Yes, he has a lot of other patients, but he has a way of making you feel like you are his only one. His fees are the best in business. All he is asking is for you to pay him by giving him all of your cares, burdens, frustrations, disappointments, and anxieties. In return, he will give you the peace that surpasses medicine. When going through life’s storms, it is more important to ‘know’ that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel than to actually see it. We have some uplifting and empowering articles in store for you. Have a read!

A lady named Ruth was a caregiver for a blind man named Pete. Sometimes he would become angry and Ruth would retaliate by saying mean things under her breath - poking fun at his blindness. One morning, Pete angrily demanded that she fix him his favorite Frosted Flakes cereal. Ruth refused to fix him anything until he asked nicely. So Pete said, “Fine! I will fix it myself.” Pete reaches in the refrigerator for the milk and instead of reaching for the milk; he unknowingly picks the butter-milk instead. Ruth is observing Pete in action unwilling to say a word about his impending blunder. She thought this mistake

would teach ole Mr. Pete a lesson. While Pete was pulling the butter-milk out of the fridge, he mistakenly dropped it. When it spilled on the floor, Pete said out loud, “This is butter-milk. Why didn’t you tell me?!” So he put it back and got the right milk out. Ruth says to Pete, “Pete! I believe you can see!” Pete responded, “Why sure! Just know that I have the eyes of God.” After this, Ruth never said an unkind word about Pete under her breath because God had given him his eyes.

New Year - New You By: Tina Pannell Mason As 2012 prepares to come to its close, many of you have already begun thinking about all the resolutions you’re going to make to become a healthier person in the new year. Although you may make resolutions about your financial situation or your relationships, your health is right there at the top – so you promise to lose a couple of pounds and start exercising more. I would like to challenge all of you to use the power and strength found in God’s word to

help you keep those resolutions. God’s words are there to comfort, strengthen, and encourage you to be a “better” you. When you are in a close relationship with the Lord, you try to read his Word more and work harder each day to do what would please Him. If you follow God’s Word, when life seems a little rough and you have challenges and goals you are attempting to reach, you are able to pull the comfort of his words to the forefront to help you face

whatever your challenge is, even if that challenge happens to be working to be a healthier “you.” God’s Word is there to help you in all things. Placing a few scriptures on your mirror, or memorizing verses would be a way to have his Word readily available – and don’t forget to pray to the Lord always –even for the least of things. Here are some scriptures that would be great to memorize as you work on those 2013 resolutions.

“God’s words are there to comfort, strengthen, and encourage you to be a “better” you.” “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:3 What a perfect scripture to help you have success with your healthy living resolutions. Living a healthy lifestyle is in accordance with living in the light of God, so when you commit to a healthy lifestyle, you find nothing but support on a heavenly level. “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 When you want another serving of your favorite, delicious macaroni and cheese and yams, and … – need I continue? Don’t be tempted to overeat. Overeating is not a part of God’s plan, nor is it a way to praise and honor God. Making healthy choices is one way to live to the Glory of God. This healthy choice includes what you’re eating and drinking. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 When things get tough and hard to control, this scripture can help pull you through. Having healthy eating habits and watching your diet can be quite daunting! Remind yourself that you can find strength in Christ. You are better equipped to do work for God’s Kingdom when you are feeling healthy, so he will give you the strength that you need to overcome and to hang on when you are feeling weak. Stay healthy; stay strengthened by God’s empowering words to become that healthier “New You” in the new year.

Work your Way to Healing Interview By: Tess Rutherford Pastor Peyton Harrison is the Associate Pastor of Grace Covenant Church in San Diego, CA. September 10th, 2012, Peyton had received word from his doctors stating that all of his blood count levels fell within normal range and there was no need to see them for three years! The backdrop of his story involves many visits to the hospital, constant research, continuous testing, and many abnormal blood test results. After battling with health problems for over 20 years, Peyton was now diagnosed as “normal.” Peyton was flabbergasted by the news and he immediately thanked God for having mercy on him at his time of need. Growing up, Peyton’s mother gave him ni Green. In his role, he had many close calls with home remedies for maintaining a healthy body death and he was advised by a doctor to resign (e.g. castor oil and drinking olive oil, etc). The from his position to seek a less demanding role young and stubborn Peyton made a promise to elsewhere. became apparent after his near death experience. He was rushed to the hospital because he was having difficulties breathing. Once he made it to the hospital, his friend and personal physician, Dr. Frank Weschler, was there to greet him. While Peyton was lying flat on the gurney, Dr. Weschler rolled his chair over and leaned over and asked Peyton how he was feeling. Peyton was in no mood for small talk for he could barely breathe – let alone speak. Dr. Weschler says to Peyton, “Awe you don’t look too good man. All your color has left you. You looking real pale! You know…now that I have your attention, let me tell you something…” While Dr. Weschler was speaking, Peyton was thinking to himself, “Come on Frank! I’m suffering really BAD....GIVE ME SOME medication!” Frank continues speaking telling Peyton all the things that he had been emphasizing in past times. He

