Eagle Scout is helping to preserve the past

Tristan Bair may only be a high school senior, but he’s thinking about people and places much, much older than he is. Tristan, a member of the Donegal High School Class of 2025, recently completed his Eagle Scout project for the Mount Joy Area Historical Society.

“I chose 10 historic locations within Mount Joy to create outdoor signs that have a brief description of what the building was back in the day along with

“I wanted to do something that would last for many years and mean something to the town I grew up in.”

a QR code that can be scanned,” Tristan shared. “The QR code will take you to the historical society’s web page and give further information about the location as well as some pictures of what the building used to look like.”

Locations featured in Tristan’s project include Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., now used by the Mount Joy Area Historical Society; Central Hotel and Bube’s Brewery, 102 N. Market St.; and the Gerberich-Payne Shoe Company, 240 W. Main St., now home to a senior citizen housing complex.

Tristan got the idea for his project after talking to his grandmother Kim Bair, who is active with the Mount Joy Area Historical Society. He has also been a

junior member of the society for the past few years.

“I wanted to do something that would last for many years and mean something to the town I grew up in,” he stated. “I know the historical society has been wanting to expand its connections beyond its physical location, so I thought I could help do that.”

A member of Troop 349 in Mountville, Tristan joined Cub Scouts when he was 6 years old.

He is currently a Life Scout and

earned his Eagle Rank on Nov. 4, the night before his 18th birthday. He is the son of Diane Bair and Justin Roberson of Mount Joy.

Tristan began working on his Eagle Scout project in May. He attended Mount Joy Borough meetings to get approvals, and he discussed his project with the historical society to approve the sites where he planned to install the signs.

Market St., Mount Joy, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10.

As Jim Johnson, founding artistic director of Susquehanna Stage, explained, the concert is a yearly collaboration between the theater and the church.

“St. Luke’s presents an annual concert of compassion, and this is our fourth gathering presenting Broadway music,” he said. “Vocalists from Susquehanna Stage will present solos, duets and group numbers from the American musical theater songbook.” Participants from

Heritage Craft Show

Unique, handcrafted items will be featured in a historic setting when the Winters Heritage House Museum hosts the 34th annual Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show. The show will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

Each room of the historic log homes and Victorian Coble House that make up the museum site will be filled with a wide variety of artisans and crafters. Items for sale will include jellies and jams, handmade soaps and candles, natural beauty care products, wood working, hand-forged iron, paper crafts, jewelry and hand-sewn items. Additionally, the Winters Heritage House Museum’s own quilt and craft groups will be selling hand-quilted and handcrafted items.

“The Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show has become a greatly anticipated community tradition,” said museum director Teresa St. Angelo. “The historic log cabins make a unique backdrop for people perusing the many talented vendors as they shop for that perfect gift. While we are a smaller event, the craft show committee carefully reviewed each vendor application to ensure a variety of quality items would be offered.”

In addition to the vendors, Winters Heritage House Museum will sell hot dogs plus pulled pork sandwiches and chicken rivel soup from Gene Wenger’s Meats and Fine Foods. A

Showtunes

Susquehanna Stage will include Johnson, Sharon Boyer, Michael Kohler, Tara Beitzel, Jon Knauss and Beth and Kent Gable.

Johnson noted that the concert came about as a collaborative effort of the performers. Many years ago, the theater presented “Broadway Goes to Church” at another church in Marietta.

Although showtunes and spirituality may seem like an unusual pairing, the music of Broadway works well in a church concert, Johnson said. Many songs from musicals have a spiritual nature and a connection to God,

he noted, including music from “Godspell” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” for example. The music will focus on songs of worship, praise, inspiration and reflection.

A freewill offering will be received at the door to benefit St. Luke’s outreach ministries for the Mount Joy Food Bank. Cookies and beverages will be served following the concert.

silent basket auction will also be available through 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

“Thanks to the generous donations of area businesses and organizations, we have some great items to bid on, including a NAPA car care bucket, Lancaster Stormers tickets, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre (tickets) and admission to several area museums,” St. Angelo added.

Winters Heritage House Museum is located a halfblock from the town square in Elizabethtown. Two of the buildings included in the museum property date to the founding of the town. The museum is a community project run mostly by volunteers and provides Elizabethtown with educational programs, the preservation of local history and a genealogy research library.

There is a small admission charge for the craft show, or people may bring a nonperishable food item or a personal care item to donate to the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. Parking for the craft show will be available on the street as well as in a free lot behind 33 E. doing the actual installation part,” he commented.

