Mount Joy To Host Festival Of The Arts BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, art will be in the spotlight in downtown Mount Joy. Main Street Mount Joy will host the third annual Festival of the Arts from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday and

teachers and The Edible Classroom, a Washington Boro-based organization. Kraybill installed a school garden earlier this year, and every day students get outside to get their hands dirty while learning. The Kraybill garden came together after a chance meeting between Grace Julian, who runs The Edible Classroom with Beth Horst, and a parent at Kraybill. They started talking about gardening, and the parent mentioned that Kraybill would love to have a garden. It just so happened that The Edible Classroom was looking for a space to create a community garden, since its other spaces in the county are school-specific. Although this garden is located at Kraybill, it will be the site of a summer camp open to the community this summer. Kraybill principal MJ Smith loved the

idea of a school garden, and soon parent volunteer Aja Sides was on board. It turned out both Julian and Sides are certified Penn State Extension Master Gardeners, and they quickly bonded over their shared love of plants. Sides’ husband built raised garden beds in front of the school; families donated watering cans, hoses and tools; and within weeks, the garden was ready for students. “When this whole idea first started, I wasn’t quite sure how it was going to go, but everything fell right into place,” Sides remarked. “We’ve had no hiccups. That just signals that this garden was meant to be.” Led by The Edible Classroom staff, students will be planting various crops including radishes, peas, beets, kale, tomatoes, corn, peppers and squash. Pollinator gardens will be planted at the corners of the garden to attract bees and butterflies. For seventh-grader Nathan Shertzer, the garden offers a chance to do something he really loves. “It’s fun to watch the plants grow and to taste the food (we harvest),” he said, adding that he hopes to continue to help with the garden over the summer.

For the past few weeks, artists have been painting at outdoor spots all throughout Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. They are part of the first River Towns Plein Air event, and their final products will be displayed at an art show and competition at Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., on Friday, April 23, through Sunday,

from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. “This is a free, walkable, familyfriendly art festival,” said Dave Schell, executive director of Main Street Mount Joy. “We will have artists located inside businesses along Main Street, and a map will be provided for people to use to walk from space to space.” Artwork displayed will include painting, photography, ceramics, stained glass, wood and jewelry. Artists will be on site with their artwork, and art will be for sale. “Artists will be present at their locations both days, so you are free to use both days to walk the event,” Schell said. He noted that the festival helps to spotlight both the artists and the businesses who call Mount Joy home. “This event is a way to introduce our community to local, talented artists and allow the artists to display their work,” See Festival pg 3

Painter James Hecker will display works like this one at the Festival of the Arts in Mount Joy.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Joanna Spicer believes art can bring people together. “Community outreach and work is important to me,” said the textile artist. “Art is a therapeutic, friendly and fun way for me to connect with others.” Spicer will showcase her work in an exhibit titled “A Spice of Life” in the cottage at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia. The exhibit will be held on Friday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, April 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. Spicer’s exhibit will be a fundraiser for the cemetery, which relies on funding for a variety of reasons. “Nonprofit organizations such as the Mount Bethel Cemetery had to cancel all fundraising events (this past year) due to the pandemic,” said Claire Storm, a member of the

be her first time exhibiting her own work at the cottage. “I’ll be showcasing a variety of weavings and fabric pieces and possibly some prints,” she said. In addition to working with the cemetery committee, Spicer has organized other art events for local individuals and organizations, and she works with the Lancaster Office of Aging and Lancaster Creative Factory as an online art instructor for senior classes. She also completed two murals in Columbia one at Coffee and Cream café and one at Locust Street Park.

