Editor’s Note

I

n this month’s issue of Endeavour, we had the pleasure of catching up with Adria Power Systems to see how they have fared since we last covered them. Speaking to the president of the company we go to see the great work Adria Power Systems has been doing to electrify the mining industry, particularly focusing on the production of its game-changing charging solutions. Consequently, Adria Power Systems is leading the industry through its innovative designs towards a more sustainable future. Then we bring you a whole host of agricultural features which are showing how vital the seed industries across the world are for the security of food production and regional economic development. We got the chance to interact with the Zambia Seed Trade Association (ZASTA), to see the crucial work the association does to develop the Zambian seed industry towards international markets, whilst working to develop its own presence in the global seed sector. We also cover the vital work that the African Seed Trade Association and The Chilean Seed Association are doing to promote, support and develop the seed industries in their respective regions. Following this, we got to look at Medcorp Limited Group and highlight the crucial role they are playing in developing healthcare across Trinidad and Tobago on its 30th birthday! This month we also look at a range of companies excelling across a variety of sectors, including construction, tourism, mining, and manufacturing. It is clear that this month’s issue covers a wide variety of businesses, but one thing remains the same – every company, association and organisation is developing their operations towards continued global success.

Asia/Oceania New Age Law Introduced in South Korea South Korea previously had two different agecounting methods, with one stating that at birth you were already one year old to account for the time spent in the womb. The other counted ageing by the first day of January every year. However, these systems have now been scrapped in place of an international counting system which records ageing based on your actual birth date. The move to an international age counting system comes as President Yoon Suk Yeol reportedly found the previous system created “unnecessary social and economic costs”. Disputes have arisen in South Korea over insurance pay-outs and measures to determine eligibility for government assistance programmes which are based on age. Therefore, the implementation of an international standardised age-counting system is meant to mitigate these issues.

Hottest June in 60 years for China

During June, Beijing experienced a prolonged heatwave which brought extreme temperatures across the city. The hottest day recorded was at 41.1°C (105.9F), which was reported by officials to have been the hottest June day for Beijing since recording keeping began in 1961. The month saw a range of heat records being broken across the country, which comes as a fearful reality that climate change is increasing temperatures across the world. With the increase in temperature, many turn to air conditions, however, this has promoted fears that electricity usage is set to increase over the coming months and is a possible reality for the future. Last week, China’s National Energy Administration staged its first-ever emergency drill in the country’s eastern region to simulate a power surge and outage to better deal with large-scale power outages in the future if energy use is set to go up.

Whale Follows Kayak at Bondi Beach Every year, many whales are spotted close to the shoreline of Australia, but this year has seen an increase in whale numbers which is believed to have occurred thanks to the better weather so early in the season. Humpback whales make the yearly migratory trip from Antarctica to Australia, often arriving in the northeastern state of Queensland. The beach is popular for whale watching, however, one kayaker got more than they bargained for when they were followed by a whale off the shore. In footage captured by drone, stunning images of a giant humpback whale swimming closely behind a small white kayak can be seen. The kayaker got to witness the spectacle of the whale’s migration up close and serves as a reminder of just how lucky those on the coast are to witness this spectacle.

Africa Shell Oil Spill in Nigeria

An oil spill in southern Nigeria has been confirmed by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited. The spill, which took place on the Trans Niger pipeline, has been reported to have lasted several days before it was contained and has caused many environmental concerns. The Niger Delta region already has been subjected to an array of pollution, conflict and corruption related to the oil and gas industry in previous years. According to CNN, the Shell division has blamed many of the spills across the pipeline on vandalism and illegal tapping of crude oil. Representatives from Shell, the Nigerian Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, and local communities have been called on to analyse the spill, its cause, and any environmental impacts.

EU Regulations Hit South African Orange Exports South Africa is currently one of the world’s largest exporters of oranges, with many being exported across the European Union. However, new regulations have been introduced by the EU which requires citrus fruits to undergo special cooling treatments before the fruits are shipped. The treatment was introduced to stop insects such as the false codling moth and a condition called citrus black spot, in the produce. Therefore, growers are now expected to cool the oranges below 2°C for at least 20 days before they are shipped. However, this will require citrus growers to invest in new technology and storage which will disproportionately affect South African growers. Therefore, the CEO of the Citrus Growers Association of South Africa has warned South African orange exports could face a 20% hit due to these regulations, losing an estimated £20m for the country’s orange industry.

African Painted Dog Spotted in Uganda For the last 40 years, the African Painted Dog, also known as the African Wild Dog, has been thought to be extinct and was listed as endangered by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, the Uganda Wildlife Authority posted images taken by one of its rangers of two of the elusive dogs by the Narus River in Kidepo Valley National Park. The dogs are known for their distinctive irregular coat pattern and patches. The discovery comes as a happy development for a country that does not have the best history of conserving wildlife due to increasing instances of poaching.

Americas Titan Sub Implodes on Trip to Titanic

Pizza Shops in New York Face Emissions Cuts

The Ocean Gate Titan Sub was planned to take its passengers to see the ship wreckage of the Titanic, however shortly after its departure it lost contact with the control ship. This led to many days of searching with international vessels being sent to help with the search. However, it is believed that the sub imploded 90 minutes after its departure, sadly killing all 5 people on board the vessel. Debris from the sub has now been located and is being sent to US medical professionals to conduct a formal analysis. The investigation is still in its early stages to understand the events and factors which led to the disastrous loss of the Titan and its passengers on board.

New York’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has proposed a rule which would require pizzerias to evaluate whether they can install emission control devices for their kitchen stoves. The restaurants will be required to evaluate their exhaust systems to see if they can be fitted with scrubbers to reduce the number of pollutants they release. This proposed rule has been criticised as many believe it may change the flavour of the pizzas and will be a costly expense to many businesses. However, the DEP believes wood and coal-fired stoves are contributing to the poor air quality across neighbourhoods. If the rule is implemented, it could cause many restaurants to increase the price of pizzas to deal with the increased cost of emission-trapping machines.

Ancient Maya City found in Mexican Jungle Archaeologists have found several pyramid-like structures and a range of pottery pieces deep in the Jungle of the Yucatán Peninsula. The findings indicate that it was inhabited between 600 and 800 AD. The discovery comes as part of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History fieldwork to document the archaeology of the Central Maya Lowlands. The Maya were renowned for their pyramid temples and stone building, so the discovery of 15m high pyramid-like structures was an exciting development. According to the team leader of the fieldwork, the site is likely to have changed a lot between 800 and 1000 AD, before it fell victim to the collapse of the Maya civilisation in the 10th century.

Middle East Empowering Women in Jordan Through Farming A farming collective made up of Jordanian and Syrian women has been growing Azolla plants which are cheaper and easier to grow than corn and make a great alternative for livestock feed. Azolla can be grown on the surface of pools, making it a popular choice among smaller farming groups and in dry climates. The plant contains high levels of proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants making it a great choice for weight development and milk production in animals such as cows or goats. Many female farmers across Jordan have been trained to grow Azolla, which directly improves the income and access to nutritious food for the women’s families and local communities. Therefore, growing Azolla provides great potential and economic development for communities like Mafraq, where water sources are limited.

New Economic Policies for Turkey

After Erdogan was re-elected last month, he set out a series of policies which are aimed to tackle the economic crisis of Turkey, which has seen inflation rates increase and the value of the lira plummet to a record low. One of his policies has seen Turkey’s central bank hike its rate to 15%, to try and get the country on a course away from increasing inflation as soon as possible. This comes as a U-turn for Erdogan’s previous policy which cut interest rates to 8.5% in 2021. Furthermore, the Turkish government is working to extend its current measure which limits rent increases to a maximum of 25% to help curb inflation. Whilst Erdogan’s run-off election raised hopes for a future of economic stability, the value of the lira continues to slowly decline.

Protestors Demand Access to Savings A group of protestors rallied in Beirut outside of the central bank to demand access to their savings and demand answers from the governor. Lebanon’s economic breakdown previously reached a breaking point in 2019 when the central bank began imposing capital controls, caps on withdrawal and the prevention of most people in Lebanon from transferring money overseas. The central bank confirmed a new exchange rate earlier this year at 15,000 pounds per US dollar, scrapping the previous rate of roughly 1,500 pounds per dollar before the economic collapse. However, many have complained that the new official rate disadvantages the people of Lebanon as the pound had been around 100,00 to the dollar on the parallel market, where many daily transactions are made. Protestors have been taking to the streets for years, and fear that they may never see their money again. They are demanding the governor be held accountable for worsening the economic crisis.

Europe Unrest Across France after Teen Death

Women’s Prize for Fiction Winner Announced

Clashes have been reported across France as people have taken to the streets to show their outrage over the killing of a 17-year-old by police. The teen was reportedly shot at point-blank range for refusing a traffic stop in Nanterre. The police officer has been placed under formal investigation and over 180 people have been arrested following the recent days of protesting. The BBC has reported that 40,000 police officers have been deployed across the country to deal with the protests, which has seen videos circulating online of widespread unrest including cars being set alight and shops being ransacked. In recent days, President Macron held an emergency crisis meeting and called for an end to the violence on the streets.

