impose that something must only be done by someone within the gates or within the campus or vicinity. Students, with the drive to finish on time, flock, thus causing delay not only to themselves and each other but to the whole system itself. With a floating question in mind, is it they safe to say that a university is underequipped or so – that a university cannot keep up with the demand of such a supply. With so much in hands for the student body, students still try to finish what can be finished within a timespan. When problems pile up on top of each other, it causes a time lock – a hindrance that takes a specific time to be solved. With problems that tend to arise as years pass by, the student body is burdened by the idealistic reality that they are nearing the day where they call themselves a graduate in four or five years. Or not. M

OPINION The MARIAN

December 2015 - March 2016

Ever heard of the journalism joke that says “the life of a journalist ends at 30?” If yes, you’re a campus press baby. If not, then you might as well continue reading this. For us to be in the same boat, 30, in most journalism textbooks I have read, refers to a copy reading or proofreading symbol that signals the end of every story. Wittingly, it was in this sense why and how our journalism foregoers deemed 30 to be the demise of every journalist. If you ask me if I already experienced this kind of ‘dying’ moment, it was when I enrolled journalism and the brashness of these critiques and lords started plaguing my burning passion as soon as I attended the four-year course. Who wouldn’t after hearing comments like, “Journalism? Nako, nakakatakot baka ma-massacre ka. Wala na ngang pera diyan, papatayin ka pa nila. ” I anguished over their dewy judgment because they failed to recognize the big role every journalist play in our croaking society. It’s not just about money, people. Success should never be equated with riches. Because just as any other profit-earning line of

of the press or the so-called fourth estate. The next thing I know, when someone ask me on my profession, confidently and with conviction, I say “Journalism po” and everything else seemed to follow. Need not to mention their respect and value for my future endeavors. I was convinced to continue the path I knew that I am going to shine and perform at my best. As I finish my four-year degree in Journalism, greater opportunities and greener pastures await outside the portals of my alma mater as I step into a new dimension where complete disarray and harsher words are to be accustomed and counted usual. And at long last, equipped with all the prudent and practical knowledge on media ethics, press rights, and mass communication theories I learned in the academe, I am one step closer in the realization of my dream to performing one as the new breed of young journalists

Who wouldn’t after hearing comments like, “Journalism? Nako, nakakatakot baka ma-massacre ka. Wala na ngang pera diyan, papatayin ka pa nila.

work, journalism is essential – a self-sacrificing job. Come to think of it, what would the world be without the dedicated and passionate journalists and media people working over news coverage in agencies, police stations, crime scenes, buy-bust operations, calamities, oil price hike, and others, just to give up-tothe-minute information and update of the biggest and freshest news of the day? At some point whenever someone ask me my chosen profession, instead of saying “Journalism,” I would say other courses like Accountancy and the like, enough to rescue myself and get into a saving grace moment. I feel sorry for myself for not telling the truth. Up until I realized that journalism is my calling. This is what I want and this is what I want to do. I pierced into this kind of world and realized the very nature of my chosen career – to safeguard and perform the watchdog function

in the media industry. Well, at this time, I have come to this point when I would have to write 30 for the last time – as my finale in the pages of The MARIAN. It may seem to be the end, but every end is just the beginning so they say. But just as I finally get my hands off with these clean sheets of paper and my mighty pen, I wish to thank everyone who helped me journey this meaningful and wonderful college trip. Thank you for inspiring me to do well and for constantly reminding me to stand firm against all battles. To my family, especially mama and papa, friends, teachers, TM family, and to my advisers, maraming salamat! Definitely, this is not going to be my last for the real world will soon open its doors for me to continue witnessing, writing, and fighting for the truth. Instead of choosing between writing 30 and not, I am choosing to end this with only three words, “...to be continued.” M

SO YOU MEAN, DEMAND?

Demand if it is virtually certain, or reasonably probable, perhaps. People need to attend to their living requirements. Whatever walls may abruptly and unnoticeably stand before them, their perseverance to pursue their goal will break those walls and stand for their objectives. Well, that’s the true life, just so you know. I do experienced breakdowns and stress which at some point in time, I just wanted to end up life. But such thinking is just for the weak. We are not contraption, neither a machine that works the whole time and never stops until it gets overheat. We are ordinary creatures, too. Like you, if it is so. As I see the struggle of everyone, it makes me sad because authorities demand things that they knew, there is a not-that-high probability to culminate such. But because they are the authority, we cannot do anything except to cheer up ourselves and do what we are told to do so. It is just an unfair act. Yes, they told us what to do, and in follow up, they even gave us the early target. Really? An early one. Okay. So the story had just began. The limit was set. No one could ever change it. And there you go, nothing to say but to start working on it. Perhaps, let’s think of it. Can I beat the target? Yes, perhaps. I think I have the skill and the ability, I am in confidence with such. But could For the past two semesters of my junior year, I never imagined that it would be this stressful and mind boggling. There were the daily 7:30 classes in the morning till late 6:30 in the evening. Endless pre-test, recitations, seat works and quizzes. Daily reports and activities for some minor subjects which were branded as “pa-major”. More and more required readings of thy hollowed accounting and business related books. Organizing seminars and liquidating daily expenses of the organization and of course I would never fail to mention the sleepless overnights and sleepovers at different boarding houses and apartments around the campus deemed worthy of our presence just to finish each and every issue, which and if I may say so myself, outputs that are actually made from pure blood and sweat, and mountain dews and Kopiko 78 degrees and also eye bags. After trying to fulfill and juggle all these responsibilities and duties like a real super human being with energy drinks as a source of super powers, we grew up tired, uninspired and sometimes losing the primary reason why we’re still pushing through. Sometimes, we can’t grasp anymore the primary reason why we live in such a manner of life and that everything was just the cost of being an adult. All the responsibilities and duties we need to fulfill are all the burden of coming up to this age we actually dream of reaching when we were still child and

they also think if they are able, too. I mean, do they have the gears and riggings to help me achieve what they want me to do them? Maybe, it is in doubt. This is the problem with the society where we earn living. The high positions tend to overrule the lower ones, well, it is as what practiced, but demanding from

“ people don’t have the same skills, neither brains to rationalize that they can do same things that others can.

