Introducing GOBAG 2

The ultimate carry-on backpack

With a modular travel system powered by Velcro and a built-in vacuum compression bag, GOBAG 2 squeezes every bit of air out of soft gear so only carry on luggage is required! Following the successful launch of the original GoBag in 2015 on crowd-funding platform Kickstarter, with almost 2,500 backers from all over 4

the world, the team are back with the new and improved GoBag 2 launching on Kickstarter on 7th November 2017. After struggling to find a suitable bag to

take as a carry-on on cheap flights across Europe, the GoBag was conceived. The GoBag 2’s design is an incredible fusion of travel bag design and dry-bag technology. The sturdy bag has a modular system powered by Velcro that allows the bag to be

customised for each trip’s needs, and the built-in vacuum compression bag squeezes every bit of air out of soft gear such as clothing and towels to make more room for everything else. The fully removable Max Pack dry bag stored within GoBag 2 is a welded bag made from TPU coated nylon which can be compressed by hand (or with a vacuum using the check valve if serious space-saving is needed) to free up oh-so precious interior space. Its carry-on size means no waiting around to check in your luggage, no delays at the luggage carousel, no lost baggage and no exorbitant checked baggage fees. To top it all off, it is built to last with everything housed within a weather-resistant coated nylon fabric that can take a beating and

keep coming back for more. So whether you are traveling on business, for a family holiday or an adventure of a lifetime, you can carry less, but experience much more #PackSmallThinkBig. Hypalon is placed over areas of maximum wear like the base, offering the ultimate in abrasion protection and GoBag is constructed from TPU Coated Ballistic Nylon, a waterproof material used to make inflatable power boats. The Full Edge Zip, which runs along the outer edge of the front and side panels, is a 2.5 metre long, durable YKK zip and the pull strings from high tensile strength para cord – no flimsy plastic zips here! With six different ways to open your bag, items are easily accessible so no need to dig around at the bottom again. There is

even a new secret pocket at the side of the GoBag 2 which is perfect for storing passports, tickets or any other valuables. In addition, it features an integrated wash bag, no more wasting time at airport security as liquids and pastes are easily to hand and stored together. The wash bag can be easily removed from its Velcro attachment allowing travellers to move speedily through the airport and the 15 inch laptop pocket has a quick release pull so your laptop is easily accessible whenever you need it. GoBag 2 will be available on Kickstarter from 7th November 2017. Early Bird Offer! The first 100 backers will be able to get their GoBag 2 for just £110, a huge 40% off the RRP of £180. Both of these prices will include shipping.

The Beauty Collection OptiBac Probiotics ‘For every day MAX’ Even with a healthy diet and regular exercise, many of us can still experience low energy levels and poor digestion function from time to time. The OptiBac ‘For every day MAX’ Probiotics aim to give you a daily gut booster (not as painful as it sounds). They contain the strains of probiotics that have been researched in vitro and clinical trials and were proven to help gut health. The OptiBacs are

sugar, fat and flavouring free and contain 50 billion live microorganisms combining three strains: L.acidophilus NCFM, B.lactis HN019 and B.lactis BI-04. These little microorganisms attach themselves to the gut wall lining that blocks pathogens from creeping in and making us ill, and survive the conditions of stomach acidity and bile salts (that’s an image to put you off your lunch).

These daily capsules are available in one month’s supply for £35.99.

https://www.optibacprobiotics.co.uk/shop/for-every-day-max Macacha Plant Protein Shakes The Plant Protein Shakes from Macacha use natural plant protein from both raw and vegan superfoods, with a base of organic pea and rice proteins. The two available shakes are called ‘Energy’ and ‘Peace’, containing herbs and adaptogens (used in herbal medicine) chosen for their benefits.

10

Each 33g sachet contains 19g of protein. The shakes also have iodine that is found in seaweed and kelp, which supports healthy metabolism and thyroid function. The alkalising properties of the ingredients help to produce a natural pH balance, and the rich blends of iron will aid

metabolism and help keep fatigue at bay. The Energy shake has been designed for active people, to help support muscle mass and healthier bone mass, whilst the

Peace shake has been created with yoga lovers in mind, with a formula to help promote the feeling of calm and serenity, and is caffeine free to help you wind down after a

long day. Both shakes are available in either a 500g drum at £32, 10x 32g sachet box at £29 or in single sachets at £2.99 each.

They have been formulated to be extra conditioning and moisturising, and to help smooth and soothe the skin. The rich fragrance of Blackberry and Thyme is sweet and quintessentially British, evoking the thought of a beautiful English country garden (even if yours looks more like a builder’s yard) with

added scents of green tea, rosemary, mimosa, white jasmine, musk and amber. The Exfoliating Hand Scrub (£4.99 / 100ml) contains pumice to cleanse and remove ingrained dirt, blackberry extract to help protect and moisturise, and thyme oil to provide a healing, antibacterial layer. 92% of the ingredients are naturally derived. The Nourishing Hand Cream (£5.99 / 100ml) has a blend of shea butter, thyme oil and blackberry extract and helps condition the skin and nails. 96% of the

Edifier R1800 BT Speakers The Edifier R1800 BT Speakers are bookshelf speakers that can be connected by either a dual RCA input or through Bluetooth. It has a Class D amplifier and 10-degree angled fronts that help to direct the sound straight to your ears. So, the first impressions is a little mixed, I love the high gloss black body, it is very attractive and looks great on the book shelf, however the front of the speaker lacks any distinction. I think more could have been done here to finish the quality aesthetic off. The body of the speakers isn’t just there to look pretty - the drivers are housed in MDF enclosure to help reduces distortion and minimises acoustic resonance. These speakers are equipped with Dynamic