The UK’s most prestigious annual book award celebration and honouring fiction written by women announced that Barbara Kingsolver had won the award for a second time with her book Demon Copperhead. Barbara Kingsolver is the first author to win the award twice, having already won back in 2010 with her novel The Lacuna. Kingsolver has seen great success with Demon Copperhead having also won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction with it earlier this year too. Demon Copperhead is said to be a reworking of Charles Dickens’ novel David Copperfield. The book focused on the relocation story from Victorian England to the modern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, telling the sort of a boy born in a trailer park as he navigates foster care, labour exploitation, addiction, love, and loss.

Meat Consumption Drops in Germany According to Germany’s Ministry for Agriculture, an increasing number of Germans are swapping meat products for plant-based alternatives. Their figures show that meat consumption has dropped to 52 kg per person in 2022, which is the lowest it has been since 1989 when records began. It is believed that this is largely due to animal welfare, climate change and the increasingly high prices of meat which are causing Germans to look for alternative options. The shift away from meat and towards plantbased substitutes is a move seen across the globe to help tackle climate change on a personal level. However, many Germans are not planning or do not want to eat meat substitutes, as it is still only 10% of consumers are opting for plant-based options. While this is an increase from 6% in 2018, it still shows that the majority of Germans are not ready to give up meat in place of meat-free alternatives.

COOLING DOWN THE PLANET: Re-Greening Africa Justdiggit has set out on a mission to re-green the landscapes of Africa and restore them to their former glory. The organisation has the overarching goal to reverse the effects of climate change on the land and contribute greatly towards cooling down the planet.

12 | Endeavour Magazine

J

ustdiggit believes in the power of nature, and that by helping farmers and their local communities to restore the land they can increase crop potential, bring more vegetation, and establish an impactful legacy for climate change reversal. Having already restored over 300,000 hectares of land and 9 million trees; they are set to hit their goal of making African land green, lush and cool by 2030. In Africa, 3.9 million hectares of forests are lost every year, with about 65% of the land across the continent being affected by degradation. This continued degradation has resulted in increasingly scarce food, heightened poverty rates and the loss of biodiversity impacting the people, wildlife,

and biodiversity of the land. However, according to Justdiggit, there are 2 billion hectares of land across Africa which they believe can be restored. Therefore, as Africa has the largest potential for restoration across the globe it makes the perfect place for Justdiggit to begin their operations to protect and bring back the biodiversity of some of the world’s most precious ecosystems.

Justdiggit believes in nature-based solutions, as they are deemed to be the most effective and sustainable way to restore the land, whilst contributing towards bringing down the ever-rising global temperature.

Its re-greening techniques include Treecovery, or Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), which uses agroforestry techniques to regrow trees whilst supporting the growth of trees that are already naturally growing there. This technique involves pruning and protecting the stumps of cutdown trees that they believe can be regrown into full trees providing they receive the right care. Through this program, Justdiggit, along with farmers across Africa, has restored 14 million trees, with most of the trees being brought back in Central Tanzania, where the Treecovery programme has been promoted the longest. One of the organisation’s major developments across Africa is in the digging of bunds. Bunds are semi-circular pits which capture rainwater in them Endeavour Magazine | 13

and so give the water more time to enter the soil and restore the water balance of the earth. However, in many African countries, there isn’t enough rainfall, but when it does rain it rains hard. Therefore, these bunds are ready to capture the rainfall from these heavy downpours making the rain as useful to the land as possible. By capturing the water and restoring its water balance in the soil, seeds can begin to sprout to rejuvenate the lands towards a green, lush, and cool future. The organisation focuses on how trees and plants provide natural air conditioning to the planet, so by giving these the best chance of growing across Africa it can contribute to reducing the global temperature that has dramatically increased over the last few decades.

Another key technique established by Justdiggit in Africa is grass seed banks which enrich the land, by providing a haven of greenery to the previously barren landscapes. The hay can be harvested for food for livestock during dry seasons or sold along with the seeds to other organisations, and in local markets, to bring a steady income to the farmers and their local communities. Through this technique, Justdiggit has been working with Maasai women’s groups who manage and maintain the grass seed banks. Having established another 4 seed banks in 2022, Justdiggit has brought another 100 women into the scheme to invest in women’s entrepreneurship and the development of land restoration. Collectively, the Maasai women harvested 4000 kilograms of grass seed in 2022, contributing to the local economy and working towards cooling down the planet. Justdiggit has implemented a range of other techniques across the continent based on specific 14 | Endeavour Magazine

climates, resources, and unique characteristics of the land to ensure that they are helping local farmers and communities to develop the landscapes whilst contributing to their economic success. These include measures to reduce overgrazing of grass and rainwater capture systems on hills to benefit the restoration of the land. Overall, they have worked with 550 villages in FMNR projects, trained close to 2000 farmers, retained 3.75 billion litres of water through the digging on bunds and established 12 seed banks across the continent to develop and restore the land towards a future of climate change stability. Justdiggit is working across the globe to encourage people to reduce the effects of climate change one step at a time. Their work across Africa exemplifies the key role re-greening and restoration can play in moving towards a cooler global future, whilst implementing techniques which benefit the local communities and economies at the same time. However, Justdiggit is not stopping there – they are continually ramping up their operations to grow a global grassroots regreening movement to boost land restoration projects by continuing to work with other organisations. Furthermore, they are developing a new mobile platform which will make it possible for millions of farmers to re-green their land without the need for NGOs such as Justdiggit to be on site physically. Therefore, it is clear that Justdiggit believes in working with people to inspire change, as only through working, supporting and facilitating the development of landscapes towards the future, can we begin to tackle the vast operation to reduce the temperature of the world on a global scale.

PROVIDING CHARGING SOLUTIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE Adria Power Systems chevron-square-right https://adria-mfg.ca/EN phone-square 1-819-797-5881 envelope-square info@adria-corp.com

Adria Power Systems

Mining in North America is a massive industry, which has seen a crucial push towards the use of clean energy in the last 10 years. This shift was noticed by Adria Power Systems back in 2012 when it was a leader in moving the industry towards the electrification of heavyduty mining equipment. Now in 2023, big names in the mining industry have also made the move towards electrifying their mining machinery so the market is becoming increasingly competitive. We got the chance to catch up again with Jean-François Couillard, President of Adria Power Systems, to see how the company is staying ahead of the game as a trusted brand for its high-powered electrical equipment.

L

ocated in Rouyn-Noranda, Adria designs and manufactures distribution and electrical power products for the industrial, commercial, and mining sectors. With more than 25 years of experience, Adria leads the way with its power solutions which are reliable, robust, and adaptable to meet the needs of its customers. Adria offers a variety of high-powered systems and machinery including medium-voltage portable charging substations, mine power centres, monobloc skid-mounted substations, portable switchgear, portable medium-voltage switches, and junction boxes - to name just a few.

Adria designs its products with the customer in mind and has built a sturdy foundation as a supplier of safe, durable, efficient, and highquality equipment. This is especially pertinent in the mining industry where equipment must deal with harsh conditions including humidity, dust, and severe vibrations. Manufacturers such as Adria must build their products to ensure that they can withstand these conditions and continue to be effective in providing power solutions. For Adria, every system is designed with the most challenging mining conditions in mind, and so Adria continues to be a key supplier across the mining industry as it steadily moves towards a more sustainable way of operating. A crucial feature of Adria’s charging stations is that they can facilitate OEMs of a variety of voltages. The adaptability of the equipment produced by Adria is key to their continued success. The high-power systems have multiple outputs all of which produce a consistent level of low-voltage power. However, these low-voltage outputs can be bridged together to produce a higher output across the system. This is crucial for its adaptability for a variety of OEMs as the charger can be reduced or increased based on appliance need, rather than needing a whole new charging system. The charging stations also provide a step-up and step-down facility to work in a larger system to ensure that power can extend throughout every site of operation. This adaptability works towards the future of electrifying the industry; when new technologies are developed, the same systems created by Adria can be used by joining outputs together to meet the potential needs of higher-output appliances of the future. Furthermore, Adria has recently launched a new

18 | Endeavour Magazine

Adria Power Systems

generation of high-power chargers, which will provide more advanced features for its customers and shows its commitment to constantly developing its systems towards the future.

What sets Adria apart from its competitors in the ever-competitive world of electrical solutions is that it is not tied to any singular OEM, meaning it can provide universal charging systems for a variety of markets. This is crucial as many OEMs began working with commercial charging solutions that, whilst cheaper, do not stand the test of time and become costly to replace causing ricocheting effects down the mining supply chains. Therefore, as Adria’s charging systems are built for their reliability and robustness, many OEMs are shifting over to Adria’s solutions which are compatible with a variety of applications, unlike many brand-specific ones. This makes them the chosen charging solution provider over many competitors. Adria is looking to improve clean energy solutions across the industry

20 | Endeavour Magazine

with equipment that is operational with many appliances, rather than being exclusively used for one brand which does not benefit the global push towards sustainability in mining. We have seen Adria’s role as a leader in the mining industry expand as it has been tasked to help create a 1-Megawatt bi-directional charging system with 4 bridgeable outputs as part of a federalprovincial government electrification program. In collaboration with several other companies, the project is with Nouveau Mode Graphite’s Matawinie Project and will provide a new electric charging system to help develop the rapid charging infrastructure for heavy vehicles in the open-pit mining industry. The goal is to power a Western Star 6900XD truck which has a 40-ton capacity and will allow Adria to test out their charging system in an industry-first collaboration towards the future of mine electrification. If successful, Adria will have produced one of the most advanced mining charging systems available on the market. As Adria looks towards the future, it is expecting to see an increase in demand for charging infrastructure, especially in the underground mining industry. An increase in demand for clean energy

Providing Charging Solutions Across the Globe

across the mining industry will require more solid charging infrastructures to take pressure off the existing electrical infrastructure of the mine, which Adria aims to facilitate with their continuously developing electrical solutions.

