GMTRC is serious about horsing around

For humans, interaction and physical contact with some animals can be soothing, intriguing or even therapeutic. Count horses among that group of special animals.

The healing power of horses is the premise upon which Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) is founded.

“There is a unique bond that can be found with a horse,” said Stephanie Fleck, GMTRC’s program director. “Science is starting to catch up and find out what

horsemen have known for centuries. (Horses’) ability to read body language is higher than any other therapeutic animal. Horses can feel a human heartbeat from 4 feet away.”

“When you enter into a barn, you’re entering into that relationship,” continued Fleck. “If you come in with all this baggage, they pick up on that. That’s why equine therapy is so beneficial. You can’t lie to a horse.”

Located on 30 acres at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, GMTRC uses equine therapy to help at-risk individuals - folks with mental and physical disabilities, people with autism, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, inactive seniors, even some without a formal diagnosis. Through its lessons, programs and activities, GMTRC works with people from

ages 4 to 80, both in one-on-one and in group settings. More than 200 people are served each year.

They like to cruise. They like to eat. They like to tinker. And they love to fly.

Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 540 of Smoketown’s next event is its big one. Participants will be driving in cars and dropping out

of the skies to get there.

“Some people will fly in from within a 100-mile radius, just for the fun of it,” said Doug McGinnis, president of EAA Chapter 540. “Just for breakfast and to socialize with like-minded people. Some people fly in, in the planes they built. For some, it’s an excuse to get out for a

GMTRC is home to 10 horses. Its facilities include an indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding arena and spaces to ride in nature. But some individuals also benefit from simply taking care of the horses.

“We love and rely on our horses. They’re providing the services,” said Fleck. “A lot of people have heard of us, but they really don’t

“There’s no way to replicate the movement of a horse, and it’s very beneficial and very therapeutic,” said Fleck. “People find the movement of a horse to be very calming. Our students may be able to connect with their equine partners in ways they can’t with human relationships. It’s having fun with your horse. It helps progress them in their everyday lives.”

The email from the Witmer family to David S. Thompson, Paradise Township manager, said that the family wanted to donate two youth-sized picnic tables in memory of their son, Zane. “We can create an environment for families to make lasting memories together. We hope that this donation will enhance the overall park experience and bring joy to all who visit,” the family stated.

The tables were readily

accepted for placement in the park on Aug. 7. “I’m inspired by your motivation to transform grief into a positive and lasting impact,” wrote Thompson in response.

On Aug. 7 at 11 a.m., the Witmer family - David and Jennifer and their children David Jr. and Caitlyn - met with Paradise Park manager Adryan Yothers at the park, 6 London Vale Road, Paradise. Two youth-sized picnic tables were stacked in a blue trailer painted with web addresses

for the Zane A. Witmer Memorial Foundation.

Father and son removed the two tables, which were placed on the corners of a playground adjacent to one of the park pavilions.

“We were last here (in the park) in 2017,” recalled Jennifer, who noted that David Jr. was part of the Scouting program that met in a building in the park. “We would come down here to play.” Jennifer recalled the family taking part in the annual Easter egg hunt held in the park, as well. The family has placed 14 picnic tables in area parks, including tables in Strasburg and Bird-in-Hand.

The Witmer family lost its youngest son, Zane, age 2 and a half, in August of 2017 in Fort Myers, Fla. Jennifer explained that while the Witmers were moving a family member to a new home, Zane disappeared. David later found

the toddler in the pool. Zane died at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers.

Following Zane’s death, the family founded a nonprofit organization with the mission of raising awareness of and preventing childhood drowning.

“We do water safety education in the community,” explained Jennifer, noting that the foundation offers life jackets for area residents to borrow. “I am certified to teach survival swim lessons,” she stated. “I teach babies from six months to self-rescue.”

Each fall, the family loads the trailer with donations for the hospital where Zane died. “(Zane’s) birthday is Nov. 21, so every year on his birthday, we take 1,121 blankets to the hospital where he passed,” explained Jennifer.

