hat a fabulous summer it’s been so far down here in Cornwall; with the sub-tropical temperatures we’ve experienced lately the crystalclear waters of the Cornish coast have never been more irresistible for the surfers, paddle-boarders, divers and wild swimmers among us. While the resident sea-life has been thriving in the warm blue waters, another sort of living treasure has been ourishing in land, just waiting to be stumbled upon. The Duchy boasts some of the most beautifully established gardens in the country, and we’d like to take you on a stroll through some of our favourites. Turn to page 22 to read this month’s cover feature and to explore just a few of the stunning gardens coming into bloom this summer. We’ve also taken a closer look at the breathtakingly beautiful area that is Penwith this month, so make sure to turn to page 74 for the local makers, coastal crafters and Cornish eateries that, in our opinion, really ought not to be missed. As always, this issue features some of the most presitigous properties currently available in the county, so why not turn to page 28 and peruse the market from the comfort of your comfiest armchair If you’re looking for a temporary getaway, take a look at the stunning holiday homes with availability from page 58, and for the perfect Cornish keepsake why not be inspired by local makers (page 80) or Cornish artists (page 94) for your own made-in-Cornwall memento. Add to all of this some incredible prizes in this month’s competitions (page 101) and this really is the ultimate guide to Cornwall as we approach the autumn months ahead. ...happy reading!

enters sixth year of trading Returning for the third time to the beautiful grounds at Enys House and Gardens, Ludgate House Antiques have the pleasure of hosting the Antiques & Decorative Fair on 25th and 26th of September this year. For all things antique and vintage, this will be an unmissable opportunity to find something truly unique. All the dealers you may have come across last year at the fair are due to return, alongside some new faces from out of county who will broaden the range that the fair has to offer further than ever before. Needlework samplers, Treen and Gardenalia, specialise in vintage clothing and will be joining the event to add their magic to the already tantalising concoction of antique and vintage furniture, rugs, jewellery, art, books, militaria and much more!

Whether you’re a seasoned collector or you’d just like to have a browse through some unusual and exciting items, there’s something for everyone and a price range to suit all. The dealers who come together for the fair have endeavoured to cultivate a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and as Dave Evans, seller at the popular pitch for garden tools in the Coach House, puts it: “Everyone gets on and it has a lovely feel to it.” With an entry price of just £5, and under 16s getting in for free, there’s absolutely nothing to stop you making a day of it at the Antiques & Decorative Fair. Who knows what you’ll find For more information visit www.ludgatehouseantiques.com

Maggie Wombell, owner of Whitegoose(&Co), is delighted to be celebrating her sixth year of providing beautiful garments and unusual accessories from around the world, sourcing the items herself with thoughtful care. “I love running this wonderful little shop and it just seems to get better and better,” says Maggie. “My aim is to be as helpful as possible and make our customers feel wonderful and comfortable in the atmosphere we’ve created and we promise you won’t be disappointed.” The Wadebridge based shop boasts an eclectic collection of accessories, including French market baskets, Savon de Marsaille soaps, and cushions from Biggie Best. Also on offer is the Mexican brand, One Life, a range of Trousers from Pinns, jackets from Suzy D and many more tempting articles just waiting to be discovered. Stay travel calm with Rapid Health Test

Back to the wild The recent summer months have meant only one thing for the Wild Tipi team; they are as busy as ever putting up their stunning Giant Hat tipis for weddings and events all over the south west. With so much having been cancelled over the last year due to Covid restrictions, it’s been a particularly special summer season for Wild Tipi, and they are enjoying every minute. Owner Sam explains: “We have so missed bringing communities together to celebrate under the canopies of our giant tipis. It’s wonderful to see these events going ahead at last.” Hoping to make the business more sustainable and community-focused, Wild Tipi welcomes others to come and enjoy the space at their farm. They will be inviting others to hold nature-based workshops, wellbeing days and

The charity is immensely grateful for the donation, as Oli Hoare, Head of Fundraising, expresses: “This is such an amazing gesture and follows a period of huge disruption for our fundraising and shop teams.” For more information visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Knowing what to do regarding travel abroad this summer can be confusing; the latest Government guidance has enabled UK residents who have been fully vaccinated through the NHS to travel to Amber-list countries, without quarantining when they return.

Ian Maddever from NFU Mutual Liskeard and St Austell says: “I think it’s fair to say that almost everyone within our county will be touched by the care provided by the hospices either directly or indirectly at some point throughout their lives, and with this in mind we genuinely couldn’t think of a worthier recipient of the donation, especially at a time when fundraising has been so challenging”.

An element of

Three decades of architectural mastery

Cornwall

Originally established in 2013, lemental in was one of the first gins to be exclusively distilled and bottled in Cornwall for over 300 years, the recipe of which was the result of months of careful alcohol alchemy. In February 2020, Nicki and Joe Woolley uprooted their lives and took the plunge into the world of Elemental, and are now the proud owners of this unique distillery. The most important thing at Elemental in now has been to ensure that they continue the tradition of creating the hand-crafted, small-batch, premium gin that people know and love, whilst breathing some new life into the distillery and the brand. The multiaward winning Cornish in is a firm favourite with the locals, heralding juniper and citrus tones. Across the range they make an excellent gin and tonic, but for something different why not try the aspberry as an amazing ‘summer cup’, or the Apple with a splash of apple juice over ice? Established in 1992, and now owned and run by the current directors James and ill oran, Lilly Lewarne has been providing awless architectural design across Cornwall for almost 30 years. Lilly Lewarne designs with site, time, materiality, sustainability and humanity in mind, enabling them to create an architecture that is appropriate and functional, and endeavouring to employ a sense of clarity to their projects to create a result that the client can be proud of. Whether it’s a full renovation of a historic Cornish engine house, or a clean, contemporary build from the ground up, the team have an impressive array of projects under their belt, and having worked with most of the major contractors in the region are fully aware of the commercial pressures on their clients. Consequently, Lilly Lewarne aims to provide not only an e cient and interactive service, but also to engender quality, economy, durability, and buildability within their design solutions. We’ve experienced some incredible weather this summer and whilst we bask in these amazing temperatures, even on the beach with the sea lapping at their paws, our dogs can start to struggle and overheating can happen very quickly. Even at home, just as we struggle to sleep in extreme temperatures, imagine how much worse it can be for our furry friends. As temperatures rise, we all need to take extreme care when venturing out or staying at home with our dogs this summer. Keeping cool is particularly important for dogs with short snouts, elderly dogs, and dogs with thick coats who are particularly vulnerable to overheating. We all know that staying hydrated is vital, but we also need to be acutely aware of the temperature of pavements and sand on the beaches. If it’s too hot

for our feet, it will be too hot for theirs! Providing shade where we can and vigilance with signs of overheating are a must, but prevention is always better than cure. Slickers Doghouse stocks a range of products to help keep your dogs healthy and happy during the hot summer days and nights, including KeepCool coats, which have been proven to reduce a dog’s temperature to normal within ten minutes, without causing cold shock, even if they are already overheated. Freezing water on an overheated dog can be as catastrophic as the heat itself, so cool water or products such as a cooling coat are much safer and can be used indoors, outdoors, and in cars, at any time. Time for something new?

