Crewsaver Crewfit 180N Pro When it comes to lifejackets , Crewsaver’s main objective is to make sure they can get as many people to wear them as possible. This isn’t by scaring people with horror stories, but by ensuring the life jacket is unobtrusive and unrestrictive enough that it will become second nature to throw it on and forget about it. After all, a lifejacket is only going to work if you’re wearing it! Thehe Crewfit 180N Pro is the first of its kind, andprovids safe, stylish, comfortable and affordable safety to the everyday recreational boater. This ergonomic boating lifejacket was designed using 3D technology to increase comfort levels, and you will be surprised how much stuff has been squeezed into this slim jacket. This lifejacket is ISO 12402-3 (150N) approved with superior buoyancy that keeps your body higher out of the water than regular jackets. The integrated,
4
high-volume 3D bladder design comes with a peninsula chin support and increases buoyancy to 180N, and keeps your airway well clear of the water, even in choppy conditions. The jacket features an attachment point for an S20 AIS unit so the jacket and will automatically inflate if thrown overboard. This lifejacket is
available with a choice of firing mechanism; automatic or manual. It is worth noting that the automatic does also come with a manual pull. If the manual only version is selected, then it will not automatically inflate and will need to be manually activated by the user when needed. The Crewfit 180N pro does not come with a light as standard but can be fitted with the Crewsaver CSL very easily by the user and at minimal cost. The indicator will show green if the components are armed and screwed in correctly, if there is any red showing then both these aspects need to
be checked. If you’re using the automatic version make note of the capsule expiry date so you know when to replace. The 180 Pro features a soft loop D-ring (on the harness version) for attaching a safety harness, forward pull side waist adjusters for a precise fit, and it is compatible with MOB Lifesavers. As PPE goes, this is one of the cooler looking pieces; it feels durable, it is beautifully put together and extremely comfortable to wear. There is nothing there that doesn’t need to be, and you can move around as freely as if it wasn’t there at all - an excellent piece of equipment at an affordable price.

Vibram Furoshiki
I have been a dedicated barefoot runner/natural runner for over five years, and in a situation where I can’t go totally barefoot I opt for minimalist shoes for good reason, I should add! Our feet are accustomed to the heel-to-toe drop with the design of the
6
modern shoe from a very early age. Most running trainers replicate this with an
average 8mm heel to toe drop. You see about 60 years ago sports shoe manufactures decided that they knew better than nature, and had us all running in a shoe with an elevated heel instead
of the commonly used flat plimsole! The natural runner argues that there is no need for the drop or the supports in these shoes. We prefer 0mm drop, little cushioning and room for the foot to move ie the barefoot feeling. It is argued that natural running provides a number of benefits over using heeled running shoes - it strengthens muscle, tendons and ligaments in the foot and allows you to develop a more natural gait. You will have a higher cadence, shorter stride, and your legs will absorb the impact instead of the shoe. In some cases this can prevent injury, and it is the most natural way for us to run with positive health effects. There are a number of manufacturers that offer natural running shoes, but most models are quite heavy and still look like a standard running shoe. Vibram, on the other
hand, have been leading the way with their world renowned soles, making minimalist shoes with their five-finger range – a type of shoe that is light, has a 0mm drop, provides limited cushioning and is wide enough to allow for comfortable and natural movement of the foot. These are my preferred natural running shoes however, my biggest issue with them is that they are not quick and easy to put on. Each toe has its own slot and this can be challenging to slip on particularly in transition on a triathlon with wet feet. The Vibram Furoshiki offer something entirely different, however, and I have been very keen to trial them. Rather than using the five-finger design, they employ the Japanese idea of cloth wrapping. This new design means that the Furoshiki shoes are very light, don’t hinder your foot’s natural movement, and provide
a grippy sole. When I first ran in them, I ran without socks and found my toe nails rubbed hard against the shoe, as they are designed to fit glove-tight to the foot. Once I popped on socks and ran in them they were totally different and felt great. We natural runners want to feel as close to barefooted as we can, and in this regard the Furoshiki are brilliant. They are light and unobtrusive, but also offer protection. Their unorthodox appearance means that I field lots of questions from fellow runners, but no more than running barefoot or in my Vibram five fingers. These are not for every runner, but a barefoot runner will love them. Their minimal size and weight mean they are great for use as a travel shoe, for water sports, yoga, martial arts, gym foot wear - anywhere you need to go with protection. RRP £85.00

