recognized leader in historic preservation and economic development will be highlighted,” Schubert noted, adding that the presentation is also meant to bring attention to Marietta’s Heritage Plan, which was created by the borough to focus on the town’s history. “(We hope) to inspire residents of Marietta to work together to identify, conserve and preserve Marietta’s heritage resources as a basis for retaining and enhancing strong community character and a sense of place.”Schubert said the talk will highlight Marietta in the context of Hurricane Agnes and its aftermath. “The audience will be invited to share their memories of Hurricane Agnes,” he explained. “We’re looking particularly for stories illustrating the local community’s commitment to historic preservation and economic development.” He noted that the presentation and discussion will be recorded and broadcast simultaneously for remote viewers and also as a way to preserve audience comments for future use. “We are planning on hosting future events where people will be filmed telling their stories as part of a larger oral history project,” he remarked. The 50th anniversary of the hurricane marked a good focal point for Marietta’s This Place Matters campaign, Schubert said, and he encourages people to come to the presentation to discover more about Marietta’s heritage and share their own recollections. “Come and learn about why this place matters, why Marietta is important, how Marietta continues to lead in the areas of historic preservation and economic development,” he stated. “Come share your stories about why this place matters.” For more information on the Town Talk, visit communityhouse.org.https://marietta

Juggling, humor and faith will come together on stage when Glossbrenner United Methodist Church (UMC) holds its Rally Day featuring Chris Ivey. The event will be held at the church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy, on Sunday, Sept. 18, beginning at 9:30 a.m. As Jessica Rockey, children and youth director of Glossbrenner explained, Rally Day is held not only to promote the church and its activities, but to welcome people from the community. “We wanted to do something fresh and new for Rally Day this year,” she stated. “We wanted to do something for all ages to enjoy.” Rockey had seen Ivey perform in the past, and when she learned he does a freewilloffering-only performance for churches, she was sold. His church performances feature a message of “Will you rust or will you trust?” she noted, adding, “We knew there wasn’t a more timely message for our church and community.”Rockeyremarked that audiences can expect to be amazed by Ivey’s skills as a juggler and enjoy his humorous and engaging stage presence. “I think it is awesome to have someone like Chris Ivey during our regular worship service time to remind people that God uses all different types of people with different talents to bring His message of good news to the world,” she commented. “And yes, you can give the Gospel message while juggling flames and swords.” In addition to connecting with the community, Rally Day is an opportunity for Glossbrenner UMC to underscore the importance of young people at the church, Rockey said. “Glossbrenner Rally Day is a time to celebrate the children of our church,” she noted. “After all, children just aren’t the future of our church but of our world, and if we don’t do things to get the children excited about church and for them to know they are very important to Jesus, we realize we have a bleak future as a world and church withoutThethem.”Rally Day event will be followed by a free spaghetti luncheon in the church’s fellowship hall, and Rockey hopes members of the community will attend the event along with members of the church. “You never had to step foot in Glossbrenner - or a church for that matter - to know you are welcome to this event,” she said. “We hope people can come enjoy a time of community fellowship and know they have a church family here at Glossbrenner. They are welcome to come back anytime.” Rockey requested that people preregister for the spaghetti dinner no later than Thursday, Sept. 15. To sign up, call or text her at 717-517-4967.