As the finally gets back to some sort of new normality albeit cautiously , many people are happily embracing a return to a more familiar way of life, including returning to work. But while some are happy to get back to the traditional to 5 and all that comes with it, many have realised it just isn’t for them anymore. Spending time at home during lockdown over recent months afforded many people the opportunity to seriously think about their future career plans, including whether starting a business or becoming self employed could be a viable option. And clearly it proved to be, as figures published by the ce for ational Statistics show a significant increase in the number of new companies created in the during the second half of 0 0. 1962, marking the bicentennial of the establishment of the family in Falmouth, Cuthbert, Moyra and their son Philip entrusted lendurgan to the ational Trust, so that the maintenance of grounds and estate could be continued and the rare beauty of this beloved family heirloom preserved and enjoyed by all. Today lendurgan offers a vibrant Camellia walk, an olive grove and apple orchard home to local varieties of apples, figs, pecans, pears and citrus fruits, as well as three beehives with an active colony of honeybees. You can take a stroll beneath the blossoming cherry trees on your way to the ancient cherry laurel hedge maze and quite literally lose yourself in the arms of the garden. But in the heart of it all, at the top of the valley garden, you can find what the ational Trust affectionately refers to as the grandfather of lendurgan’. At almost 0 years old, the iconic tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is the oldest and most impressive tree on the grounds, boasting bright tea cup owers in hues of lime green and orange in late June, and as autumn approaches the giant green leaves take on bright gold tones and signal the end of another year at lendurgan, as the garden prepares to close for winter.

estled along the glistening coast and hidden in lush woodlands amongst the ancient remains of Cornish history can be found some of the county’s proudest living treasures. We’re very lucky to now have access to so many gardens which were once private spaces for the fortunate families that owned the rich and prosperous land, and it’s down to these green fingered visionaries that we owe our thanks for the carefully tended and thriving gardens we’re able to visit today. In 1762 the Fox’s, a noted Quaker family, established themselves in Falmouth and are responsible for more than one of the shining gems we have now, including Penjerrick and Trebah, but most particularly the colourful and ourishing grounds that are lendurgan arden and state. Alfred ox set up home here with his wife and subsequent family of 12, and began to develop the layout of the garden paths which remain today, along with the iconic cherry laurel maze and orchards. The family’s investments in a ship agency presented a convenient opportunity for the acquirement of rare and exotic plant species to populate the grounds, many of which have been maintained to this day. Alfred’s fifth son eorge was a keen botanist, and after inheriting the estate in 1890 began to expand the plant collections with particular emphasis on Conifers and tender Rhododendrons. His eldest son, Cuthbert, was passed the green fingered torch in and continued to develop the gardens with his wife oyra for the next 0 years. In

A sea of bluebells at Trewidden

Tucked away in the woodland of Penwith lies another hidden gem, famed for its awardwinning oral collections and impressive exotic tree specimens. In 50, dward Bolitho bought the land known as ‘Trewidden Bal’ which is now known to us as Trewidden ouse and arden. The gardens are situated on the site of an ancient opencast tin mine dating all the way back to Roman times, evidence of which can still be seen today dward is responsible for planting the cover of woodland that keeps this secret garden from the outside world, before establishing newly introduced plants from Asia and the Southern emisphere throughout the grounds. But this visionary did not work alone, and was very fortunate to have the expertise of his head gardener, eorge addern, who worked to plant and shape the garden for 45 years to roughly the size it is today. dward’s son Thomas would go on to continue the work laid down by his father, and make the decision in 0 to fill the old opencast mine with tree ferns (Dicksonia antarctica), newly imported from Australia by Treseders nursery, creating the Tree Fern Dell. Thomas’ creativity and hard work has resulted in what is now considered the best stand of tree ferns in the orthern Hemisphere, and is a breathtaking sight to behold. Mary Williams, daughter of Thomas Bolitho, returned to her enchanting childhood home after the death of her husband in 1955 and became a huge in uence on the development of the garden,

planting the striking Magnolia hypoleuca that remains on the orth Walk herself. ow the largest of its kind in the , it has also been designated as a Champion Tree! Mary spent the rest of her days gardening with enthusiasm and joy in the wooded wonderland she was raised in. Today, Trewidden is owned by Alverne Bolitho, a cousin of Mary’s who inherited the property when she passed away in 1977. He continues to develop the garden alongside his ead ardener ichard Morton and the team, with the charming aim of keeping the garden a place of ‘peace and beauty, of constant surprise and delight’. enny lds, Land Agent, remarks on this: “Time and time again our visitors remark how Trewidden is a place of calm and tranquillity. Wandering under the lofty trees and through the maze of paths around the plant collections, which are all spectacular in their own way when in bloom, always seems to restore the soul!” nder Alverne’s stewardship the gardens were opened to the public for all to enjoy this delightful feeling. Take in the colours and scents of over 250 varieties of Camellia, bask in the glory of the five Champion Magnolia trees, and feel like a Lilliputian under the towering soft tree ferns, settled for over a century in the bowl of the mine’s remains in a handmade paradise. Overlooking the quaint village of St Mawes, with an overwhelming coastal view, sits the comparatively modern Lamorran ardens, established much more recently in , when obert and aria Antoinette Dudley-Cooke acquired an overgrown, steeply sloping stretch of pure potential. of Ischia planted a seed that, with hard work and creative determination, would turn to reality for this budding couple. Images of a romantic terraced garden with curving paths and occasional reveals of the sea would form a template for Robert, who transplanted a large collection of Rhododendrons and evergreen azaleas to make up the early plantings. Drawing inspiration from the spirit of Japanese, editerranean, and nglish gardens, Lamorran ouse ardens began to take shape. After an expansion in the mid nineties that essentially doubled the size of the garden, ead ardener ark Brent offered his expertise for the next 20 years and the grounds began to take the shape that we can see today. The garden has an unusual benefit with the sea right at its door, creating an atmosphere that wards off any frost and allows for a multitude of exotic and unusual planting choices. Lamorran also boasts a healthy collection of tree ferns and palms that ourish in this benign microclimate. This subtropical, Italianate inspired garden radiates warm visions of the Mediterranean as you wander among the temples and archways, and transports you to Venice as you walk over the bridge and lean out to look across the bay. xplore the areas of lush woodland, and discover the Japanese inspired water garden. Overall, Lamorran ardens truly embodies the guiding principle behind its design, to create ‘tranquillity and beauty in harmony with nature’. A multitude of blossoming gardens are open to us this season, and whether you’re looking for towering exotic flora to take your breath away, an insight into a secret-garden of childhood dreams, or an element of warm, far-away lands in a pocket utopia, don’t miss out on visiting a secret Cornish paradise coming into bloom this summer.

teeped in rich heritage, Salty Sea Dog sits comfortably on the Cornish coastline at Trebarwith Strand, just a few footsteps from the sand and sea. Originally built in the early 1800s by Earl Wharncliffe, the building has been a part of the landscape for over 200 years, beginning as refreshment rooms and going on to become a prominent hotel, coach house and stables. Today, Salty Sea Dog has an exceptionally well-designed modern interior with high uality fixtures and fittings and a complementary coastal poise, and although changes have taken place over the last two centuries, the property has retained its unique character and charm. Hues of silver and grey fall across the wonderfully bright kitchen space, with sunlit sparkles glinting on the quartz work surfaces as you prepare the next family meal with all the essential appliances close at hand. Two beautiful sash windows overlook the strand and invite you to watch the world go by from a seat at the rustic kitchen table in residence. With stripped pine wood oors and Chinese slate underfoot, gorgeous feature wall panels bring stylish warmth to the comfortable living room. The double bedroom has been thoughtfully designed so you can relax in comfort, with restful nautical blue and white undertones and a view of the strand. The

bunk room offers a quirky, quiet space where the kids will love to hide away, with a fresh and bright shower room to rinse away the salt and sand. Salty Sea Dog is another rare and golden opportunity to own a little piece of Cornish history, and as the property is currently a popular holiday let it comes fully furnished, with its very own parking space, so you need only turn the key and enjoy your new home.