They can turn an ordinary one into an excellent one. They can even turn people into machines, working full-time. I really don’t know how they can afford to torture their regulars, well in fact, they are the one reason why they are earning high compensations. They blame us for doing unjust and policybreaking individuals. We don’t because in the first place, they did. They want us beat the target, we just made a remedy, but then we are still wrong. How could they be unfair as this? Their way of thinking of our abilities is that high. People don’t have the same skills neither brains to rationalize that they can do same things that others can. Let’s get rid of thata thing. Let us just focus on what should be the best remedy to aid those who overpowered their positions. In such a way, maybe we

the lower ones an impossible thing is not that right anymore. Well, demand if it is possible or maybe probable. People ask from their associates things to be done early. If I am the associate, I will do, given with that higher position must take into their consideration also that I still have other things in line to do. And that such should have sufficient power (safer to say, in an office, ‘manpower’) to help me fulfill what he had requested me. They are great demanders, aren’t they?

can help. People needs attention. Admit it, we are in demand for some things. But well, only in economics that we have this term ‘ceteris paribus.’ Other things were held constant, which in the practical life, we don’t do such, because it is not life when there are no changes, it is not such if there are some outside forces preventing one to continue the journey. It is not what you continue to page 11

cost of adulthood

innocent. There were the days when I woke up in the morning with that big question of entering the class or not anymore since I can’t find a little glim of hope of passing the course and making it through the retention. There were the days when we were walking by the corridor in a zombie mode with only cobras, mountain dews and coffees running though our blood veins. There were actually times that we want to give up but we most certainly did not end up doing so for the people that are hoping and supporting us from the start of all the fights we have been through. And so for the time being, the universe just got the right thing for my miseries and let me take a three day break from the noise of the academe. A break from all the papers, books, calculators and articles; a break I needed to stop further breaking. I have all the luxury of time to go home and visit my family whom I think has already excluded me from our family tree since I only got to see them once in

a while, missing all the family affairs. But it was not a vacation leave or a break I fell into. I ended up assisting my sister fixing her classroom destroyed by a typhoon which according to her, a regular visitor in the place where she teach. It wasn’t the work that made me tired and exhausted but rather the travel going in to that place. It was from a far flung town of our province. I stayed there for two days and surprisingly I survived in a place where there is no current and signal at all. The only source of water is from a nearby river which according to the people there was very near, however, we walked kilometers away to fetch the very precious water. Life wasn’t that nice on that part of the world but it is as good as it could get for the people living there. I was exhausted by the early evening at 6 pm where everything was dark and dim while bed time was set at 8 after dinner since there’s nothing else to continue to page 11

While I was writing this column, I was in the hype of watching ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder – borderline into addiction, to say so. If there is anything that I learned while watching the series, which would be justice isn’t brought to the table but justice is created. Professor Annalise Keating’s thought of justice was justice isn’t justice until you serve it yourself. In my three years of stay in college, I may say I have or we have (with my classmates) been so “luckily” plagued with so much issues and controversies. About injustices, specifically. In this last column of mine in trying to undermine society’s cancer, I’m

to really understand something or to actually read notes. I can testify to the fact that sometimes, I, as a student, get lazy in reading my notes. But, calling someone “stupid” because he/she failed a test won’t do any good. Even if it is just a joke. I mean, there could

principle that only works for him/ herself. We’ve been to a point in our lives when we have been called out bad for something they claim to be. Even if a person has the authority to do so, it doesn’t give him/her the right to put biased personal judgment to call a person out. A simple chair-budge can never be called cheating without substantial evidence. Maybe a person was just fixing his/her seat or fixing his/ her pants or shirt while taking an exam. We all have that “personal perspective” that creates our “personal judgment” but that doesn’t deter that we can falsely accuse a person of something because that is what we think it is. We’ve been there finally to a point where we were nearly deprived of what we were supposed to know. We needed to even somewhat protest just to be able to know. There are things that we, as students and as people, have the right to know, most especially when it concerns us and our academics. Others may say that we just have to say yes or just abide by it but I do think in one way or another, we deserve some clarifications or an explanation to why such. Everybody has been to a point where we all felt stumped by the bigger things, that we get caught in the tide of what is happening around us. These are just some familiar situations that we get to experience, the world is big, and so are the world’s mischiefs. When things are getting out of control or things seem to daze out of normality, speak up and be heard. Sometimes, there are internal arguments that hinder us from speaking up, making us afraid that we’d look bad or we’d look too overreacting. Nobody knows that maybe you, speaking up will create a radical change in society’s norms. In the bigger retrospect, it’ll never be wrong to speak up or voice out things, just be sure that you’re in the right place and you’re not stepping on someone’s rights. M

December 2015 - March 2016

MR. LITERARY EDITOR

Hi there it’s me your literary editor. It’s been years since I got my space on this most privileged school publication and write about the rants and whatnot coming from my not so intelligent but creative mind. (coughs) Looking over my space, a part from my that red guy you could date for april fools day is the title of my column--Pick of the litter. Through this space I was given freedom to have my opinion in words and let others

judge me of my dispositions. Quite frankly I’m not that good. But anyways through training and complete concentration I did published a few. For years it has been a struggle to cast a few but amazing literary pieces such to satisfy the demands for your poetical hunger. I know I have my flaws which I honestly and bravely admit. From writing and gathering poems that are prone to questions, to publishing them even though