DataColor Spyder 5 Studio The Spyder 5 Studio kit from Datacolor is a cool collection of tools that ensure your photographs are captured perfectly, your editing equipment is providing you with true-to-life colours and your printing is on point. The Spyder 5 studio has been designed by professional photographers for professional photographers and includes the SpyderCUBE with protective pouch, the Spyder5ELITE colorimeter with USB, the SpyderPRINT spectrocolorimeter with base, and the SpyderGuide, as well as a protective hard case, a couple of anti-bacterial wipes to get you started and a welcome card with a software download link. So, here is a quick overview of the most important devices in this kit, starting with the SpyderCUBE: The CUBE uses common tools found in colour managed application such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. Simply take a reference shot with the SpyderCUBE under each lighting condition, adjust it, save it, and then apply this to your entire series of photos. You can hang the device in the shoot or attach it to a tripod mount. The SpyderCUBE is constructed of ABS Cycoloy, a hybrid resin that is fade proof, durable and shock resistant. Next up is the Spyder 5 ELITE. This
8
clever little device ensures you have colour accuracy throughout all your monitors and projectors, calibrating for perfectionists with a dual mode operation, wizard and expert mode. The room light monitor determines the ideal monitor brightness for you to see the fine shadows and highlights in your photos, which ensures that your editing matches how your final prints will look. You can access a before and after visual of your calibration results with your own images on full screen, allowing you to focus on the most important details of your image. This device guarantees colour accuracy with the only patented sevendetector optical engine, and is compact and portable, with a built-in lens cap and tripod mount.
http://bit.ly/2rA8q6d Pros Complete kit SpyderCUBE captures scene white balance and exposure data Spyder5ELITE calibrates and profiles desktop and laptop displays SpyderPRINT controls brightness, white point and tone response for all printers, inks and papers Carry case The Spyder PRINT lets you print and measure colour patches and create custom RGB printer profiles for perfect print matching. It is compatible with lots of different types of printer including photography, fine art and post card printers, as well as others.
The extended grey targets let you include and measure precision-grey and near-grey patches, allowing you to enhance the quality of tinted and black and white prints. The software can be used with either individual colour patches or strips. This may all seem a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get your head around the gear, it is fairly easy to use, and ensures consistent and true images from shutter to edit to print. RRP ÂŁ349.99

ThinkTank Airport Roller Derby The Roller Derby is part of ThinkTank’s Airport series. It has been designed to be as smooth and easy to manoeuvre as possible, for minimal muscle fatigue even when fully loaded. This spacious case has a large gear profile (12.6” W x 18.5” H x 5.5–7.5”). For example, it can hold a Canon 5DMIII with 70-200mm f/2.8 mounted, 1DX with 24-70mm f/2.8 mounted, 16-35mm f/2.8, 90mm TS-E, 2x Extender, 580EX or a Nikon D700 mounted to 70-200mm f/2.8, D810 mounted to24-70mm f/2.8, 14-24mm f/2.8, 105mm f/2.8 macro, 50mm f/1.4, SB900. Alternatively, it can hold two standard DSLRs with lenses attached or one gripped DSLR and one standard DSLR, both with lenses attached, with six to seven standard zoom lenses or strobes. On top of this, it will also house a 15” laptop (10.5” W x 14.5” H x 10
1.0” D) and 10” tablet (10.5” W x 10.3” H x 0.6” D) in dedicated padded pockets. The Roller Derby meets international and US carry-on requirements (exterior dimensions 14” W x 22” H x 9.0” D), but it might be too large for some budget airlines, so always check with the airline before you fly. This case is chock full of useful features: there is a lock and cable to secure the lockable zip and/or to tether the bag, which sits in its own little pocket so you always know where it is. There is a seam-sealed rain cover included, a bottom handle for easy overhead lifting, a tripod mount and water bottle pocket on side, and a
two-position locking handle that extends to 39–42”. The Roller Derby has three ways of rolling - upright at your side, back wheel tilt, or side wheel tilt - making it versatile and comfortable when travelling. The wheels are high off the ground and provide a smooth and satisfying movement, and they can be replaced for extended life. The Derby has a zip pocket on top for quick access to your wallet or mobile phone and a rapid access side pocket for travel essentials, and there is a reinforced back panel for increased durability. On the inside, there are zip pockets for batteries, CF cards, filters and other small accessories, and the reinforced dividers can be personalised for your needs. RRP £335.50

Bont Cycling Vaypor+ The Vaypor+ from Bont tries to combine luxury with strength when designing this technical cycling shoe, featuring the strength of a kangaroo leather upper, soft cow hide internal lining and Bont Cycling’s carbon technology to ensure the highest strengthto-weight ratio and lowest stack height. This shoe is available in white, black, blue, green, brown and orange, and in standard, wide, narrow and Asian fit as well as a Full Custom option. The Vaypor+ features BOA’s IP1 Dual directional dial with quick release functionality to gain a precision fit and allow for a quick release. The upper, made from kangaroo leather, provides a flexible but tough shoe. This leather is well known 12
for high strength whilst retaining a light weight. The Vaypor+ has a unidirectional monocoque chassis with a matt finish, and has been upgraded to improve grip and assist cleat adjustment. There is plenty of ventilation, with integrated air vents on the front
bumper that directs airflow into the shoe, along with a perforated upper and tongue to allow your foot to breath as much as possible. The Vaypor+ has anti-stretch technology in the form of an added material, similar to the characteristics of Kevlar, between the upper and lining that prevents the shoe from stretching over time. This layer also assists in pedalling by maintaining a supportive structure over the top of the foot in the upward

part of the pedal stroke. This shoe is comfortable, with a closed cell memory foam that will not soak up water and a TPU Toe protector that protects the front area of the shoe from wheel rub. The Medial Longitudinal Arch Support helps to prevent the over-pronation of feet, one of the main causes for incorrect tracking of knees, which in turn can result in knee injuries and even back pain. The Vaypor+ shoes are anatomically shaped with an anatomical heel cup to keep your foot in the most efficient position and minimise injury risk.
The base of the shoe is moldable which means all stiff areas of the shoe can be molded in a standard oven. That said, you do not need to mold your shoes if they fit you straight out of the box. To mold your shoes, remove any cleats, laces or cleat mounting screws and innersole before molding. Failure to remove the innersole can result in it becoming deformed by the heat. Pre heat the oven to 70C/160F. Place the shoe in the oven for 20 minutes. Let them cool a little and test the shoe temperature with your hand before placing your feet in the shoes.
Tighten the straps and allow to cool. If you have any lumps or bunions on your feet or if there are any areas causing discomfort, while the shoe is hot you can use the round end of a screwdriver to press out any part of the boot. You can heat mold the shoes as many times as you like. Overall, we found the Vaypor+ an exceptional, technical shoe - the anatomical design helps you to perform at your best and the BOA IP1 dials allow for quick and precise adjustments. RRP ÂŁ349.99