et within a breathtaking rural landscape in grounds of about one acre, and with panoramic views over the picturesque wooded Kenwyn Valley, lies the imposing property of Penventinnie House. Built in 1868 as the farmhouse to Penventinnie Farm, the house has been the family home of the current owners for almost 40 years, and the mellow stone with granite quoins and Georgian-style windows make for the classic Cornish country idyll. The front elevation is adorned with an attractive stained-glass porch to welcome you through the door, and just to the side of the house is a fascinating Medievalstyle carved granite arch, just one of many interesting quirks that give this property so much character and charm. With six bedrooms, there’s more than enough room for a growing family and plenty of space for guests, and the excess of outside seating and patio areas centred in the garden allow ample opportunity for al fresco dining and star-lit summer evenings. The beautiful conservatory to the left of the property provides a perfect sanctuary on not-so-sunny days, and the detached garages mean vehicles can be kept safe under cover. With a spacious sitting room, dining room and rustic, open-

plan kitchen with a walk-in pantry, the house will really feel like a home. While the property sits in its own quiet sanctuary in the calm countryside, the lovely city of Truro is just down the road, so a day of shopping and lunch by the cathedral is near at hand.

REACH

We are delighted to partner with Rohrs and Rowe to offer exclusive and highly targeted property marketing to some of the wealthiest out-of-county locations.

S

ome readers may not be aware but nine times a year, we publish exclusive out-of-county editions of Cornwall Living and distribute them across three of the country’s wealthiest regions – London, the Cotswolds and Somerset. These collectively reach more than 540,000 readers and, as our exclusive outof-county property partner, Rohrs and Rowe provide at least 20 pages of property content within every edition of the magazine. Rohrs and Rowe have proven themselves to be one of the modern pioneers of Cornwall's specialist property market. Renowned for their unique take on marketing, they are never ones to stand still and so the opportunity to be the only estate agents to offer advertising in these exclusive editions of Cornwall Living magazine was the perfect addition to their already impressive array of local, regional, national and online marketing. Matthew Rowe explains: "It is a proven industry fact that even in the best of markets, professional marketing of the highest quality will enable an owner to achieve a considerably higher price for their property.” He continues: “Very few estate agents are able to offer truly specialist marketing of the type that our exclusive partnership with Cornwall Living‘s out-of- county editions enables us to offer our clients.” So what does a Rohrs and Rowe marketing package look like? With two professional photographers at their disposal, Matthew

and Martyn place emphasis on stunning photography to showcase a property and its location at its very best. These are then incorporated into every element of each property’s marketing, including brochures of the highest uality, five property marketing portals – Rightmove, On The Market, Zoopla, Prime Location, and Boomin – as well as via social media and as part of the agency’s annual 500 pages of magazine advertising, thus reaching a very large audience. “Our approach has proven to be extremely effective,” Martyn expands. “Since setting up five years ago, we have had great success in selling properties across the county, often achieving premium prices that have surpassed even our vendors' wildest expectations. This is a direct result of the best marketing presentation, adding value and attracting the best buyers in the market.” Due to continuing success and high demand for homes in the Duchy, Rohrs and Rowe are in need of more property, so if you’re looking to sell your home but have yet to find the right agent, why not give Martyn and Matthew a call to see how they could help?

DID YOU KNOW? OW? The out-of-county editions of Cornwall Living deliver the ultimate lifestyle by the sea, three times a year, to the highest-wealth areas of London, the Cotswolds, and Bath and Bristol. That’s a total of 540,000 readers each year!

A FLYING West Coast Architecture makes itself at home in Cornwall after an incredible first two and a half years.

A

start

fter opening for business in January 2019, Newquay based architectural firm, West Coast Architecture, has quickly built a reputation for passion and enthusiasm in all aspects of their field. And while it is still only a small practice, it has, nonetheless, been making waves in Cornwall’s architectural scene! With more than a decade’s combined experience in architecture and construction in Cornwall, the West Coast Architecture team have been driving their vision forward since opening, placing their focus on private residential projects, covering the Concept Design stage, Developed Design stage (usually for planning applications) and the Technical Design stage. But what really sets them apart is their level of customer service. Antonio Sánchez, West Coast’s Lead Architect, explains: “We design our projects as if we were going to live in them. We take a very personal approach, taking care of our clients and working together with them to incorporate their ideas into our designs.” In their first two and a half years alone, West Coast Architecture have been involved in almost 50 projects, ranging from home refurbishments and extensions to new builds. Their work has covered all stages of the process, from concept designs and developed design for achieving planning permission, to handling the technical designs for building regulations and construction

drawings. Put simply, just two and a half years after the firm was launched, West Coast Architecture has already proven its prestige, and with lots of new projects in the pipeline, it continues to expand. This means that if you’re looking for a team of passionate and enthusiastic young architects who love good design, to bring your project to life as if it was their own, West Coast Architecture comes highly recommended.

THE VALUE During the past year, online shopping has really taken off, forcing retailers to reassess the true value and role of their stores.

M

any stores around the country have struggled with the lack of footfall and the opportunity that comes with it to engage, face to face, with customers. That being said, certain industries have experienced growth as customers have found themselves with more time to focus on their interiors, and that includes businesses specialising in carpet and ooring. At The Carpet Trader Cornwall Ltd, for instance, the last year has been one of creativity and innovation. “We used every opportunity to engage with our customers and offer exceptional service,” explains Carpet Trader owner, April. “We even invested in building a new bespoke showroom, to improve the customer experience, with dedicated parking at the front door, all conveniently located next door to Screwfix.” With many innovative products on display in the new space, including those from Amtico, arndean, orbo, Cormar, and ibre to name just a few this is a place of discovery and inspiration for all budding home improvers. As a arndean International looring Inspire etailer’, The Carpet Trader has a complete range of wood and stone samples on display, and is looking forward to having a beautiful bespoke arndean studio installed in the autumn this year! This, April explains, will allow customers to use an interactive play and design’ table to create a personalised oor to match their individual home and style. With experience in the interior industry, April says: “We like to give the customer the ultimate showroom experience, in a relaxed, home-from-home environment.” RIGHT Perhaps Scandi simplicity is your style?

ick ill, Carpet Trader Sales anager, tells us: “With many consumers hitting a brick wall when shopping online, people want to deal with real people,” and we think he makes a good point. ortunately, with 5 years’ experience in the ooring industry, Nick is always on hand to provide a face-to-face service, which is important when buying more complex items such as carpet and ooring. ur expert sales team provide specialist advice on product choice, oor maintenance and even a free of charge quotation, helping our customers to make the right choice to suit their individual needs.” Perhaps the best reason to visit in person, however, is supporting local businesses. Local independent retailers are critical for local economies; they are places for human contact, and supporting local shops ultimately benefits the local economy something we can surely all get on board with after the struggles we’ve faced over the course of the pandemic. So, if you’re updating your home interior and are looking for the perfect ooring solutions to suit your unique home and style, as April says: “We warmly invite you to visit us at our new showroom and look forward to seeing you face to face!”