It’s the election season once again. This time, it isn’t any ordinary elections, it’s the election we’ve waited for six years – the Presidential elections. Like any ordinary day of topics trending on Facebook, posts and comments about those who are running in the position are almost everywhere. No matter how hard I want to see it as an indication that people on social media care, I can’t because these supporters just end up becoming keyboard warriors of some endless online clash. Thus the reason I just seldom read any politically inclined post and at the same time loathe the gift of free data. It is like getting pissed off of a tricycle driver who keeps on calling on you for a ride although you didn’t even ask for him in the first place. One boring day, when I just randomly decided to go for a try to read some comments in a post about one of the presidential candidates, I wished that I shouldn’t have gone to the comments section. With that brief five minutes of scrolling

do, nothing else to keep us busy. No current, no signal no internet/ With all the kilometric walking into the river and the farming and hunting as the only type of living they used to do, I realized things that the idea living in such type of community and living a busy life on the academe, wasn’t that far enough. Every day, we are faced by many challenges in life that we, most of the time complain and whine first before we even try to start the job failing to realize how fortunate we are on the life that we have. The kind of life up on that mountain was very simple but quite hard while our life here in the rural

through the comments, all I ever learned were the following: 1. Filipinos are really good in formulating conspiracy theories. From the infamous issue on who really killed Ninoy Aquino to the so-called “Plan B” of the Liberal Party, netizens did their best to make these unproven stories sound like they have been in the situation themselves. News websites like Rappler, GMANews, ABS-CBN News, and etc. were biased and Adobo Chronicles, Pinoy Vines, and other satirical websites became the credible sources. With that kind of story making skill of these people, GMA, ABS-CBN or TV5 doesn’t have to hire and pay much for scriptwriters for soap operas because netizens already have the plot twists covered. 2. Commenting in English automatically makes you an “intelligent” individual. Puhlease. Mere mastery of the English language doesn’t make you sound more superior than others especially if your arguments are off-tangent. Mag-tagalog na lang po kayo. 3. Memas everywhere. “Mema” or “MEMAsabi lang”

metaphor has sometimes confused some. I guess sometimes people might think that I’m weird in my works and consider me a bit “off-taste” in literature. In fact, I really am. I shoot stars to make stories. I catch fireflies and let them burst into myriads of light. And draw the earth’s noise and transform it into a beautiful symphony. All because I’m simply creative. I dont’ let people judge my work just because they can’t understand it. Screw them for all I care, because ‘true imagination’ by far has never been understood. It’s somehow abstract, and that’s the beauty of it. Work your brains a bit and learn to imagine and interpret things in your own creative way. Try it sometimes, trust me it works. I know we don’t usually talk or see each other around the campus but let me say, “Thank you”. Yes,

really I mean it. Allow me to first give my deepest and warmest gratitude to you dear ‘awesome’ Marians for once again supporting my last edition of Loose Ink 10: Expressions. Not a single credit owned for it’s you who made it possible. And yeah it placed an award Luzonwide. *Cheers!* It’s tough to say goodbye but as reality deems it, my turn is over and and its time to leave my pen and paper for a while, (which I obviously don’t, because I’m using my laptop all the time), and eventually you shall have another brilliant Shakespeare serving you best of The Marian Literary Menu. I just hope and pray that many of you shall and still take part by submitting your literary pieces, which would be a lot of help towards our dear publication. To those who read much of my works, (if you knew any) thank you

posts are what seemed like the biggest downside of free data. Just because they know they can have free facebook anytime of the day, they assume to have been given the right to say whatever they can say that doesn’t have a connection with the article at all just because #FreedomOfSpeech. Sorry, but you’ve mistaken stupidity with an invaluable right that is to be treasured while it exists. 4. Trashtalking and hating on others seemed to be on trend, too. Yeah, it is your account so you can do whatever you want with it, but language, please. Observe proper netiquette. Not because they can’t virtually hit you with their fist doesn’t mean you can just throw around some profanity and shame them. The last time I checked, we’re human beings, not some trash bin that will catch all those trashtalking coming from your keyboard. Never have I ever been disgusted of the lack of netiquette among Filipino netizens until now. Sure, everybody had their two cents about the issue, but they should have processed it well before pressing the “post” button. Cliché as it may sound, but think before you click. If I were to keep scrolling for the next 10 minutes, I reckon I’d be one of these people who obviously got eaten by the system. Boredom kills. Instead of proliferating negativity in social media, go out and get a life because the Philippines would actually need that. M

area is much complicated yet easy. It all boiled down to its common denominator. No matter how simple or hard, easy or complicated life could be, it is always on how we finish the task and work given to us. Fetching water away from a kilometric distance of a river might be hard but learning accounting and solving problems is also kind of a hard thing. Everything is a task and responsibility given to us every day, and no matter how big or small it is or, how easy and complicated it might be, it always put us on a common ground of doing the task and finishing it through the best way we can. Thank you for lending a shoulder to lean on, a hankie for tears, and much to my surprise roller skates. As for my corny jokes, I guess I was successful enough to inflict some staff. Anyhow, may the force be with you. To our advisers Sir John Tayaban and Dr. Clara Gonzales for their never-ending support towards my endeavors, thank you so much. I am now officially an archive. To those who have queries or what not towards my works (if there’s any of you), then drop by my Facebook chatbox and I’ll chat you back. So yeah, once again this is Mr. Brent Jericko P. matter what our task might be, it is always up to us and not to anybody else to finish the job. I decided to come back and finish the job and responsibilities I have yet to accomplish. This year was a tough ride and that maybe I was consumed about plans that never worked out than things and blessings that came out surprisingly. Hardships and sacrifices can be hold for longer period of time but there were just the times that no matter what you do, you just end up on the results that we never planned and expected. However these experiences are fulfilling and liberating.M

Miss Universe:

PIA’S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

F

by Chantal Therese Tayaban

rom the cold of December to the sweltering heat of the summer sun, the effect of the crowning of the Miss Universe-Philippines 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach at the Miss Universe 2015 pageant is still bringing tidal waves of pride and euphoria to her fans across the globe, especially the Filipino people. Despite the chaos and tension caused by the upcoming Presidential elections, the Filipinos still come together as one for three B’s: basketball, boxing, and beauty pageants according to the beauty queen. With a culinary degree under her belt from the Center of Asian Culinary Studies and a life journey that is now an inspiration to millions of people around the globe, let’s beat the heat with the 26-year old beauty queen as she teaches us how to make one of the Filipino favorites for this time of year—halo-halo. To create this summer favorite, all the ingredients have to be put on top of one another in a bowl or large cup.

FRUITS

At the bottom of the container lies the main ingredients of the halohalo — the fruits. It differs depending on the maker but it usually includes chopped banana boiled in a sugar syrup, strips of jackfruit and melon, shavings of coconut meat, cubes of sweet potato and any other fruit one would think would taste good with the other constituents. In Pia’s story, a huge chunk of her success came from her persistence to have the crown. It took her three tries at Binibining Pilipinas pageant before she got what she trained for all these years. She was first-runner up to Ariella Arida in 2013, got into top 15 and failed to place in 2014 where Mary Jean Lastimosa won, though despite last year’s devastating loss, she strived harder and earned the Miss UniversePhilippines crown in 2015.

