BUSINESS INSIGHTS FROM ORGANIZED CRIME Organized crime, e.g. Mafia, Yakuza, The Mexican Cartels, is one of the oldest industries, highly profiled by films and entertainment, and very efficient in key business practices. Are lessons from these practices applicable in industries that don’t share the “illegal” aspects of organized crime? Studying other organizations – competitors or from outside the sector - is a common source of management and leadership lesson and practices. Business School courses are rich in case studies of firms like GE, Shell, Amazon, Cemex, Google, etc. This session will however address 3-4 key drivers of business success within organized crime - e.g., market expansion and entry, pricing and competition, entrepreneurship and innovation, supply chain & distribution, and employee engagement - viewed from the lens of this intriguing industry. Topics covered: • What types of ideas are exportable from one sector to another? • Brand positioning by the Mexican drug cartels. • Globalization and Market Entry: Comparing the Mafia and Walmart’s entry into new markets. • Entrepreneurship and service models from the Xalisco Boys in Mexico. • What did Wall Street (Public Finance) learn from the Mafia? • What behaviors creates effective teams and high employee engagement in organized crime organizations? GETTING A GRIP ON EXPLORATORY TESTING This two-day workshop is a comprehensive guide to exploratory testing, with exercises designed to engage testers of all abilities, and structured workshops to help participants use and share the lessons learned. The course will introduce participants to a wide variety of approaches to exploratory testing: parsing the system; systematic exploration; modelling for success and failure; questioning; attacks and exploitations. Starting with three basic exploratory frameworks, we will construct models of the systems under test, and use those models to enhance our testing and to judge problems found. We will develop attacks and exploitations to reveal deep risks, and look at the potential risks in target technologies. Throughout the course, we will use session-based testing to support the personal and team discipline necessary to support effective exploration, and will examine ways that ET can be managed within existing processes. Learning objectives: • Understand the principles of exploration, and their application to software testing. • Introduce control and discipline by using session-based exploration. • Understand the application of ET to both the discovery of risk and the verification of value. • Use three frameworks for exploratory testing: transformations, states and maps. • Construct and use models during ET, and use those models to help judge problems found. • Understand how to use tools to increase their effectiveness in exploration. • Understand test selection within ET. • Use attacking techniques to reveal deep information. • Recognise opportunities for application of ET. • Arrive at an understanding of their personal exploratory style.

ANGULAR JS Angular is the wildly popular and productive front end MVC JavaScript framework championed by Google. It is in many ways a perfect meeting place between the agile world of JavaScript and powerful design patterns, more commonly found in serverside languages like Java. Built from the ground up with testability in mind, dependency injection allows us to isolate components and yoke them into a test harness. This course is practical. You will, right from day one, be building widgets and applications with real world applicability. We will build against tests from the end of day one, and design sensible, component based solutions using best practice. You will also gain an awareness of the wider JavaScript toolchain ecosystem, including Node, Karma and Gulp. The course will start with the fundamentals and will lead all the way up to advanced topics like code organisation, the digest cycle and modifying the scope of a transclusion in a directive. Who should attend: This course is designed for software developers who are interested in learning how to build single page web applications or mobile hybrid apps. You should have good coding skills, and some skill with JavaScript. You will also need to be able to compose a basic website in HTML and CSS.