Ali Cary, owner and founder of the Cotton Mills in Truro, explains why custom shutters are the ultimate solution to dressing your windows.

 MAIN Shutters are at once versatile and beautiful

RIGHT They can be installed in any room, on any window!

W

indow shutters are, by design, incredibly versatile. They provide varying levels of light and privacy that curtains and blinds simply cannot. The style, configuration and louvre you choose determines the amount of light coming in and how easy it is to see into the room. For instance, they can be made full-height, or tier-on-tier, allowing the top to be wide open to let in light, while the bottom remains closed to maintain privacy. Win-win! There are many other perks to shutters besides versatility, and these include insulation, as they are made to fit your window. Fortunately, at the Cotton Mills in Truro, all shutters are custom built – to the millimetre – and the team even installs them for you. This means that whether your window is small and rectangular, or something more unusual like a hexagonal shape, you can rest assured that your shutters are tailored to fit your home precisely. “During the installation,” explains Ali from the Cotton ills, “a frame is fixed into the window reveal, and the panels are hung from the frame. This means fewer gaps for cold air to enter the room, making it easier to maintain your desired room temperature and even reduce your heating bills.”

Shutters are great for children’s bedrooms and nurseries too; a dim-out option is perfect for youngsters who nap during the day, and the lack of a cord means there’s nothing for curious kids to pull and break. They also promise peace and quiet, thanks to the aforementioned frame, which unlike blinds and curtains ensures that those who like to keep the window open at night needn’t put up with noisy rattling! “Whilst shutters might, in some instances, be slightly more expensive,” says Ali, “their versatility means they provide better value than curtains or blinds. If privacy, light control, e ciency and durability are important to you, there’s no better option.” In short, if you’re embarking on an interior project, whether your window dressings are the last piece in the puzzle, or you need guidance from Ali and the team of interior experts to get your entire project of the ground, be sure to give The Cotton Mills in Truro a call!

DISCOVER MORE According to Energy.gov, 30% of a home’s heating energy is lost through its windows, and a recent study commissioned by Historic England proved that shutters reduce heat loss more than blinds and curtains.

lot of us have become reacquainted with our homes over the past year or so, having spent more time inside than we’re used to, but over at Cloudberry Living the team recognise that these moments at home are important, and that with a little thought into how we arrange and adorn our interior and exterior spaces, these moments can be truly cherished and enjoyed. Their collection of simple, Scandi style products from a gorgeous selection of brands provides the ultimate choice for any visitor to the shop, with something to suit any home and add that aura of quiet charm. Whether you’re looking to introduce a stand-out element to your current interior, or rethink your home style, Cloudberry’s range of furniture, lighting and delightful décor offers a perfect solution to the living room blues. Our outdoor spaces and gardens have provided those of us lucky enough to have access to one with a refreshing sanctuary on warm days, and the team at Cloudberry have the perfect additions to offer us, with a range of sleek outdoor furniture to bring a sense of home outside, encouraging a sunlit family meal around the table on the patio. Their new hammock made from post-consumer plastic invites an afternoon of comfort under leafy green trees, and the cast iron firepit and barbe ue allow for cosy evenings spent story telling under the stars. Cloudberry embrace the Danish concept of ‘Hygge’, which promotes an atmosphere that allows for cosy, magical moments spent with friends and family, traditionally by candlelight. Originally, Scandinavian design developed as a direct result of the seasons and those materials readily available from the land, with long, dark winters being countered by bright spaces which let in and re ect as much natural light as possible. This a nity with the natural world and a focus on optimising the spaces we have lies at the heart of Cloudberry, and is a way of thinking that we could all benefit from as we emerge from a di cult time and look to our own bright spaces.

ime is a treasured commodity for many of us, and when an opportunity comes along to visit three incredible local companies in the very same building, why not embrace it? Based in an impressive showroom in Threemilestone, Truro, Annie & Maude, Cornwall Glass and Hardy Carpets have come together to offer everything you need to transform your house, each bringing their own high-quality products to the table. Whether you’re looking to furnish your oors, re imagine your home d cor, for all things glass and mirror – or, perhaps, a combination of all three – this is where you need to be. Dave and Heather Mitchell established their family glazing business, Cornwall Glass, in 1978 (originally Dave Mitchell Glass and Glazing), and worked tirelessly together to get their business off the ground and ensure that their customers got the very best of everything for all things glass and glazing. We speak to Tony Smith, Branch Manager, to find out a little more about the people behind the glass: “We aspire to give our customers a

wide range of products with experienced and professional customer service. As a company we are genuinely passionate about what we do, from cutting a replacement glass table top to supplying and installing stunning glass balustrades, while working and supporting our local communities with our Cornwall Glass Charitable Fund.” Expect the wow factor when you enter the Cornwall Glass showroom, with examples of the team’s most popular products on display, plus the county’s widest range of framed mirrors. The friendly team, with years of experience in the glass industry, are on hand to advise and work on projects large or small, offering a first class service, plus glaziers operating throughout the south west, providing a high uality, exible and professional fitting service. While you’re waiting for your glass to be cut, why not head over for a little peruse of the myriad ooring options at ardy Carpets Having been established for over 40 years, this is another family run business that’s ourished in the south west, and whether

Hunting for fresh carpets and ooring can be a little daunting, especially if you’re not sure on budget or look, but the friendly staff who walk the showroom oor are there to help, with an enormous range for you to discover at prices that won’t break the bank. Hardy Carpets offers an incredible level of support, from shop oor advice, to free measuring, and even expert fitting. An ultimate one-stop shop if you know what you’re looking for, and if you don’t! Speaking with Lynzi, Manager of Hardy Carpets, she expresses a noble company ethos: “To make all customers happy, and for each one to walk out of our showroom knowing that they have the best uality ooring at the best price from a local business.” Sometimes you just need to see something in action to be able to visualise it in your own home, and if you head upstairs to Annie & Maude – situated on the mezzanine – you’ll be able to see just that, as Hardy Carpets have supplied and laid all their ooring This company is brand new, having only started trading in May this year, but its eclectic mix of gifts and homewares is growing ever more popular with locals and visitors alike. “As part of the Cornwall Group we are the brainchild of our Chairman Mark Mitchell, who wanted to take a new direction form his well-established and well-known glass companies,” explains Kati Bawden, who manages Annie & Maude alongside Adele Payne. Inspiration for the business, and the origin of its name, comes from Mark Mitchell’s great grandmothers, Maude Parris and Annie Deacon, who Kati describes as “two rather ‘ansum Cornish maids with a passion for making a house a home”. Resourceful and imaginative, Katie explains: “They created homes that were ahead of their

time. Today we celebrate their legacy and love of eclectic home styling.” This celebration is showcased in a carefully curated collection of diverse and imaginative pieces that fill the 3,000 square foot showroom and which provide a real feast for the senses, from gifts, cards and wrapping paper, to furniture and homewares. They’ll even gift-wrap for you while you wait! With Cornwall Glass to your left, Hardy Carpets to your right and Annie & Maude above, we can’t imagine a better arrangement of local businesses to offer you everything you could need to transform your home. Time you

CAN AFFORD According to Hot Tub Help, owning your own hot tub is an investment in quality time, one that can actually be surprisingly affordable!