A yearly golf outing helps to fund foundation activities. The third annual tournament will be held at Fairview Golf Course, 2399 Quentin Road, Lebanon, on Friday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and a buffet luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. Jennifer said that the organization is looking for golfers to take part in this year’s event by registering at https:// becauseofzane.org. More information about the organization may also be found by searching for “Because of Zane” on Facebook.

Supported by a pool of 150 volunteers, GMTRC employs 10 staff members, three of whom are full time. GMTRC staff members are trained, but they are not licensed therapists or counselors.

“We have a large demand for services,” said Fleck. “Our services are provided by trained and certified staff, but we are not licensed therapists. We work on horsemanship goals. Therapists would work on clinical goals. There is a distinction there.”

Financed through

donations, fundraising and grants, GMTRC began as Lancaster County Therapy Riding with seven students in 1981. In the beginning, the organization was operated entirely by volunteers.

“We’ve grown and grown over the years, and we’ve been able to add paid staff,” said Fleck. “We’re kind of poised for another growth period. We’re working hard to expand our services. Currently, our wait list is way too long. We’re looking at how to meet the needs of the community.”

Lancaster County veterinarian Bob Stoltzfus is the author of a new book, “Where the Grass Grows Greener - Inspirational Stories from a Lancaster County Veterinarian.” The book features 23 stories about Stoltzfus’ personal life and his life as a veterinarian.

Stoltzfus, who spent 42 years as a full-time bovine veterinarian, grew up on a 142-acre dairy farm in Oley. After graduating from Christopher Dock High School in Lansdale, he enrolled in Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) in Harrisonburg, Va., where he was in the pre-med program, graduating with a degree in biology. He went on to receive his veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania. EMU is also where he met his wife, Joyce, whom he married in 1973. Bob and Joyce have three children and seven grandchildren.

In 1980, Stoltzfus partnered with Drs. Chris Barton and Bob Munson to form Lancaster Veteri -

nary Associates. In 2002, Dr. Bridget Griffin joined the group. The practice is almost exclusively bovine with the workload now split between five veterinarians.

In 2022, Stoltzfus backed off from the physical demands of daily farm visits to focus on providing nutritional consulting services to nearby dairy farms, which range in size from 60 cows to 2,500 animals. The switch from full-time veterinarian to part-time consultant created a schedule with fewer daytime obligations, allowing him time write the book.

Stoltzfus noted that while “Where the Grass Grows Greener” is written for a general audience, he thinks farmers will appreciate seeing the veterinary side of farming from a veterinarian’s point of view.

In addition to personal stories about loss, the book includes stories about Stoltzfus’ trips to Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan to consult with dairy farmers in those countries.

Shortly before the publica-

tion of “Where the Grass Grows Greener,” Stoltzfus traveled to Israel, where he toured holy sites for three days and then spent a week doing farm chores for farmers near Gaza who were called to active duty as part of Israel’s continuing war. Stoltzfus’ son Kendal accompanied him to Israel. For more information or to purchase a copy of the book, visit www.mast hof.com and search for the book by its title.

flight. They’ll all hang out for a while and fly home.”

EAA Chapter 540 will host its fifth annual Fly-In/ Cruise-In event on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Smoketown Airport, 311 Airport Drive, Smoketown. The event is much more than a breakfast/lunch fundraiser to help underwrite the chapter’s operating expenses.

every month at 6 p.m. at its hangar at Smoketown Airport. Founded in 1953, EAA is an international organization headquartered in Oshkosh, Wis., and boasting 300,000 members from 1,000 chapters.

Breakfast will feature the chapter’s Amish baked French toast, pancakes, eggs, sausage, potatoes, coffee and orange juice. Then, around 10:30 am., a lunch consisting of sloppy joes, hot dogs, ice cream and soft drinks will be served.

“It’s pretty festive,” said McGinnis. “It’s casual. These folks are very friendly. A lot of them know each other. It’s an annual thing we do. At the end of the day it’s a fundraiser, but we want it to be an event the community can enjoy.”