“The most challenging part of this project was definitely the steps it took to prepare and amount of time each of the individual steps along the way took.”

The best part of his project, he said, was installation day, when friends helped him put up the signs. He also credits several people with helping him with the project, including his grandmother Kim; Carper Signs, which agreed to make the signs for him; and Linda Eberly of Eberly Designs.

Now that his project is complete, Tristan is looking forward to hearing feedback from the community, and he hopes his efforts will boost interest in local history.

“A project like this is important to me because I think it could potentially open a gateway for people to connect more within the community,” he said.

“I am hoping that this will bring more interest from the community to learn more about Mount Joy’s history. I am hoping it is a way to have others become

more involved with our historical society. I feel like not a lot of people are aware of the really cool things that they do for our town.”

Volunteer readers sought for Ag Literacy Week

The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is seeking volunteer readers for its ninth annual Ag Literacy Week, which is set to occur from Monday to Friday, March 17 to 21. Volunteers from communities across the state will visit classrooms and other student groups to read the book “The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” and talk about local farming.

Ag Literacy Week connects volunteers from the agricultural community to local classrooms to share the story of agriculture. Readers have the opportunity to talk about farming and agriculture through the book they read as well as sharing their own story about farming, agriculture

programs they are involved with, or their connections to agriculture. After each reading event, volunteers donate a copy of the book and educational activities to the classroom to be used throughout the year and with future classes. More than 2,000 copies of the book will be presented in classrooms in Pennsylvania this year.

“The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” explores the joys of planting a garden, nurturing and harvesting food, and recycling scraps to compost, ensuring that the cycle of growth and sustainability continues. Scientific facts about soil, plants, pollinators, decomposers, and more are included on every spread. The book

encourages young readers to become environmental stewards, learn how to care for a garden, understand a plant life cycle, and discover the power of pollinators and the importance of composting.

To register as a volunteer reader by Friday, Dec. 13, or to learn more, visit www.pfbfriends.com/ ag-literacy-week/.

The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is a charitable organization supported by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. The foundation has been educating the public and promoting agriculture since its inception in 1986. To learn more about foundation programs, go to www.pfbfriends.com.

In addition to the resources available to the Lancaster County Garden Club’s members and visitors from the community, the organization’s monthly meetings and special events provide a space for participants to learn from other gardeners and exchange techniques and tips. Manor Township resident Ruth Davis, who joined the club 25 years ago and currently serves as its president, said that the comradery between members is her favorite aspect of the Lancaster County Garden Club. “We share a wealth of knowledge, but I enjoy making friends, talking and visiting their gardens,” Ruth added.

Ruth’s husband, Bob Davis, coordinates the Lancaster County Garden Club’s programs and annual events, including an annual banquet and a corn roast every August. Ruth and Bob share a love of conifers and trees, and they tend to 16 acres of land near Millersville. “We have a bit of an arboretum,” Bob said.

The Lancaster County Garden Club was started by a group of businessmen who enjoyed growing roses, and it was known as the Men’s Garden Club until 2009.

Since 1951, the club’s members have tended the rose garden in Buchanan Park - a scenic location that former mayor Rick Gray referred to as the most beautiful place in Lancaster city.

For more information about the club and its events, visit https:// lancastergardenclub.org.

Horst will acknowledge that while people trust God and know He loves them, there are moments when life is hard and people doubt His care. Horst will speak about how to trust God even in difficult moments.

Horst and her husband, Tim, have been married for more than 40 years. They have two sons and two daughters-in-law and recently welcomed a granddaughter. Horst’s books have been published in multiple languages, and she has shared God’s Word

around the world.

During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

Herb Guild to meet

The Conestoga Herb Guild will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville. The program will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.

Herb Guild members

Susan Smith and Barb Dagen will lead a “Making an Herbal Advent Wreath” program during which attendees will make an Advent table centerpiece. Guild members will contribute dried or fresh herbs. They should bring enough to share and bring scissors or garden clippers to cut herbs to size. The Herb Guild will supply the platter,

oasis, and florist tape. Smith is a longtime member of the guild and a Master Gardener emeritus. Growing herbs has been an important part of her gardening experience. Dagen was a longtime member of the Herb Guild before taking a two-year break. She rejoined this year. There is a materials fee. Guests are welcome with advance reservations and a fee, and they may stay for refreshments following a brief business meeting. To register, contact Susan Atkins at 717-725-7451 or atkinsateb@aol.com.
