The world is a better place when we all work together to support each other. That’s the idea behind an initiative organized by businesses in Mount Joy.
Give & Grow Mount Joy brings together small businesses in the town that are collecting items to donate to local organizations, choosing a different nonprofit to support each month.
It’s spearheaded by Lisa Wilbert, owner of Ladybug Suds N’ Scrubs; Collette Wagman, owner of Moon Raven Alley; Alecia Cobb & Sharon Granger-Kreiser, owners of Our Crafty Ways; and Jen Angeles, owner of 2FAB Weight Loss and Fitness Support.
“The concept for this collaboration came from our mutual recognition of the importance of giving back and engaging with our community,” explained Angeles. “While Mount Joy is a fantastic town, there are areas where support is needed. We decided that focusing on a different cause or topic each month would be a great way to address local needs, increase community involvement and raise awareness. This approach will also help strengthen our sense of community, as it fosters support, connection and belonging among residents.”
Choosing organizations to support has been an easy process so far, she shared, because the needs are great in the community.
“Recently the food bank posted on social media that they were in need of nonperishable food
items, so we chose to support the food bank in August,” she explained. “In September, we are supporting Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), a nonprofit organization located on Main Street.”
Items needed for DSAA include shampoo, bar soap, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant and socks. Donations will be used to stock personal care
kits the organization provides to recovery houses throughout Lancaster County.
September is Suicide Awareness Month and National Recovery Month, Angeles said, noting that this is the theme of September’s Fourth Friday in Mount Joy, which will take place on Friday, Sept. 27. Building Bridges for Brianna, an organization dedicated to suicide prevention, will have

Hosted by the Council of Friends of Public Libraries of Lancaster County and Midtown Scholar Bookstore-Cafe, the author event will raise funds for

all of the public libraries in the county, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, who is a member of the Council of Friends.
“This is a really wonderful event, because no matter where you live in Lancaster County, this event will support your public library,” she said. “Our proceeds are divided between all 17 libraries, the Bookmobile and the Be READy Rover, which focuses on early learning.”
Established in 2000, the Council of Friends of Public Libraries is composed of volunteers who are committed to promoting reading countywide. Over the years, the organization has raised more than $229,000 for local libraries.
Steinhauer said ticket sales for the author event have been brisk, but the space at Calvary Church can hold just over 2,000 people, so there is plenty of room for everyone.
age and integrity, who both loved and accepted love.”
Steinhauer said Penny’s books are also popular because they bring a cozy familiarity to readers, even though they are murder mysteries.
GEARS will offer activities to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for residents. To register or for more information, visit www.getintogears .org or call 717-367-0355.
“There’s a core group of Louise Penny fans who are very loyal to her and love her books,” Steinhauer remarked. “They love that the books are an ongoing series, like a soap opera, with the main character showing up in every one. People get very attached to that character.” Penny has shared that her late husband, Michael, inspired the character of Armand Gamache, and Penny described Michael as “kindly, thoughtful, generous, a man of cour -
“When someone opens a Louise Penny book, they know what they’re going to get,” she said, noting that all of the books in the Gamache series are set in Three Pines. Penny’s books have won multiple honors, including nine Agatha Awards, given to mystery books, and they have been translated into 31 languages.
Although fans of Penny’s books will be drawn to the author’s talk, Steinhauer noted that the Council of Friends’ events bring in a wide audience.

The hoedown will include fall-themed games, arts and crafts, activities, snacks, and dancing. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 4.
“We have some fans of the event itself, not just the author,” she said. “We have people who love being at an event where the main focus is authors and their writing style. They have the freedom to ask the author questions during a question-and-answer portion of the event. We open it up to the audience so people feel a real connection with the whole process of being an author. We also have people who feel closer to these authors who they have admired for years by coming into the library and checking out a book, and now they get to meet them in person.”