Zuca Pro Travel Bag Since 2004, Zuca have been producing bags to help keep travellers organised like never before, with multiple individual pouches and pockets to arrange your gear. The Zuca Pro Travel has a pocket for everything that meets FAA specifications for carry-on baggage, with dimensions of 19.5”H x 10”W x 13.5”D (always check individual airline specifications for carry-on dimensions). Here is a quick breakdown of the colour coded pouches: there are five in total, and they stack on top of each other like draws two red (5”x 8”x 10.5”), one blue (3”x 8”x 10.5”), one orange (2”x 8”x 9.5”) and one green (3”x 8”x 10.5”), plus a clear TSA-compliant toiletry bag (1 quart). Why there are two red pouches whilst the rest are different colours, I do not know - surely it makes things more confusing than having five different colours, but what do I know? The Pro Travel comes 16
with a matching Travel Cover for some added protection if your bag gets checked-in and helps to deter thieves away from all those inviting zips. This case comes in a whopping eleven different colour combinations mixing in with the aluminium frame that comes in either black or silver. The frame is strong and is rated to safely support up to 300 lbs so, weight depending, you could sit on it whilst you wait to board or one of the other hundreds of reasons you end up
waiting around in an airport. However, this frame has its downsides - I find that handling the case is more difficult with it, as there are lots of hard corners to bang into knees or shins, and the finish on some of the edges is quite rough, making it uncomfortable to handle at times. The frame also makes the case really heavy; at just shy of 4.5kg when empty, once full that can quickly add up to a large amount of weight to lift above your head in the cabin. The 4” shockabsorbing polyurethane wheels provide a smooth and silent ride, and the large size means you aren’t at risk of scratching the bag on unsmooth surfaces. The Pro Travel
also has a 41” telescoping handle and lots more pockets around the bag, including an expanding waterproof pocket in the door. The bag holds 32L in total. Being a little OCD around the edges, I love all the individual colour coded pouches and organising pockets. However, being a massive klutz, I can see myself doing either someone else or myself real damage with the frame, but then I’m left torn again because I love to be able to park my backside at any opportunity. I think this is a niche product, but if you regularly travel to conventions or you are a make-up artist or any profession that involves lots of small accessories, this could be the answer to all your problems. RRP £295
http://bit.ly/2r4IPPy Pros Lots of organised storage Smooth, quiet 4” wheels One clear TSA-compliant toiletry bag Frame supports 300lb Transparent and colour coded bags for quick reference Unique stacking pouch system

Buggypod Lite When you are expecting a baby, there is an entire house full of stuff you will need to get. One of those big-ticket items is the pushchair, and chances are you will take your time researching the best pushchair to make sure you have the Rolls Royce of prams. Everything is great until two to three years later and along comes baby number two: do you upgrade to a two-seater at more expense when you know your toddler won’t use it all the time, or give in to carrying one or the other? The Buggypod Lite is a brilliantly innovative idea that allows you to keep your old pushchair and pop out an extra
18
seat for when your toddler gets tired legs. This award-winning add-on takes an initial set-up by installing
clips onto the side of your push chair, but it isn’t difficult, and there is a handy drop-down tool on the website that allows you to select the brand and model of your pushchair to check it’s compatible before you buy. We were testing out the Buggypod Lite with the Silver Cross Pioneer. The initial installation was easy enough - it is just a case of clipping the
seat onto the pram’s frame. When not in use, it folds away with a catch to keep it in place and the wheel relocates to help keep your original pushchair as slim as possible. The Buggypod Lite can carry up to 18kg and is suitable from six months old. It weighs 3.3 kg and adds 41cm to the width of your pushchair when open, 14cm when folded. It is fully adjustable to make sure it runs smoothly alongside your pushchair, featuring a fivepoint harness and fabric footrest. There is a two-click folding action to let you know when it is in position, and it detaches easily to pop in the car. I absolutely love the idea of this product, but for the price I was a little disappointed. When compared to the Silver Cross mothership,
it seemed a little basic and i feel that some extra padding or rain cover could have been included as standard. For £114.95, you get an occasional seat but don’t expect the luxury of a full blown pushchair. Expect to make some compromises. The added width can make it difficult to manoeuvre through doorways and it doesn’t recline. One of the tradeoffs of having a compact, folding side seat is a less padded seat and a fabric footrest. For all the optional extras (which are basically essential items) such as a comfort liner, rain cover and sunshade, you are looking at an extra £78. RRP £114.95
http://bit.ly/2sf1M6s Pros Easy to install and pop open Innovative idea Fully adjustable Five-point harness
Cons Little Luxury No liner, sunshade or rain-cover included Fabric footrest Difficult to manoeuver though some doorways