24

Range Control (DRC) and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to limit and reduce distortion and the builtin class D amplifier drives the sound out across the room, it produces 70 watts of balanced sound and its 4 speaker drivers strive to create clear highs and rich lows. Due to the Bluetooth connectivity, the R1800BT can be paired with any device, sync up your smartphone, tablet or computer to listen to music wirelessly, but fear not as you can still connect through AUX and dual RCA input if you want to make things more simplified. These speakers only

weigh 6.63kg so you can move them around easily enough if you want to redecorate or move them from an office space to living room. They come with a glossy black remote control which is nice and responsive, and you have control over the volume treble and bass, these can also be controlled from the back of one of the speakers for when you possibly (in my case, inevitably) loose the remote. So, what about the big one? The sound quality? For the price, it has a surprisingly deep bass but lacks detail, the mid and high tones are bright and clear though, it also works well for films or tv but you will need to reduce the bass or it becomes far too overpowering. RRP ÂŁ119.99

Distil Union Wally Agent

Distil Union was formed by Nate Justiss and Lindsay Windham in 2011. The micro-collective of designers aims to create products to improve experiences in our everyday lives by self-funding from Kickstarter (six projects to date). The Wally Agent is part of their leather Wally range; this take

32

on the typical billfold aims to offer a slim profile with easy

access via the interior pull-tab pockets. It sports four interior pockets plus a section for notes, intended to make the Agent the ideal choice for a front-pocket storage. If you have ever been

to a gig, gone travelling or just left the house, you will know that everyone wants to steel your things out of your back pocket. So, unless you want to rock around trying to pull off the casual/please don’t rob me look with your hands jammed into your back pockets, moving your valuables into you front pockets (yes, they aren’t just for loose change and pocket fluff) is a good idea. So, let’s look at the slim profile. At approximately 15mm when empty, I don’t think it’s breaking any records, but at 100mm x 90mm it is compact. The other big feature is the Wally Pull-Tabs – that idea is that you simply pull on the tab and out pops your card or money, but in practise it is a bit of a fiddly

pain which slows you down. The tabs work well enough at popping your cards out, but when you put them back in you need to make sure they are behind the tabs or they won’t move. When putting notes or more flimsy things in there, you need to push the tab in with your fingers. I like the colour and texture of this wallet, but the stitching isn’t consistently good quality all the way around the edges. It is an ok wallet, but it won’t change your life, and those pull tabs could potentially make your life harder. RRP $79.99

Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator Prop Replica Oh my gosh, calling all geeks, it’s here!!! The Wand Company has produced a replica Communicator that connects via Bluetooth to enable a speakerphone, allowing you to use it just like they did on the show. This highly accurate replica looks amazing, produced from the first 3D structured light scans of the last known hero screenused Communicator prop, it has a rotating moiré pattern, ABcoated iridescent jewels and has authentic voice clips arranged in sentence fragments for immersive experience, while also being a fullyfunctional handset. Flip open the antenna (it even makes the “chirp chirp chirp” noise) and

34

you can answer calls. So, where do I start? The build quality is good, I’m not so keen on the main body on the Communicator as it feels a bit like cheap plastic, but the rest of it is good. There is a contactless charger base for the Builtin lithium polymer battery, which attaches with a magnet, so you can rip it off in the event of a call or Tribble emergency. There are 20 authentic voice clips that can be activated though a complex button system that we are used to seeing from The Wand Company. It’s easy enough to connect over Bluetooth, but hearing my SIA ringtone coming through the communicator with

tinny sound quality was disappointing, you can listen to music through it too but you probably won’t want to. Saying all that, I still kind of love it. It comes with a protective hard case to keep it safe for your collection or when travelling to various comic cons. You can even use the Communicator to initiate voice dialling and to access other functions available via voice-activated assistants such as Siri on iPhones, Google Now on Android or Cortana on Windows phones. This is a wonderfully fun little gizmo, an absolute must-have for Star Trek fans, Sci fi fans, and collector’s alike. RRP £119.95

Shreddies Men’s Undershorts I had high hopes for the Shreddies Undershorts as we have recently started to try a healthier diet by eating more veg, and less meat. This has resulted in my other half letting rip some crackers, although the noise is initially hilarious (yes, we are both over 30 and it still makes us laugh), but when the smell of old bins and compost heap wafts over my way…let’s just say even the cats leave the room, and they enjoy smelling some questionable areas on each other! The Undershorts are made entirely from activated carbon, designed to be worn under any outer clothing but over your underwear. The active carbon lining sounds scary but it is there to absorb odours by trapping and neutralising your bum coughs. The cloth is then reactivated after washing. The garment has a life of two to three years before you should probably hand them to a priest to exorcise 36

and dispose of in some sort of fire ritual. Joking aside, flatulence can be an embarrassing issue for people with conditions like IBS, Gastritis, Crohn’s disease, Dyspepsia and Colitis, as well as food intolerance and allergies, so to find something that could help eliminate one side effect could mean the world to some. Therefore, we were so disappointed to find they didn’t exactly provide the odour free relief we expect.