There’s a lot of history woven throughout Maytown, and some of that past will be on display beginning this month at the Maytown Historical Society museum. “Gebhart Coverlets and Antique Textiles” will open on Saturday, Sept. 10, and will run from 1 to 4 p.m. on the first Saturdays and Sundays of the month through Sunday, Dec. 4. The display will feature eight coverlets, or bedspreads, made in the mid-1800s at the John Reuben Gebhart weaving factory, which once stood on North Queen Street in Maytown, opposite St. John’s Lutheran Church. Additionally, two quilts are highlighted, one pieced and one appliqued, along with table runners woven by Henry and Anna Haines of Maytown. “We have some candlewick pillowcases, which are very pretty, and there’s an interesting story that goes along with them,” stated historical society member Deb Gepfer, who explained that candlewicking is a method of embroidery. A small tabletop loom is on display as well as a crib-size coverlet that was created as a fundraiser for the museum. The textiles were originally on display at this year’s Mayfest, an annual festival that was held on May 7, but the rainy weather that day cut down on the crowds that might have enjoyed them, Gepfer noted. “We wanted to give people another chance to see them,” she said of the display, which took about a month to set up. “These pieces vary in color and configuration, and some of them are very fancy.” Historical society member Bob Lescallette completed extensive research of the Gebharts, and his findings accompany the textile displays. While most of the pieces are displayed behind glass for protection, one more modern creation can be found out on a table for visitors to touch, Gepfer noted. She encourages anyone with an interest in needlework or history to check out the display. “It’s very cool to see something made in that time period and see the beauty of it - the details and how it’s lasted all these years,” she said. The exhibit will mark the first time the museum has opened since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Along with the textile display, the museum features a wide variety of items of local interest, said Linda Good, a member of the historical society. “There’s a full-size canoe, bows and arrows and a grandfather clock,” she said. “Everything was made or constructed in Maytown.” As the museum gears up for another season, the Maytown Historical Society is also beginning its programming and will host a presentation by Peggy Hicks Shafer on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the East Donegal Township Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. Shafer, who grew up in Maytown, will talk about what it was like to live in the town 80 years ago. The program will begin at 6 p.m. and will be followed by refreshments and a time for questions. A short business meeting will conclude the presentation and will offer a preview of upcoming Maytown Historical Society events, including a breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 8; Halloween events later in October; and a Christmas gala in December. People are also invited to join the Maytown Historical Society, which meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month at the East Donegal Township Building. For more information, call the museum at 717-426-1526 and leave a message. loom on of one of Gepfer with some of the coverlets Sept. 27, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, 70 S. All classes will meet on Tuesdays, Sept. 27 to Oct. 18, at the tennis courts at Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. “This is our club’s biggest car show of the year,” said Lancaster County Corvette Club member Mary Anne Lewandowski, describing the American Legends People’s Choice Fun Show. The show, presented by the club and Whitmoyer Auto Group, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Registration will be open from 9 to 11 a.m., and the show will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with awards presented at approximately 3 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. The car show is open to any General Motors (GM) vehicle as well as any GM-powered vehicle. Those could include cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, hot rods, antiques, classic cars and more, said Scott Lewandowski, who is co-chairing the event with Mary Anne, his wife. In addition to vehicles, the show will feature tickets for giveaway baskets, a silent auction and a cash prize drawing. A food truck and an ice cream truck will be on-site as well, and a DJ will provide music. Proceeds from the car show will benefit Clare House of Lancaster. The organization provides transitional housing to mothers and children facing homelessness.ScottandMary Anne, who describe themselves as “car nuts,” own several cars. College sweethearts, they bonded over Scott’s 1968 Camaro, and for their 25th wedding anniversary, they special-ordered a Camaro and drove it across Route 66. They noted that there’s something special about Corvette culture. “A Corvette is just the cream of American-built vehicles,” Scott said. “When you drive or ride in one, it’s a different experience than any other car. When you pass another Corvette driver on the road, you wave to each other.”

Scott and Mary Anne emphasized that the American Legends car show is a fun day for everyone - participants and spectators alike. “It’s not a judged show,” Mary Anne said. “The awards are people’s choice, so every person who enters a car gets to vote.” She added that many of the car owners bring lawn chairs and sit by their cars. “People love to talk about their cars, and they encourage people to ask questions,” she stated. Last year’s show drew about 140 cars, more than 100 of which were Corvettes. Some vehicles dated back to the 1940s. “We really embrace those,” Scott said. “We love it when people say, ‘Oh, my dad had a car like this.’ Or they say, ‘I had a Corvette, but I sold it when I had kids.’ We love to hear peopleScottreminisce.”andMary Anne noted that the car show wouldn’t be possible without the support of the 100-plus-member Lancaster County Corvette Club. “We are so grateful for our club members who volunteer to help with this event,” Mary Anne said. “We couldn’t do it withoutPreregistrationthem.” for the car show is available for a discount before Saturday, Sept. 17. Dayof-show registration is also available. The first 200 registered people will receive a goodie bag and a T-shirt.