Spicer said supporting the Mount Bethel Cemetery is important because the site has historic significance in the community. According to the nonprofit’s website, the cemetery dates to the 1720s and is the oldest burial ground in continuous use in the Columbia area. “Not only is the show a great opportunity for community outreach, but it’s also an opportunity to support a group that preserves the history of our town so that the younger generation will have an idea of the importance of these places,” Spicer stated. “It’s also a great opportunity to come See Art Exhibit pg 5

Some artists have not displayed their artwork before, so this can be their first time taking the step to publicly display their artwork.” Approximately 10 businesses will host artists for the festival, with some having room for more than one artist, Schell noted. Hines said painting en plein air provides artists with a unique way to create their works. “It’s a challenging way to paint,” she explained. “Factors like the weather and wind can make it challenging. The shadows change, too, so what you’re painting may look one way and then an hour later, it looks very different.” For more information on River Towns Plein Air, visit www.marietta artalive.com/pleinairevent.

The show will run on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.; on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. River Towns Plein Air is a project of Marietta Art Alive! (MAA), a group that promotes the enjoyment, creation and awareness of visual arts and has partnered with Rivertownes PA USA for this event. “Plein air is becoming a really big thing with artists across the country,” said Marita Hines, a member of MAA. “I’ve participated in plein air art competitions regionally, and many of the other artists participating in this event have also.” When the members of MAA came up with the idea for the event, they weren’t sure how it would be received by the art community. They were pleasantly surprised. “We have

60 artists participating, and we had to cut it off at 60,” Hines stated. “We actually have a wait list. We have artists coming from five states Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania.” The public was invited to watch the artists in action at locations throughout the area, Hines said, noting that the community could see the art being made and then get excited to view the result at the art show. Each artist can display up to three works for the art show and can enter two into the competition, which will offer several awards including a People’s Choice award. The Juror of Awards for the show will be artist Julie Riker. Proceeds from sales of artwork will benefit Marietta Community House. The location is the original home of the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, and the school will partner with MAA to offer a free intergenerational plein air drawing session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Donegal Baseball Grabs Another Victory, Tops A-C

Continuing to show improvement, Donegal baseball tallied their second win on a trip to AnnvilleCleona last Wednesday. The Indians racked up 12 hits in the 8-2 triumph, with Colin Eckinger collecting three of those hits. Multiple hits also came from AJ Small, Micah Brown, and Landen Baughman with two apiece. Baughman and Eckinger were first to score, giving Donegal the early 2-0 lead in the third, and Baughman’s double in the fifth inning kick-started a rally that led to four runs as the Indi-

ans started to pull away 6-2. “We hit and were able to get our run game going,” noted head coach Jeff Hartman. “We got a lead and played aggressively.” Nick Eichelberger got the win on the mound, throwing six innings, scattering four hits, one run, and one walk while striking out two. “We got a great outing from Nick Eichelberger. He worked ahead and was in command the entire game,” Hartman praised the junior who threw 15 first pitch strikes. Caden Evans came in from the bullpen to close and struck out three. “Caden Evans finished up with

another solid performance,” added the coach. Tuesday, the Tribe hosted Manheim Central and got behind 4-2 in the first, leading to a 10-2 Barons victory. Small was on the mound for Donegal and was saddled with the loss after two innings, allowing four hits, three runs, and striking out two. Donegal gathered three hits in the evening, supplied by Joel Grillo, Baughman, and Brown. Grillo’s first inning at bat featured an RBI double, scoring Small, and Baughman’s heads up base running scored Donegal’s other run in the same inning. SOFTBALL Pitcher Cara Biesecker picked up three consecutive wins as Donegal improved their overall record to 5-2. Last Wednesday the club needed

just four innings to take down Annville-Cleona, 16-1. Biesecker lasted all four innings, striking out three while allowing just one hit, one run, and zero walks. Biesecker also played a pivotal role in the offense, collecting a pair of hits along with Bella Mackison, Natalie Colwell, and Emma Garber who each had two. Colwell and Mackison each batted in four in the runaway win. On April 12th, the Lady Indians overcame a 4-1 deficit to triumph over Manheim Central 8-4. After watching four Baron runs cross the plate during their first at bat, Donegal retaliated when Mackison crushed a line drive into left for a triple, scoring Biesecker. They still trailed by three until the bottom of the third, when they produced their first of two three-run innings. In her next at bat, Mackison doubled to score Emma Miller. Madeline Gohn’s sacrifice fly scored Aysha Gibbs and Colwell’s single pushed Julianne Wheeler across to level the scoreboard at 4-4.