Although they fit my butt-yodelling husband well, and helped reduce the smell, it didn’t eliminate it. On top of that they were uncomfortable, the extra thick layer made the trouser area too bulky and warm, the material was rough and when it rubbed against itself, it made a rustling noise that could make you hyper aware that you are wearing them. You also need to be aware of your posture when using them. You can’t be slouched in a chair or with your legs akimbo, this will make them ineffective. So to sneak out a cheek squeak by standing with your legs together and trying to let your wind out slowly, or sitting with your knees together, this could

draw more attention to you if you happen to be playing five-a-side, for example. Finally, you need to wash them separately to your normal clothes with soda crystals or baking soda only, which is a bit of a pain in the butt. Oh, and not forgetting the waist band has “Shreddies” written all around it so everyone who sees it will either know you wear special pants or will ask you why your underwear is made by a breakfast cereal. All things considered I don’t believe they are worth the trouble of correct puffer posture, uncomfortable material, hot butt and washing hassle for the everyday stinker. People who are desperate to reduce the embarrassment might disagree, but we will just light a scented candle instead. RRP £80

Edifier MP211 The Edifier MP211 is a compact mini speaker available in 5 glossy colours, pink, yellow, blue, black or white with a built-in microphone which allows you to answer your calls hands free and can be connected to devices via Bluetooth 4.0, AUX cable or NFC. At 215grams its ultra-light and with dimensions 15 × 6.2 × 3.1 cm it is great for travelling. Additionally, you can control the edifier from your transmitting device or use the volume, play/ pause, fast forward/ rewind and call connect/disconnect buttons on top of the Edifier. The MP211 is charged up through an included Micro USB port and the Builtin Li-ion battery will last about 10 hours of continuous of play and comes with USB

38

charger, AUX cable and an attachable carry strap. My first impressions of the Edifier MP211 is that it is well built, it has a tactile sleek feel with large responsive buttons, furthermore, it charged up quickly and will let you know when you are connected via Bluetooth with a useful, yet grating, beep. Whether you choose to use Bluetooth, AUX or Mirco SD the speaker produces a crisp clear sound, it works well for movies or TV shows and has a good mid-

range sound. Where the device falls a little short is music, the top notes get flattened a little and the bass leaves a lot to be desired. However, we must remember that the pros outweigh the cons with the MP211, you would be hard pushed to find a mini speaker in this price range, as versatile and with a better sound quality. Audiophiles and bass heads may find the MP211 lacking but I think most people would appreciate the sound quality, long battery life, ease of use and compact charm of this mini speaker. RRP £24.99

AI Men’s Down Jacket Basic This jacket from AI is something to behold - think advanced technology meets modern fashion. I have a feeling it might invoke a marmite reaction in many people; with built in goggles, a mesh mouth piece and ear patches, the aesthetic is not for the traditionalist. Available in eight colours and seven sizes, the AI Men’s Down Jacket has an outer shell made from 100% nylon waterproof and windproof materials, and is packed full of real down padding with a 700-fill power that provides a lightweight but superwarm insulation. The built-in goggles 40

have lenses with a polarising filter suitable for medium illumination and cloudy days. To ‘wear’ the goggles, you need to zip the entire hood closed over your head and pull the draw string at the back for a closer fit. What’s more, the lenses are interchangeable, so you can find something more appropriate for your lighting conditions or switch them out entirely for patches that match the material of the hood. In addition, you can put your headphones

in the hood with the mesh ear patches and hear people and other noises clearly. While the hooded / goggle system can get a bit hot when done up, the jacket is still has great style credentials; with two large pockets on the outside and inside, a water-resistant goggle pocket on the inside and a smart device pocket in the chest, this number ticks a lot of boxes. I think this jacket wins at style and function; warm, unique and made to last, it is a worthwhile investment for the winter. RRP £329

Bobbin Freelance Handlebar Bag Bobbin was established in 2007 with the idea of creating bikes and bike accessories for people who love cycling but aren’t bike nerds. Based in London, Bobbin takes inspiration from the colour pallet of Dick Bruna, the simplicity of Tove Jannson and the 1960’s London scene. The Freelance bag is a stylish wax cotton handlebar bag with brown leather straps. Due to the wax treatment, this bag is water-resistant, featuring both internal and external waterproof pockets. It also two side pockets that extend with snappers - I could just about cram in my Samsung S6 but anything bigger wouldn’t fit, so I’m not sure what you would use these pockets for. The Freelance comes with everything you need to get it mounted safely onto your bike: the attachments seem a bit plasticky and

42

naff, but it is quick to realise and holds firm even over bumpy terrain. The inside of the bag is beautifully lined with a blue and white striped material that separates into three compartments to help keep things organised. The clasps can be opened and closed easily with one hand and the main flap has some weighted magnets, meaning you can flip it closed whilst on the move. There is a shoulder strap which allows you to convert the Freelance into a shoulder bag when you’re off the saddle, but annoyingly the

strap is quite stiff and gets in the way when you put it on the bike. It can be folded into the bag, but that takes up room. I found what worked best was to tuck it under the flap that covers the plastic connector, but this isn’t ideal. Overall, I really liked the Freelance bag - it looks great both on and off the bike, as well as being practical and well crafted. RRP £90

Thames & Kosmos Robotics Workshop The Robotic Workshop, designed for ages 10+, is a kit that lets you to build and program robots with this complete robotics engineering system, with the use an ultrasonic sensor, light sensor, touch sensor, precision motor, geared motor, CB1 core controller, speaker and sound sensor, and hundreds of snaptogether building pieces. They make ten different robots as well as allowing you to make your own designs too. The workshop aims to teach you how the sensors can be used to control the robots, you can build an ultrasound robot that can avoid obstacles, a drawing robot, and a touch sensor robot and then move on to more complex robots that have multiple functions,

46

such as a ball-shooting robot, a crawling robot, and a grabbing robot. You can even build a robotic arm that can pick up objects, a butler robot, a robot that will turn toward a light source, and a scorpion robot. The robots are controlled in real-time and programmed to perform series of commands using a app on iOS (must support Bluetooth 4.0 and

must be running iOS 8 or later) or Android (devices must support Bluetooth 4.0 and must be running Android 5.0 or later, a display of 9.7 inches or larger is recommended tablets) and Windows PCs. The PC app connects to the core controller via a USB cable and then the app uses the open source visual block programming library Google Blockly to make coding fast and easy to understand. It all sounds so promising, a budding engineer’s dream, right? Well, this is a far from perfect toy, normally, it’s the assembly that makes

you want to rip your hair out but putting this together was good fun, trying to get the thing to work was a different story. We found the app buggy, the Bluetooth connection kept dropping out, it was difficult to get the robot to perform its functions consistently or at all, which was frustrating. The pieces are quite robust but when assembled it doesn’t very feel very stable. The Robotics Workshop would be awesome if the app worked, you can build cool robots to look at, but don’t expect them to become your loyal servants. RRP £100