Furthermore, the industry is evolving towards standardisation. It came as The Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG) recently published new guidelines for the standardisation of the implementation of electric machinery across the mining industry. This is set to bring new challenges to mining, but challenges that Adria takes in its stride having spent the last 10 years preparing to assist in the inevitable push towards standardisation. Therefore, Adria will continue to develop the further standardisation of the industry, which ultimately helps to achieve the company’s overarching goal of providing more sustainable solutions across the globe.

future of clean energy. The industry acknowledges that it can never be fully sustainable due to the mining of finite resources, however, companies such as Adria are providing solutions that are making a difference across a multitude of industries including mining. By facilitating the development of the mining industry through its crucial work to provide reliable, robust, and adaptable charging systems, Adria leads the way as a company that is always ahead of the curve pushing industries towards a sustainable future. We can’t wait to see what Adria Power Systems does next, and how it continues to expand across even more sectors as a pioneer for clean energy.

Overall, the mining industry is a mature market, but it is actively responding to the shifting nature of the world and doing its part to develop towards the

SUCCESS ACROSS THE SEED TRADE INDUSTRY Zambian Seed Trade Association chevron-square-right http://www.zasta.net/ phone-square +260211258646 envelope-square zasta@zasta.net

Zambian Seed Trade Association

Zambia is endowed with ideal climatic conditions and fertile soil which supports the vibrant and rapidly growing farming industry to produce a range of quality crops. To grow these crops, farmers across the country use high-quality certified seeds which are produced and supplied by many seed companies.

T

he Zambia Seed Trade Association (ZASTA), to which most seed companies in the country belong, was established to promote the interest of its member seed companies and the seed industry in Zambia. Consequently, ZASTA provides a platform for the exchange of information among the key players of the seed industry in Zambia, whilst contributing to the effective and efficient delivery of seeds across the country. We got the opportunity to interact with the President of ZASTA, Mr Marx Mbunji, and Mr Godfrey Mwila, ZASTA’s Executive Secretary, who provided some insights into the great work that ZASTA has been doing in Zambia and its vision going into the future.

Established in 1999, ZASTA is a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation, registered under the Societies Act in Zambia. With 26 members, the Association is at the helm of Zambia’s seed industry, which is a major player in the regional and international seed trade, focused on promoting profitable seed enterprises involving the production, distribution, and marketing of high-quality seed for a wide range of crops. Over the last 20 years, ZASTA has grown exponentially in line with the growing seed industry across Zambia, which has resulted in the increase of seed companies from 4 when the Association began, to now 30 companies operating across the entire country. Consequently, the seed industry across Zambia is much more wellestablished compared to other countries on the continent with its vast network of seed growers, distributors, and a firm regulatory system. ZASTA supports its members in running their commercial seed enterprises, which are responsible for supplying the vast majority of certified and highquality seed to all categories of farmers across the country. In Zambia, the seed market is dominated largely by hybrid maize seed; however, the country is also producing a variety of other crops including beans, groundnuts, sunflowers, soybeans, Irish potatoes and a wide range of vegetables and fruits. Although the Zambian seed industry is well developed and continues to grow, there has been a big increase in incidences of fake seeds being offered for sale on the open market. measures in place to tackle this issue and ensure that illegal seed dealers are detoured from serving farmers. In addition, ZASTA fosters good ethical business practices among seed companies and other players along the country’s seed supply chains. These business practices ensure that its member seed companies and the subsequent farmer’s interests are protected through the delivery of certified and high-quality seeds. The Association’s members include commercial seed companies which are operating in global, regional, and national seed markets. Together with Associate and Honorary members, the 21 private seed companies, who are full members of ZASTA, continue to work hard to promote and grow the seed industry in Zambia, to the extent that the seed industry in Zambia is regionally and internationally recognised as a good model for seed trade development. Additionally, the Associate and Honorary members provide valuable research and development towards the future of seed industry technologies and in the provision of seed

regulatory services. Furthermore, most of the private seed companies are fully-fledged seed enterprises which have established research and development facilities to enable the production of early-generation seed, the production of certified seed, and the distribution and marketing of seed among the farming communities across Zambia. Markets for the Zambian-produced seed include export markets to countries in Africa and beyond. The three Associate members are Amiran and Hygrotech who are involved in vegetable and horticultural crops seedling production and distribution, and Harvest Plus, who are involved in supporting research for the development of biofortified crop varieties in maize, beans, sweet potato, and cassava.

The Honorary members who support the seed industry by conducting agricultural research and development are the Zambian Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI), a public agricultural research organisation, and the School of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Zambia. Additionally, the Seed Control and Certification Institute (SCCI) is an honorary member providing regulatory services to the seed industry. Furthermore, as an affiliate of the African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA), ZASTA actively participates in their programmes to improve its own services, whilst providing its member companies with the global expertise to help develop and expand their business operations in the local, national, and international markets. The Association is run by an Executive Board comprising of five elected members including Mr Marx Mbunji the President, the Vice President, the Treasurer, two committee members and the immediate past President. The role of the committee is to oversee the running of the Association, which meets once per quarter to review updates from the three subcommittees. The first sub-committee looks at projects, the second looks at ZASTA’s strategic plans and advocacy work, and the third focuses on its memberships, financials, and ethics. When we spoke to ZASTA, they focused on how crucial leadership was for the effective operation of the Association. For Mr Mwila, who is the Executive Secretary of ZASTA, he believes that as one of the key strategies, the Association should increase stakeholder engagement which will facilitate the 26 | Endeavour Magazine

continued sharing of experiences and learning. Through this exchange of experience and learning, he believes ZASTA can continue to understand the key issues affecting the industry and identify approaches needed to address these challenges, whilst leveraging on the available opportunities. As part of their corporate social responsibility (CRS) initiatives, member seed companies are collaborating in a ZASTA-led Waste Management Project. The project is working to prevent and reduce the contamination of the environment by promoting the safe disposal of chemical waste which is produced from seed treatment and packaging processes. The Waste Management Project aims to ensure that a consistent level of environmentalism is upheld throughout the supply chain, as a crucial part of ZASTA’s work is to protect and support the environments in which its members and subsequent farming communities operate in. Furthermore, ZASTA is also encouraging seed companies, and the public research institutes it works closely with, to develop and make available more crop varieties which are nutrient-rich, efficient in their use of nutrients and tolerant to climate change effects. It is hoped that producing

Success Across the Seed Trade Industry

more of these crop varieties will contribute towards enhancing food and nutrition security, whilst helping to reduce the amount of fertiliser needed for growing high-quality crops.

Looking towards the future, we learnt that the Executive Committee of ZASTA had embarked on a transformative agenda, which plans to grow and expand the mandate of the Association whilst increasing stakeholder engagement. Part of this agenda is to improve the visibility of the Association across the seed industry by highlighting the role ZASTA plays in driving and coordinating activities in this sector. Consequently, ZASTA aims to carry out some statutory functions to oversee seed certification, seed distribution and the provision of technical

information pertaining to seed matters. A key aspect of this transformation is to broaden ZASTA’s revenue base to provide functional and financial stability across the Association. In line with this, ZASTA aims to increase the capacity of the secretariat to be able to implement more programmes and activities to benefit its members, as well as the seed industry at large. Overall, ZASTA is working to improve the seed industry in Zambia by providing stability and expertise to benefit its member companies, which in turn highlights ZASTA as a key player in the seed trade sector. By safeguarding the future of the seed trade in Zambia through the support of seed companies, its environmentalism work, the monitoring of illegal activity and efforts to protect farmers, ZASTA leads the way as the only commercial seed trade Association providing continued support to the seed industry in Zambia.

UNITING THE AFRICAN SEED INDUSTRY African Seed Trade Association chevron-square-right https://afsta.org/ phone-square +254 20 242 9017 envelope-square afsta@afsta.org

African Seed Trade Association

The landscape of the African seed trade is shifting; the industry is moving away from publicly funded seed systems towards a more diversified market which is led by private seed companies and associations. The private seed sector is becoming more and more well-established each year, which has forced governments across Africa to acknowledge the role private seed companies play in the availability and delivery of high-quality seed to farmers across the continent.

T

he private seed sector plays a key role in the growth of the agricultural sector and its development across the continent. Consequently, the African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA) was established in 2000 to be a uniting voice throughout the private seed sector, and to aid in the development of the seed industry both within the continent and across the globe.