SUGAR

To add sweetness to the mix, a few spoonful of sugar is added, and to the Filipino palette – the sweeter the better. This ingredient is an individual’s personality and Pia has showed so much of hers throughout her journey. Through her social media accounts and interviews, the Filipino-German actress isn’t shy to showcase her true self. She has always been proud to say she is a gamer at heart, has a self-acclaimed sense of humor and she loves appreciating people and does it with wit and grace.

SHAVED ICE

The reason why this treat is such a favorite for this season is that it is both refreshing and cooling because of the shaved ice that makes the body of this dessert. Pia’s hard work makes up the body of her journey to being the Queen of the World—the Universe, rather. She grew up with an unemployed single mom and a little sister – the reason while she became the breadwinner of the family by balancing her academics and working as an actress for small roles in showbiz. It was hard work paired with persistence that kept her striving to reach the goal she set for herself.

EVAPORATED MILK

This is an ingredient that shouldn’t be missed when making this sweet treat. It does not only elevate the taste but it also makes the texture creamy and overall it adds to the ‘yumminess factor’ that Filipinos love. To Pia, selfconfidence is something she exudes and is needed in the making of not only a Miss Universe but any successful person. And despite all her blessings, this Cagayan de Oro local has kept herself thankful and her feet still on the ground.

TOPPINGS

No halo-halo can go without either leche flan or ube (purple yam) and some even contain both! The toppings vary greatly depending on the maker but the toppings of Pia’s success story is her compassion. She has been open about her advocacies on HIV/AIDS and educating people especially the LGBT community. The importance of compassion to her can also be clearly seen in the closing statement in the Question and Answer portion of the pageant, where she really proved that she truly is “confidently beautiful with a heart.”

The last and final step in every great halo-halo recipe is when the ingredients are finally mixed together ready to be devoured by the world, just like the reigning Miss Universe who is ready to show the world her own mix of the ingredients that formed her success. M

OVERCOMING SOCIETY’S

JUDGMENT

Y

by Stacy Lee Nicole Ortiguero

ou’re in front of that mirror again – and that’s what you do every single day. You stare at your reflection, wondering – silently asking yourself when will you be the person that everybody wants you to be. You always ask yourself why you don’t have the prettiest face or the Victoria’s Secret physique among the bunch. You ask yourself all these to a point where you learn to not love yourself and believe that you are never important. With what your environment is trying to feed you, you eventually teach yourself to learn to listen to every little thing that society tells you, that every single good or bad thing people tell you, you let that get into your head. All those eventually make you anxious and fearful of everyone’s judgment and expectations. The hardest part of all these is that you try so hard to meet everyone’s judgment and expectations with your own personal happiness. Eventually, you find that is hard to make that happen that you just try to put yourself in a lucid state of thinking and doubting your capabilities and might as well, yourself. But the universe never fails to amaze everyone. No matter what we are facing in life, the universe always has that way of helping us – in one way or another. It may seem as hard to overcome all these but with the help of music you can. Yes, music.

JUST THE WAY YOU ARE

SHAKE IT OFF Shake off all the negativities, what others think about you is not important. It’s how you see yourself that matters. If others tell you that you can’t be a ramp queen model then put on those high heels and strut your way to school! Just make sure that you don’t break school rules. If people tell you that you can’t be successful in life, then study hard and work hard until the day comes when you can prove them all wrong. The point is that you should never let other people’s words defeat you. And remember, a dog barks to people they do not know.

WORTH IT

One of the most important to remember is that our physical body ages no matter what – just like any other. Never be afraid to show your personality because that’s what creates your identity, that’s what makes a person unique. Always remember that God made everyone in His own image and that He loves you unconditionally. And if you know that God loves you that much, then what others have to say is never important. Don’t try to change what God has given you, be contented and realize that God made you with a purpose. Because He made you amazing just the way you are.

TRY

Yes baby, you’re worth it! Stop neglecting your own feelings and interests. Giving yourself time and saying no to others every once in a while is not selfishness. You have your own life to start with, you are not here to exhaust yourself for others. Take care of yourself too. Pursue your interests and hop on to adventures of your choice. You got to live for yourself too because you’re worth it.

You don’t have to run an extra mile, put your make up on and wear fancy clothes so that people can like or accept you. “You don’t have to try so hard and you don’t have to give it all away.” Don’t sacrifice yourself for people who doesn’t see your heart’s beauty. You never ever change yourself just so that you can fit in because others said so or because you just want people to accept you.

LOVE YOURSELF This isn’t about Justin Bieber’s song though. As the words imply, love yourself. One of the saddest things a person can do is hate himself/herself. This happens when you feel like you don’t belong and that something is wrong with you. But most of the times you don’t realize that you are just with the wrong people and what you need to do is to be with the people who love you for who you are. If you feel loved and feel belongingness, self-love follows. Surround yourself with people who you know loves you. After you find the feeling of love and belongingness, you’d then find that epiphany of self-love.

Love yourself because you are wonderful and unique. You don't have to fit in, you can stand out. Be proud of yourself because you are a creation of God. Surround yourself with the right people and always remember that you are perfect one way or another. M

Literary attempts

Lahat nakangiting bumati at ako’y kanilang kinamayan. “I’m sorry to inform you Mr. Reyes but you won’t be able to graduate this year.”

“Meet me at this place and at this time. “By the power vested in me. I now pronounce you, graduates of batch 2016.” Toga ba o prinsipyo?

The days when we were little The times we used to play and giggle Each day I counted Ten dreadful months I waited and waited Holding my rants Every time we met, you took me to places You want me to meet all the unfamiliar faces And I got to eat any flavor of ice cream Then went to beaches for a walk or a swim I really love to be with you The memories we had, you loved them too I thought it’s gonna be like this forever To be so young and free as ever Days have passed, I met College I didn’t know it was a fixed marriage College is really cruel, stressing me a lot Threatening to hurt you if I won’t stop being a brat

So I learned to despise you, not miss you one day College made me do this, to distance away He replaced you, and I don’t want summer anymore No more fun, no more freedom, No more... No more...