BACtrack S80 The BACtrack S80 is a professional-grade breathalyser that uses police-grade Xtend Fuel Cell Sensor Technology with enhanced linear accuracy and has quick one-button operation. With a single press the power button, you can begin testing in seconds. The S80 Pro has been tested by and meets the requirements of the DOT/NHTSA for a personal breath alcohol screening device. The main player here is the Xtend Fuel Cell Sensor Technology this sensor is the same model that is trusted by

48

hospitals, clinics, and law enforcement, and produces the highest level of accuracy and consistency. The S80 has a LCD Screen which shows you your results in a bright and easy-to-read display, and it comes with extra mouthpieces - six in

total – to make it easy and less disgusting to test your friends and family (no one wants to share hangover mouthpieces!) However, I would love to see the mouthpieces detailed with a coloured band or number to make it easier to distinguish them. The breathalyser uses an effective breath capture mechanism that is designed to exclude ambient air, fumes and

other airborne gases that could contaminate results, and only measures air that is from deep within the lungs. Result provided are over the complete range of alcohol concentrations expected in the breath, from 0.000 to 0.400 % BAC, and will not show a false positive due to the presence of acetone, which some semiconductor models misread in people who are diabetic or on a low-calorie diet. The sensor has an extended life that will maintain accuracy for up to thousands of tests, and it has a super-fast warm-up time of 10 to 20 seconds, which means you can quickly whip through your entire friendship group the morning after the night before to see who is suitable to send out for coffee and bacon rolls. The S80 is easy to use - simply blow into the mouthpiece for five seconds and your results will pop up after three more. It is powered on two AA batteries that will last

you approx. 1,500 tests. The unit itself is compact, lightweight (136g with mouthpiece and batteries) and can be stowed away in the protective hard-shell carrycase. To keep the accuracy up to scratch, it will need to be returned occasionally to

the manufacturer (in the USA) for calibration. During our testing, we found the BACtrack S80 accurate, fast and reliable, with clear results to let you know your alcohol levels and your ability to drive and work. RRP $129.99

Skandika Mercury Moon Chair Cringe alert! One of the things I miss when we go camping aside from clean toilets, cold beer, and not getting food poisoning from under-cooked sausages, is having a cuddle on the sofa. Before you get excited, no, the Mercury Moon Chair is not a sofa. Also, I must say straight away that the max weight for the chair is 110kg. I won’t tell you how much we weigh together but it is slightly over that… The good news is that we didn’t fall through the bottom of it. The Mercury Moon Chair from Skandika is a massive, lightly padded, XL chair that is as handy as it is comfortable. At 105 x 44 x 95cm you can get lost in it, and if you are like me and like to hitch your feet up when you are sitting then there is enough space for that. I even managed to curl

50

up in it laying down, however you will need a degree of flexibility to achieve this with any comfort. It is available in an unoriginal standard navy-blue colour and it comes with a cheap carry case. I would like a more comfortable shoulder strap as due to the weight (4.5kg) it does dig into your shoulder, it would also be nice if the bag closed fully to help protect it from any light rain, but this can be forgiven due to the quality of the chair. Constructed from 600D Oxford Polyester, it feels tough and durable unlike some chairs that make you feel like it will give

way at any minute. The strong steel frame has a diameter ca. 16/18mm and the seat has a total height of 43cm, more than enough height to comfortably lean back on. It folds down when not in use but I wouldn’t exactly call it compact. I’m not looking forward to trying to squeeze in the Mini next year, but I will happily leave my husband at home if it means I can take this instead, it’s that comfortable. RRP £59

myHummy Filbert Sleep Aid As any parent will tell you there comes a time when you little darling just won’t go to sleep and where you would literally try anything that helps. Have you tried sleep aids? These devices can make all the difference to the first few months of parenthood and could possibly just save your sanity. Filbert the bear from myHummy, is a smart little bear, approx 19x36cm, with a bowtie and checked sleeves, soft but not fluffy or as cute as some other sleep aids on the market. It is a, dare I say it, classy toy, available in light brown or ash grey, not a bright primary colour in sight. Not only does he look smart, but he is a hardworking bear and will look after your little one through the night. Due to his size and more classic design, I’m not sure how much he will get played with in the daytime, but who cares if he helps to get bubs to sleep.

52

His magic lays within the removeable white noise device that slides in to his tummy via a zip pocket, different clicks will activate different things. Firstly there are five different white noise varieties, all equally annoying to my ears but soothing to a baby’s unrefined tastes, choose from: a hairdryer, vacuum cleaner, ocean waves, falling rain and amniotic fluid with heartbeat. To be honest they all sound very similar with slightly different beats, they can all be activated by quickly double clicking the button. To set the volume press and

hold the button until it reaches the desired level and triple click the button to activate the non-stop mode and help your little one sleep through the night. The sounds will play for 60minutes, which is twice as long as some of the most popular sleep aids, and then gently fades to silent. The coolest feature is the sleep sensor which will turn the white noise on again in the event of your baby waking up, this could just be enough to sooth them back to sleep without you even having to put a toe out of bed. All these features do take their toll on the batteries and you can bash through them quickly. Depending on how you have the sound device positioned, it can stick out a bit of the bear and

be a bit hard, but on the plus when the sound device is removed the bear is machine washable, always a bonus. This bear might not be the cutest, and with that bowtie and a name like Filbert he has defiantly been on a ‘gap yah’ with daddy’s money, but don’t let the fact that he is a posh-o make you think he won’t work hard at helping your baby sleep. KitSound Cayman Speaker The Cayman speaker is a wireless connecting speaker with large drivers that is powered off of the mains. This British-engineered speaker has fifty watts of power, a dedicated subwoofer and two dedicated sound modes, and two 2.5inch high frequency drivers that work with a 4inch mid/bass driver. It connects wirelessly over NFC or Bluetooth, which is easily done without digging through the instruction manual. There is an AUX to AUX cable include for wired connection and you can even charge you device at the same time via the built-in USB charging port.