With over 20 years of experience, AFSTA is a not-for-profit membership association formed to champion the interests of private seed companies across the continent. It is registered in Kenya as an international organisation which is providing crucial support, networking, and advocacy for its 150+ members. The members include a variety of private seed companies as well as several national seed trade associations, which have built up a network of companies and organisations across the globe. All the members are working together under AFSTA to bring huge development and security for the seed trade and subsequent agriculture industry in Africa. AFSTA’s main objective is to promote the trade of high-quality seed across the continent and towards global seed markets. To do this AFSTA believes in providing its members with key knowledge of the seed industry, which it has gained from its development of a statistical database that looks into the seed production and trade on the continent. Ultimately, AFSTA aims to bring a united voice to the African seed industry by effectively working with governments and NGOs to promote the crucial role that private seed companies play in the African seed industry. Therefore, as an overarching governing body, AFSTA is actively working to establish a level of regulation to bring harmonization throughout the industry in Africa to ensure the efficient delivery of seed. As part of this, they are actively working with seed companies across the continent to set up national seed trade associations. Working with national seed trade associations, AFSTA can ensure consistency throughout the industry due to the personalised perspective of land, economy, and climate that the national associations provide. Therefore, by encouraging countries to establish their own regulatory boards, AFSTA encourages more efficient distribution of seed in the industry, by ensuring that the

African Seed Trade Association

development of seed business is developing on both a regional and national level.

AFSTA’s mission is to create the best environment for trade and innovation possible to produce quality seeds for the benefit of its members and farmers in Africa. The Association wants all farmers to have access to top-quality seed which reinforces the stability and security of the food industry. Their work is essential as the African seed industry has faced some crucial challenges; whether that be due to outdated seed laws and regulations (which has had an adverse effect on the ability or desire for private-sector investment in the seed industry), or due to the limited government support for the seed business, which has had knock-on effects through the industries infrastructure, credit, training and implementation of regional policies. Therefore, through AFSTA’s work throughout the private seed industry, they are establishing themselves as an effective partner to the seed policy makers and shareholders to provide advocacy for their members, whilst helping to find solutions to the industry’s constraints. Consequently, AFSTA is working to provide the support framework necessary to foster an environment of success across Africa’s seed trade industry. To champion the interests of the private seed companies of Africa, AFSTA is working to provide

32 | Endeavour Magazine

visibility for their members. As part of this, they include all their members in the directory listing in their African Seed Magazine which is provided yearly to encourage networking and sharing of knowledge and experience towards the betterment of the industry. As part of their role in facilitating a global network, they rotate the annual conference venue to highlight and learn from the diverse cultures across the continent. Their annual conference provides a platform to showcase and integrate new members into the association, giving new members the opportunity to speak on the role they play in the continent’s network of seed suppliers. Overall, AFSTA provides a variety of services and advocacy initiatives to help promote the private seed industry across Africa. Working with all its members, crucial stakeholders, and governmental figures, AFSTA has successfully promoted the development of the seed sector towards a more stable future that supports both the seed enterprises and the farmers whom they supply. By acknowledging the constraints throughout the industry, they are well-equipped with the knowledge and expertise to handle and resolve many of these issues throughout the network. Therefore, AFSTA is leading the way as a governing body that strives to provide a unified voice across the seed industry and promote the African seed industry towards the global expansion of the seed trade across the world.

DEVELOPING CHILEAN AGRICULTURE The Chilean Seed Association chevron-square-right https://www.anproschile.cl/ envelope-square (+56) 9 8888 8557

The Chilean Seed Association

Chile has a rich and profitable seed industry which has positioned the country as a key figure in global seed markets for its exports. The country is a leading exporter in the Southern Hemisphere and the third in the world for agricultural exports. Therefore, The Chilean Seed Association (ANPROS) was established to be a reliable partner for the country’s seed production. Through its work to support, develop and promote Chile’s seed industry, ANPROS has spent the last 63 years positioning Chile as a reliable and crucial player in global seed production markets.

F

ounded in 1959, ANPROS is home to 74 members which include producers, distributors, marketers, researchers, and a variety of other organisations which are related to and represent 98% of the seed industry and its operations in Chile. The core operations of the association are divided into various committees which work to develop individual sectors of the Chilean seed industry toward the united goal of developing Chilean Agriculture. ANPROS works to tackle all matters concerning seed activity on national and international stages, whilst ensuring that throughout this they are contributing towards the sustainability of the industry as a whole. The committees are vast and span a range of topics including, specific seed development and production, regional development, intellectual property, marketing and trade procedures to establish ANPROS as a leader in the seed trade industry. The Phytosanitary Committee is responsible for regulation across the industry and advises on phytosanitary matters, the various daily queries regarding Chilean regulations and the global seed industry. This committee is part of the International Seed Federation, which allows ANPROS to develop in line with global seed regulations. However, the committee is involved in regional associations too, including the Seed Association of the Americas (SAA) to develop the industry on a localised level. ANPROS’s work through this committee establishes the Association into regional and global markets to bring in international standards of regulations, whilst aiding in the unique development of Chilean agriculture. Therefore, working closely with the Phytosanitary Committee is the Commercialization Marketing Committee, which is working to help the distribution of regulated seed towards its end markets. The committee work to ensure the interests of all involved partners in the seed trade industry, to place Chilean seed as a leader in its respective field.

By positioning Chilean seed as regulated, high in quality and easily available via good trade links, which are established by the COMEX and Logistics Committee, it continues to develop the industry’s investment into Chilean agriculture and the economy. To provide high-quality seeds, ANPROS has a range of committees which focus on various seed types to ensure a future of continued crop success. 36 | Endeavour Magazine

The Chilean Seed Association

The first of these looks at corn, focusing on all aspects of its growth from seed to end markets, to optimize its production and highlight the ways that technology can aid in the production of corn seeds. The committee’s central function is to optimize the member companies’ operations and strengthen their relationship with the network of seed growers across the country to benefit specifically corn seed production. Similarly, the Canola Committee was established in 2003, to organise the companies of the association which produce canola seed. The committee, which now consists of 12 members, works to regulate, supervise and optimize the production and performance of canola seed across the region.

Following this, another committee under ANPROS is the Vegetable Committee, which looks at the regulation of sown products to ensure that throughout the operation there is varietal purity of the seeds. The committee’s main objective, much like the corn committee, is to position ANPROS as a coherent association which is working towards improving the seed production industry across the country. They believe in good communication across the associated companies, which will increase transparency across the productive sector. One way they are highlighting transparency and communication is through its geographic information system which was developed to highlight contamination, and instances where contamination could occur in the future. By developing this, the Association helps to build a strong and profitable sewn crop industry with its members. Towards the future of sustainability, ANPROS is crucially aware of the role globalization and climate change play in the agricultural industry. Seed industries are constantly exposed to the entry of new pests and diseases. Therefore, the Biotechnology Committee are working to understand and advise the board of directors on the production, regulation and policies surrounding seed production, whilst actively participating in international discussions regarding genetically modified crops. The committee was created in conjunction with the Agricultural and Livestock Service, the Procedures Manual of the Live Plant Organisms and Modified Propagation. The committee is seeking to protect the environment whilst maintaining the phytosanitary heritage of the seed produced across the association. Consequently, 38 | Endeavour Magazine

their work to establish standardised procedures for the importation, production, and evaluation of genetically modified material, whilst ensuring the security of regional Chilean crop production, gives the association a competitive advantage to the industry in this region. Furthermore, ANPROS leads the way with its insulation system which has been recognised globally for its tool to spatially order the production of seedlings to ensure high-quality, genetically pure and successful crops are produced. The technology was developed by ANPROS and now is managed and supervised across its uses in the industry. It provides crucial knowledge to farmers to help them organise seedlings, seed beds, the use of soil and the compliance regulations with biosecurity to ensure that the seeds are produced throughout the Chilean seed industry to a high standard. This technology was adopted by the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA) in a collaboration which incorporates information from AGROMET, an agrometeorological network, into the ANPROS Insulation System to provide seed companies with agroclimatic knowledge to again increase the efficiency of crop production. The combined system

Developing Chilean Agriculture

provides ANPROS members, and international seed markets, with innovative technology to help in decision-making regarding irrigation, planting, pollination, and phytosanitary issues. The system ensures that throughout the Chilean seed industry, ANPROS can ensure the profitable, high-quality and efficient development of seed to ensure its sustainability and stability towards a growing seed industry. Overall, ANPROS focuses critically on various sectors of the seed industry by dividing into committees which work with the seed members to develop the industry towards a high standard of regulation, efficient production, and global status of the Chilean industry. The Association has established itself through its work and development of its Insulation System to leave a legacy of efficient seed production not just across Chile or South America, but across the world as the technologies continue to be adopted globally. Therefore, ANPROS is leading with innovative ideas and close attention to all facets of the seed industry by working with its members towards smaller focused goals which come together to benefit the agricultural development of Chile as a whole.