13

says, “Listen! I’ve been telling you for years to eat right and exercise and to take your medication and you haven’t done it. But now that I have your attention…” After a brief moment of panting and huffing and puffing, they gave Peyton oxygen. Peyton said he was just that close to dying. He said, “It was like being under water unable to catch my breath and about to go under for the very last time.” Peyton discovered his lungs were operating at 10% capacity. It was a miracle that Peyton made it through the scare. Nevertheless, he carried on with the status quo assuming that he was not required to put in any work to get his health under control. He did much praying but neglected the practicalities. Through a series of circumstances, Peyton transferred out of Wayman AME Church as Senior Pastor to join Grace

Covenant Christian Church as Associate Pastor. The transition was exactly what Pastor Peyton needed to de-stress his life. Shortly after the move, Peyton began to ask himself a number of health questions. He wondered why his minor illnesses always had a pattern of turning into major. How was it that his common colds always seem to transform into pneumonia? or Why it is that he would have double pneumonia or triple pneumonia within a one year period? Peyton had come to the realization that something was wrong about these scenarios. He started to take a real look at himself in pictures and was not completely satisfied with what he was seeing. It was obvious that he needed to lose weight, but he started thinking about his wife, children, grandchild, and future grandkids and expressed a deep longing to be around for them in the future.

Nov/Dec 2012 | http://empoweredmagonline.com

Peyton finally came to his senses and obeyed God by taking care of his physical body. Peyton says, “ Obedience brings life… Abundance of life. Gratefulnes and obedience will transform you. You can’t be grateful for your health sometimes until you are put into a position of ‘sipping air’.” Peyton connected with a home based company called Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing (FHTM) and started purchasing vitamins through them. He also began incorporating the five food groups into his diet. He started to exercise, stopped eating pasta, sodas, snacks, and best of all he stopped eating out.

In order to fall within normal body weight, Peyton needs to lose 60 pounds. So far, Peyton has lost over 30 pounds and is still actively maintaining his health goals. He is grateful that the Lord did not hold his rebellious spirit against him. Pastor Peyton thought back on how God supernaturally healed his father from high blood pressure and he saw how God, through another miracle, was performing a generational blessing through his family line. Peyton takes no credit for what God has accomplished. He always knew God was a healer but when he began mixing his works with his

faith, God showed up miraculously.

bride happy. He even taught Candace how to do various home improvements making her into his handy-man assistant!

David and Candace first met each another at church – Calvary Chapel. Candace describes the relationship best as, “We came but for friendship and took away love.” The couple married in 1995 and had great fun in celebrating their new life together. They had lived in several homes in Newport Beach, Ca. which David renovated. With every finished project, David thoroughly enjoyed making his new

17

E i g h t months into the m a r riage, D a vid began to experience sporadic pains in his body – first in the back, next in the shoulder and last in the neck area. After finally paying a visit to the doctor’s office, it was discovered that David had cancer. David had to undergo three brain surgeries, he had two ribs removed, and the most agonizing of all was the thyroid surgery. Candace was so unnerved about the thyroid procedure because of the chances of David losing too much blood. It was such a deli-

cate procedure. After the thyroid surgery, David was in need of a blood transfusion. While David recovered from the surgery, Candace recalls going into his room and seeing him in his feeble condition. The wonderfulness of the situation is the couple discovered unique ways to have intimacy to show love and affection. Due to the bandages and IVs, Candace was unable to kiss her husband so she tells him, “I wish I could kiss you!” David gives Candace an incredible look with his eyes then motions her to lift her finger along with his. When both of their index fingers meet and touch, Candace received sweet chills up and down her spine. She says, “it is amazing what can be created through restriction.” Even though David could not speak or move, the couple did, in fact, kiss by virtue of their fingers tips. With all of the health issues afflicting David, the two appreciated every moment together whether it involved sharing a meal, eating ice cream, shopping, walking the dog, or sitting on the sofa and watching television. The couple found joy in the simple things

Candace says, “When you’re dealing with a crisis you don’t know what to do…you have to muster up strength and courage to deal with it. Crisis is a part of life and we can handle it without falling totally apart. For it is through crises, God has the right to test the authenticity of our words. Whether we lose a house, a loved one, or a job, we must realize that God’s wisdom far exceeds the wisest of men. He knows best even when it hurts the most. The realness of our love for God is truly exposed in a crisis.” When David was given two months to live, it knocked the wind out of Candace. The two felt as though they were running out of time. The two would have done anything just to have more time. Candace could see the hourglass as the sand poured through so freely. She says with each grain of sand slipping to the other side so was their time with each other (David was slipping to the side of heaven). Nevertheless, through this situation, “the real essence of the covenant of marriage was realized, solidified, and exemplified.”