56

Starting with aesthetics, I wasn’t that taken with the Cayman. I half expected it to look like an alligator before I realised that it was Cayman, not Caiman, which may have added to my disappointment, but it is a bit boring. The large black façade is rather uninteresting. The metal stand is

nice, but you don’t notice it unless you are handling the thing, and at 3870g that won’t be happening very often. There is a glowing light at the bottom that indicates connectivity and other modes, which is about as exciting as it gets. The control panel is tilted slightly - I can only assume this is to discretely tuck it out the way, but this means it isn’t always easy to see, especially if there is a shelf above it. As the panel is touch screen,

you can’t even feel your way to the right button. To make things slightly easier, there is a remote include with the speakers, but this is flimsy and plasticky not the same build quality as the speaker at all. The buttons on the remote are very small too, which I could already imagine someone like my old man having trouble with. The speaker’s sound quality is good, with layered depths, booming rich bass and clear mid and high tones. However, there is a slight hissing sound from the moment the speaker is switched on, and it can be heard at lower levels if you listen for it. If you do hear it, it’s hard to stop hearing it. This might just be the unit we have, but it did ruin an otherwise good quality sound. On the whole, I wouldn’t choose to spend my money on a Cayman - it looks dull and the remote is cheap, but this could all be forgiven if it wasn’t for that hiss. RRP £200

Dr Brown’s Deluxe Steriliser The newly re-designed Deluxe Bottle Steriliser from Dr Brown’s uses steam to sterilise six bottles at once. It has been designed specifically for all Dr Brown’s bottles and most other bottle brands too. This steriliser has an easy-to-use operation with electronic controls, cycle indicators and an automatic shut-off when a cycle is finished. There is a removable tray that is designed to position bottles so that steam is directed straight into them, and the built-in accessory tray holds bottle parts, teats, dummies, tongs and measuring cup. My first impressions were that the steriliser is sturdy but could have a cleaner finish; the lid needs a little wobble sometimes to get it to shut properly; the control panel is simple to use but the buttons, especially the start

58

button, can be difficult to press - I would rather something more tactile and easy to press. You can easily get your bottles into the steriliser, but when you have all six spaces filled, there is no room for the bottle tops, which means you will have to run two cycles to get all of your gear cleaned. Due to the design of the machine, it isn’t easy to clean and dry in between all the nooks and crannies. Also, the sheer size of

the thing means it isn’t exactly travel friendly. However, saying that, it isn’t heavy, so it’s not impossible. The colour indicator on the cycle guide provides a quick reference to how far along the program is, and I like that you can switch the steriliser it on and leave it to do its thing. The Dr Brown’s Deluxe Steriliser works as it should; it is quick and convenient, but there are a few niggles that prevent it from being an excellent product. A tidier finish, an easier way to clean it and the ability to put all bottles and lids in at the same time would be enough to win us over. RRP £75

This little device works straight out of the box and does not require any extra software or drivers to be installed. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, 62

Chrome, Android, Thin Clients and embedded systems. Constructed from aluminium, it is water and dust proof to protect against any physical damage, and the internal drive components are sealed with a tamper-proof coating. If you forget your PIN, you can reset it with an Admin PIN – however, if the Admin enters an incorrect Admin PIN ten consecutive times, then both the User and Admin PINs, the encryption key and all data will be deleted and lost forever, like a self-destruct feature. For the price, I would like a more robust build quality - this doesn’t feel solid enough and makes me question the life expectancy of the device. The buttons are small and very close together; I understand that this is to keep the USB as small as possible, and is fine for smaller fingers and people with nails, but I also think of my dad’s massive hands

when I see products like this. In fact, I can already here him swearing at it. Changing the PIN isn’t easy and involves a process of different coloured flashing lights which isn’t very clear to understand, and because the pin needs to be at least seven digits long it’s a bit of a slog. The other thing I

found irritating was the blue flashing LED – it is useful to know the status of the stick, but the light is also distracting. Other than a few minor issues, though, the security is excellent, which is the most important thing. RRP £109

Giro Balance Goggles with Loden Green Lens The Balance Goggles from Giro feature a classic full frame style packed with modern vision technology, whilst the VIVID lens from Optics by ZEISS provide enhanced contrast and clarity compatible with Giro helmets. Created in Giro’s test lab in Scotts Valley, California, these new goggles have been designed to give you wide-angled peripheral vision. The frame has been shaved down around the rim and is completely non-existent in some places to remove any obstacles from restricting your field of vision. We found the Balance comfortable to wear - they are light on your face and that slim frame feels great, unlike some goggles that are oversized and bulky. The triplelayer face foam with micro fleece facing is lovely and soft against you skin and forms a perfect seal. The anti-fog coating is excellent - even after a hard ride with a hot face, the goggles remained clear and

64

comfortable; you can put them on and forget you are even wearing them. Giro has a full range of performanceengineered, polycarbonate lenses in a wide variety of lens tint options for specific light conditions, from bright blue skies with blinding sunshine to angry storm clouds. All the lenses filter 100% of harmful UV and features a tough, durable coating that not only resists fogging

but is also scratchresistant. The lenses are also quick and easy to switch in and out, so you can change them as quickly as the weather changes. The Balance Goggles we received came with the Loden Green lens, with a rather striking blue to green radiant design. Rated S2, they are best suited for mixed cloud conditions and offer 19-42% visible light transmission an excellent choice to cover most bases. We love the Balance Goggles: they offer great optics in a full range of conditions and provided excellent peripheral vision - a great choice for the slopes.