as the industry has entered what is traditionally a seasonally quieter period”. This comes as the previous, and third cycle of the year, was valued at $540 million. Anglo American had begun to see a return in demand, however with a slight decrease in sales, Al Cook adds in the press release on the fourth sales cycle announcement that “rough diamond demand was also influenced by ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty and a slower pace recovery in consumer demand from China than was widely anticipated”. The company hopes to again see positive consumer demands for diamonds and to steadily increase its rough diamond sales in line with the previous cycle. A key mining venture for Anglo American in South Africa is in the mining and processing of PGMs across multiple sites. Anglo American has been supporting the global potential for a hydrogen economy for quite some time, as it quickly recognised its role in enabling the shift to greener energy and cleaner transport for a more sustainable future. As the leading producer of PGMs, Anglo American is providing materials for a variety of markets with a diverse range of applications across many industries. The vehicle market sees fuel cell electric

vehicles on the rise which provide zero emissions powertrain technology, which is particularly well suited to heavy duty long range and fleet vehicles. Furthermore, the alternative energy world has Anglo American as a key leader in providing PGM which is an essential metal used in the cleaning of vehicle exhaust emissions and as a catalyst for electric fuel cell technology. Finally, jewellery is also a key market for PGMs, particularly platinum, as it is widely used in jewellery due to its strength and purity. This is where Anglo American’s FutureSmart Mining™ technology is so crucial as it is continuing to invest in energy reduction and more energy efficient opportunities throughout its operations. By switching to low-carbon energy sources, Anglo American is developing its projects towards carbon neutrality targets. As a company, it is looking beyond just the customers it facilitates with PGMs, but towards the future markets to promote sustainable and diversified growth across all aspects of activity. One key project Anglo American is implementing this push towards sustainability is

These services allow the region to develop exponentially as a core hub for health care, which is reiterated by Dr Kongshiek Achong Low, Chairman of Medcorp Limited, that “Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and by extension the world, share a culture of fusion, the integration of individually unique groups and identities that incorporate to make life easier, creative, and more productive. Similarly, so too is the culture at Medcorp; we are all individuals; however, collectively as Medcorp Limited, we stand together as a group and tell our story. Critical to our story is why we exist, what we believe in, and where we are going as a hospital and as a leader in this community of healthcare providers”. Consequently, we can see that behind Medcorp is a real sense of personal touch to ensure that throughout every medical service, treatment, or appointment; the staff, nurses and doctors are working tirelessly to ensure that every patient is receiving the best treatment possible. Under Medcorp Limited are 4 hospitals which are working as part of the Medcorp team to provide premier healthcare facilities across the region. One

of the hospitals under the Medcorp umbrella is St. Claire Medical which is the oldest private hospital institution in Trinidad and Tobago, which has a 24/7 accident and emergency department and the first fully equipped state-of-the-art ICU in the region’s private sector. The hospital has a 60-bed capacity and believes in the motto that “Life is Precious, Choose the Best”. With medical wards, maternity wards, a dialysis unit, 3 operating theatres, a radiology and imaging department, a catheterization lab, and a pharmacy; the hospital is on a mission to be the main provider of tertiary healthcare services in the Caribbean. Medcorp established GoodHealth Medical Centre (GHMC) to provide medical services where “GoodHealth is wealth, invest in your health” is its central message. GHMC was established to provide a range of preventative care services in the form of Executive Health Assessments. These assessments check patients over for a variety of potential conditions but focus on the eyes, ears, lungs, heart, kidney, vascular system, and gastrointestinal tract. For Medcorp, a pillar of its role is to help with preventative and pro-active healthcare treatments and check to help patients to maintain good health. With all services facilitated by a multidisciplinary team of highly trained medicine consultants, general practitioners, nurses, phlebotomists, and admin staff; GHMC can provide excellent customer services through

its same-day surgeries, 2 operating theatres and private consultancy service. Furthermore, it has an onsite medical lab, which is the only internationally accredited lab in the Caribbean. As part of Medcorp’s focus to be a leader for treatment options, they own the Brian Lara Cancer Treatment Centre of Trinidad and Tobago, which was established in 2007 to provide cancer patients with the best treatments with a team of experienced oncologists. Offering a range of advanced cancer therapies, diagnosis, staging, multidisciplinary team decision-making, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the treatment facility is able to offer to give its patients the best chance of beating cancer. The treatment facility is usefully located next to the National Stadium in Port-of-Spain and has two treatment bunkers which administer treatment, examination rooms, physics and treatment planning suites and a simulation imaging suit for accurate treatment planning. The Brian Lara Centre, which was named after a world record-holding cricketer from Trinidad and Tobago, leads the way across the region in providing crucial cancer treatments and examinations to ensure that the disease is treated to the best of their ability.

30 Years of Health Investment

The final hospital under Medcorp is its Doctor’s Radiology Centre, which is a premium outpatient facility for radiological investigations. The radiology centre has been in operation for over 30 years and is a stand-alone facility, now under Medcorp, which provides digital plain X-rays, fluoroscopic examinations, digital mammograms, bone densitometry and ultrasounds. The centre allows for x-rays to be carried out without the need for a pre-planned appointment and can help medical practitioners to better investigate ailments regarding the abdominal, pelvis, breast, skin lumps, thyroid, and legs. The Doctor’s Radiology Centre has introduced a new machine from Siemons, called The Digital Mammomat Inspiron, which is a top medical machine that has helped to keep the centre at the forefront of new technology by reducing wait time compared to traditional film x-ray imaging, and so ensures more scans can be conducted to reach a wider potential of patients in a more efficient way. Furthermore, the centre is home to the Hologic Discovery, a bone density scanner which combines the proven clinical value of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) measurements and vertebral fracture assessment, which looks for conditions such as

osteoporosis. The Doctor’s Radiology Centre shows how technology, and its continual development, is crucial for placing Medcorp at the forefront of the medical services industry. We can see throughout Medcorps operations it is always concerned with ensuring that the patient is receiving the best treatment possible. They are continually developing and working to strive for greatness, from opening the first private sector 24/7 accident and emergency department in the country, which had only previously been available in the public sector, to today 4 hospitals under the Medcorp name. Therefore, on Medcorp’s 30th birthday, it is no surprise that they are leading the industry with excellent medical services and healthcare across Trinidad and Tobago. At the heart of Medcorp is a keen desire to help and provide a reliable solution to healthcare services, and this isn’t missed throughout the continuous development of healthcare across the region.

THE WORLD OF

Mad Bee Honey For centuries, honey cultivated by beekeepers in the Black Sea region and the Himalayas has been used to treat a range of medical ailments from hypertension, diabetes, arthritis or even a sore throat. In small doses, the honey produced in this region is said to have a profound effect on the human body, but what is this effect, how is it produced and why does the honey sell for such a high price?

58 | Endeavour Magazine

T

he bees in places such as Nepal are pollinating plants across the landscapes to produce honey which has a slight hallucinogenic effect on the human body. This honey is produced in areas where there are a high number of rhododendron plants. Rhododendrons contain a group of neurotoxic compounds called grayanotoxins, and so when bees pollinate these plants their resulting honey contains traces of grayanotoxin. Therefore, in places where there are widespread rhododendron plants, for example in the mountainous regions of Nepal, the bee’s honey contains much higher levels of this toxin. The resulting honey containing these toxins is reported to be redder in colour, with a slightly more bitter taste than the honey many of us know. The most notable effect of the honey is euphoria, light-headedness, and dizziness – causing it to be called ‘mad’ honey by many. In low doses, the honey is said to have a slight hallucinogenic effect on the human body, however, if we were to consume it in high quantities the honey can cause serious complications including vomiting, loss of consciousness and even death. Therefore, in low doses, it has been used for centuries to treat

a range of medical issues in countries across the world where this type of honey can be found. Although, as there is no way to control the amount of rhododendron pollen consumed by the bees, cultivators can never be sure of the potency of the resulting honey, so the effects can vary from season to season depending on the flowering of the rhododendron plants. Therefore, while the medical benefits of the honey cannot be guaranteed, the honey is, however, still used and sold across the world in very low doses for a variety of uses.

The ‘mad’ honey is known to be one of the most expensive types on the market, initially due to its hallucinogenic effect but also due to the extremely demanding conditions to retrieve the bee’s raw honey. Rhododendrons typically grow in high altitudes and so the hives of bees which produce the honey with high amounts of neurotoxic compounds are also found high in the mountains. Therefore, it is both difficult and dangerous to retrieve the honey, as hunters must climb down the side of the mountains amid swarms of bees to get to the hives. The hunting for the hallucinogenic

honey extends back for centuries and so gathering and cultivating it has become a tradition. For many locals their communities have been sustained by agriculture for generations, however, many people have left their rural villages to work abroad, so hunting for honey remains a way that many villagers near these hives can reconnect with their ancestors. Overall, the production and cultivation of ‘mad’ honey is a natural phenomenon which is both intriguing and dangerous. Whilst, the potential mood and pain effects are desired and effective for many, the retrieval and potential risks that it comes with makes it a dangerous game - but one that many locals are willing to take. Consequently, many tourists travel across the world to experience the effects of the honey, and many more seek it out to purchase it online. However, we can’t help but wonder whether the bees feel the hallucinogenic effects of the pollen too…

INVESTING IN MEXICO Unilever Mexico chevron-square-right www.unilever-northlatam.com phone-square +52 (55) 1105-4002 envelope-square Foods.sac@unilever.com

Unilever Mexico

Unilever is an expansive brand and one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies. The overarching company is home to more than 400 brands, including many we all know, love, and probably use every day. Globally, Unilever has a network spanning more than 190 countries worldwide. However, one of the current key developments for Unilever is in Mexico where they are investing in new facilities and sustainable programmes to expand their network, whilst providing jobs to support the local community in the process.