I

ABOVE Proper maintenance can help ensure your hot tub stands the test of time 

DID YOU KNOW? An easy but important tip is to monitor and maintain the pH levels of your water. “Test regularly with strips,” says Jon, “because if the pH is wrong, you will burn out your seals on the pumps, heaters and jets, and the average price on a pump is £300!”

n a world that's constantly being stoked by news outlets and social media looking for that sensational new angle to sell stories, wouldn t it be lovely to find a quiet corner and have some quality sensory deprivation? This is the question that Jon Pennington, founder of Hot Tub Help, poses to us. And he has a point. Every now and then we all need to escape the noise and find a way to relax. ore importantly, it s easy to forget the value of spending quality time together – away from screens and social media, completely unplugged. This is where hot tubs come in, and the first thing to say is that hot tubs are an investment in such quality time. Whether you want to connect with your kids, enjoy some time just the two of you, or simply spend a few moments away from the world, says Jon: “Buy a hot tub! You would be amazed how sitting in a tub of hot bubbly water can soothe the soul.” “Disclaimer! We don’t sell hot tubs, we just fix them,” on continues, “but we can give you plenty of tips on how to run one so it doesn’t cost you a fortune.” The first thing to ask yourself is how much insulation does your hot tub have? “Insulation and keeping your hot tub up to temperature is the number one tip for saving on electricity and keeping costs down,” says Jon.

“The second is to ask yourself whether you need a yearly service, or whether you can just look inside? A bit like checking under the bonnet of your car before a long journey, shine a torch around – catch the faults before they happen and save money!” Tip number three, is the use of vinyl cleaner. By cleaning your hot tub cover and generally looking after it, you will save money. Jon suggests something that has UV protection, water proofing and a moisturiser to feed the cover and stop it drying out. A well-maintained hot tub cover will make your hot tub look like new, and when you consider the cost of a new cover – “they cost £350 upwards,” says Jon – it makes sense to look after yours. In short, hot tubs are an investment in time spent together, and in order to protect that investment and minimise on costs, a stitch in time really does save nine! That said, if you’re unsure, it always makes sense to consult the professionals, so be sure to contact Jon and the team at Hot Tub Help, experts when it comes to fixing hot tubs in Cornwall.

ith autumn looming after some much-enjoyed summer days, a lot of us will be looking ahead to those colder evenings we can expect as the year progresses; when beach days and backyard barbeques become but a fond reminiscence of recent months, and our scarves and button-up coats start to make their first appearances. With hot chocolates and comforting soups in hand on cold, rainy days, would the image be complete without the cosiest of fires to sit beside The team over at Eden Hearth & Home have been busy preparing their showroom to make way for an exciting new fireplace experience, having built an amazing media room with all the latest electric fires on display for you to try before you buy. Eden’s owner Tracy Johnson explains: “This year has seen a huge shift in the way our customers heat their homes; the need for high heat output gas fires and burning solid fuel in the home has been replaced by the desire for eco-friendly products and more energy e cient alternatives.”

With this in mind, Tracy decided to match this new ethos with stylish fires and fireplaces whilst also being able to offer their customers a bespoke service. The den fitting teams are able to design and build you a uni ue media style fireplace to include your TV, a sound bar and of course a fabulous energy e cient gas or electric fire that will certainly keep the neighbours talking. The best part is, you get to choose every part of the fireplace individually, from built in shelving and mood lighting to the most up-todate fires on the market that offer the most amazing and realistic ame patterns, plus all the latest technology built in. Could you ask for much more Everyone’s home has its own unique style and character, and Eden Hearth & Home will have just the right thing to fit in with your current layout. “We have some of the most energy e cient gas fires on display,” says Tracy. “ rom traditional styles to modern designs we have a fire to suit all tastes. With new build properties and house renovations on the rise in Cornwall, the company has brought many of the latest fires and fireplaces together to showcase in the newly renovated showroom, meaning you can browse at your leisure and seek advice from the experts. With a number of show lodges available for purchase now, plus the release of a new phase at St Merryn that is available to pre-order, you'll be wowed by what's on offer. And the best of it is... everything is included in the price, from the clock to the cooker! All homes have access to the park's facilities and come with some amazing benefits, not least the unparalleled Cornish beauty that surrounds them. St Merryn is where lifelong memories can be made and a place of peace you can visit again and again. There are plenty of on-site facilities; little ones will love the children’s play area, and for active adults there are football and tennis courts. Dogs aren’t left out either – St Merryn prides itself on being

dog friendly and there’s even a dog walking area for your furry friend. A handy shop is stocked with all the essentials or, for a night off the cooking, why not treat yourself to a meal at the park’s pub and diner, The Venue? Step outside the park, and the whole of the glorious Camel Estuary and surrounding north Cornish coastline opens up before you. The South West Coast Path offers endless miles of cliff top trails, where you can see seabirds circling overhead and look out for local seals basking in craggy coves. For the more adventurous, watersports abound in this area of Cornwall. Whether it’s surfing on one of the world class beach breaks, kayaking or paddle boarding, each of the Seven Bays of Trevone, Harlyn, Mother Ivey’s, Booby’s Constantine, Treyarnon and Porthcothan offers an ocean playground just waiting to be explored. North Cornwall has also become somewhat of a foodie destination in recent years and there are a plethora of restaurants and cafés to enjoy. From high-end dining at Paul Ainsworth at No6 and Nathan Outlaw’s New Road and Fish Kitchen to more easy-going, but equally delicious offerings from Prawn On The Lawn, The Rocket Store and The Atlantic Bar and Kitchen, there are culinary delights at every turn. Valley Resorts has three other sites across the Duchy, all run with the same ethos in mind – to ‘live the Cornish dream’. Towan Valley, is a striking collection of eco-style cottages tucked away in a peaceful Cornish valley, just a short walk from the surfing beach at Porthtowan. Phase Two is arriving at Towan for next season, so now couldn’t be a better time to think about investing in a holiday home here. Head a little further up the coast and you’ll find Leycroft alley nestling deep in a wooded valley close to the golden sands and secluded coves of Perranporth and St Agnes. This is a magical base for friends, families and their four-legged companions looking to relax and enjoy Cornwall’s beach life. Last, but by no means least, is the recently acquired, popular south Cornwall beach resort, Millendreath. Comprising a collection of luxury self-catering apartments, a south-facing beach, and 65 glorious acres of private woodland.

HOME FOR

THE SEASON Looking ahead to keep up with the evergrowing demand for Cornish holidays.

T

here’s no doubt about it – this season has been exceptional for the travel and tourism industry here in the UK. 62% of Brits have chosen to enjoy their main holiday in the UK this year, and with Cornwall in the top three holiday destinations, it’s unsurprising that one of the leading self-catering agencies in the region, Cornish Cottage Holidays, has seen accommodation occupancy levels at capacity for much of the summer. With over 900 cottages across Cornwall, Cornish Cottage Holidays has over 50 years of experience in holiday letting, but as Commercial Development Manager, Andrew Exelby says: “The season has been unlike any we have experienced before. Throngs of people have been looking to enjoy all Cornwall has to offer… even the world leaders descended on the county this summer, a true honour!” It’s not just the peak summer months that have proven popular either – bookings for Cornish Cottage Holidays properties for October Half Term are already a massive 25% up. Looking ahead to 2022, the local company is already seeing accelerated numbers of bookings and enquiries, suggesting another momentous year is to come! With these overwhelmingly positive statistics, for those thinking of letting their holiday home there has never been a better time to start this adventure. But what do people look for in a holiday let in these post-

pandemic times? Making your property pet-friendly will definitely add appeal, and properties with hot tubs have also grown in demand. But if a hot tub seems a stretch too far, the top three sought-after features that will set your property in good stead are a little more easily achieved: a garden and outdoor space, a good location within close proximity to the beach, and lastly, good Wi-Fi. With demand for holiday accommodation outstripping supply, the team at Cornish Cottage Holidays are actively seeking new self-catering properties in Cornwall to add to their portfolio ahead of the 2022 season. If you are considering letting and would like more information on setting up your holiday home, their new property consultants would be delighted to help. Whether you are looking for income projections and booking forecasts, advice on helping your property to achieve its full income potential, or a full inventory tick list of everything your holiday home will need, the team would love to hear from you.