Carradice Super C Handlebar Bag Wilf Carradice kick-started his company nearly 80 years ago by making saddle bags and panniers. He discovered that a bag he had created for himself was superior to those already on the market, and throughout the ‘40s and ‘50s his bags became the number one choice for hard riders and clubmen. The Super C Handlebar Bag has been designed to keep all your essentials safe and protected from the weather, whilst also keeping them close to hand when you’re cycling. By keeping some of your gear at the front of the bike, the bag also helps to distribute weight around the bike more evenly. At 1056g, it isn’t particularly light,
20
but it has a generous capacity of five litres, with dimensions of 26cm wide x 16cm high x 14cm deep. The Super C attaches to your bike via the KLICKfix system, which makes it easy to put on and take off, and has an optional extender to clear computer mounts or lights. There are two side mesh pockets: the mesh feels durable, but at the same time it
doesn’t have any give to it, so it is difficult to get small things out of the bottom. On the inside, there are two internal organiser sections and a zipped internal pocket. The main body is made from Waxed Cotton Duck which is 100% waterproof. On top of the bag, there is a large detachable clearview map case - you know, for those old fashioned drawings that used tell people how to get places before Google Maps came along and sent you to the wrong place. The handlebar
fittings are available for up to 32mm in diameter. There is a handy shoulder strap for when you jump off your bike, a detachable light bracket on the base, and the bag has Hi-viz reflectors for extra visibility on the road. The Super C Handlebar Bag is a robust bag that’s built to last in Lancashire and is super weatherproof. I would prefer the side pockets to have more give, and to maybe have some more pockets inside the bag to keep things organised. The Super C isn’t the best looking bag, and is best suited for those looking for function over style. RRP £70

JLab Audio Epic Bluetooth Wireless Earbuds
The Epic Earbuds from JLab provide you with ten hours of wireless sound. The battery life will get you through a weeks’ worth of work-outs before it needs recharging, and the secure fit will hold fast during a run or the gym. The Epic features JLab’s proprietary Memory Wire over-ear hooks, cable miniclips and six gel tip sizes that all combine
24
so you can find a precise fit. The Memory Wire comfortably shapes around the ear and helps keep the earbuds secure whilst you are active. The mini cable management clips can be used to secure any loose wire away from your neck - if you are anything like me, the tiniest thing can become the biggest irritation whilst on a long run or a particularly hard session at the gym, and the last thing you need is wire rubbing against your sweaty neck. The Epic uses C3 (Crystal Clear Clarity) technology and 8mm drivers deliver a satisfying sound quality. The base is a little on the light side, but the mid and high tones are good enough to get you through a workout. Weighing in at only 15
grams, the EPIC Bluetooth Earbuds are comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and the 45-degree cord-to-earbud angle ergonomically fits ears. The Epic connects via Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX Technology with a range of 30ft (9.1m). We found the connectivity a bit hit and miss - it would start to cut out at 5-6ft and couldn’t handle me walking out of the room very well at all. However, the main purpose of these earbuds is to stick by you through a workout; they are 100% splash-proof, sweat-proof and washable with an IPX4 rating. The Epic also feature a universal mic and track control, allowing you to make phone calls, turn the volume up and down or activate SIRI. There is a neoprene, Eco-leather
smartphone case, 3.25”W x 6”H x 0.75”D, that can be converted to a belt clip for easy phone access while you’re using the Epic Earbuds. The Earbuds aren’t going to blow your mind, but they are durable and will make a good gym buddy. However, for this price range, there are better earbuds available. RRP $79.99