Fire, muling naghari sa Sepak Takraw kontra Metals, 3-1 Ni Reynaldo Coloma Jr.

Earth namayagpag sa taekwondo

By Rhowen Belisario

Wala po talaga akong training at practice kasi first time kong sumali ngayon kasi bigla nalang ako sinali.

Samantala, itinanghal namang second runner-up ang Valiant Earth.M

NAKAPUSTANG BUHAY

THE SELECTION “Many have come, but few are chosen.” This familiar adage applies to almost everything. May it be for an application to a club, auditions for performing groups or in the selection of athletes for sport events. And it is apparent that in choosing, qualifications and requirements are served to aspirants, to test them and to know who truly deserve to be admitted. But, how well are they chosen? Given the big population of students in this university, it is lame to think that we don’t have a good number of athletes. To say that only a few possess the guts, spirit and talent is absurd. And yet we see the same faces and names whenever our school has sports events. The same names are called out by the announcers, the same people we cheer for. Well, perhaps they are the chosen ones. Given that they have already proven their abililities, it is just to give them the honor to be hailed as the varsitarians of our school. However, them being in the limelight cast other athletes in the shadows. Potential and eager athletes become unnoticed because they are new. The coordinators stay in tradition of picking out those who already have made a mark. This is a good strategy, to enrich your strengths and resources. But, what about exploring new resources and merging them with the current assets? It is always a question for a coordinator to ask if an athlete has the capabilities. And of course, the powerful athletes stand out. And newbies do not have much recognition. How to settle

this? Empowerment. It would be amazing to see athletes helping, building, and motivating each other to form a mutual strength. A strength that is one. This way, everyone moves forward and nobody is left behind, giving chance to every single athlete to get a boost and perform with much accuracy and competitiveness. One thing that makes sports special is the camaraderie that is built by the athletes. Camaraderie that brings athletes in unity, creating connections, friendship and power. And how are you supposed to achieve such if it is always the same people who mingle with each other? The point is that it might be a good idea to also develop new athletes and collide them with the others. New players, new lessons, new perceptions. Definitely not a bad foundation for camaraderie. This gives everyone a fresh new environment. Besides, varsitarians won’t stay forever, they’ll graduate soon enough. And if they do, without any other trained athletes to take their place, the university’s games might get a little shabby. We wouldn’t want that, don’t we? Welcoming new athletes, means welcoming new people - people who might have different environment before, different principles in sports. But there is an implied strength in that. Individual differences that can give lessons to everyone. And instead of culture shock, there will be diversity of ideas pertaining to sports. Opening doors to more effective and potential athletes will bring us into an era of empowered, powerful and victorious athletes. M

Maingay at makalat kami.

Time management. M

Water, Air still Beach Volleyball champs By Lexter Rodriguez

Defending champion Unexpendable Water and Invincible Air repelled rivals and capped off their third consecutive championship in the Beach Volleyball men and women tournament, SMU Mini Forest, Dec. 11. Water and Air earned their tickets in the championship game after having a straight set win in the elimination rounds, gaining both a twice-to-beat advantage. Mark Ceasar Cudiamat and Jayson Oliveros with Ian Christopher Rivera of Water were unstoppable with their well placing and defense, putting an end in the first set, 21-17. Water started the second set with a one point lead, 4-3, but they were drained at the end of the set and committed consecutive service errors, which made Earth gained a one point lead, 17-18, winning the set, 18-21. The combination of Jann Graceal Bert Binlayan, Stephen Christian Coma, with Roy Anggaban Jr. continued their attack streaks as they took

over the third set, 17-21, and totally slayed the twice-to-beat advantage of Water. Earth maintained their momentum in the first set of their do-or-die match, allowing only Water to have a score gap of not less than three points, 2-5, 5-9, ending the set, 17-21. Determined to seize gold, Cudiamat marked the second set with relentless services and changed their strategy with tricky placings, which Earth was unable to dig, concluding the set with a score of 21-17 and moving to a decision set. At the middle of the decision set, Water rose steadily to tie with Earth, 14-14, but Water flooded Earth as they scored a three point lead, 19-16, with Oliveros finishing the game with a powerful spike, 21-17, declaring the Water as the champion in the Beach Volleyball Men. Oliveros of Water shared that they were pressured with Earth’s aggressiveness during the decision set and admitted that they still wanted to retain the championship title, although

they lost their twice-to-beat advantage. “Siyempre first time namin maglaro ng beach volleyball kaya sobrang pressured kami sa kanila, pero kahit natalo kami sa game one, hindi kami nawalan ng pagasa, kundi ginawa namin yung best namin para maipanalo yung gold,” Oliveros said. Oliveros furthered that aside from their training with volleyball in the school, their good teamwork plus faith played very well in all their games. Meanwhile, Invincible Air was consistent in Beach Volleyball Women and did not allow Incredible Metals to gain hope for a rematch. During the first set, Metals outscored Air as they gained a two point lead, 13-15, but Air was firm on handing defeat to Metals, taking back a three point lead, 19-16, as Charlene Kate Gomez, Margielyn Grospe with Maria Luiza Mayo, released persistent set ups, triumphing the set with a score of 21-17. Metals remained calm and

ambitious to defeat Air in the second set, but their hope to have a decision set was blew out and totally lost, 21-14. Asked about their winning strategy, Mayo claimed that their height was a great help in their play and their teamwork in outsmarting the other teams was one thing that made them clinched the gold in the championship game. “Siguro yung isang advantage namin bukod sa may teamwork kami sa paglalaro at medyo may mga height kami, pautakan lang. Likod likod lang kung saan walang nakabantay,” Mayo said. In response, the coach of Incredible Metals admitted that their players lacked coordination in their final match. “One thing na kulang sa mga players namin ay yung coordination nila, yung pag-uusap kung anong mga strategy nila, one more thing kaya natalo kami ay pagod na rin sila kasi may previous game pa sila before the match,’” he said. Incredible Metals and Water both grabbed bronze in the men and women tournament, respectively.M

Air batters tie with 3-year champ Metals By Rhenzyl de Guzman

Three-year defending champion Incredible Metals tied with Invincible Air in the fiveinning championship match in softball league after finding out that one of Metals’ player was also a badminton player which led Air to a protest after a defeat scoring 1125 and resolved as both champions on Dec. 10, diamond field. Metal batters with two wins and no loss first defeated the Invincible Air in the first game homing 9-14.