A new chapter blooms for an exciting cocktail bar in Wadebridge.

riginally known as Rhubarb & Sage and now re-branded as Rhubarb & Bloom, the new name couldn’t be more fitting as the world comes back to life from the pandemic, like the emergence from winter into spring. “We wanted to turn the trials and tribulations we’ve all faced throughout the pandemic and give you all something to look forward to,” says Danielle StephensRickard, who runs the business alongside partner Nick. With the bar closed, in chrysalis, transforming from one identity to another, the Rhubarb team have kept eager followers guessing on social media, with boomerang teasers and other snippets of the new-look bar. As Danielle puts it: “We knew what we had to offer would be the talk of the town! “There aren’t many bars in Wadebridge, but there are plenty of pubs and restaurants, and we wanted to stand out from the crowd,” Danielle continues. “So, we popped on our thinking caps and began undertaking the complete transformation from Rhubarb & Sage to Rhubarb & Bloom.” So what can you expect to find The best description would be a unique, independent oral gift and cocktail bar at the heart of Wadebridge. There is a beautiful range of ready-made bouquets for you to take away daily, and if you’re after something more bespoke, you can order owers for future collection or delivery – locally, nationally, or worldwide! But that’s not all. During daylight hours, the bar offers a friendly setting in which to enjoy your coffee with a slice of cake. ancy something a little stronger If so, you can enjoy an Afternoon Tipsy Tea. As Nick explains: “We specialise in brunch, lunch and afternoon tea, while you take a break from your everyday life.” As the sun descends, Rhubarb & Bloom transforms into the perfect ‘meet-up’ venue, with a buzzing atmosphere that’s superb for cocktails and gorgeous oral surroundings that transport you to far-away lands – especially during the balmy evenings of the Cornish summer and early autumn. With an ethos that’s all about gathering with friends and sharing cocktail trees and Tipsy Teas, if you’re looking for somewhere to relax with friends over a casual cocktail or two – by day or by night – look no further than Wadebridge’s Rhubarb & Bloom.

verlooking Polzeath beach, The Cracking Crab is a seaside restaurant with the best view of the surf, serving everything from light bites to seafood platters and all the bits in between. Open for lunch, dinner, teas, coffees, and plenty of ice cream throughout the week, The Cracking Crab is a family friendly and family run restaurant – the sister to The Winking Prawn in Salcombe. Wander inside and enjoy the eclectic interiors, featuring local artwork and a combination of cosy booths and tables – perfect for groups of friends, families, and couples, whether you’re popping in for a quick cup of tea and a brownie (or two) or celebrating a special occasion over dinner. As the name might suggest, the menu focuses largely on seafood, especially as they’re so lucky to have such wonderful local produce close by. However, they also try to provide something for everyone. So, if a fish feast isn’t uite your vibe they also serve juicy West Country steaks off the grill and the bar is always fully stocked with chilled craft beers, ciders and wine – including their very own bespoke cider, created in partnership with a local brewery. Classic foodie favourites include Fruits de Mer and Popcorn Shrimp in the best of Cornish surf style.

They have a small selection of gluten free and vegetarian options available too, and while the size of the kitchen makes it hard for them to stray too far from the menu, if you would like to visit for dinner and have a particular dietary requirement, just get in touch and the friendly team will do everything they can to adapt a chosen dish. In short, The Cracking Crab can be whatever you want it to be; fun for the whole family (including the dog), a hotspot for a leisurely lunch watching the surf, a resting place for a cup of tea after a walk along the coast path, or an awesome place to watch the sun setting over sundowners before supper.

arm summer days call for crisp, cool drinks in the evening light, and what could be more enjoyable than one produced in the very same county, locally sourced and expertly made? Smuggled from Cornwall is a unique collaboration between Cornwall’s oldest cider maker, Haye Farm, and Cornwall’s first plough to bottle distillery, Colwith Farm Distillery. Bill Cole from Haye, and Steve Dustow from Colwith came together, with two farms on two sides of the river with two proud farming traditions, to embrace one shared passion: to respect the integrity, heritage and history of the farms. It all began when these two friends, who share a passion for history, heritage, provenance and product integrity decided to ‘enjoy a glass and have a conversation’. The company now boasts a collection of three delicious spirits just waiting to be sampled. Its Classic, juniper led dry gin with hints of apple, citrus and spice is distilled using apples from Haye Farm, possibly the world’s oldest cider maker. The master distiller infuses the apples with botanicals from aye arm and further afield to create a true distilled gin which draws upon its unique history, heritage and provenance – 800 years of history in one bottle. Produced from the finest potatoes and distilled in tiny batches, their vodka is gently filtered then blended with the purest Cornish mineral water for a smooth and creamy result which

can be enjoyed neat on the rocks or as part of your favourite cocktail. The Barbadian rum is another favourite, a blend of column and pot distilled rum that has been aged in oak barrels for nine years, creating a complex character with notes of decadent vanilla and sweet honied fruits. Historically, rum would often taste of the sea as the smugglers dragged the barrels along the seabed to avoid vigilant customs o cers. Today, the rum is smuggled above board and allowed to rest at Colwith Farm, before being blended with the purest Cornish mineral water to create a rich and golden elixir, silky smooth to the taste. The gin and the vodka are both distilled at Colwith Farm Distillery whereas the rum, in a nod to Cornwall’s smuggling past, is ‘smuggled’ from the Caribbean, but all three embrace an incredible avour and a wonderful re ection of Cornwall’s heritage.

CLASSIC WITH The team over at Cornish Rock Gin are sure that their ever-growing collection of carefully crafted gins and rums will give you a real taste of Cornwall.

I

t was on a calm stroll across Rock beach with their four-legged companion, Blue, that Angie and George dreamt up their vision for Cornish Rock Gin, and today they have tantalising avours of gin and rum for you to try – a number that keeps going up! “The idea of Rock Gin was to have a small distillery, making gins to sell in Cornwall,” explains Angie, “but we had no idea it would do so well. Slowly we just introduced new products and last year started with the rums, thinking that if any of the products were not successful we would stop making them, but we have continued to produce everything we have brought to the market!” The quality of Angie and George’s products speak for themselves, having been made from the purest, most natural ingredients they can find, many of which are found here in Cornwall. All of the gins are sugar free, and the team consider each one to be ‘classic gins with a twist’, without the use of syrups, so the gins remain dry with subtle avours and undertones. Angie explains that with the rums, the base spirit comes from the Caribbean, but they re-distil it here in Cornwall, again with the finest ingredients they can find. “ ur Dark Spiced Pineapple

not only smells of ripe pineapple but leaves a real lingering aftertaste. The White Espresso Rum, meanwhile, is made with coffee from our nephew’s farm in Kenya.” It all started with the smooth Classic riginal in with its lingering li uorice taste, a very popular choice among the customers, and the collection hasn’t stopped growing for Angie and George. “We now have eight jewels that taste as amazing as they look, and the company continues to grow so the adventure continues. We also have six exciting rums (soon to be eight!), so we haven’t stopped yet!” With George’s personal favourite gin being the Rock Blue Angel, and Angie’s the Pink ock, it may take a few samples to find your favourite, so make sure to head over to the distillery for the next tasting session!