Vaude Shuttle Comfort The Vaude Shuttle Comfort child carrier is available in red, black and marine, and is suitable for day trips and even hiking. It can be individually adjusted and has practical pockets to make your journey as comfortable and stress-free as possible. The shuttle is constructed from 100% Polyamide, coated in 200 D Mini Ripstop Polyurethane, and the main fabric is 100% Polyester. It can be used with a child from 105cm or 18kg up to 22kg. The Tergolight suspension system and the load distributing hip-belt create a snug but even fit without creating pressure points, and provide a steady and secure ride for both adult and child. There are adjustable foot loops to help the child feel sturdier and to prevent pins and needles, as well as front and back handles ensure TÜV certified safety. As for pockets, there is easy-access storage for snacks, toys or water. The Shuttle features a zip pocket on the hip belt and two good sized storage compartments on the top and bottom, which all add up to 25L. I would have liked to see a few mesh pockets on either 26
side, just for some easy-to-see storage options, although all the key attachment straps and handles are a bright orange for quick reference. Sadly the sun/rain canopy, large rain cover and washable head rest are all sold separately, which is disappointing at £240 – it feels as
though they then want to squeeze even more money out of you for what are pretty much necessities when it comes to hiking. The Shuttle Comfort is, as the name promises, very comfortable. It is soft and spongy in all the right places, but it is weighty at 3100g. It will swallow up a fair bit of cash as well as car boot space, and it also gets quite warm with all that padding. The bottom line is if you have enough cash to get the accessories on top of the initial purchase price, and will use the child carrier regularly for long outside adventures, it could prove a worthwhile investment. Thinx Ladies and gentlemen of a nervous disposition, please turn away now - we are about to tackle a taboo that affects half the world’s population and in some countries, keeps girls from attending school every single month. Yes, we are talking about when Aunt Flo comes to visit, when the painters are in or when you are suffering from girl flu; whatever you like to call it and no matter how much society pretends they don’t exist, periods are very real and at times a massive pain in the neck (and lower abdominal area). Three friends who were sick of working around tampons, sanitary towels and cups decided to revolutionise the way we deal with our periods by creating a range of underwear that can be worn without any other sanitary products. Each pair holds a different amount: the Hiphugger, Hi-Waist
28
and Boyshorts hold two tampons’ worth, the Sport holds one and a half tampons’ worth, the Cheeky holds one tampon’s worth and the Thong holds half a tampon’s worth, so you can select your favourite style to match you flow. All Thinx underwear is available in either black or beige (yes, you can wear beige on your period!)
We received the Hiphugger and Cheeky to look at more thoroughly. They work by using four bits of tech that makes them anti-microbial, moisture wicking, absorbent and leak-resistant. Penclic K2 Penclic are a Swedish company who produce products to make working with a computer as efficient and comfortable as possible, creating computer accessories that are ergonomically designed around the requirements of our bodies. RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) is a common work-related injury that is often caused by using your muscles and joints in the wrong way time and time again. The K2 keyboard aims to alleviate physical stress on your arms whilst helping to create extra space in your work space. The K2 is a mini keyboard - its slim 5mm profile allows you to free up more desk space for things like three-day old coffee cups and cats (or is that only my desk?). This keyboard is compatible with all operating systems that support 30
HID 1.1, including Windows XP or later, Mac OSX version 10.1 or later and most Linux/ BSD flavours. There is no extra software or driver installation necessary, so after the initial charge you are ready to go. However, the Mac operating system does not support all of the K2’s special functions. The keys are quiet and tactile, with a scissor key design that is a pleasure to use. The K2 is powered by a AAA 1.2V NiMH Recharging battery (everyday use lasts approximately two months before
charging is needed) and will recharge via USB. If you are caught without your charger, you can use an LR 03/ AAA/1.5V Alkaline none-rechargeable battery, but you must remember not to recharge the keyboard with these batteries in, as it could damage the device. The Nano USB-receiver 2,4GHz, wireless reaches a maximum of five metres, which is more than enough to roam about the office. Like many keyboards, the special functions are activated by holding the Fn key, followed by the correct number, and Num Lock actives the numpad functions. The K2 also features an LED indicating battery status. It is available
in black or white and in six language layouts: UK, US, FR, DE, CH and Nordic. We found the K2 a good looking and tactile keyboard with a good battery life and a slim profile. This flat profile creates a more natural angle for your hands and wrists, helping to protect you from injury. RRP ÂŁ54.99

KitSound Parallax Bookshelf Speakers These bookshelf speakers have built-in amplification with a choice of connectivity and a sleek, stylish design that will compliment your home. This compact kit provides you a good quality sound without the need for an amplifier or loads of cables cluttering up your space. The Parallax kicks out 60 watts of power and the custom crafted DSP (Digital Signal Processing) delivers a clean, even and layered sound that is more than satisfactory for this price range. With a thick bass, rich mid-tones and clear high-tones, it will prove suitable for most genres of music, but it might lack a bit of punch for bass-heads. The Parallax is versatile and will connect to even your most ancient of formats: it will connect to MP3 players, cassette players, Discmans and 32
even turntables with Bluetooth compatibility, as well as smartphones and tablets. Pull out those embarrassing first singles on cassette or find your guilty pleasures on Spotify - no song is safe. It isn’t just songs these speakers are good for, however - pair them up to your TV and they will seamlessly add a new dimension to movie night. The Parallax is simple to set up; simply connect the two cables and it is ready to use. The included remote will allow you to adjust the bass and treble for more control over
your sound quality, as well as all the other functions you could need. These speakers are constructed with a four-inch glass fibre cone woofer and one-inch silk tweeters housed in a glossy black wooden case that feels solid and wellbuilt. The only thing I would like is a slightly increased Bluetooth range - it claims to have up to ten meters, but walking from the living room to the kitchen (in a classic terrace house) was enough for it to start cutting out. All things considered, these are good quality speakers with a minimal design and versatile connectivity; excellent value for money. RRP ÂŁ150

Altberg Tethera The Tethera boot has a beautiful, classic look about it, in a rugged brown leather. It is classified as a 3-Season hill walking boot, suitable for the Lakeland Fells and the Scottish Hills. The Tethera‘s upper features an Alpine Style design and is made from one-piece leather, 2.4-2.6mm, in a naturally water repellent full-grain European hide. This water-resistant leather is backed up by a Sympatex waterproof lining on the inside, which keeps out water whilst forming a breathable membrane around the foot to help prevent you from overheating. It also features a padded, integrated tongue that is soft and tactile. The midsole provides support and protection to the foot without being too 34
ridged, which allows for a more natural walking gait whilst remaining tough enough to handle rugged terrains. You are in good hands with a Vibram Masai/ Micro sole, which has a full rubber abrasionresistant rand and a shock-absorbing micro mid-layer between sole and foot. The Tethera is available in sizes 7.5-14 in men’s and 3-8.5 in women’s, including ½ sizes, and in five widths: XN, N, Med, W, XW. They are lighter than they look, at only 736g in a size 9. The Tethera boots are extremely comfortable straight out of the box;
they hug the foot and ankle without being too constrictive, and they are nicely insulating, so your toes will stay toasty warm during the cold days. However, on warmer days things can get a little too hot inside, as despite the Sympatex lining, there is next to no ventilation. The Tethera feel light on your feet and put a spring in your step, with enough grip on rocks to have you jumping about like a mountain goat. If you are looking for a traditional hiking boot that puts comfort first, then the Tethera might be right for you (as long as your feet don’t get too hot on warmer days.) RRP £199.99