U

nilever Mexico operates in 11 countries across the Latin American region, working with 9000 collaborators to facilitate Unilever’s manufacturing and distribution needs. The Mexican division of Unilever has a clear purpose to make sustainable living commonplace. Their strategy for delivering this is through achieving consistent, competitive, profitable, and responsible growth. We see these values coming into play in the announcement of a new manufacturing facility to be built in Mexico. The new manufacturing plant in Nuevo Leon comes as part of a $400 million investment in the country over the next 3 years. The plant will be located in the border state of Salinas Victoria, on the outskirts of Monterrey and will manufacture beauty and personal care products. Furthermore, it will provide 1,200 new jobs both directly and indirectly to the local community.

The new plant is set to open next year in 2024 and will bring a crucial expansion for Unilever in the country not far from the border to the United States of America. This investment in Mexico comes as many big brands are investing in facilities there to bring supply chains closer to their final destinations. Consequently, Mexico is a key centre of exports for Unilever to other nations, and so the new plant will be the 5th in the country, adding to the 4 plants which are currently in operation under the Mexican division of the company. The Unilever brand is known for its sustainable initiatives with 100% of its energy used worldwide coming from renewable sources, and 67% of its raw materials used across its range of products are sourced from sustainable farms. Unilever Mexico maintains this high level of sustainability throughout its work ensuring that no waste ends up in landfill from its operations. A key focus for Unilever Mexico is sustainability, focusing crucially on the initiatives towards the conservation of soil. To do this Unilever Mexico has established a set of principles focused on ensuring the regenerating agriculture in the country by aiding farmers and small producers across the companies’ value chain. By supporting soil nutrition, the capture of carbon, water care, restoration and regeneration of the land, Unilever Mexico can support the biodiversity of the land. Therefore, the company is working beyond its manufacturing 68 | Endeavour Magazine

facilities to ensure that the land around its facilities and across the region is cared for. Unilever Mexico is ensuring that, through its work in Latin America, it is leaving a lasting positive impact beyond its production lines.

Furthermore, over the last 15 years, Unilever Mexico has achieved key advancements in their sustainability programmes and certified production. Now, Unilever Mexico has achieved an 80% sustainable supply across all its key raw materials, and a 100% sustainable supply in its soy, sugar, and cocoa production. Furthermore, 91% of the 13 main vegetables and 96% of the paper and cardboard used by the company are also sustainably sourced. Therefore, throughout Unilever Mexico’s operations they are meeting the sustainable goals of the overarching company, and as a division are leading the way across Mexico for facilitating the manufacturing of crucial health and beauty products in the most sustainable way possible.

Overall, Unilever Mexico continues to expand to meet the needs of a growing health and beauty industry. The investment into the country by Unilever is set to broaden its possibilities and bring with it key jobs to serve the local community. It is clear that even with the expansion of the industry and the need for more manufacturing facilities, Unilever Mexico is still focusing on ways to lead the industry toward sustainability, by promoting the necessary support of the country’s agricultural development.

FUELLING MALAYSIA’S ECONOMY Malaysian Palm Oil Board chevron-square-right https://mpob.gov.my/ phone-square +603-8769 4400

Malaysian Palm Oil Board

As one of the world’s largest palm oil exporters, Malaysia leads the way in refining and processing palm oil to meet the growing needs of the population. As of 2020, Malaysia accounted for 25.8% of the world’s palm oil production, and 34% of its exports respectively.

T

he refining of crude palm oil goes back over 50 years as a response to the government’s initial call for increased industrialization in Malaysia, and so the emergence of refineries allowed for a wide range of processed palm oil products to be produced across the country. Therefore, the palm oil industry plays a crucial role in the Malaysian economy, and so the Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB) was established to enhance the well-being of the growing industry and provide continued development, research, and services across the palm oil refining process.

Established in 2000, MPOB is a government agency entrusted to serve the country’s palm oil industry. Their role is to help promote and develop national objectives, policies, and priorities towards the success of the Malaysian palm oil Industry. MPOB was created following a merger of the Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM) and the Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority (PORLA), to create a combined board which would render the services more effective, whilst offering better focus on the role of palm oil in national and international markets. MPOB’s vision is to become a Nobel Laureate-producing research and development institution which aims to provide leadership and development towards a highly diversified, value-added, globally competitive, and sustainable palm oil industry. MPOB plans on enhancing the well-being of the Malaysian palm oil industry by focusing on how technology, plantation management practices and integrated farming initiatives can be implemented to develop the industry and increase the income of palm oil producers in the country. Currently, there are two types of oil produced from oil palm trees, one from the flesh of the fruit and the other from the seed/kernel. These oils undergo several processing and filtering operations to produce the finished oils to meet the requirements of the industry. However, in an industry such as palm oil processing, there are often concerns over sustainability, so MPOB is implementing research and development facilities which focus on enriching the local communities in which it operates, whilst working towards environmental conservation goals. Furthermore, MPOB focuses a considerable amount of its 74 | Endeavour Magazine

operation on research and development; whether this be to provide key information on the global industry, to develop sustainability initiatives, to work with national and international organisations, or to implement high-standard training programmes all to ensure the continued development of the palm oil industry.

As part of the continued research efforts, MPOB has recently announced that it is doing research to understand how to better modify crops and the role genetic modification could play in the future of Malaysia’s palm oil industry. MPOB announced that the current production of palm oil in Malaysia is not derived from any kind of genetically modified mechanism, however, its Biology and Sustainability Research Division is looking into it. The use of genetically modified crops could help increase crop yield and palm oil production which would provide benefits down the supply chains, as the crop would theoretically be able to produce much higher quantities of palm oil per hectare.

However, public reception to genetic modification is not always favourable. Instead, genome editing is more widely accepted as proven by the public reception of the soybean. Ultimately, If genetic modification or genome editing is found to be possible and effective, it could have significant impacts on the future of palm oil production across not just Malaysia, but the globe. Overall, the palm oil industry in Malaysia is vast as it leads the way as one of the most crucial exporters of palm oil worldwide. MPOB’s research provides crucial development to the industry as it grapples to keep up with the demand for palm oil in a variety of markets from cooking to cosmetics or even in biofuel. MPOB has spent the last 20 years successfully building the industry towards a strong and secure future, that focuses on research and development to maintain palm oil production in line with its growing demand. Consequently, MPOB continues to find solutions to ensure that the production of palm oil has the most effective output, whilst working to promote the protection of the environment throughout its operations.

From its flagship product that focused on reliability and superior operability, HCM has developed over the years expanding its product line to encompass a range of mini and large excavators, wheel loaders and crawler cranes. The knowledge and experience developed since its beginning have allowed the company to continue to evolve with the ever-changing needs of its customers. Therefore, HCM’s mission is to actively develop its machinery to provide its customers with technology and services which generate value towards a more prosperous land and society.

HCM sees the future of construction sites as a place where safety and productivity are paramount and believes it plays a crucial role towards this through the mutual exchange of data about people, machinery, and the construction industry. By looking closely at this data, HCM can ensure that equipment and its sensing systems are top quality to collect real-time data about the site’s location, operational status, worker location, biometric information, and changes to terrain to help its customers constantly assess their project’s construction sites. Therefore, HCM developed ZCORE®, which is an innovative system platform to enable its equipment to recognize, make judgements and then execute its operations. The development of ZCORE® allows for operations to move away from the need for operators on the construction site and focus on operations which are led by data-driven technologies. As the world moves ever towards a more sustainable future, the electrification of construction machinery becomes ever more in demand. Whilst it is not a key goal of HCM to electrify the industry per se, the company are seeing it as part of its role to achieve zero emissions and play its part in building a carbon-neutral society. HCM has been developing electrically powered machinery for a long time with their first electric hydraulic excavator being produced in the 1970s. 80 | Endeavour Magazine

Sustainable Construction for the Future

This development has seen a steady increase over the years, with compact battery-operated excavators being produced with built-in lithium-ion batteries. In recent years, HCM released their batteryoperated electric excavator model ZE85, which is an 8-ton class lithium-ion operated excavator which can operate for 3.4 hours from a full charge. This was a crucial development as not only does the life of the battery compete with others in the market, but it can be fully recharged in less than an hour improving productivity on site. The shift towards zero-emission options was particularly pertinent in Europe following the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, as companies across Europe began accelerating their measures towards carbon neutrality by 2050. Initiatives across Europe have been working to implement electric vehicle adoption, including in Oslo where HCM’s ZE85 was first introduced to help shift Norway’s public construction work towards a future of no emissions by 2025. Following this, the country plans

to implement this throughout all construction work by 2030. Therefore, the demand for developing machinery that is both efficient in its projects and produces no emissions is the inevitable push toward the future for HCM.