CORNISH

Taking inspiration from the coast, Silver Origins have had Cornwall in their hearts since 1972.

T

he boundless Cornish coastline and the curves and colours that come alongside it have unsurprisingly in uenced the team at Silver Origins from the beginning, who have developed a unique silver jewellery collection that captures the essence of Cornwall, its spectacular scenery, breathtaking natural beauty and the lifestyle of our coastal communities. As a local, family run business, Silver Origins is now being managed by three generations of family members alongside a team of dedicated staff who all play a key role in coming together to bring success to the Cornish jewellery brand. Creative Director, Marcus Price, heads up the creation of these timeless sterling silver pieces, all of which are designed in house. Having been born and raised in Cornwall, arcus has a strong a nity for the ocean and coastline, and having been a keen surfer and diver since childhood has frequently immersed himself in the wild and pure Cornish sea. It seems that salt water runs in the veins of this family, as Marcus’ father Tony Price, founder of Silver Origins, was one of the first commercial divers in Cornwall in the early sixties, and a keen long-board surfer. When inspiration strikes, new designs start out as simple pencil sketches and original moulds hand-carved out

of wax to achieve the natural organic shapes and textures that represent the signature style of the brand. Silver is then cast using the lost wax method, sanded, polished and the stones are then set by highly skilled silversmiths. Everything is handmade with attention to detail and uality for the finest finish to every single piece. “It’s so rewarding to create original and tactile handcrafted jewellery with fresh and exciting seasonal collections launching throughout the year and mid-season,” Marcus tells us. Inspiration for the collections derives from the iconic backdrop of Cornwall’s sub-tropical gardens and wildlife, rugged beaches, coastline and sea life – together with its rich Celtic heritage. This wealth of stimulation provides endless visual motives for the team to work with. Natural organic shapes, sculptured and weathered rock formations, pebbles and shells found beachcombing on the tideline, rockpools teeming with life and ocean waves curling and caressing our shores. Every piece is imbibed with meaning and intrinsic beauty, connecting the wearer to the true essence of Cornwall. Semi-precious gemstones are often featured in the designs, providing a charming contrast with the silver to enhance the spirit and character of each piece. Elegant and simple, Silver Origins’ minimalist designs embody the timeless saying that ‘less is more’, and with the variety of designs available there is something to suit everyone, from the fun and whimsical to the eternally romantic, celebrating love and life moments.

ou can find these charming pieces in one of two beautiful boutiques by the sea. One is situated in the ancient market town of Marazion, across the water from the famous St Michael’s Mount, and the other is based in the popular town of St Ives, nestled among the cobbled streets and art galleries in the creative hub of Cornwall. Visiting one of the jewellery boutiques is a real experience, with stunning contemporary displays and interiors and friendly and knowledgeable staff to help you pick out the perfect piece from the extensive range for a loved one, or yourself! The reasonable prices may tempt you to more than what you came for. “Being an independent company, we pride ourselves on a more personal and individual service,” arcus explains. “If silver rings are your passion, then don’t miss our fantastic ring bar displays where you can literally try on every style and ring size imaginable.” Each shining ring, necklace or pair of earrings is beautifully gift boxed to make the perfect present for your loved one. Silver Origins is proud to create keepsakes to be cherished and lovingly worn for every occasion, to celebrate those special memories and to keep us connected to the land that holds our hearts.

his September sees ten years since mother-daughter team, Sharon and Katie took on Truro-based womenswear boutique, Bishop Phillpott. Over the years a lot has changed, not least surviving a global pandemic, but Bishop Phillpott are continuing to bring style to the streets of Cornwall in their own unique way. Located on New Bridge Street, Bishop Phillpott continues to be one of the only boutiques to bring high-end designers to Cornwall, including Paul Smith, Weekend by MaxMara and Marc Cain. Along with these established designers, they scour the shows to bring fresh independent labels in store, carefully curating collections to bring joy and style to your wardrobe. “Over the last ten years we have seen a move towards more casual dressing, and whilst we still have those extra special pieces for occasions, we have become more focused on bringing quality pieces that are versatile, making every day dressing more exciting and luxurious!” explains Katie. With brands like American Vintage for basics and knitwear in beautiful colours, Paige jeans for the perfect fit and organic cashmere from an ukil, plus many more independent labels, the choice in store will present something to suit everyone’s tastes.

fashion

Priding themselves on their service, Sharon, Katie and their staff are there to help you enjoy the traditional shopping experience that we’ve all been missing since Covid struck. “Covid has brought to light the fact that people love a personal and friendly service,” says Sharon. “We’ve had such lovely feedback from customers since reopening, with people really enjoying being able to see clothes in real life and enjoy good old fashioned retail therapy. It’s been a real boost to hear that people really appreciate the diversity that independents can bring to the high street.” Bishop Phillpott is always evolving to keep up with trends and meet the expectations of its customers, as Katie explains: “Over the next year and beyond we’re looking forward to introducing some exciting new labels. There has been a move towards sustainability without compromising on style from our brands over recent years, which is something that we are continuing to pursue.”

T

he endless expanses of blue and green waters that meet us on the sandy shores of Cornwall have long inspired artists and creatives, and the team at Justin Duance take it one step further by using sand from our treasured beaches and physically incorporating it into the jewellery they make. The subtle sandy texture imparted by the sand combined with a signature blue sapphire captures the essence of the sea in a truly unique way. Sapphires come in every colour of the rainbow, from vibrant pinks and oranges to deep blues and reds, and while Justin Duance can source all sorts of colours, they focus on varying hues of blue, which pair beautifully with their signature sandcasting technique. A keen surfer, Justin’s silver and gold contemporary jewellery is deeply in uenced by the surrounding countryside and ocean. A few years ago, this small business pledged to only use ethical gemstones in its jewellery, and the sapphires are traced from their mines of origin right up to the piece of jewellery they are set in. “The country of origin makes its mark on the colours of the stone. Our classic deep royal-blue sapphires come from Australia or Malawi, while the Sri Lankan sapphires are a brighter blue, reminiscent of the ocean on a sunny day. American Montana sapphires are celebrated for their delicate tones of blue-green which transform under different lights, making

them really special and a firm favourite among sea lovers,” says Gemmologist, Taiman. “Because we work with small-scale suppliers, our gemstones vary and it’s always exciting to see what sapphires arrive in our shipments and working out which colour of gold will best showcase them.” All of Justin Duance’s jewellery is carefully handmade to order from the workshop near Penzance (open by appointment only) and the options for personalisation are vast. You can select the stones from a gorgeous collection, specifying size and colour, and you might even like to add a sentimental touch by choosing the beach from which the sand is taken to cast the ring. Get in touch with the team to discuss your perfect jewel, and you’ll be wearing a little piece of your favourite Cornish beach before you know it.