Lumie Zest
Since 1991, Lumie have been researching and producing lights to tackle the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (or S.A.D.) The Zest can be used as a wake-up light for a more natural start to the day, and it can also be used as a light therapy device to give you a boost in the winter months or if you are stuck indoors. Your body is hardwired to wake up to the gradual rise of the sun, but due to our busy modern lives this very rarely goes hand in hand with
36
when you need to get up. The wake-up light gradually brightens your room to simulate the sunrise and eases the production of sleep hormones like
melatonin, increasing wake-up hormones like cortisol to make the transition from sleep to awake easier. Another benefit of using a wake-up light is its ability to help regulate your sleep cycle and boost your mood, energy levels and productivity for the rest of the day. You can choose between a 15 or 30-minute sunrise
to wake you up gradually, adjust the final brightness level to find your perfect sunrise and even add an optional alarm beep for belt and braces. To use the Zest as a light therapy device, there is a timer for your sessions, a selection of light levels from 20% to 100% (the brighter the light the shorter amount of time your session will be, with the recommended treatment time being 30 minutes at full brightness) and it will deliver 10,000
lux at 25 cm. Its other features include a snooze function, a fully dimmable display and a power failure back-up to ensure your alarm will always go off when you need it. The Zest is compact at 13 x 15 x 5cm, so it can fit on your bedside table or travel with you to help treat jet lag. However, it is just shy of 400g, so it isn’t the lightest of things to carry. We also found that it’s a little top heavy - even with the magnetic stand
we manged to topple it over when reaching for it in the dark. We liked the overall design of the Zest, but would like to see a few more functions to make it perfect. For example, it would be nice to be able to set seven days’ worth of alarms and a sunset feature to help you get to sleep - then it might be closer to offering value for money. A cleaner, more stylish design would also be welcomed. RRP £125

Withings Steel HR The Steel HR is the first activity tracker of its kind, with a heart rate monitor that can offer a long-lasting battery life of 25 days before it needs recharging. It comes with a stylish, classic watch body that compliments your gym outfit as well as your evening wear. The Steel HR has both an analogue dial and digital display, and a soft silicone strap with a traditional metal buckle. It is available in 36mm or 40mm, black or white, with a whole host of alternative straps, including leather, to suit your style. The HR monitor allows you to see your heart rate at a glance during workout and then provides a breakdown of your overall performance with the use of the personalised report that can be accessed via the companion app. You can access how long you spent in each heart rate zone, giving you a better understanding of the effectiveness of your workout. The HR automatically kicks in when your heart
38
rate increases, or it can be activated on demand. It will also automatically take readings throughout the day to provide results for when you are active and at rest. The Steel HR can automatically recognise when you walk, run, swim and sleep, and even features ten new activities including table tennis, volleyball and dancing. You can also teach the Steel HR activities via the Health Mate App.
The easy-to-read digital screen displays heart rate, number of steps, distance and calories burned, as well as allowing you to set alarm times and smartphone alerts. The smart alarm will try to wake you at the best time during your sleep cycle, and you don’t have to worry about taking it off for your morning shower, as it is water resistant up to 50m. Overall, the watch works well and its software is user friendly, but it’s not quite perfect. I had some fogging issues when using it in the shower, and the charger is quite possibly the most poorly designed thing I’ve come across - it is fiddley, doesn’t connect and is more of a balancing act. That aside, the Steel HR
seems accurate and looks great, so as activity trackers go this is a good choice. “Whether you’re an athlete or simply trying to lose a few pounds and get a better handle on your health, knowing your heart rate can help you better understand your overall health and reach your fitness goals,” said Cédric Hutchings, VP of Digital Health, Nokia Technologies. “With the wealth of insights it provides and the extended battery life for a health watch of its type, Steel HR truly is the first of its kind.” RRP £189.95

Bell Jar Light I live with a person that I affectionately call a collector but is, in reality, a hoarder in training. It all started as a child with Kinder Egg toys and has progressed as an adult into vinyl records and creepy ‘vintage’ toys and curios. As you can imagine, his eyes lit up when he saw the Bell Jar Light, as his head flooded with items he could display in it. If you have ever found yourself in the home décor corner of Pinterest, chances are you may have seen a classic bell jar stood in a corner, perhaps housing a Poe inspired crow or an old camera. The Bell Jar Light is the world’s first and only bell jar to have a builtin light. The main dome is hand-blown glass on a painted wooden base, with a plastic stand on which to place
40
your prized possession. The dome is 200mm in diameter and 250mm high. It works off a USB powered, UK/EU/USA/ Australia adaptor that comes included, and has an on/off switch halfway up the fabric coated cord. It features cool-running LEDs with two diffusers that provide a wide and even illumination over the whole base. The wood used for the base is recycled
from old cut-offs, which is better for the environment. However, when it arrives, the Bell Jar does come with a load of plastic polystyrene foam to protect the delicate dome, which is obviously not so good for the environment at all. That said, it is difficult to think of another form of packaging that could protect the glass on transit. At £100, the Bell Jar Light isn’t cheap, and for this price I think the quality of the base should be improved. The plastic cover comes away easily and the glass sits loosely
on the base, which when living with a klutz is never a good idea. Once you have an item in the jar it does look cool with the dramatic up-light, and your ‘treasure’ immediately appears more valuable than it probably is. So, will my partner be shelling out hundreds of pounds to display his favourite items in the Bell Jar? I think even he would draw the line there! RRP £100