18

Soon, David seemed to experience a complete turn around in his health. Candace believes God gave David a reprieve. David and Candace decided to spend every waking moment together through seeing as much of the world as they possibly could in a year’s time. David was a fearless man. If there was a mountain, he wanted to climb it and where there was an ocean, he wanted to swim in it. The two traveled to London, Tahiti, Hawaii, Israel, Paris, Greece, and Italy. During their stay in Italy, things started to become perilous. David was getting dizzy and the two decided to cut their vacation short to head back home. One of the greatest challenges was getting David authorization to board the airplane. By God’s grace, security granted David access to board the flight. The couple had a long ways to go from Italy to Los Angeles but God managed to provide everything they needed. There was a nurse on the plane (Chizuko Berliner) who concocted some tea that would help David’s blood pressure rise because the altitude was decreasing David’s blood pressure drastically. God also provided another one of his angels on the plane. A man name John offered to take Candace’s place and rock David in an effort to calm him during the flight. Glory to God, this gave Candace an opportunity to take time out to gather her bearings considering all that was happening. It was such a wonderful gesture made by John, and Candace was simply floored by what God was doing through his instruments. Also another angel,

Michelle Marie, was a true source of comfort and support, helping in everyway to keep Candace calm, Candace knew that if David had died on that flight before her eyes, she would have died too. Finally, the plane had arrived at LAX and David was rushed to the hospital and had emergency brain surgery. A few months later, David passed away. When asked how she saw her way through the tragedy, Candace responded, “Only by the saving grace of God.” The doctors had given David two months to live but God had given David three and half years. Candace is grateful to God for extending David’s life and giving her a lifetime of memories. Her and David’s relationship was not

just about the longevity but rather about the quality. She says, “According to God, one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years is as one day. Time is immeasurable. Yet and still, God is still God. He is miraculous. He is all powerful. I trust God when things are going my way and I have to trust God when things are not going my way. My relationship with David was not for naught. Even though David has since gone on to be with the Lord, God had a divine purpose for our union. My assignment was to encourage David to believe the impossible and his assignment was to help me to become more fearless and courageous walking by

true faith. Through the completion of their assignments, Candace has been given a platform to share her story and encourage others in their relationships to savor every moment from beginning to end. Candace gives all glory to God and feels truly blessed by her Mother (Sondra B. Elmore) that also gave her the added strength and courage to Dare To Stand. If you would like to connect with Candace, reach her on Facebook and Twitter, her email is cchamb7545@aol.com.

Treasure Amidst By: Melissa Drobnak Trial Have you ever thought deeply about what it means to be “blessed?” Some of us are quick to insert the word “bless” into our everyday conversations without much thought. We “bless” our meals, we pray “blessings” over people, and we often say “Bless your heart” when offering sympathy to others. However, what does this simple word that we use in the context of food, prayer, and encouragement mean when life gets tough? I wonder if many of us would consider ourselves “blessed” in the midst of trials. Do you have to have uplifting people in your life, favorable circumstances, and good health to be blessed, as the world might teach us? Or, can you be surrounded by challenging people, unfortunate circumstances, and failing health and count yourself equally

blessed? Songwriter Laura Story offers a challenging, yet beautiful perspective on trials in her Grammy award-winning song, Blessings. After listening to Story’s interview on the meaning of the word “blessings,” I’ve been reminded that true, lasting blessings in life are not dependent on anything external. The spiritual blessings that we all long for, such as joy, peace, and contentment have nothing to do with our circumstances. Even the most troubled people can consider themselves blessed if they are in close communion with the Lord and choose to see the treasure in the midst of their trials. Consider these thoughts on blessedness by Laura Story:

“Could God possibly be blessing us through NOT giving us the things we are praying for...? There is a blessedness that comes through waiting on the Lord. There is an intimacy in our walk with the Lord that comes through walking through that valley. There’s a reliance on His Word that we only know when everything else in life fades away. In that sense, I truly feel like I am blessed.” (For Laura Story’s full interview see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5ljV_RA0CM.)

20

Nov/Dec 2012 | http://empoweredmagonline.com

How does your heart resonate with Story’s reflections on blessings? As we reflect on the past year, I imagine that some of us have memories filled with great joy and satisfaction, while others wish they could fast-forward past the pain and brokenness of 2012. Though the disappointment and heartache is real and the journey toward growth and healing may seem slow, I wonder how our lives might be different if we became treasure seekers and made it our mission to find the hidden blessings amidst the trials of life. We have a daily choice to either dwell on the hardships of life, or by God’s grace, choose to

21

embrace joy amidst the trials. As James 1:2-4 challenges us: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Perhaps 2013 will be the year marked with a more eternal perspective on trials, a fresh interpretation of the word “blessings,” and a year filled with joy that runs deeper than your circumstances. After all, the greatest treasures in life are not dependent

on our circumstances. No trial is great enough to rob us of the gift of eternal life, the promise of God’s faithfulness, the abundant life in Jesus, or the daily comfort of knowing we are dearly loved by God. Our faith may be tested as we encounter trials, but we are sealed with God’s Spirit. We are His Beloved. No pain or hardship can quench deep-rooted joy or jeopardize our identity in Him. Regardless of the trials behind or before us, we can rest assured that nothing can separate us from God’s perfect love. We are His Beloved. And I’d say that makes us all deeply blessed.
