igh school is hard enough without the added pressure of homelessness. Donegal School District is hoping to relieve some of that pressure by launching the Champions for Teens Program. The program will match each homeless student at Donegal High School with a “champion, or advocate in the community, who will help support the student in a variety of ways. “We have had a mentor program for years, but because homeless students are a particularly vulnerable population, we wanted something specifically for them, said Christina Helfrick, school social worker for secondary students. Helfrick will host a Zoom information session about the program on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 7:30 p.m. “The Zoom session will be an opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about the program, she said. “It’s not a commitment. It’s just to learn more and see if this is something they are interested in moving forward with. Helfrick hopes to launch the Champions for Teens Program in January. The program will include eight hours of training for advocates through a collaboration with various community partners. Lanc Co MyHome (Lancaster County Homeless Coalition) will offer a training about poverty. Lancaster General Health will provide training about trauma, and district representatives including Helfrick will train participants about special education and advocacy, as well as introduce advocates to the curriculum of the program. Helfrick said Champions for

To reserve a meal, veterans may call Joanne at The Gathering Place at 717-653-5911. Callers should provide their name, branch of service and phone number. Upon request, a second complimentary meal will also be provided for a veteran’s spouse or significant other. Christina Helfrick, social worker for secondary students in Donegal School District, is seeking Champions for Teens who will fill a role in the pyramid she created, representing support systems for at-risk homeless students. Teens came about after a needs assessment the district completed with Lanc Co MyHome. “One of the things that came out of that needs assessment is that students, especially those in high school, need extra support getting to adulthood, she explained. Currently, the district has about 20 homeless students, with seven at the high school, she said. In past years, homeless numbers districtwide have topped 100 students. Helfrick said she envisions the program starting out online, with advocates and students meeting once a week for nine weeks as they go through the curriculum. Then, it’s up to the pair to decide how to move forward from there. “They will start out with some goal-planning exercises, and, as the relationship develops, the advocate will help the student meet their goals, she explained. She said she hopes as pairs continue to work together, the advocate will be able to help the student con-
nect socially with the community at large. She encourages anyone with an interest in helping others to sign up for the Zoom info session. “The type of person who would be ideal for this is somebody who is persistent, empathetic, flexible, a good listener, conscientious and willing to bring along other support people alongside the youth as well, she said. Champions will help fill a need beyond school, Heflrick explained. “A student is more than just his academics, she said. “We can meet some of their needs as a district, but we know that our community is rich with empathy, and we want to tap into that. To learn more about the program or to register for the Zoom session, readers may email Helfrick at christina.helfrick@donegalsd.org.
The Rotary Club of Mount Joy will serve a free lunch to veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Inviting veterans to attend are Rotarians (from left) Randy Wolgemuth, Mark Rorabaugh, Denny Brandt, Leonard Nolt and Joanne Pinkerton.

faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

Pauline H. Engle Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve greatgrandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and dayto-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building
where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children,

The mission of AJ’s Surplus Grocery is to help community members stretch their dollars through surplus pricing and special deals. The store carries groceries, general merchandise, clothing, and anything else that can be found for a good price. After the store reached about eight months in business, store customers were surveyed to ascertain what they liked and what was missing. As a result, AJ’s now offers fresh meat and expanded produce and Goya offerings. “We created an essential list of items people need regardless of if they can be found in the surplus market,” Smiley remarked. On Sept. 25, AJ’s introduced “BinSanity,” in which bins of general merchandise are placed at the back of the store and feature decreasing prices. New items arrive on Fridays and have the highest price. By the following Thursday, the items are discounted to rock-bottom prices.

The ceremony will also remember local veterans who have served their country, as well as Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, in whose honor the Marietta Community House was formed.
Mid Penn Bank announced on Oct. 15 that it has contributed $75,000 to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC). PBCC is a statewide nonprofit organization designed to extend public awareness of breast cancer and to encourage increased public and private funding for research, legislative advocacy, and high-quality screening, diagnosis and treatment. In previous years, Mid Penn Bank has held its Celebrity Golf Tournament for Charity as the means for raising funds to support breast cancer
research and patient support. This year, the event did not take place in its normal form, due to guidelines and recommendations for social gatherings in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the money was raised through celebrity friends and sponsors. Since 2016, Mid Penn Bank has raised a total of $450,000 for breast cancer, contributing to PBCC, the American Cancer Society and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Mid Penn Bank is