Xlab Torpedo Versa 500
The Torpedo Versa 500 from Xlab is a carbon fibre aerodynamic aerobar hydration system - in other words, a super swanky water bottle that you can attach to your bike for easy access. The Torpedo is compatible with Garmin bike computers and multisport watches, and it also comes with the Aero Computer Mount so you can use it with non-Garmin computers. You can either raise the computer mount up to tuck in an extra bottle for race day or lower it down for a standard bottle to provide you with a better view on training days. The Torpedo features an on-the-go computer tilt adjustment that allows you to tilt the
42
screen whilst you ride to avoid glare from the ever-changing sunshine and riding direction.
It has a new SuperSealed, no-leak bottle design, and with the dolphin breather valve in the top of the bottle it makes sure liquids stay inside. The bottle easily attaches to the bike by clipping onto the aerobar extensions, which eliminates the need for extra zipties, rubber bands or electrical tape to hold the system in place. It fits 22.2mm diameter
aerobar extensions, but Xlab will custom make (for a price) special oversized clamps if you need a larger size. The 16-layer unidirectional carbon mount has a no-rattle, no-bounce system which works well and keeps the bottle stable throughout the ride, and it can be adjusted to the widest range of cockpit configurations (70mm150mm center-to-center) without compromising the aerodynamic profile. It accommodates up to 20° of aerobar extension rotation, the new 2-Strap system allows for more mounting positions than previous 4-Strap models, and its compact and minimal mount design requires 80mm less space than
previous Torpedo models. The large valve and two straw positions make it easy to drink from and refill, and the bite valve decreases the chance of swallowing air when taking a drink. There are two lid styles - a solid refill lid for adding power, tablets and fluid and the slotted refill lid for adding tablets and fluid. The Torpedo Versa is an excellent drinking system, designed to provide you with quick and easy hydration without having an impact on your riding position and having a minimal effect on your aerodynamics. Coffee Gator Canister Whilst on a recent weekend away, we had just arrived in our holiday home after a five hour delayed flight and running off 1 ½hours sleep. One of my fellow travellers had been repeatedly grumbling about how desperate he was for a coffee – however, when I brandished an ancient looking jar of instant coffee under his nose, he looked at me like I had just offered him my sweat-ridden hiking socks in a cup of boiling water. The point I am trying to make here is that just because all coffee has the word “coffee” on the label, doesn’t mean it all tastes the same. Once the beans have been roasted, it’s a race against time to turn them into a cup of coffee before they lose their flavour. Before you pluck your favourite brand from the shop shelf it has already gone through a long and difficult process to get there the least you can do is look after the finished product! The Coffee Gator Canister is a messfree way to store your
44
coffee and keep it fresher for longer. The Gator holds 14oz/408g of ground coffee or 16oz/453g of whole bean and is made from premium quality stainless steel. Fun fact - coffee beans naturally emit CO2, but if the beans are exposed to the CO2 for too long, it can start to deteriorate their quality and impact on the flavour. The Gator has a built-in one-way valve on the lid that allows the CO2
to escape whilst at the same time preventing air and light from entering and damaging the beans. There is also a handy wheel on the lid that lets you keep track of the expiry date - you could just remember or put a sticker on the jar, but let’s face it, this looks so much better. I think if I waved this canister at my coffeesnob friend, even if it was full of supermarket basic instant coffee, he would probably accept it to share in its good looks alone (please do not dirty the inside of this canister with instant coffee). Anything that can sustain my favourite coffee beans’ flavour and reduce waste gets the thumbs up from me. RRP £24.99

SuckUK Teddy Bear Lamp Ever look at your bedside lamp, then look at your cuddly toy (I know you have at least one) and think, “Why hasn’t anybody mashed these two things together?” Well no, neither have we, but that is exactly what SuckUK are best at - thinking outside the box (usually so far out of the box that the box is a dot on the horizon.) On first inspection, this looks like something that Sid from Toy Story may have put together in his bedroom…in fact, on second inspection, it still looks like this. My partner was immediately taken with the headless bear and insisted he was cute - I remain unconvinced. The lamp is surprisingly well made; 46
the shade is a beautiful glossy and silky black with a golden lining inside that contrasts nicely with the black fixture and framing. The bear itself is super soft and fluffy in a lovely golden colour - it’s almost a shame the lampshade gets in the way of giving him a big cuddle. He is nicely balanced and sits quite happily no matter how
you have the lamp tilted. The lamp comes with interchangeable plugs to be used in the USA, UK and the rest of the world. The light itself is thankfully a safe, built-in LED that only looks like a bulb, so it doesn’t kick out the heat of a regular bulb ( I don’t think I could handle the sight of a headless teddy on fire). Just to be on the safe side, the shade is fireproof and the bear is fire retardant as well as being safe for children over 36 months (of course, this does not cover nightmares). The
light produces a warm glow that isn’t particularly bright, so it doesn’t work well as a reading light. This is very much a novelty decorative piece, and at £100 a lamp you will have to really want one of these to cough up the cash. After a few weeks of use, I must admit he is growing on me, and if nothing else he is certainly a conversation starter. RRP £100