HCM exhibited at Bauma 2022, an international construction machinery trade fair in Munich, a variety of its new batteryoperated excavators including the 2, 5, 8 and 13-ton classes which are promoting this global push towards electrification - the latter two developed in partnership with its subsidiary European dealer Kiesel. HCM also presented its power bank which has a mobile battery designed for rapid charging on construction sites. This power bank provides a solution for construction sites to effectively charge HCM’s equipment on site and consequently extend the production time delivery of its machinery. HCM plans to sell these power banks in a set with its electric construction machinery.

82 | Endeavour Magazine

Overall, HCM is constantly developing its construction machinery towards a future that is safe and sustainable. They have adapted their products over the years to a point where they are leading the way with battery-powered machinery which is meeting the ever-growing demand for sustainable options throughout the construction industry. It is HCM’s innovations and attention to the shifting world which allows them to stay ahead of the curve providing crucial equipment, supported by their own battery power banks, towards the future of construction equipment.

GROWING THE TOURISM INDUSTRY WITH DUTY FREE Middle East and Africa Duty Free Association

Middle East and Africa Duty Free Association

When you go on holiday or on a business trip, one of the best parts is walking through the duty-free section in the airport and having a look at all the companies’ offerings at a favourable duty-free price. The role that dutyfree companies play in the financial development of the tourism and travel industry is therefore expansive, as they play a crucial role in the economic success of the industry. The impact was particularly noticed in the Middle East and Africa, and so the Middle East and Africa Duty Free Association (MEADFA) was established in 2001 to create unity among the region’s duty-free industry and promote its continued success towards national and global markets. .

L

ocated in the Dubai Airport Free Zone, MEADFA is a non-profit organisation which aims to bring recognition to the region’s duty-free industry, whilst raising awareness of the region’s contribution to the travel and tourism industry. As an association, it provides its member companies with representation to encourage strong and profitable relationships between these companies, government organisations and key tourism/travel shareholders. Consequently, MEADFA is continually working to bring members and key figures of the industry together, whilst establishing a set of quality standards which it has implemented throughout the association to ensure a level of high-quality consistency for every member company.

One way that MEADFA is ensuring the continued success of the industry across the Middle East and Africa region is through training programs. The Association has established a Training and Development programme which is available and encouraged among MEADFA’s members. The programme, which to date has had more than 600 delegates attend, offers a range of courses including leadership, negotiation skills, sales, and marketing – to name just a few. These programs are designed to develop each member’s company, whilst working to progress the industry towards a standardised level of quality and consistent growth. Furthermore, as part of its continued work to foster success, MEADFA announced just last year that it is launching a range of awards to recognise the great work members are doing towards being recognised as world-class travel and retail specialists in the Middle East and Africa region. President of MEADFA, Mr Sherif Toulan said in a press release on the awards that “Our objective is to focus on the dynamics of the region and acknowledge those who have made significant contributions to the development of the travel retail industry in the Middle East and Africa”. He continues “The award committee encourages companies to nominate themselves and to highlight their outstanding contributions in a variety of business areas”. The awards cover a variety of categories including the Best Retailer Award, Best Marketing Strategy of the Year Award, Sustainability and CSR Award, and Customer and Supplier Award. All these awards allow the member companies to put

themselves forward, however, the final award is the Lifetime Achievement Award in which MEADFA honours an outstanding member who has made a remarkable contribution to the overall travel retail environment. The nominated member will have shown strong leadership whilst supporting its people and the overall industry, whilst also making efforts towards sustainability, strategy, and culture. The results are announced at the annual MEADFA conference to recognise their work and advocate for the continued growth and development of the industry towards excellence.

The MEADFA conference is held once a year and welcomes over 500 delegates from across the multinational and regional companies under the association. Attendees come from more than 32 different countries, which allows for the venue to be moved every year to highlight a new region annually. By continually moving the conference venue, it allows for a unique opportunity to showcase the MEADFA network to celebrate and acknowledge issues facing the travel and tourism duty-free

Loacker was founded in 1925 and went from being a local patisserie to a global brand. An international company which even after three generations still maintains a family-run business model. Values and beliefs such as high-quality and genuine products, sustainability, and a people-centric approach are at the heart of its constant growth. Packaging is at the heart of Loacker’s sustainability policy. It pursues two main goals: recycling packaging and eliminating unnecessary packaging. Since 2022, the company has focused on increasing single-material, recycling ready, plastic packaging and eliminating unnecessary packaging along the entire value chain, maximising sustainability without compromising product quality and freshness.

industry in specific regions. The next conference is set to be hosted in Ghana, which serves as a gateway to Africa and is home to one of the world’s fastestemerging economies. The conference will provide key opportunities to develop and learn from the culture and traditions of this part of the continent to better understand the travel and tourism industry. Consequently, the conference allows for crucial networking, advocacy, and recognition by providing a space where critical players in the industry can work together for its continued development. MEADFA has been working for the last 20 years to bring unity to the region’s duty-free industry and is leading the way in providing training and networking opportunities to ensure that the industry continues to develop. As an Association it works to foster an environment of improvement, to encourage every member to continue to strive for greatness and bring the Middle East and Africa duty-free industry to the global stage. Therefore, MEADFA leads the way in uniting the duty-free industry, with an infrastructure that is built towards continued success and achievement.

The South Tyrolean company has launched five Loacker specialty selections in the Duty Free channel in outer pouch made of FSC®-certified paper: Minis Mix, Best of Moments, Gardena Minis Mix, Patisserie Selection and Tortina Selection. The paper pouch reduced the plastic packaging content of the entire packages between 56% and 63%, compared to the previous packages with plastic-only outer pouch. The total weight of the packs was reduced between 20 percent and 7 percent compared to the previous all-plastic packs. Last year, the paper pouch line generated about 60 percent of duty-free channel sales, suggesting a growing consumer focus on environmentally friendly packaging.

Transforming TANZANIAN PORTS

Tanzania Ports Authority chevron-square-right https://www.ports.go.tz/index.php/en/ phone-square +255 211 7816 envelope-square dg@ports.go.tz

Tanzania Ports Authority

Established in 2004, the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) is both landlord and operator of a system of ports that serve the importing and exporting of cargo across the Tanzania hinterland and the land-linked countries of Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Rwanda, Malawi, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Their role is to manage and develop the regional maritime trade and logistics services to a place of excellence both in Tanzania and in the global port industry.

T

PA works as an overarching authority across six ports, to manage the diverse system of sea and inland waterways on Tanzania’s mainland. Their role is to establish and coordinate these systems and develop their facilities to maximise their cargo potential. The major seaports under TPA are Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara, with the smaller seaports of Kilwa, Lindi, Mafia, Panagani, and Bagamoyo and the lake ports of Victoria, Tanganyika and Nyasa all under their authority. Equipped with a range of machinery and equipment to handle a range of different cargo, the TPA offer a range of services to help manage and process containerized, dry bulk, break bulk and bulk liquid cargo. They also offer harbour facilities to ensure the safety and efficiency of ships coming into their ports; this includes pilotage, tugging, mooring and unmooring services. As a company, TPA leads the way in ensuring that all the needs of the port are met, and are continually developed to ensure they are efficient, safe, and running to a professional standard.

As of 2023, one of TPA’s ports, The Port of Tanga, has been undergoing renovations to upgrade its facilities and was set to host the largest ship it had ever facilitated to date just a few months ago. The port was built in 1914 to serve the commercial and agricultural needs of northern Tanzania. As part of an ongoing development project at the Tanga port, TPA has been expanding the port’s ability to deal with larger cargo ships, and as of March this year, they welcomed their first mega ship into their port. As part of the phased renovation process, the TPA expanded the entrance to the channel, which has now been completed allowing much larger vessels into the port. The second phase in the construction is for a new 450km long berth which will allow for a dramatic increase in cargo capacity to reach 1,201,000 tons per annum. However, they are predicting a 3 million target cargo volume per year by the completion of the second phase of the project. By increasing the capacity of the port, larger ships can now dock at the Tanga port to increase the efficiency of cargo handling by reducing the number of days needed from 5 days to just 3 depending on the size of the cargo. TPA is responsible for the Dar es Salaam port, which is the principal port of Tanzania with a current 96 | Endeavour Magazine

capacity of around 14.1 million metric tonnes of dry cargo and 6.0 million metric tonnes of bulk liquid cargo.

Totalling 2,600 m in depth and with 11 deep water berths it handles 95% of Tanzania’s international trade and is strategically placed to serve the freight linkage to take goods between East and Central Africa, to the Middle and Far East, Europe, Australia, and America. TPA is implementing the Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Project (DMGP) which will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the port, to accommodate larger vessels. The project is planned to modernize the port by deepening and strengthening berths 1-7 and the RORO terminal. Furthermore, they plan to eventually dredge the entrance channel, turning circle and harbour basin. Then they plan to strengthen and deepen berths 8-11 and construct a new terminal jet. Therefore, we can see that TPA is constantly improving and developing even its largest port to ensure it can increase its capacity to be a leader in port control

across Tanzania and allow for efficient handling of cargo at a much larger capacity. Overall, TPA leads the way in managing, aiding, and developing the ports of Tanzania. As authority over the ports, the government-owned company oversees the imports and exports into Tanzanian and ensures they are continually developed to meet the ever-increasing demand. Therefore, through their work, they are allowing new types of cargo and goods to be transported in and out of the country through their ports whilst maintaining a high standard of processing to position them as a leader for port authority services.

