QUARANTINE FITS how fashion has changed

During the global pandemic due to COVID-19, people are facing the harsh reality of not being able to do daily social things. Going out to dinner, hanging out with friends, spending a day shopping, and more daily interactions are being prevented. While everyone is doing their best to end this pandemic, people are finding ways to still stay in a routine. Quarantine fits is just one element of doing so. Even before the pandemic, athleisure, and loungewear was a rising trend. Due to being at home more than ever, it’s apparent that the on-going trend is here to stay. Almost every retailer has a curated “Stay at Home” section for their products to further promote what consumers are seeking. Consumers are looking for more ways to be able to put an outfit together for staying inside. When looking closer at trends emerging from staying at home, many people can agree that it’s too hard to get up and pick an outfit when they are staying inside or working from home. Products like loungewear sets make it easy and comfortable to put an outfit together. With tie-dye coming back into fashion since last year, many retailers are incorporating the fun trend into loungewear as well as consumers trying to make their own. With gyms and yoga studios closed, athleisure is skyrocketing as people are putting effort into taking on at home workouts and enjoying exercising outside. FATE 18

After living through the same day every day, people need that one day to wear a normal outfit. When interviewing people about where they believe fashion will go after the pandemic, it was common for them to believe that we will see these trends follow us as life tries to get back to what it once was.

“I’ve noticed that loungewear is definitely what most people are wearing. I love how a lot of my favorite stores are making them into sets because it makes me feel like what I’m wearing is dressier than it is.” - Michelle Aftandilian Watertown, MA

MINI. PNG EIRESS HAMMOND DISCUSSES HER EXPIERENCE THROUGH DEPOP AND HER UPCYCLED CLOTHING BRAND

FATE 34

When and how did you start selling on Depop? I started selling on Depop back in 2017, but it was only here and there that I was posting. I wasn’t really serious about it. I was mostly just looking for a place to get rid of some things in my closet. I only really started getting serious about selling on depop in the last couple of years. (2018-2020).

What advice do you have for someone just starting to sell on Depop? To be consistent! You have to literally post as much as you can and if so daily. The more you post the more sales you get. People need to have options from your store so if you post more they have more to choose from and you’re more likely to get sales! Also, make sure what you’re posting is good quality. Just pretend to be the customer looking at your own product.

What inspires your designs? I’m very inspired by human faces. I love facial features that stand out and aren’t the norm. Things like unibrows and freckles are really inspiring to me and you’ll see them a lot in my work.

How important is sustainability to you? Super important! As my business grows I’m doing my best to create a more eco-friendly environment surrounding my products. Things such as shipping packaging, and creating one of the one-pieces with my art by buying clothing from others! (Pre-loved clothing)

What do you look for in pieces to rework? I mainly look for pieces that are fun and may not be something that everyone has or is familiar with. My business has a lot to do with stepping out of the box and being as eye-catching as possible!

FATE 36

Do you see Depop/thrifting becoming a bigger market in the future? Without a doubt. As more people become aware of how destructive fast fashion really is, I do believe that more people will be interested in thrifting in general. Also, People love to own pieces that nobody else has. Depop has a lot of sellers who sell unique clothing. For example, people who sell vintage band tees! You can’t find these at your local mall and that’s the beauty of it.

What’s next for your business? As my business progresses, I’m looking into creating a website. At this time I’ve been getting so many orders that I need to create a system that’ll allow me to have more control over the pieces I have going out. But I will also be selling pieces on depop since the app generates its own audience! I’m also looking to connect with more people in terms of collaborations! Xoxo, Eiress

THRIFT FLIP creating new designs in a sustainable way To be sustainable and save money. That’s what everyone is striving for. As the fashion industry makes major shifts in the upcoming seasons in order to become more sustainable, consumers are looking for ways to do the same. Thrifting has become more popular than ever over the last few years. A way that people are becoming more innovative with their thrifted clothing, is altering them. A common word used now is “Thrift Flip”. During the time of being quarantined, flipping these thrifted clothes became a way to pass time and create new pieces while businesses were closed. Emerging from this period of quarantine, we are sure to see many people with more thrift flips than ever. Many people will find simple tops to crop or alter to fit them. It is also an opportunity to create that shirt you’ve been seeing all over social media out of something you thrifted. Some common Thrift Flips are cropping T-shirts, altering jeans, tie-dying sweatshirts and more. This is another way to save money, make pieces that are unique to you, and stay sustainable.

FATE 38

Finding your personal style can be a tough process, but by making you’re own designs out of inexpensive clothes, you have the freedom to be as expressive as you want through your style without breaking the bank.