mountaineering and working outdoors in cold temperatures.
The G5 is unbelievably weather-proof; it features a quick-drying and protective outer shell that consists of a Cordura stretch, a water-repellent, anti-abrasion stretch
fabric with a waterproof membrane. The heat-sealed zipper and Velcro cover, twinned with the inner waterproof membrane, means that any water will stay on the outside of the boot where it belongs. The rear flex zone makes light work on all types of terrain, whether it is smooth and even or rough and rugged, and the Vibram Matterhorn sole has tough Impact Brake System lugs. To keep you light on your feet, the volume and weight have been reduced to the minimum. The protective edge is lightweight PU TechLite, and the midsole is made from 3mm of insulating carbon honey-comb tech to keep those toes nice and toasty. HAIX Protector Pro Boots The HAIX Protector Pro Boots have been designed with professional gardeners and forest rangers in mind. These boots are ideal for keeping you on your feet on slippery, muddy surfaces, and also protect you from falling branches and work with chainsaws. They are health and safety certified for forest rangers, with cut protection class 1 (tested at a chainsaw speed of 20 m/s), and they have also been awarded the “KWF PROFI” seal of quality by the German Forestry Advisory Board, which is never a bad thing! The Protector Pro is packed full of protective and useful features. The tip of the boot has a steel toe cap, and they have deep treads to ensure optimum traction from wet tree trunks and rocks to muddy or icy paths. The rubber used on the soles is durable and abrasion resistant, giving you years of
50
regular use before they start to wear down. They are also oil and petrol resistant and provide insulation against both the heat and cold. The four-ply GORE-TEX membrane will keep out rain, puddles and snow whilst at the same time allowing moisture (a nicer way of saying foot sweat) to escape the boot, helping your feet to regulate their temperature. The upper is made from a high quality black bull leather with an additional rubber toe cap to prevent wear and tear, and the pigments in the leather reflect the sun’s rays to prevent overheating.
On the inside, the lining provides comfort and the heel cup is flexible enough that you can kneel without any difficulty. The insole can even be removed and washed if required to help keep those unpleasant smells at bay. The HAIX Protector Pro Boots are extremely comfortable straight out of the box, as well as hard wearing and protective. I also like the design - they aren’t too clumpy and provide a spring in your step. You can create as many patient profiles as you need and can share them with any users. Hudway Glass Every now and then, we get in a gadget that aims to make the use your phone as a Sat. Nav. as easy as possible. This often involves fiddly brackets or sucker pads on your window, which block your view when driving. The Hudway Glass is a clever piece of kit that allows you to see your directions without having to take your eyes off the road. It fits to any dash, with options of either a compact mount, or a larger one with a bendable base. Simply place your device on top of the mount, slide it and it will snap into place. As your phone itself isn’t clamped into place, you can easily remove it as you leave the car. To use the Hudway Glass, you need to place your smartphone in your line of sight. The glass lifts to a 90˚ angle and reflects the screen’s image. As the image in the glass is a reverse of the image on your screen, you will need to download a compatible app - there are lots to 54
choose from but you won’t be able to use Google maps (the HUD app is a good choice as it keeps the image big, bold and minimal.) The Glass has been treated with layers of special coating on the transparent lens to create a crisp reflection whilst remaining
transparent, so you can still see the road though the screen. It works well on both gloomy or bright days due to the tinted lens, is easily discernible, and you can adjust your screen’s brightness for the best results. I like the simplicity of the Hudway Glass – it is a minimalistic, clean design that looks good on your dash, and you don’t need to remember to charge it or waste time setting you phone into it. KS Wireless Music Adaptor As someone who gets to play with gadgets and the latest tech for a living, you couldn’t be blamed for assuming I would have the most up-to-date gear at home, but rather shamefully, I cling onto some ancient relics like the Canon 350D, a Sony tv that’s older and heavier than I am and an iPod Classic that is about ten years old. The iPod is my biggest frustration, as time after time I get given these awesome Bluetooth headphones that I can’t use with my out-of-date player. Enter the KS Wireless Music Adaptor. This small box harbours the power to convert wired headphones to Bluetooth, send TV audio to Bluetooth headphones and transform car Aux to Bluetooth. This adaptor has two modes; the Transmitter mode converts your TV, PC, MP3 player, turntable, or similar device to
56
Bluetooth so you can pair it with your Bluetooth headphones or speaker, and Receiver mode works the opposite way by converting any speaker, headphones, radio, car stereo, Hi-Fi system or similar so you can pair it with your Bluetooth mp3 or smart phone. The KS Wireless Music Adaptor is easy
to use - simply plug it into your chosen device, select either Transmit or Receive, enable Bluetooth and pair it with your device. The adaptor has a built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery that will give you about nine hours of playtime as a receiver or thirteen hours as a transmitter (off the back of a twohour charge). You get a Bluetooth range of up to ten meters, which is ok, but I would like to see wider range so you aren’t limited to one room. The 3.5mm Aux cable included is very short, which is handy for keeping things neat and tidy, and there is also a small 3M Dual
Lock strip included that allows you to stick it onto your device. I think a case with a clip could be more useful here, rather than sticking Dual Lock all over your devices. The KS Wireless Music Adaptor’s sound quality is as good as any Bluetooth transmitted sound can be to this date - it won’t be good enough for the audiophiles, but for the rest of us it will be simple and effective.