The day after, in the second game, Metals once again claimed victory in the close fight with the Valiant Earth scoring seven against Earth’s six homes advancing them as the waiting for the championship. Earth after their loss recovered and gained their first victory against the Unexpendable Water homing 4-13 in the third game. Water was eliminated in the game after having their second loss against the Invincible Air in the fourth

game placing them fourth and Raging Fire fifth via default. Air and Earth both having one win clashed in game five for the semi-finals. Air managed to home nine against Earth’s seven homes advancing them to the finals with the Metals eventually placing Earth to the third spot. Moreover, Metals’ defense on the issue of having a badminton player in their team was that they were not aware of the new rule that badminton was considered

as a ball game and a major event since in the previous intramurals, badminton was considered a minor event. They also questioned the Air for not complaining before the championship game started. According to the side of Air, they were not aware that one of their opponents in Metals is a badminton player until an Air’s taekwondo player, who was watching the game, told them. Hence, the softball officials resolved the conflict by making Metals and Air as both champions. M

Earth tops in athletics by Gwenn Edphine Naui

The track of SMU was showered with sweat and effort as athletes of Valiant Earth lead the race for gold in the athletic events of this year’s University Week last December 10 and 11. Earth started strong as runner, Cromwel Calma, wins the 100m run for males while Air’s runner Abigail Punghan wins her team’s first gold for the Female Category. Team Earth continued to dominate the tracks as 400m and 800m runner as Jimmy Binnang wins both for the team. Binnang also topped the endurance test for the 1500m and 3000m runs after outrunning competitors in both categories. Earth’s female runner Angela Mendoza also won the gold in the 1500m run. Earth was still declared fastest as their chosen four, Joseph Batac, Cromwel Calma, Mack Jay Desamito and Christian Harrold Bibas, finished the 4x100m relay. However, the desired perfect record for Earth’s male runners was impaired by wins from Air’s Rommel Senica in the 200m sprint and Water’s foursome, Michael Padduyao, Jeremiah Gosep, Kurt Ruzzel Francia and Zoren Paraiso, in the 4x400 m relay. Air’s dominance in the female category went on as Punghan won again for the 200 m and 400 m sprint. Punghan also lead Air in winning the 4x100m relay alongside Ginaflor Biete, Caren Domalili and Febie Marantal with 1.07 minutes against Earth’s 1.08 minutes. Battling against dominant Team Air in the Female Category, Earth runner Sharyl Wanden managed to win gold for Earth in the 800 m sprint while Wanden, Daniele Galeon, Merryl Mahinan, and Grethel Mejia in the 4x400 m relay avenged their loss in the male category by bagging the gold. Earth’s male, Roy Anggaban and Metal’s female, Jonalyn Agaya showed their strength as they topped the first throwing event, shot put. The discus throw was won by male thrower Robert Soliman for Earth and Punghan for Air despite the darkness that surrounds the competitors while the showdown was held. Binnang also wins a throwing event for Earth for landing first place in Javelin Throw for male while Water’s Anjelika Bautista bagged her team’s gold. In the jumping events, Earth’s Bibas and Air’s Punghan never failed their teams as both were crowned as champions for the high jump competition for the fourth consecutive year. Bibas’ jumping records, however, edged Punghan’s for also winning his fourth for long jump while the latter failed because of fouls called and was dethroned by Earth’s Mejia. Bibas shared that his key in winning games is to not compare yourself to your competitors. He said: “you must only focus on yourself— in improving your strengths. And always offer your victories for the team and the university.” M

WATER DEFENDS TITLE-STEAL FROM METALS IN CHEERDANCE COMPETITION Creatively interpreting the different Philippine festivals, Unexpendable Water’s Panagbenga Festival-inspired routine flourished and propelled them to once again bring home the title in this year’s Cheerdance Competition at the University Oval, Dec. 10. SMU SIGLA-FEA shooters regain game over USLT-FEA dribblers By Mary Joy Agbanlog

“They started good, we started weak.” These are the words of Engr. Ronald Villaverde, coach of USLTFEA (University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao- Faculty and Employees Association) after losing the game with the SMU SIGLA-FEA Basketball Team, 81-68, in their Exhibition Basketball Game during the University Week at Fr. Tonus Gymnasium, December 8. During the initial game, SMU made a full blast heating up 19 points lead against USLT. Dennis Abosejo of SMU gathered six points in two shots, another three points from Edil Suarez and three freethrows from Percival Labog, the assistant coach of Yellow de Gryse of SMU-SIGLA FEA Basketball, that ended the first quarter , 27-8. As for the first half, USLT dribblers defended their team by successive three-point shots, freethrows and rebounds but SMU still trailed before them by Abosejo’s four two-point shots and four straight points from Elmer Annanga

Jr., concluded 48-25. USLT still try to guard their court placing 18 points but wasn’t enough to the additional 16 baskets of SMU in the third quarter ending up with 64-43. They concluded the rematch with consecutive points from both teams that the fighting aura of USLT dribblers appeared that narrowed their difference score from 21 to 13. The game culminated in favor of SMU, 81-68. Though they win, Labog says that the game is a friendly game. “The game was a friendly game. It so happen that we won over them kasi last February when we went to Cagayan, the same natalo kami at least ngayon, nakabawi [rin] kami sa kanila,” Labog said. Labog added that what made them redeem the match is the cooperation and the strategy of his teammates. “Yung strength kasi namin is nadala na rin sa bilis ng mga kasama namin and then kumpleto [pa] kami. Meron sa loob, may malalaki kami at isa pa maganda yung palitan

ng players. ‘Yun ‘yung nakita kong strength kaya nanalo kami,” he said. Moreover, Labog cited the faults of the opposing team that trails behind them. “Sa tingin ko, iba talaga ang home advantage at pagod din sila sa biyahe. Though, nakita naman natin na very competitive naman iyong mga games nila. ‘Yung isa kong nakitang weakness nila ay ‘yung freethrows nila na hindi kagaya ng dati 100% sila sa freethrows,” Labog stated. Meanwhile, Villaverde also mentioned what he observed during their game with the SMU shooters. “Malakas ‘yung ilalim nila, binantayan namin ‘yung ilalim at napabayaan namin ‘yung labas, doon naman sila tumira tapos pumapasok pa, pero sa tagal ko nang naglalaro with SMU, when it comes to the numbers of win, mas lamang talaga kami,” Villaverde said. Furthermore, both parties are looking forward to another rematch during the inter-CICM meet on February 2016 . M