“Thrifting is great. Takes away a lot of pressure on typical shopping, eco friendly, fun!”Anya Gellerman, Watertown, MA

“You can always find unique pieces and it’s better for the environment” - Sajda Abbas,

Watertown, MA

SNEAKERHEADS the world of street style sneakers a nd the reselling market

The Sneaker Resell industry is a $2 billion market that is predicted to reach $6 million by 2025. Brands like Nike, Adidas, designer brands, and celebrities have been releasing expensive and exclusive shoes for consumers over the years. As the sneaker industry grows, the desire to buy sneakers at retail and resell them at a high cost has grown. The resell world has added more exclusivity and needs for sneaker drops from brands. Apps and websites have also assisted in the growing market. Sites like Grailed make it easy for users to sell and post their own shoes. With this comes some skepticism. It can be harder for consumers to know if the pair of shoes is authentic or not. Negotiation also has to be done all through the customer and the seller. Sites like GOAT and StockX provide more authentication for customers. The companies authenticate the product themselves to guarantee that the customer is getting what they paid for. The number of physical stores filled with exclusive and designer sneakers has also been rising. These types of retailers don’t always look like your everyday shoe store. They are made to have a different ambiance to add to the high-end feel of their products. These stores also tend to carry apparel from brands that are seen in the streetwear reselling world.

FATE 44

Some feel that the way these sneakers are resold can make it more difficult for people to obtain sneakers. Usually, sellers will buy sneakers when they drop at retail prices. The shoe will normally sell out at retail price and sellers will start selling the shoe for much more. So, unless you are able to get the shoe at retail price, you will have to face the high value that the shoe might be at now for resale. The ever-growing sneaker resell market is creating a new aesthetic and trends within fashion. We first started to see this market emerge from streetwear. Today, we are still seeing the products within the resell market be worn within streetwear but it is also being worn through more casual and athleisure wear. Instead of pairing sneakers with other high-end designers, more styling with simple and inexpensive clothing is being seen and used as a way to elevate a look. The industry is only going up from here. Sneakers will continue to be sold out at retail and be resold for a much higher price. Over the next 5 years, the market will grow larger online and in-store.

ZOE YO U N G AN INSIGHT ON THE WORK OF ZOE YOUNG. A CURRENT STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKLEY STUDYING ART AND DESIGN. ZOE GIVES US A CLOSER LOOK AT HOW SHE EXPRESSES HER ART THROUGH GRAPHIC DESIGN, VISUAL DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT, ANIMATION, AND MORE.

FATE 70

What is your inspiration for your character illustrations? Most of my inspirations come from my friends, movies, and songs. A lot of my work, especially my recent work, is based on lyrics from songs. I tend to listen to some albums over and over again, so sometimes, I imagine little scenes in my head when I am singing along to my favorite song. I usually tend to sketch those moments and feelings out, and then it turns into an illustration! Some of my favorite albums with some of my favorite lyrics are InnerSpeaker by Tame Impala, any album by Father John Misty, and The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

How has art school helped you grow within your work? I am an art major, but I am not technically at an art school. I sometimes wish I was at an art school, but my school has taught me so much. Being at the University of California, Berkeley has opened up my mind in so many different ways. I love being around so many different types of cultures and love the campus itself. The friends and peers I’ve met there have really shaped my work for the better. I want my work to be relatable to many different people, and Berkeley has helped me do that.

In what market do you see yourself designing in for the future? I would love to work for a creative team at a company that I strongly believe in. I would love to be a graphic designer, illustrator, or product designer for any company that fits my aesthetics. I would fit the best at a skincare/makeup company, a film production studio, or a clothing company.

Do you mainly create your work digitally? Mostly all of my work now is digital. I mostly work in procreate or illustrator. For more of my fine art things, I always found myself the best at drawing, especially with figure drawing and charcoal drawings. FATE 74

lettersfromzoe

zoeyoungdesign.com

What other artists do you look to for inspiration? I tend to find a lot of my inspiration on my Pinterest or Instagram. I’ll drop some Instagram handles below! @subliming.jpg, @scottlava, @__dispencer__, @valfre , @itsannahurley, @karl_joel_larsson, @robertbeattyart

How have the current events of the pandemic impacted your work? The current events have helped me in many ways. I’ve been coping with my loneliness by doing more work. I tend to get more inspiration by always being around people, so I’ve really been trying hard to get inspired by myself. I’ve done more work than I have the whole year so far during this time. I do have my days, though, where I have no motivation at all. It’s hard to always work in a place where you find comfort and relaxation. Your room and home was made for those two things. I tend to get more work done in a library, coffee shop, or classroom.

What do you see yourself doing next? I am going to go back to Berkeley until my lease is up in June. I want to be able to spend as much time there as I can because I am slowly approaching my graduation date. I want my next steps to be doing something that makes me happy and excited, and so far, I am achieving that.

HOW IS THE TE

ERM CHANGING?