“It’s our 35th year. It’s a big year for us,” Eileen Shipe commented, noting that for 34 years, Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, has hosted a holiday bazaar on the first Saturday of November. The inventory for the inaugural event and those that followed were handcrafted by church members, who made ornaments, home décor, and more. Eventually, the bazaar began to include outside vendors, with Shipe coordinating their participation. Church members still contributed items that were featured in a type of silent auction. In June, while the church building was in its fourth month of closure to all activities, Shipe and her committee realized they needed a different plan for the bazaar. Rather than hold the bazaar in person, they thought to host it online. When it was not feasible for vendors to participate, the bazaar came full circle, with church members once again providing the entire inventory for what has been
dubbed the Bizarre Bazaar. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Salem members have donated about 45 themed baskets for the bazaar. “They’re unbelievable,” Shipe said. “Most of the baskets are worth close to $100. They have everything under the sun: for kids, for adults, wine, Mickey Mouse, (and) Hershey Spa with a $100 gift certificate.” “I was really impressed,” added church council member and webmaster Alex DiMarzio. “They really turned out.” DiMarzio has cataloged the baskets and their contents at https://salem-uccroh.square.site. Individuals may visit the website until Friday, Nov. 6, to view the baskets, buy tickets to enter to win the lots of their choosing, and order food prepared by the Salem Servers. Tickets may also be purchased in person on Sundays before and after the 10 a.m. services, which are held in the church fellowship hall. DiMarzio will be at Salem from 9 to 11:30 a.m. those days. Additionally, tickets will be available at

Guarding the goal for Donegal, Amber James gathered six saves. “The execution has always been there,” emphasized head coach Ben Sarro. “Right now, the main difference has been taking on a playoff type mentality.” On Monday, the team topped Lancaster Mennonite, 3-1, and once again Donegal’s attack came from all angles. This time Bauer, Dunn, and Mia Steffy each netted a goal with assists supplied by Bauer and Merchant. Rena Rankin scooped up seven saves as keeper. “Our stats are diversified which is great to see,” noted Sarro. “The players we expect to step up have done that.” Sarro went on to describe his players’ willingness to play where needed, including Steffy who had been transiPhoto by Cheri Sine tioned to a new position where her Sophia Floyd wins a head ball for the Indians during their 3-1, Section continued efforts earned a goal one day earlier, and as the secondranked AA team, they earned themselves a spot to run at districts on October 31st. “You could tell they were racing focused on passing runners and not settling in,” praised Koser. Logan Fry claimed 27th (17:56), Brock Overlander 29th (17:57), and Sam Rothstein 35th (18:09). John Spackman and Noah Hinkle crossed back-to-back at 57th and 58th respectively. “Our rookies, John and Noah, responded really well in their first big meet and keep our top six runners in a tight pack,” commented Koser.

against LMH, defensive efforts from sophomore Holly Herbert, and Kyla Collin’s work in the midfield. “Holly’s been playing solid wherever she’s been,” described Sarro. “Also, Kyla has been a great spark for us-she does a lot of little things that end up getting us goals.” FIELD HOCKEY With only one contest last week, field hockey honed their skills in a 5-0 triumph over non-league opponent, Octorara. All three Donegal seniors, Maddy Leety (two goals), Julianne Wheeler, and Madison Kaley, got in on the scoring action, with the fifth goal coming from Paige Miller. “So happy to see our three seniors playing strong at the end of the season,” noted head coach Amanda Misselhorn. “What a great memory for them to all score during our last night home game.” Emma Miller, whose season accolades include eight goals and five assists, played a massive role in setting the stage for success, racking up four assists in the win over Octorara. Freshman Maria Gehman supplied the fifth assist. “Emma unselfishly set up the first four goals with her smart and accurate passing and creative attack,” Misselhorn credited the junior midfielder. It was a quiet night on the defensive end of the field, but the Braves did fire one shot on goal which Indians keeper CC Emswiler easily managed. “The team is improving and playing better each game,” praised Misselhorn. This week the team has one last regular season opportunity to improve their 6-4 record, hosting Ephrata on Tuesday. FOOTBALL Saturday afternoon in Lebanon, the Indians pulled off a come-frombehind, 21-15 win over the Cedars after trailing 13-0 in the first quarter. The Indians didn’t get on the scoreboard till the second when Garrett Blake (119 rushing yards) ran in his first of two touchdowns. Blake’s second came in the third
quarter complemented by another from Mason Ober less than a minute later. At defensive back, Trent Weaver’s interception set the stage for Ober’s trip to the end zone. Noah Rohrer put the finishing touch on each conversion going three-forthree in PATs, and a pair of sacks from Rohrer and Owen Champ thwarted Lebanon’s late game chances at a comeback. BOYS’ SOCCER Boys’ soccer wrapped up their three-game week on a high note, registering wins over Northern Lebanon and Octorara after slipping to Lancaster Mennonite. Friday night the squad hosted Northern Lebanon and found themselves trailing 1-0 at the half before flipping the switch on the Vikings and surging ahead to a 5-1 triumph. Brody Bonham scored his first of two goals, three minutes into the
second half and repeated his success just seven minutes later. Sparked by the turn in momentum, Indians striker Levi Sites (1a) netted two goals, and Joseph Turbedsky supplied the fifth, all within five minutes. Andrew Myers and Joshua Leidich supplied two assists apiece. On Wednesday, the Indians shut out Octorara 3-0 with Turbedsky opening scoring 54 minutes into the contest. Silas Mumper put in another just minutes later, and the third Indian tally was an own goal off an Octorara athlete just two minutes before time expired. The Braves managed to push down the field for two scoring opportunities but Donegal keeper Nevy Ncube preserved the shutout with two saves. In Monday’s 3-1 loss at Lancaster Mennonite, Turbedsky notched the lone goal for the Tribe.

Families may also want to “visit” friends in costume via Zoom or other online video platforms.