Fellow Stagg Ok, so some of you will look at this pour-over kettle, then look at your electric or hob kettle (commonly called a tea kettle amongst us coffee snobs), and wonder why you would need another kettle cluttering up your kitchen cupboards. If at this point you are thinking that your supermarket own brand, instant coffee in your Sports Direct mug is wonderfully tasty, you can probably stop reading here. If you are still with me, first, let me tell you why you need one of these pour-over kettles (or goosenecked kettles as they are also known). When you have researched and imported your premium coffee beans and ground them to their optimal coarseness, you don’t want to ruin them by dumping way too much hot water on them too fast and ruining your delectable flavour. A gooseneck

66

kettle gives you complete control over the speed and direction of your water flow to get the best extraction out of your beans. If you love your coffee, a pour-over kettle is a worthwhile purchase. So that leads me to why you should choose the Stagg from Fellow:

this beautiful kettle is gas, electric and induction compatible, with a 1 litre capacity and a 304 18/8 stainless steel body. Built into the lid is a brew-range thermometer with a red range that highlights the ideal brew temperature (between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit), and the precision pour spout that produces a slow and steady pour-over flow rate every time. The counter-balanced handle moves the centre of the mass back towards your hand, and the handle is thick and in a tactile shape with a good

grip, which all in all makes for a comfortable pouring experience (yes, that’s a thing and it’s important). The kettle is available in a smooth matte black finish, a shiny polished steel or a stunning polished copper that will instantly make you hate everything else in your kitchen for not being as beautiful. If you have respect for your beans, then one of these little beauties will help you get the best out of your coffee. RRP $79

Gourd Amplifier The Gourd Amplifier from Mountain Melodies Manufacturing was born after the company owners, Paul and Sue Bergstrom, found themselves with lots of kettle gourds laying around and thought “Why not?” Each amp has its own unique shape and sound. You can use it with instruments or to play music from your MP3 or smartphone. It runs off a 9-volt battery (not included), so it is totally portable, and connects to your music or instrument via a 1/4” input jack only (no Bluetooth here). When you order you will get a random colour - blue, green and red to name a few - but you can email the company to choose a specific colour in stock. The amps are handmade in Georgia, USA and are constructed from a hollow gourd. LED lights let you know when the power is on, and acrylic on the base provides a

68

weight whilst allowing you to appreciate the natural beauty of the material. It comes with two different cables - one with the 1/4” jack (typically used by keyboards, guitars and other instruments), and one with a headphonesized jack for playing tunes from your phone or MP3 player. We loved the look of this amp - it is so cute! We had a Kingfisher blue/

green variety and it is a little beauty, but that’s kind of it. It’s great that the product is portable, and the 2.5 watt will fill a room, but the sound quality is poor, the bass is non-existent, the top notes are tinny and the mid-range is flat. The amp is portable, but due to the shape and glossy finish, it is difficult to lift with one hand and it feels so fragile that if it was to slip, I fear it would be a goner. The bottom line is, this is a beautiful, unique piece but although it will look great in your house or on a camping trip, it won’t do your music justice. RRP $100

Foobot When you think of air pollution, your mind probably conjures up images of smoggy city streets packed with cars or huge factories pumping out plumes of grey smoke, but did your ever stop to consider that your home could also be filled with polluted air? Probably not, because you are a normal person, but consider the things we have and do in our house on a daily basis: cleaning, cooking, wood burners, and even outdoor polluted air getting trapped inside. The Foobot is an inhome monitor to give you a greater insight into your rooms’ air quality. It is easy to set up - simply download the app, plug in the Foobot and you will start receiving data onto your smart device almost immediately. The companion app is intuitive and gives you real-time data every five minutes, and at a glance the Foobot’s subtle, coloured LED display lets you know what your current air quality is like straight away. 72

You can use the Foobot with home automation devices such as IFTTT, Stringify, and/or Artick Cloud, which means you can leave the Foobot to control your air quality automatically without you needing to peel yourself off the sofa. However, you will need additional devices such as an air purifier to use this feature. The team at Foobot say that better air quality can have a direct effect on your health, sleep quality, allergies and productivity, as well

as helping you control mould and damp within your home. From our tests, the sensor seems accurate; we received alerts when I was cleaning the bathroom with a cocktail of horrible chemicals and when I forgot about the bacon and turned it into shrived black leather. The temperature can be off by a few degrees, but all the other readings seem right. I am not keen on the look of the Foobot but I love the dimmable LED display, and find myself gazing at the calming, pulsing lights safe in the knowledge that I am not surrounded by invisible dirty air. Kjus BT 2.0 Glove The Kjus BT 2.0 Glove has been created to help you avoid needing to whip your ski gloves off in freezing conditions when you need to call your hungover mates to see if they have even hit the slopes yet. These Bluetooth integrated gloves allow you to make and receive phone calls without getting your smartphone out of your pocket, keeping your hands warm and phone dry during sleet or snow. The gloves also feature an OLED display, so you can see who is calling, your battery life and connection status, as well as featuring a built-in waterproof microphone and speaker. Constructed from a 100% Polyester face fabric, a breathable Toray Dermizax EV membrane, 65% polyester and 15% wool lining, plus a 100% goatskin lining on the palm, they have a DWR treatment and produce a four-way stretch that is fully waterproof. This accumulates in a flexible and