An influencer is someone who has the power to affect the purchasing decisions of others because of his or her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with his or her audience. As we entered the world of living around social media, the word slowly adapted. Influencer became more known as the word to describe someone who is a strong influence through media. People like Paris Hilton was one of the first people to be seen in this way. While the world is changing around us in so many ways, social media is changing also along with the meaning of an influencer. Influencers are a driving force within social media and affect how users are using apps, who they’re following, and how people are being influenced. As our world goes through one of the toughest periods it has faced, Influencers don’t have much -

FATE 78

to influence. Usually, Influencers are living their lives interacting with other influencers and living a more lavish lifestyle compared to their followers. Now that being social has been taken away for a period of time, there isn’t much difference in how Influencers are living their lives compared to their followers. With these current events, it also will be harder for individuals to take on an influencer role. One app that has played a big part in the influencer world is Tik Tok. Tik Tok has an algorithm that allows really any user to become viral. Every day people are gaining a large following. Some would say that Tik Tok is also making it more common to gain a large following on social media. This could also diminish the use of the word. Charlie D’Amelio was your typical 15-year-old girl who blew up for her dancing videos overnight. She is now up to around 56 million follows holding the highest number of following through the app. Before the global pandemic, she was seen traveling and gaining big brand deals. The app really gave her a chance to be in the spotlight. Influencers are also being seen more like celebrities. Influencers who gain such a high following, make a name for themselves, and even gain brand deals or create their own brand eventually become so famous that they are not just an influencer anymore. Although celebrities like Kylie Jenner were born into fame-

Pictured: Charlie D’Amelio, Avani Gregg, Dixie D’Amelio, and Addison Rae

she really gained a lot of followers for being herself through social media which helped her gain traction to her Kylie Cosmetics Company. Making her the youngest billionaire. At the same time, there is nothing for people to really influence while the world shifts. People are more looking for hope and to better their future and can’t afford to try to live a life like someone they see on social media. Brands usually depend on influencers with a high following to spread the messages about their products and their brand, but it has seemed as if brands are trying to become more connected with their customers through social media. During the pandemic, many brands have been reposting their customers rather than finding influencers to hire and have contracts with. This is also due to having to add to their expensive especially while they are losing business. So, what’s next for influencers? Will the word die off? Will we still see brands depend on highly known influencers as the world attempts to get back to how it was?

We took a closer look at how college students are making their way into the industry by using their skills and talents to create a platform for themselves.

ANNELISE SILKAITIS College: University of South Carolina Major: Psychology & Global Studies Minors: French and Advertising/Pr Field: Graphic Design How did you get started? I’ve always loved to draw and letter, so I decided to use the quarantine to practice my skills digitally using my iPad and Procreate! I made an Instagram account and am creating an Etsy shop to share my work and creative journey.

What inspires your work? I find a lot of my inspiration from Pinterest, close friends, family, nature, and the beauty/ fashion industry.

What advice do you have for someone just entering the same field as you? Work hard, stay committed, and make connections!

What do you enjoy most about your work? I love connecting with other artists and seeing a full piece come to life.

What’s next for you? I hope to continue to grow my account and Etsy shop, and eventually, create my own website!

MIRANDA RANEY College: Oklahoma State University Major: Strategic Communication + Political Science Field: Graphic Design How did you get started? A required intro to graphic design class for my degree!

What inspires your work? I work as a graphic designer for a progressive political campaign management firm in a VERY red state, so I definitely look for inspiration in leaders I love and the designers who give meaning to things as simple as their campaign colors. Huge feminist, an optimist— so my favorite artist is Ashley Longshore and women like Michelle Obama and Elizabeth Warren.

What advice do you have for someone just entering the same field? Show up on time, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to feel stupid! As a creative, your biggest doubter is yourself most times— so don’t get in your own way. People will only believe in your work if you do.

What do you enjoy most about your work? I get to start building all of our new clients’ brands, help them obtain it through social media/ websites, and give their campaigns a voice visually! A lot of the incumbents I work with are some of the smartest people I know with the greatest ideas, so it’s really important they have someone who is able to bring these ideas to life. It’s so special because I have a part in something larger than myself by the field I work in, but I am still able to be creative and do what I love! Visual identity of a campaign can play a big part in the attention it gets, and help get my clients elected is my top priority.

What’s next for you? I will be getting my master’s degree in PR from Georgetown and moving to DC!

What inspires your work? Other influencers and social media managers who are just starting out and working their hardest to produce amazing content!

What advice do you have for someone just entering the same field as you? Find something you love and set goals! It’ll never feel like work if you’re doing something you love!

What do you enjoy most about your work? How flexible and creative I can be! Everything on social media is customizable to whatever you’re trying to do!

What’s next for you? I’ll be entering my Junior year this fall so I will be continuing to pursue my degree while also continuing to run the social media for my sorority, Pi Beta Phi.

HIEDI WONG College: Hamilton College Major: Art and Creative Writing Field: Painting and Poetry How did you get started? I began posting my poems anonymously under the pen name (h.w.) on Instagram, and now that account has over 270k followers. In terms of art, I won the National Art and Calligraphy Competition of China for 6 consecutive years, which also allowed me to sell my paintings for $43,000 in a national charity art auction to benefit leukemia research for children

What inspires your work? Personal events, relationships, grief, cultural differences between the East and West (as I identify as the third culture.) Surrealism, subconsciousness, and dreams.

What advice do you have for someone just entering the same field as you? Don’t rush into it. I entered the arts field too young and have rushed into publishing contracts for my poetry before I was ready. Art comes from life, so living your life is just as important as your productivity.

What do you enjoy most about your work? How people can distinctly tell it’s mine from the style, tone, or message

What’s next for you? My 3rd poetry collection, possibly an art show, and I’m hoping to move into fashion as well and start my own brand.