Over time the role of the KBA has evolved and broadened, now to include its role in developing the industry towards economic growth. The KBA facilitates their expanding role by working with the government and developing sector regulations set by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). Now the KBA has a new ambition statement which summarises its role in the financial and banking industry: ‘One Industry. Transforming Kenya’.

The KBA currently represents 47 members across the country, all of which are held to a high and professional standard of banking, so that Kenyans know that the banks under the KBA governing body are ones to trust. KBA continues to ensure the safety of its customers by running various campaigns to ensure financial safety awareness is always a priority. One prominent campaign is their ATM safety awareness campaign ‘Kaa Chonjo!’. The campaign seeks to empower its consumers with the secure use of online, mobile and card transactions. Therefore, as an overarching company KBA are ensuring that the customer’s security and faith in the KBA members is a key priority. The campaign hopes to contribute towards alleviating fraud throughout the financial sector. Furthermore, they ensure the safety of transactions for their banks by enhancing the security of transaction channels to reduce the risk of them being subjected to fraud. KBA continues to innovate the transaction channels of its customers in a recent upgrade of the Automated Clearing House (ACH) system to the ISO 20022 Standard. The upgraded system will provide opportunities for banks and other financial sector players by facilitating the efficient transfer of payments. It will provide a platform for global interoperability of payments, which will innovate services and reduce time on cheque clearing considerably. This upgrade comes as part of KBA’s strategic plan between 2019 and 2023 to facilitate more efficient and affordable financial services through advancing its technological innovations.

KBA aims to be the voice of banking across Kenya by being a leader in innovation throughout the financial sector. They plan to do this by reinforcing the industry’s ability to be a primary driver of economic development as they innovate their operations towards economic success through research and analysis. The KBA has established The Center for Research on Financial Markets and Policy which aims to research and providing key commentary on critical policy matters that impact the financial markets in Kenya. The research centre communicates with key financial market experts, the banking sector, and the policymakers in Kenya towards a future of success.

E

QUITY GROUP, in March 2022, embarked on a transformative mission to proactively contribute to global progress through a private sector-led initiative in East and Central Africa. This ground-breaking endeavor, known as the ‘Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan,’ goes beyond profit-focused thinking and instead leverages the private sector’s resources and capabilities to tackle pressing global challenges. The plan recognizes the need to rebuild regional strength and capacity following the disruptions caused by COVID-19 and the Rus-

sia/Ukraine conflict. By prioritizing the financing of in-country manufacturing and regional supply chains, Equity Group aims to mend the fractures caused by these crises. The plan also aims to drive economic recovery and growth while creating employment opportunities for the youth and facilitating market access for local producers. Equity Group plans to allocate up to 2% of the combined GDP of the six economies it operates in to finance the private sector. This financial support is being provided through a combination of short-term overdrafts,

medium-term loans, and credit facilities requiring long-term project and development financing. The goal is to empower 5 million borrowing micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and 25 million individual borrowers over the next five years. During the launch of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, Dr. James Mwangi, the Group’s Managing Director and CEO, highlighted the immense potential of this initiative. He envisioned the 5 million borrowing businesses, mainly MSMEs, creating 50 million jobs—25 million directly and an equal number indirectly—leading to cohesive

business ecosystems that foster synergistic growth. Equity Group’s Plan goes beyond profit and commits to catalyzing socio-economic transformation in the region. Inclusivity is a central consideration, ensuring that no one is left behind. The plan also prioritizes sustainability and governance to protect the environment while advancing social and economic development. To implement the Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan effectively, six strategic pillars have been identified. These pillars form an interconnected framework focused on empowering MSMEs and expanding opportunities in Food and Agriculture, Manufacturing and Logistics, Trade and Investment. The Plan supports MSME integration into value chains, harnesses knowledge, science, technology, and innovation, encourages social impact investments, and considers environmental factors. By fostering a coordinated and productive natural resource ecosystem in agriculture and extractives, the Plan aims to drive higher productivity and throughput. It recognizes the potential for Africa to leverage its natural endowments to expand productive capacities

and manufacturing capabilities. By creating cohesive primary sectors integrated with Pan-African productive capacities, the Plan aims to foster demand complementarities across regional blocs. Trade and investment are crucial components of the Plan, offering expanded market access and facilitating factor mobility. By providing broader markets, capital, technology, and skills, the Plan aims to enhance the global competitiveness of African products and services. Empowering MSMEs through integration into value chains will drive inclusive domestic value chains and demand complementarities. The Plan also emphasizes the transformative power of technology, envisioning a tech-enabled economy. By facilitating online presence for businesses, the Plan aims to accelerate connectivity, foster innovation, and drive economic growth. Furthermore, it also focuses on youth and women as primary drivers of opportunities in the real economy. Through strategic partnerships, such as the Young Africa Works Initiative with the Mastercard Foundation, the Plan aims to equip young people with financial literacy, entrepreneurship training, and digital skills. Credit guarantee facilities will complement lending to ensure equal access to credit and mitigate default risks. Equity Group’s Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan presents a bold step towards harnessing the private sector’s potential to address global challenges. With a long-term perspective that goes beyond individual profit-making, the Group aims to create a sustainable and prosperous future for East and Central Africa. Through inclusive economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social transformation, the Plan seeks to redefine the private sector’s role and make a lasting positive impact on the region and the world.

OVER 30 YEARS OF RESPONSIBLE MINING Cámara Minera de Panamá chevron-square-right http://www.camipa.org/ phone-square info@campia.org envelope-square +(507) 393-8388

Cámara Minera de Panamá

Cámara Minera de Panamá (CAMPIRA), or The Mining Chamber of Panama, brings together companies, shareholders, and suppliers throughout the metallic mineral and non-metallic sectors in Panama, to promote the country’s mining industry towards social, economic, and environmental success. CAMPIRA is critically concerned with promoting the mining industry towards sustainable development, by working with mining companies to ensure the efficient and responsible use of mineral resources in the country.

C

AMPIRA wants to develop the economy, and Panama’s stake in the world of mining development, however, is critically aware that this kind of development can only take place sustainably. Therefore, CAMPIRA facilitates the sustainable economic development of Panama through a range of practices and standards to benefit the country with the economic profitability of sustainable mining.

Panama is home to an abundance of mineral resources due to its geographical location, with key copper and gold mineral deposits. The country is currently only home to one operational metal mine, Cobre Panama, which is world-renowned for its metal production and so has a significant impact on the economy of Panama. CAMPIRA sees Panama as a key place of development, which has already seen key success in the service sector, and so believes that with such a rich mineral resource the country can take advantage of the opportunity that mining presents the country. CAMPIRA believes that mining can close the productivity gap, promote entrepreneurship, and bring new innovation to the country through new mining projects. CAMPIRA has been bringing together the public, private and social players in the mining sectors since 1990, to reduce the risks associated with mining, chiefly concerning the environment, whilst enhancing the benefits generated by mining activity. The benefits of mining, particularly in Panama, are positive fiscal developments and the creation of many high-quality jobs to bring economic success both locally to those working at the mines and nationally across Panama by reinforcing the economy. Furthermore, as Panama is located next to the sea on both sides it makes it an ideal candidate for mining metal exports, and so the development of mining in this region will benefit Panama’s economy even further as it can easily export the mined material out of the country. Consequently, CAMPIRA is working on a project to bring together companies relating to mining, to bring a united learning environment and communication to develop the mining industry in Panama towards global success. The companies include those involved in inputs, machinery, engineering, processing, by-products and copper products to ensure that throughout the supply chain from

mined minerals to end products the companies across Panama’s mining sector are working as one fluid machine. The Cobre Panama mine makes a perfect example of the opportunities that can be seen economically, as by consolidating the mining industry into mining clusters, it can promote the development of local suppliers, demand for human capital and infrastructure. Therefore, through CAMPIRA’s work, it is promoting the development of new mining projects to bring strong investment into Panama’s mining sector.

Currently, the metallic mining sector is contributing toward institutional development, with the adoption of better standards and practices. These standards and practices can then positively impact the nonmetallic industry that CAMPIRA is hoping to develop in the country. Consequently, every development and project that CAMPIRA is working on helps to open a new path of shared success in the country at both a national and community level.

Ultimately, the development that CAMPIRA is hoping to see from the mining industry in Panama will contribute significantly towards the sustainable development of the country and its social, environmental, and institutional dimensions. Overall, CAMPIRA is working to promote the best practices and standards across the sector to ensure that the mining industry is contributing toward the country’s environmental and economic development. CAMPIRA strongly believes that communication across the industry is the best way to promote its development, as this communication can reduce the risks facing the industry whilst enhancing the benefits of shared knowledge across the sector. Furthermore, through CAMPIRA’s aim to bring together all those involved in Panama’s rich mining industry, it can continue to make efficient and responsible use of the natural resource at their disposal. Therefore, as an organising body, CAMPIRA is keenly concerned with the environmental impact that mining has on the world but is working to ensure that operations across the industry are working in the most sustainable and responsible way possible towards the expanding future of Panama’s mining industry.