RIGHT A local clean up dive to remove plastic from our oceans  BELOW Environmentally conscious products with high performance

t can be hard to find light when we are exposed to daily messages about the impact we are having on our planet, causing such damage to the environment and wildlife. Be it climate change, plastic pollution, over fishing or deforestation, the list of our wrongdoings seems endless. The philosophy at fourth element leads the team to take a different track. They aren’t here to berate the purchases of single use plastic items or to bemoan the poor choices humans have made, but rather believe in celebrating the actions being taken that have a positive impact to reverse the damage already done. As a business in Cornwall mainly comprised of divers, freedivers and swimmers, fourth element sees the impact on the ocean first hand and this creates a stronger motivation to make a difference. The aim, is to work alongside, and support, the incredible people and businesses that are making positive changes to our oceans’ health. The ceanPositive concept was born when fourth element started making swimwear out of recycled nylon, regenerated from ghost fishing nets and other waste. ow, they include many other products made from a range of recycled materials, using earth friendly production techni ues and reducing the carbon footprint. By the end of 0 , the team will have completely eliminated single use plastic from all packaging This year they’ve expanded the ceanPositive movement to be more encompassing of wider issues ones where they can make change themselves and others where they

can lend their support to projects with similar aims. ourth lement has also pledged its support for Dive Project Cornwall, a new scheme that aims to involve more school children in diving, exposing them to the incredible underwater world we have right on our doorstep, thus creating a connection between them and the ocean. It is an innovative and effective way of educating the next generation of the importance of a healthy marine environment, as well as encouraging a responsibility to protect it which of course is critical for the future of our planet. ourth lement encourages all businesses to do what they can to support this exciting and uni ue project. The way that this business is run, the projects it supports along the way, and the long lasting, high performance products that the team make are intended to enable you to enjoy the water even more, giving us all something to feel positive about. ow is the time to get out there and immerse yourself in the deepest blue opportunity to make a difference for the better.

A

lchemy Tiles brings back to life the thousand-year-old craft of inlay tiles, with each one individually carved with inspiring poetry, quotes and images by Mel’s own hand. As one of the only creative tile makers in the UK still using the ancient 13th century technique of hand carving and inlay, her work has become exclusively unique. Her bespoke interior design in the form of individually created tiles has provided an opportunity for customers to have something created just for them, each piece personal and from the heart. Her innovation and unique skills have not gone unnoticed, and despite the challenges that this last year has presented, Mel Chambers of Alchemy Tiles is delighted to have been named ‘Best Hand-Crafted Tile Company’ for 2020. She is the proud winner of the SME Southern Enterprise Awards for extensive expertise and skills, dedication to customer service and client satisfaction with an on-going commitment to excellence and innovation. What’s more, she’s been nominated again for 2021! “Keeping this ancient tradition and craft alive and taking it to new heights is what gets me out of bed in the mornings and creating beautiful pieces and bespoke interiors is what makes my heart sing,” says Mel.

Mel was trained in the techniques by Iris Milward of Poetry Tiles just before she retired in 2013, and has gone on not only to keep the ancient technique alive, but to develop it further in new colours and designs, specialising in bespoke kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces. As part of her ethical and sustainable practice, a new opportunity has been created to use her craft as a force for good. She has developed several exclusive ranges for various Cornish conservation projects and charities, donating all the profits to each cause. Plant One, Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue and Cornish Black Bees are just some of the projects she is working with, and she’ll be launching these pieces at her annual exhibition in Port Navas from 27th to 30th August this summer. The heart of Alchemy Tiles is about you, the customer, and creating something that is not only personal, but that stands the test of time. By keeping this magical ancient craft alive and using it as a force for good, Alchemy Tiles continues to have people and the planet at the heart of everything it creates.

ART

A FORCE Nestled in the heart of Penwith’s Tin Coast, you’ll find a unique, ambitious and awardwinning art-space – the Jackson Foundation.  ABOVE Discover the work of Kurt Jackson and other artists in this world-class art gallery

for change

H

oused within a massive ex-industrial building in the thriving former mining town of St Just-in-Penwith, the Jackson Foundation was set up by world-renowned contemporary artist Kurt Jackson and his wife Caroline to host an annual programme of quality contemporary exhibitions, working in partnership with a variety of environmental and nonprofit organisations. n display is an ever evolving schedule of works and exhibitions that celebrate and champion the arts, our landscape and the natural world around us. This exciting and versatile world-class art gallery is free to the public, bridging the gap between public and private art centres and is the ideal venue to view Kurt Jackson’s and other important and upcoming artists’ eclectic range of creative expression encompassing painting, photography, ceramic, sculpture, poetry, installation and film. Run by husband and wife team Fynn and Zinzi Tucker, this environmentally focused art space is a green-built, sustainably managed, carbon positive concern. Powered by an array of high e ciency solar panels and ground source heat pumps, the Jackson Foundation goes further by delivering paintings throughout Cornwall in one of its two zeroemission fully electric cars. Creating local employment, raising awareness and funds for groups working to protect the environment and giving back to a community that has been home to the to the Jackson family for over 30 years, the

Foundation works to become a positive force for change. The Jackson Foundation aims to provide a space, open to one and all, to re ect on our symbiotic relationship with the natural world, and the rewards to be found by taking a step back and looking around; to see the world through artists’ eyes. This autumn’s big upcoming show is Kurt Jackson’s Kenidjack: A Cornish Valley – a sister exhibition to 2017’s Cot: A Cornish Valley – a stunning collection of paintings and sculpture that follows a stream from its source on the moors above St Just, down through the valley and into the sea, taking in the sights, sounds, history, heritage and wildlife along the way.

any years ago, a small dedicated group of people living in Mousehole formed a committee of Trustees to see if they could raise funds for converting the old Duck Street Store and pilchard pits into a community hall for the village. After many years they succeeded in getting a Lottery Grant of over £500,000, and the beautiful facility we know today was created. Simon Weston OBE and Ken Howard OBE RA became Patrons of the Hall in 2014. The all was o cially opened in 0 with a few representatives from all the groups in the village and others who had been involved in its early development. There was later a Royal opening by Prince Michael of Kent. In normal times, explains Judy Joel, one of the Hall’s Trustees: "Much of the Hall’s income comes from hosting events. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a major impact on that income, but we don’t want to reduce our community outreach work when it is needed more than ever. In fact throughout the pandemic our dedicated staff – Tamsin (Community Manager), Sarah (Finance and operations Manager) and Donna (Events and Marketing) have worked tirelessly by delivering gifts of 'Smile Bags' to local people who were self-isolating, or who were alone or frightened. They also ran a help-line, and administered grants to people in financial need and supported the local Covid-19 volunteers network." As well as all that, they have worked hard to support the community in Mousehole through a range of projects including developing a community garden with Mousehole School, and are running a summer school again this summer – offering 80 free places for children from low-income families. They also offer free IT support sessions. To help keep such projects running,

the charity has decided to run an online art auction. Featuring more than 230 pieces of art, including a painting of Mousehole Harbour by Ken Howard OBE RA, there are also works from a number of other local artists, all of whom are donating at least 50% of the proceeds, and in some cases 100%! “The funds we raise from the online art auction will help us to continue to reduce isolation and increase wellbeing in Mousehole,” says Judy – something that’s impossible to put a price on, but which unfortunately does re uire funds. To find out more about the auction, to place a bid, or to find out how you can help Solomon Browne Hall continue its vital work in the Mousehole community, be sure to visit the website.