Lancaster Mennonite on April 12th. The girls picked up a 130-18 win and the boys ran away with a 121-6 victory. Freshman Nya Bantum was a fresh face to shot put, competing in the event for the first time and snatching a first place with her 28-4 effort. Katherine Rupp also had a great day in the throwing events winning the javelin, and taking second in both the shot put, and discus, while teammate Emily Kreider claimed the discus win. Jumping victories came from Lillian Stehman in the long, Sarah Hinkel in the triple, and Anna Brubaker in the high. Tabitha Clark vaulted her way to a first place with a 7-6 pole vault. Hinkle also had success in the hurdle events, winning both the high hurdles and the 300 hurdles, and Brubaker added a pair of sprinting wins to her resume with top times in the 100 and 400. Continuing the Donegal dominance in the races were wins from Faith Garber in the 200, Clark in the 800, Amanda Fry in the 1600, and Myra Naqvi in the 3200. For the boys, the throwing events also produced a Donegal highlight, featuring double wins for Zack Nissley in the javelin, and the shot put, and a discus success from Owen Kling. “Owen Kling and Zack Nissley have been showing excellent leadership in the throws,” commended coach Bryce Sadler. Points poured in from all angles, not the least of which included Jackson Dearborn’s sweep of the jumps, winning the long, the triple, and the high jump. Mark Overlander owned the pole vault with a 6-6 victory. In a Donegal sweep of the sprints, Cristian Almanza won the 100 and 200, Logan Fry took the 400, Hunter Gehman the 800, and Brock Overlander covered the distance events with wins in the 1600 and 3200. Grace Graham came up big with a single in the fourth which led to her scoring the go-ahead run on a Baron error. Mackison finished the day with a single, double, and a triple for three hits and three RBIs. Gohn’s produced three hits and one RBI, and Miller supplied two hits and an RBI. Biesecker earned the win, pitching all seven innings allowing four runs, nine hits, and striking out two. A 9-8 victory over Cocalico on April 9th, featured not one, but two Mackison home runs. Once again, the Indians came from behind after Cocalico gained a 3-0 advantage in the first. Mackison’s first homer brought in Biesecker to put Donegal on the scoreboard with two runs in the third. The fourth inning churned Indian momentum with four runs scored to a take the lead 6-4, featuring a triple from Gohn, a double from Biesecker and a single from Mackison. A three-run homer from Cocalico in the sixth put the Eagles back in the driver’s seat temporarily, holding an 8-7 edge, but Mackison’s second homer tied it up at eight. Donegal defense got the job done, keeping the Eagle’s scoreless in the seventh with two ground outs and one of Biesecker’s eight strikeouts. Esther Myers set the tone for Donegal’s final at bat crushing a triple into center and Miller came through with a walk off single to score Myers for the win. Monday and then Northern Lebanon Tuesday. Jacob Erb, Evan Stehman, Akilan Murugesan and Luke Yunginger each gained a singles and doubles victory and Landon Keller and Benjamin Hallgren teamed up for the seventh Donegal point against the Raiders on Monday. “The team has responded well to the long days,” noted head coach Trent Hoffmaster. “I am proud of their hard work during the last two weeks.” Stehman and Erb have both maintain undefeated singles records and are now 9-0 turning into the latter half of the season. Even some of the losses have proved to bolster the Donegal team, when efforts such as Akilan Murugesan’s matchup against Freddie Bloom of Lancaster Country Day, resulted in a two-hour showdown on April 8th. Murugesan eventually succumbed 64, 7-5 but proved he had what it takes to compete at an extremely high level. “The effort was outstanding against one of the best players in the league,” credited Hoffmaster.