As summer winds down, the residents of St. John’s Herr Estate are ready to serve up fun, flavor and fantastic finds during the annual Fall Fest. The event will be held at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The indoor yard sale will feature a large variety of items, said Carolyn Livingston, who is helping to organize the event.
“We have it set up in departments,” she said.
“We have jewelry. We have baked goods. We line up paintings along the walls in the second-floor hallway. We have items for the kitchen, decorative items, puzzles, seasonal items, electronics, linens. We have oodles and oodles of books, CDs, DVDs and other mixed media.”
As resident Mary Miller stated, “You could almost decorate your entire apartment with everything you find here.”
New this year, visitors to Fall Fest will have the opportunity to win a handmade quilt as well.
Along with yard sale
items, Fall Fest will feature a variety of food. Baked goods prepared by residents will be for sale, as well as hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages. Chicken corn soup, prepared by the St. John’s Herr Estate chef, will be available by the bowl or quart.
“People can take their food to go, or they can sit in our dining room and eat here,” Livingston said.
Fall Fest has been held at St. John’s for more than 20 years. Items for sale are donated by residents and their families, and a group of people helps to sort and price everything.
“Originally, we started sorting and pricing a few weeks before Fall Fest,” Livingston said. “Last year, we started in April. This year, we started in March. We had so much fun. On Saturday mornings, we would get together and sort and price. We just had a great time.”
Over the years, Fall Fest has grown significantly, she shared. It started out just in the chapel of the residence but has since moved into neighboring spaces.
“We’ve had to keep expanding,” she said. “There are items in the

Proceeds from Fall Fest are used for a variety of purposes, including to provide holiday gifts for staff and residents in personal care, as well as supporting St. John’s benevolent fund and local organizations such as Hands Across the Street, the Alzheimer’s Associa -
tion, the Columbia Public Library and Bookmobile and children’s programs of Luthercare, the parent organization of St. John’s Herr Estate.
“This is our major fundraiser,” said resident Gloria Gordon, who added that Fall Fest will offer something for everyone. “The prices are great. Everything is priced to sell.”
Fall Fest is a cash-only event. Free parking is available in a large lot at St. John’s Herr Estate.

“We also are reaching out to the school district, local churches, community members and other local nonprofits to help identify areas of need,” Angeles said.
It’s easy for community members to participate in Mount Joy Give & Grow, she said, noting that the group will post each month’s organization’s needs on its Facebook page, “Give & Grow Mount Joy,” and people may drop off items at any of the participating businesses. While the organization to support will change monthly, the businesses will be ongoing drop-off locations for the Mount Joy Food Bank.
“Donating what you
can, whenever you can, is always appreciated. This includes not just physical or monetary contributions, but also your time, spreading the word and simply showing kindness,” Angeles commented. “These efforts all contribute to building a stronger community.”
The goal of Give & Grow Mount Joy is to give back and strengthen the community in a meaningful way, she said.
“This is important because life can be challenging, with many ups and downs both personally and professionally,” she remarked. “A little grace and empathy can make a big difference. Offering various ways to contribute as different topics arise enables many small actions to come together and create significant impact.”

The curriculum, by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden, and Terrance J. O’Rourke, will be taught by Jeff Hoffer. Participants must be in the 10th grade or older.
Space is limited to 10 people, and registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The fee includes the textbook.

Angeles said the group hopes Give & Grow Mount Joy will continue indefinitely. “If you have a suggestion for a monthly focus, please share it with us,” she stated. “We’ll discuss it and explore how we can potentially support and implement your idea. If you are a local business and want to be added to the monthly email that will include the upcoming month’s topic, please email GiveandGrowMountJoy@ gmail.com.”