74

warm glove that is comfortable to wear. There are a detachable wrist leash and hooks to attach these gloves securely to your gear (it would be an expensive lost glove, and you can almost guarantee it would be the one with the headset in). The speaker and microphone also have noise cancelling technology, though this didn’t prove effective or even noticeable during testing. The gloves are easy to use; the righthand glove needs to be charged via the Micro USB port and charges

up quickly. You pair it with your phone and can use it up to ten meters away from it, but it works best in under five meters. You can answer calls, cancels call, use call waiting and voice activated calling. The sound quality is ok, but not as good as you would experience on your device. Also, you look a little insane chatting away with your hand on the side of your head! The bottom line is, will you use these? There may be a small percentage of people who want to answer every call they get whilst trying to have a good time on the slopes, but I would rather switch off and enjoy repeatedly falling over on the nursery slope (I never said I was any good). Phone calls make up about

5% of communications via my phone, so if the OLED displayed SMS and other notifications it would prove more useful. The BT 2.0 are great gloves - warm and waterproof, with an expensive add-on that may provide beneficial to a small percent of (probably rich) people. RRP $399

Sphero R2-D2 YES! The Christmas toys are coming in, and as much fun as playing with all the gadgets in the office is, there is nothing better than getting to play with toys in the name of work. R2-D2 from Sphero is exactly the sort of thing that would have been at the top of my Christmas list when I was younger (who am I kidding it’s on there now). This clever little Astromech Droid is from a galaxy far, far away but coincidently happens to be completely compatible with your smartphone once you download the app (what are the chances?) You can control your Droid from your smart device or keep Artoo in top shape with holographic simulations. The technology featured in R2-D2 is unlike any other Astromech Droid. He will perform authentic movements and will go between bipod to tripod stances in one cool little move, you can drive him

76

around whilst he makes completely adorable beep boop noises (some rather cheeky ones too), trigger emotive waddles and make him have a complete paddy and fall over. The Droid to Droid Experience feature means he will happily interact with other Sphero App-Enabled Droids that you or your friends may own. He has authentic LEDs and Artoo’s signature front and rear lights are fully functional. R2-D2, is part of the Rebel Alliance, is a skilled Starship mechanic, and fighter pilot’s assistant with many features

to interact with and explore through the app. Not only can you control your Droids, but you can also watch Star War films with R2-D2 reacting by your side, explore Starships and watch the holographic simulations from the Star Wars galaxy with Artoo and the Sphero App-Enabled Droids. The app isn’t the most intuitive design but looks authentically Star Wars, it takes a little practice to get used to him moving about, but when you get the hang of him it is so much fun whipping him about the house. It is compatible with only iOS or Android devices, iOS iPad 3+, iOS 9+, iPhone 4S+, iOS 9+, iPod Touch 5th Generation+ and iOS 9+, and Android devices. While having OS 5.0 or higher, they must also have all of

the following hardware in order to operate a Droid using the app: Bluetooth LE (4.0), front and rear-facing cameras, microphone, distinct multi-touch landscape touchscreen, hardware sensors including gyroscope and accelerometer and Wi-Fi capabilities. I love this product, it is absolutely delightful, it’s like having a mini version of the real thing run about your house. RRP £179.99

Thames & Kosmos Geckobot Oh Geckobot, how I love you and hate you at the same time. Depending on the concentration levels and perseverance of your child, you might want to set aside yourself a day to put this together as chances are they will wonder off. The 8+ age rating is maybe a bit of a stretch but all kids are different and would recommend a few years older. So, what is the Geckobot? It is a wallclimbing (when it feels like it) robot that has a motorised air suction system on smooth and glossy surfaces, it uses a battery-powered motor that drives a gear system (that you will painstakingly put together), this produces a rotating motion that makes the legs go in a similar walking style to a real gecko. At the same time, the gear system makes the air pump to form

78

a vacuum on the feet on the wall and blows out air to release the other two feet so it can step off and move forward. Sounds clever, right? Well it is but it isn’t perfect, any dirt on the suckers or if you use it uneven surfaces, the Geckobot won’t grip on. During other times it worked too well and wouldn’t let go of the wall, we suspect this maybe because of some slight condensation increasing the vacuum

on the sucker. As well as strutting about in gecko form, the kit can also be used to make a robotic arm, crawling inch worm, smartphone holder, suction tow truck and car, ellipsograph (yeah google it, I had too), and suction gun. They all encourage experiments and learning about air pressure and mechanical physics. You will need a tiny Philips screwdriver, like sunglasses screw tiny, a measuring tape, ruler and 2 AAA batteries, there is nothing more gutting (and more likely to start and argument) than not being able to play with your Christmas

present because you don’t have the right gear. I sort of loved how much trickier it was to assemble than I expected, and it is nice to work together as adult and child to put it together. Challenging the child isn’t a bad thing but what I hated was the inconsistency in how well it worked. After all the labour intensive effort, you want it to be perfect every time, so it could become a bit of a let-down. So, I’m left on the fence with this one, its adaptable, cute, educational, runs great on the floor but the if the main thing that attracts you is the ability to run around on the wall, I’d probably think again. RRP £45