NV dominates dancesports By Lexter Rodriguez

Pairs from Nueva Vizcaya dancesports team ruled the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Dancesports Competition 2016 at the Fr. Tonus Gymnasium, Feb. 20. The pairs of Mark Crisologo and Kyla Bayatan (first place), and Kevin Pagadut and Lea Velasco (second place) ruled the Latin American Category, beating competitors from Cagayan, Isabela, and Santiago City. Also, the tandem of Shaquille Naguit and Rozette Galzote, together with Daniel dela Cruz and Mariecris Dacayo, outclassed pairs from Cauayan City, Isabela, and Santiago City, as they capture the first and second spots in the Modern Standard Category. Galzote, a Dance Troupe member together with her fellow Team Vizcaya dancesports pairs, said that aside from their extensive training in the group, their edge among

other pairs from the region was their experience in the National PRISAA. “I think our edge was being National PRISAA performers. I myself have been a national qualifier for three consecutive years and for those years, I have already gained my confidence that made me and my partner perform well,” she said. Galzote also shared some difficulties they have experienced before the competition. “There were many difficulties as performers. One was going home very late at night just to perfect the routines but after those tiring nights and pain in our feet and body as well, we brought home the victory,” she happily exclaimed. Other winners were Team Santiago City who bagged third placers both in the two categories. The first and second runners up in the two categories will represent the region in the upcoming National PRISAA. M

Fire, Water rule Lawn Tennis Men’s Division By Jimboy Manitchala

CAMARADERIE. As a sign of sportsmanship, representatives from Incredible Metals and Valiant Earth shake their hands after a tight match in Lawn Tennis Mens Double Division.

An exchange of victory from Raging Fire and Unexpendable Water come about during the University Week’s Lawn Tennis championship match at the CICM Tennis Court, Dec. 10. Fire overpowered Water in Men-doubles, 8-2, and avenging from their last year’s loss in Men-doubles, Water also conquered Fire in Mensingles, 8-3. Harrison Selorio and Kevin Ruiz of Raging Fire heated up the court in the first set making the wall higher for the Unexpendable Water’s Exequiel Carreon and Jerico Santiago after winning the first set, 1-0. Water revenged their loss in the first set giving no

point to Fire after showcasing their skills in placing, 40-0. Ruiz was able to point after releasing a drop shot, 4015 and he quickly ended up the set after making an outside ball from a placing of Carreon, 1-1. Two consecutive service aces from Ruiz opened up for the third set while Selorio tighten their defense causing them to earn another two sets, 3-1. Water did not lose hope and give Fire a sudden death, 40-40, wherein Water dominated the set after Selorio made a short shot to bring back the ball, 3-2. Fire maintained their momentum until the end of the match without giving their rival a set using their winning service aces, smash, and placing. Also, with

the outside balls and faults committed by Water, the game ended with an 8-2 score. When asked about their advantage to their opponent, Selorio shared that they had better teamwork and they were talking to each other while inside the court. “May partnership kami ng kasama ko at talagang naguusap kami sa loob ng court,” Selorio said. Meanwhile, after receiving last year’s silver medal in lawn tennis (men doubles), Levi Keith Flores of Unexpendable Water reigned this year’s Lawn Tennis (men singles) after murdering Leomerson Picar of Raging Fire with an 8-3 score. Flores secured fourset advantage to Picar in the first part of the game after outwitting his rival with his

Earth steals the basket from Water, 56-55 By Gwenn Edphine Naui

After years of aiming for gold and trying to beat the School of Engineering and Architecture, Valiant Earth (composed of the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Education, and Public Administration and Governance) ended the reign of Unexpendable Water in a tight basketball championship match with a onepoint lead, 56-55, at the Fr. Tonus Gym, Dec. 11. From the very first few minutes of the game, the crowd were kept on their feet as Earth and Water exchanged baskets in what seemed to be an evenly-matched face-off with neither getting over a five-point lead. Defending champions Unexpendable Water had difficulty pressing more damage due to the challenger’s tight defense on valuable players and three points made. According to Earth’s Coach, Mr. Erwin Naval, the main concern

was to defend and level with Hanard Peralta and Gringo Officiar because they were Water’s lead chances. However, Water’s resistance was evident as they play their game. Officiar’s 3-pointer and 2-pointer throws nearly tied the scores at 48, 50, respectively. Water was looking to finally move ahead but Officiar could not make his third consecutive shot. The former’s momentum was impeded by Earth’s Mark Ruel Topino after converting a free throw. Earth is back on top at 51-50. Joker Sioco’s two points helped Earth to extend their lead to three but Water’s Christian Pascua cut that back to none as he fired a three. On the last ten seconds of the game, Sioco puts up a shocking longrange three points and he made it— 56-53, in favor of Valiant Earth. Water called a timeout to disturb Earth’s momentum and as the game resumed, Water converted two free throws, resulting to 56-55.