The 33rd annual Putt for Education mini golf fundraiser will take place on Friday, Oct. 4, at the Village Greens, 1444 Village Road, Strasburg. Proceeds from the event will benefit Junior Achievement of South Central PA (JASCPA), which is gearing up for another year of educational programs it offers in schools across Lancaster County and the surrounding area.
Teams of four may sign up for one of three tee times, which will be 9:30 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. Twenty-four teams will begin golfing 24 holes at each tee time, and the team in each time slot with the best score will receive a trophy. Registration will include lunch and tickets for various prize drawings, which will feature gift baskets and items donated by local businesses and restaurants. Golfers may also participate in a contest to chip a ball into a hat to receive a prize. Different prizes will be offered during each time slot. Registration will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 27, while spaces are available. To register, visit www.jascpa .org/putt-for-education.
Putt for Education serves as JASCPA’s largest fundraiser of the year. The event not only helps the organization sustain the many programs it provides schools throughout the year, but it allows JASCPA to offer its programming at no cost to schools. Specific programs are offered at different grade levels, but
each activity falls under one of three educational pillars: financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. “Our main goal is to give students a taste of all the different things out there in the world,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “We want them to realize not every pathway you go down requires a four-year degree. There’s a lot of options available, and you can find a really exciting job.”
One of JASCPA’s many programs is Your Economic Success! (YES!), a half-day educational event. The next installment will take place at Centerville Middle School on Wednesday, Sept. 18. YES! is designed to familiarize seventhand eighth-graders with the financial decisions and career choices they will face as working adults, and it incorporates activities such as budget balancing, working as a team and building a resume. JASCPA will also host a STEM Summit at Hempfield High School on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and Thursday, Nov. 7.
REAL Life, a program JASCPA offers for
11th-graders, will be held at Penn Manor High School on Thursday, Oct. 24, and Friday, Oct. 25. The program entails a full school day of educational activities that will help prepare students for job interviews, managing finances and maintaining a personal brand on social media. REAL Life will also take place at Lampeter-Strasburg High School on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, and the school will host a STEM Summit for its freshmen on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025.
Every year, JASCPA serves more than 30,000 students in Lancaster County with its programs, which require more than 9,000 volunteers to operate. Volunteer opportunities in nearly every school district in the county are available online at www .jascpa.org.
“We want to make sure students are prepared to join the workforce and learn about the opportunities available right here in southcentral Pennsylvania,” Kierce said. “We’re so fortunate to partner with so many businesses and organizations that realize this is an investment in all our tomorrows.”

Prima Theatre, 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, will present a new production, “Golden Era,” on select dates from Friday, Sept. 20, to Sunday, Oct. 6. The original, experiential theatrical concert focuses on the Hollywood glamour of the 1920s to 1950s and has a club ambiance. Attendees may enjoy classic cocktails at Prima’s in-theater bar while listening to swing, jazz, big band, and crooner music, including the
sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Duke Ellington.
Performances are available in both evening and matinee slots, and more matinees are being offered this year than in previous seasons. Free parking is available.
Tickets may be purchased by visiting www .primatheatre.org or by calling the box office at 717-327-5124. Season subscriptions are also offered.
Other efforts include participating in the CROP Walk; supplying health, school and cleanup kits for Church World Service; and supporting programs including the Heifer Project and Blankets and Tools of Hope.
The church holds services on Sundays at 10 a.m.
Good invites everyone to come to the bazaar to pick up a bargain and enjoy time with neighbors. She noted that the event is important
to the church members, because it brings people into the church and it helps the church connect with the greater community.

The Elizabethtown Child Care Center (ECCC) recently passed its Department of Human Services (DHS) survey with no outstanding citations. DHS is an annual survey addressing state standards for child care providers.
In addition, ECCC holds a five-year accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC accreditation is a voluntary assessment that shows that a child care program has met specific standards for quality and education. The accreditation process evaluates 10 standards that contribute to quality care: relationships, teaching, assessment, health and safety, families, community relationships, leadership and management, curriculum, teachers and physical environment.
Accredited programs demonstrate that they
offer a safe and healthy environment for children, have qualified teachers and use excellent teaching materials. They also have a curriculum that is challenging and developmentally sound. ECCC has been NAEYC accredited for the past 35 years.
Finally, ECCC maintains a 4-star rating from Keystone STARS. Keystone STARS is Pennsylvania’s quality rating and improvement system (QRIS). A QRIS is a continuous quality improvement system to approach, assess, and communicate the level of quality in early and schoolage care and education programs.
Child care programs within Keystone STARS earn a STAR 1 to STAR 4 rating based on quality standards that measure staff education, classroom/ learning environment, and other criteria.