Peak Design Everyday Tote Often camera bags come in either a backpack or shoulder bag format, this is because when your hands are full of expensive camera you don’t want to be juggling a bag strap at the same time. So I was surprised when I saw that Peak Design had released an Everyday Tote bag. Available in Charcoal or Ash, the bag comes with two FlexFold Dividers, an anchor for key tether, and a tripod band to secure a tripod. It is carry on approved by most airlines and is made from a waxed Kodra synthetic canvas with DWR coating for weather protection. The compression-moulded high-density EVA foam dividers and protective panels help keep your gear safe and secure and the die-cast, stamped anodized aluminium hardware provides a high quality, clean finish. The bag has a light weight to it at only 2.4 lbs, an 18-20litre capacity, there is a dedicated tablet 80

sleeve (33X23X1CM) and laptop sleeve (32x22x2cm) designed to carry up to a 13inch Macbook Pro Retina, 2009 or later. The Tote is TOTEally versatile (I have a bag of puns for you‌) choose from one, two or three compartments inside, use the dividers to customise the inside to meet your gear profile, and the straps can be used to carry tripod, brolly, yoga mat or other larger items. The strap, with some quick adjustments can be used in a tote, messenger, shoulder and even backpack style, it could do with a few silicone strips on the inside of the strap just to help keep it in place on your shoulders but even without any padding the seat belt style straps are comfortable. The Everyday Tote has two cool side opening panels with magnetic and zip closure for quick and easy access, the main compartment has a really pleasing magnetic closure that peels open and snaps shut. There’s plenty of pockets to organise

your smaller accessories including colour coded little sleeves to distinguish your dead batteries and full SD cards. The large outer pocket can be used to store magazines or water bottles, there is a built-in luggage strap to attach the bag to a rolling suitcase and the Everyday Tote is also compatible with the

DJI Mavic and DJI Spark Drones, plus controller and accessories. I love the flexibility of this bag, the customisable options and general appearance, perfect for day trips and longer travels with or even without your camera gear. RRP $189.95

V-moda REMIX The REMIX is a small but mighty Bluetooth speaker, measuring in at just over 8”, powered with a newly designed glass-fibre diaphragm and long coil drivers, the REMIX also features a rear-mounted bass reflex port. The REMIX is the world’s first speaker to use a built-in headphone amplifier to drive your headphones with a power boost, it also comes with a daisy chain cable that lets you wire REMIX onto REMIX to an unlimited degree (well… as far as your bank account lets you) which lets you play with a larger sound and surround sound experience. The REMIX is Amazon Alexa compatible via the Echo Dot, it is straightforward

82

pairing it with your device over Bluetooth but there is a series of annoying little jingles that indicate when it’s is switched on, connected, and when you turn it off. The REMIX is constructed with a minimal aluminium finishing it is completely customisable so you can pimp your speaker into whatever garish mess bests reflects your personality. In fact the REMIX is world’s first full-surface 3D printed custom product

with 6 3D customizable surfaces. The Bluetooth connection provides a range of up to 33 feet (10 meters) range and simultaneously pairs with 2 devices while the lithium-ion battery provides up to 10+ hours play time. The sound is produced by glass fibre dual-drivers that create a clear and clean midrange, with sharp highs and the Passive Bass Reflector generates deep and thick bass, the sound is very impressive for such a little device, best suited for people who enjoy a good bass. The Immersive 3D Soundstage spreads the music around and fills the room whilst

the Instrument Engineer Verified multi-layers each instrument so you can easily pick out each instrument and vocal. We found the REMIX a bit boring in its original design and the customisation options tacky. It is massively over-priced, however, the sound quality is excellent for a speaker of this size so if you are partial to a bit flash and don’t need to eat for a couple of weeks this could be your dream speaker. Urbanista Seattle Wireless Headphones

These wonderfully tactile headphones are comprised of premium protein leather and a durable complimentary fabric cord, memory foam headphone-cushions with isolating memory foam that moulds to the shape of your ears and create a good seal. They are 172g, nice and light for long periods of wear, whilst having a clean minimalist look with only one physical button for switching it on and connecting. They are available in Rose Gold, Fluffy Cloud

84

(white), Blue Petroleum and Dark Clown (dark grey/black). The Seattle headphones are compatible with voice assistance (Siri and Google Now), will provide you with 12 hours of playtime on a single 2.5hour

charge and the fabric cord can always be plugged in if the battery unexpectedly runs out. For the convenience of travel these headphones are sturdy (TR90) and have a handy, practical folding function that makes them easy to pack. The sound quality is good enough and what you would expect from this price range, the bass won’t blow you away but it’s a clean sound across the tones, it

lacks a little depth and they didn’t go as loud as I would have liked but not enough to hinder your enjoyment. My only major gripe with these headphones is the built-in Soft Touch controls. This swipe technology is meant to keep the clean appearance whilst allowing you to control your music and calls with a fingertip, to achieve this swipe or tap the finger on the right ear cup. I found this feature inconsistent and frustrating, when trying to increase the volume it kept pausing the song instead to the point where I gave up and increased the volume on my phone, I would willingly sacrifice the uncluttered appearance for at least a volume button. The Seattle’s are good all-rounders and if you can get your head around the Soft Touch Controls then you might really enjoy them, but for us that touch sensitive control knocked off a few points of an otherwise decent pair of headphones. KitSound Hive 2+ Wireless Smart Speaker The Hive 2+ is a beefy little speaker with a unique beehive style design. This portable wireless speaker, new for 2017, has Siri and Google Assistant integration, which means you can interact with your device directly from the speaker. KitSound has increased the power and clarity of sound on their second generation of the Hive; the 40mm active drivers and digital amplifier, combined with a passive bass radiator, creates 12 Watts of sound. You can connect in many ways, including wireless via One Touch, NFC pairing or Bluetooth, so you can connect with most tablets and smartphones. If someone calls you, the Hive 2+ has a built-in call handling, so you can talk hands free and then return to your music when the inconsiderate, interrupting loved one hangs up. For less smart technology, there is line-in connect with the included Aux to Aux

86

cable. Using the Hive 2+ is intuitive and the large, tactile hexagonal buttons compliment the design. With a double tap of a button you can also activate Google or Siri and get it to control your music, or ask who does that new song you really like. The chunky design can withstand a bump or two, it is stable and the rubber feet will prevent it sliding about, even when its vibrating on the loudest setting. The Hive 2+ has 12 hours of continuous

play from one charge and can be charged with one of the thousand Micro USB cables you probably have kicking around the house. Overall, we were really impressed with this small but fierce little speaker - it is loud and clear, with an excellent range for its size.