With Officiar’s failed attempt to shoot from the inside, closely guarded by the players of Earth, a potential foul on their favor was called due to aimless inbounding of Earth but the call was too late. Concluding, Water finally bows to Earth after four long basketball rondo. According to Officiar, he felt guilty when he didn’t make the last shot. “Parang ako yung nasisi na parang ako ‘yung nagpatalo kumbaga, eh masakit din sa loob ‘yun,” Officiar said. Former captain ball of Water also expressed his despair on the loss of his team mate who was not able to play because of his injury. “Mabigat sa kalooban, masakit, siyempre ‘yung legacy na eight years, pang ninth na sana kung nasungkit namin ngayon. Alam mo naman yung feeling na natatalo, ganun talaga, may nanalo, may natatalo,” Michael Callejo said. He also said that leadership is the only thing that he can share despite his

condition. “Kahit wala ako, malakas sila. Pero, nakita niyo naman, mga bata, siguro leadership, ‘yun lang ang maitutulong ko sa kanila kung meron man ako[ng mabibigay],” Callejo added. On the other hand, Sioco voiced his happiness after beating the Water and in his long three shot that decided the game. “Ang saya, ang saya sa pakiramdam, sobrang saya. Tsaka, ‘dun sa huling shot, nag-pray na lang ako na sana maipasok ko kasi ‘yun na lang ‘yung paraan ko kasi crucial game, kailangan nating manalo, kaya tsinambahan ko na lang pagtira ko sa tres kaya ‘yun naman, pinalad [naman] tayo, kaya nagawa natin,” he said. Naval also admitted that he trusted Sioco’s skills and advised his player to get in when it is free. “May tira talaga si Sioco, sabi ko nga sa kanya, ‘pag libre ka, deretsuhin niyo na,” Naval said. Former SMU Campus Personality crowned Mutya ng PRISAA 2016

By Lexter Rodriguez

Miss SMU Campus Personality 2015 Louise Aldeim Burgos was crowned as Region 2’s Mutya ng PRISAA 2016 as she represented the university in the annual search during the Regional Private Schools Athletic Association (RPRISAA) Meet at the Fr. Tonus Gymnasium, Feb. 19. With her simplicity, she was able to oust the seven other beauties of Region 2 in the said pageant. Although not bagging most of the awards, Burgos still showed confidence through her walk and composure and also gave her best to be poised, making her win the Best in Evening Gown award. After advancing to the final three, Burgos was

the epitome of grace and eloquence as she answered the final question ‘how does your school’s vision and mission find its way into the objectives of the PRISAA?’. Without missing a beat, she answered confidently that the school’s vision-mission really helped and influenced the objectives of the PRISAA as it encompassed the four core values of the school which were excellence, innovation, communion and passion for Christ’s mission and saying through these values, Region 2 could really achieve a goal, to be coordinated and successful for a better future to come. On the other hand, Burgos admitted that she was not confident about winning the title because all the

other candidates were really beautiful and it would be difficult to win since all were good. “Even before the pageant, I already told myself and my friends not to expect that I would bring home the crown because I have seen photos of some of the candidates and I was full of awe. What I could only think of was that it will definitely be challenging for me to win the title,” she said. As a Marian representing the province and the university, Burgos also expressed her sincerest gratitude to the Marian community. “I really appreciated the support from all the Marians because it really helped during the pageant. From there I saw their unity. I really am a proud

Marian because I opened our school’s vision-mission to the objectives of the PRISAA. I became their source of unity and I won title not just for myself but also for the Marian community,” she noted. Burgos will represent the region in the upcoming National PRISAA 2016 to be held in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, April 3-7. Other winners were Nicole H. Cabauatan of Cauayan City who bagged 1st runner-up, Best in School Uniform, Best in Sports Wear, and Miss Wit. Zenith Joy Khan of Santiago City was hailed 2nd runner-up and Mika Cabalonga of Ilagan, Isabela was awarded Best in Talent. M

Spikers June Umila, Angelica Constantino, and Nayomi Bedey are also part of the volleyball team off to the nationals. Arr-jay Lorenzana and Jane Lunag were selected for the second time for the nationals in baseball and softball, respectively. In taekwondo, Kenzy Ballatong is the lone Marian who made the cut for the team. Also Grace Sanad and Clarissa Sulio were also in the Table Tennis Women (Doubles). But if these athletes were stars for and from the Marian community, some of the brightest are from the dance sports. They are Kyla Bayatan, Mark Crisologo, Mariecris Dacayo, Daniel Dela Cruz, Rozette Galzote, Kevin Pagadut, Christine Lea Velasco, and Shaquille Naguit, set the dance floor on fire with their grace. Moreover, Louis Aldem Burgos with her stunning personality and look was crowned Mutya ng PRISAA to represent Region 2 in the

nationals. Along with the athletes qualified for the national PRISAA are coaches who are deemed most able in managing and mentoring the players. Coach Jason Maslang and Kenneth Maslang will coach for Table Tennis and Chess, respectively. SMU Dance Troupe instructor Dino Reyes will continue fuelling his dancers while Allan Guiab will also resume his advisory on Burgos. The badminton team coach Noel Abiva will guide the players for Badminton Women. Lastly, Navalta will serve as the over-all coordinator. Navalta shared that the general evaluation says that the delegates had a satisfying stay in SMU, especially in terms of the quarters, which is a big bonus after being able to send many qualified Marian players. According to Navalta, the hosting went smooth and this major event hosted by the school is indeed a good experience for the university. “Skills are useless if you played dirty.” This is the constant reminder of Navalta to the Marian athletes. Complemented by her words on giving your heart in every game, this reminder became a great push for the Marian athletes. Navalta also added that she was more than happy to acknowledge that the Marian athletes projected an improvement compared to the previous PRISAA.M

32 Marian athletes qualify for Nat’ls

By Gwenn Edphine Naui

Enthusiasm coated the Marian environment as they welcomed six delegations, namely Cagayan, Tuguegarao City, Isabela, Cauayan City, Santiago City, and Nueva Vizcaya, of the Regional Private Schools Athletic Association (RPRISAA),

Feb. 19-21, at Saint Mary’s University where over 30 Marian athletes claimed their ticket for the National level. According to Ms. Ronda Navalta, SMU sports coordinator, the event was supposed to take place in Ilagan City but due to the very

demanding Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association (CAVRAA) which Ilagan also hosted a day before PRISAA, the city decided to pass on the hosting. Navalta said that there was hesitation in accepting the responsibility but with the approval of the administration, SMU began its

preparations for the regionwide sports event. Navalta added that the event had no actual champion for it was a selection-based. There was no need to look for the best team because coaches and authorities planned to make the best team by selecting

from the different delegations the best players and uniting them as team Region II for the nationals which will be held at Koronadal City, South Cotabato on April 3-9, 2016. Marian jumpers Abigail Punghan and Heidi Punghan got the call to be part of the continue to page 22