“The event has grown, and the whole chapter has grown,” said McGinnis. “(The chapter) was at a point nearing extinction. Now it’s a very vibrant chapter. We’ve gotten some legs under the chapter. Now we’re trying to take it to the next level, with the focus on learning. We want people to engage with the aviation community, to learn about it and possibly get involved with what we’re doing.”

For additional information about Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 540, go to https://chap ters.eaa.org/eaa540.

Part car show, part airplane display, EAA Chapter 540’s Fly-In/Cruise-In event will spotlight nearly 100 flying machines, some of which have been built by hand at home, and about 100 ground vehicles of all makes, models and eras. One of the highlights of the event will be the Young Eagle Flights, an opportunity for children ages 8 to 17 to take a ride in an airplane free of charge.

“It’s a two-pronged event for aviation enthusiasts and car enthusiasts,” said McGinnis. “Some people just enjoy watching airplanes come and go. It’s an opportunity for folks with an interest in aviation to get together and share their passion. We want people to understand what we do. We want to engage the youth and get them thinking about aviation.”

Organizers of the event are hoping to make $3,000 for EAA Chapter 540. Some 400 people could attend.

“(Proceeds) will go into our general budget and be used to pay operating expenses of the chapter,” said McGinnis. “It’ll help with our restoration project (rebuilding a donated 1947 Aeronca Chief airplane), which is a learning experience. It’s fairly expensive to keep things going. With our resources, we can try to keep those expenses down.”

Conference will offer resources for suicide prevention

The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition will hold its annual conference on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the DoubleTree Resort located at 2400 Willow Street Pike in Lancaster. The event will include a talk from a keynote speaker, breakout sessions and training resources on topics related to mental health and suicide prevention.

Registration will be available online until Saturday, Aug. 31, and it will include a lunch and snacks. To register, visit https://mhalan caster.org/conference.

This year’s keynote speaker is Matt Dorgan, founder and chief executive officer of Building Bridges for Brianna. Dorgan created the organization after the loss of his 15-year-old daughter to suicide in 2020. Building Bridges for Brianna, which is based in York, seeks to prevent suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury throughout local communities and to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in various breakout sessions during the conference, and each session will offer information on a specific topic. The sessions will feature discussions on how to use mindfulness to improve student executive functioning, the latest

research on suicide prevention and various other mental health-related subjects.

In addition to the keynote address and breakout sessions, the conference will feature Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training. QPR functions as the mental health equivalent of CPR, and it serves as a tool to help identify when someone may be struggling with mental health or suicidal thoughts.

“Coming to this event will equip people with a lot of information, and it’s a great opportunity for people who want to become more involved with suicide prevention efforts,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster County. “Like our program manager Dave

Krahling says, everyone is on the front lines of suicide prevention.”

The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition has hosted the annual conference for several years, and the schedule has been modified this year to feature more breakout sessions and information about suicide prevention strategies. “Our main goal is to bring stakeholders, educators, consumers and other community members together to gain

skills and share the goal of preventing suicides,” McDevitt said.

MHA of Lancaster County has several initiatives that aim to decrease suicide rates in the area, including an upcoming campaign to raise awareness of gun safety. The organization also has several programs slated for September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month.

Volleyball tournament to celebrate recovery

The 11th annual Nicole Conway Recovery Volleyball Tournament will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fairview Park on Fairview Road in Columbia. Each year, the event brings together community members, public figures, local businesses, and behavioral health providers. It offers a platform for individuals in recovery to share their stories, for allies to offer support, and for everyone to connect with prevention, treatment, and recovery programs available throughout southcentral Pennsylvania.

This year’s event is presented by the Recovery Opportunity & Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity that manages a fund directly benefiting children who have lost their parents to overdose.

Teams of five will compete in the double-elimination tournament, with prizes for the winners. Registration is open, with a set fee per team.
