Things To Hold On To hen Garden Spot High School (GSHS), 669 E. Main St., New Holland, graduates 240 members of the Class of 2022 on Wednesday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium, two students will have prepared speeches to present to their classmates, their families, and the members of the faculty. The two seniors were chosen from about seven students who auditioned in front of the entire faculty. Jewel Boninu, daughter of Jennifer and Steve Boninu of Narvon, titled her speech “The B l e s s i n g o f C h a n g e .” “ I h a v e struggled with adapting to change my whole life,” confessed Boninu. “So my speech is about how (change) is necessary and how we can’t really grow without it.” She added that in her speech she says that comfort can often be found in the small things that stay the same when big things are changing.

“Garden Spot provided me with the foundation I needed for success in the future.” Amanda Wolfe is the daughter of Brenda Wolfe of Narvon. Wolfe titled her speech “A Thanks for Now and Always.” “I really wanted to address those who have helped me and my peers,” she explained. “I thank the parents, the teachers, the faculty, and especially friends, and I speak to how we as a community got through high school and COVID-19 (restrictions) together.” Wolfe noted that her speech pays special attention to

the bonds students have with the community. “Now we are on different paths in life, but we still have each other,” she said. “I (offer) a few words of encouragement, (pointing out that) as we leave on our separate paths, we know we have that comfort in each other still.” Wolfe will leave the area to attend West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va., in the fall. She plans to major in forensic examination with hopes of working in law enforcement. She said that her time at GSHS fulfilled several needs. “It provided me with a new family,” she said, adding that she attended multiple schools before settling at GSHS. “Garden Spot provided me with the foundation I needed for success in the future,” Wolfe stated. Members of the Garden Spot High School Class of 2022 Jewel Boninu (left) and Amanda Wolfe were chosen to speak at commencement.

GSFR Car Cruise Planned BY ANN MEAD ASH

In 2021, the annual Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) car cruise lined up cars along Main Street, along with filling the parking lot of the GSFR station at 339 E. Main St., New Holland. According to organizer Ray Harnish, about 100 vintage and modern vehicles, including motorcycles, took part in the event, which was dampened by the threat of rain. See GSFR pg 2

Lighthouse Vocational Services participants display a quilt and sewing machine that will be auctioned off at the organization’s upcoming fundraiser.

Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) participants are so busy working in small groups in the community that the organization is short on vehicles to transport them to job sites. For that reason, during the organization’s 29th annual auction on Saturday, June 11, the auctioneer will pause to fundraise specifically for the purchase of cars. “It’s a dire need for us,” said Katie Martin, LVS event coordinator. All the excitement, fun, and food will be back when this year’s auction kicks off on Friday, June 10, at 4 p.m. with pulled pork sandwich See LVS pg 4

A candy drop from an ultralight plane will be held at 8 a.m. Items that will be auctioned on the morning of June 11include flowers and other plants, power tools, and indoor furniture. At noon, LVS participants will give a presentation. “We will take a few minutes for them to thank the crowd, and one participant may say a few words,” said Brian French, director of programs for LVS. Following the presentation, specialty items will be sold. At 12:30 p.m., approximately eight to 10 quilts and quilt tops ranging in size from wall hangings to full-size quilts will be sold. At 1 p.m., sheds and outdoor furniture will go across the block. Martin reported that up to three sheds and seven or eight pieces of outdoor furniture have been secured. Organizers are hoping to raise $145,000 at the event, which will help offset the costs for individuals who take part in the LVS program under private pay arrangements, as well as offsetting general program costs. Currently, LVS serves nearly 190 participants. The mission of LVS is to provide vocational services for individuals with developmental disabilities and to offer opportunities for personal growth. Classes will include one for cars, trucks and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old, but are interesting and are potential future classics. Another is for vehicles that have been judged by the Antique Automobile Club of America and have scored first place in the Juniors or Seniors category. Additionally, the fire company staff will determine the winner of the Weaverland

Valley Best of Show award. The winner will receive a prize package and trophy, and his or her vehicle will be featured on next year’s dash plaque. On-site vehicle registration will take place from 8 to 11:30 a.m. The first 100 registered show vehicles will receive a dash plaque. Each attendee will receive one ballot for voting. Voting will end at 2 p.m., with winners announced at approximately 2:30 p.m. The winning vehicles will be paraded to the stage area to receive their prizes. Breakfast and lunch will be available at the kitchen in the large pavilion from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will also include door prizes and craft and flea market items available for purchase. The park has a playground area. Admission is free for spectators. For more information, call 717-445-4581. A discount is available to anyone who registers in advance. Additionally, craft or flea market vendors may call the aforementioned number for information on registering for 10-by-20-foot spaces.

Experience IU13 water, and cupcakes for families while supplies last,” said Guthrie, who noted that school resource officers will hand out icy pops, and that food trucks will be located in the courtyard. Organizers have also prepared a special page that highlights milestones of IU13 history at www.iu13.org/history. “IUs were founded in 1965,” said Guthrie. “The IUs opened their offices in 1971.” Guthrie emphasized that members of the public are welcome at the free event. “The idea is to celebrate (and) learn about the work we do,” she said, noting that she hopes attendees will leave with “an understanding of the breadth of IU13.” “There are so many amazing things happening that people don’t (know about),” she said. Readers who would like to attend are asked to register so that organizers can plan to have enough food and door prizes. To register, please email communications@iu13.org. “People know (the IU13) from the lens of special education classrooms, and that is the foundation of who we are, but we have a 50-year history of doing really good work,” said Shannan Guthrie, program director with the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13). “ We take that dedication to other areas.” Among those areas are helping teachers with curriculum development and school districts to maximize funding. A sampling of the IU13’s activities will be highlighted during the group’s 50th anniversary celebration on Thursday, June 9, at the Lancaster offices, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 4 to 7 p.m. Organizers will have a plethora of activities ready for attendees to enjoy. Among those will be the Star Lab, a portable planetarium that can hold up to 20 people, which will be set up in the IU’s large conference room. A demonstration of Brailing

services will give attendees an idea of the number of books and flyers the IU transfers into Braille format each year. “ We will showcase our Refugee Center and our cultural navigator services,” said Guthrie, who explained that cultural navigators help families to meet with other families and navigate the system to find babysitters, shelter, education, and health care services. A demonstration of orientation and mobility services will be held, and STEM activities will show how lessons can be adapted for all levels of learning. “It will be in an expo style with examples (of what the IU13 does) all over the place,” said Guthrie, who added that Lisa Sanchez, a representative of Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, will talk about summer camps. Other stops on the visit might include learning about organ tissue donation or meeting Luca, a facility dog that that travels to classrooms within the IU. “We will have free hot dogs,

Garden Spot (13-4) was coming off an impressive victory in the quarterfinals where they topped fifth-seeded York Catholic at New Holland on Saturday afternoon, May 21. It was impressive not so much in the sense of dominance, but rather how nicely the Spartans held on for victories in the first two sets of this 3-0 victory. The Spartans won each of the first two sets by the score of 26-24 before finishing off the Fighting Irish 25-16. Contributing to the plethora of points was Laukhuff with 20 kills. Laukhuff, who also came away with six digs, was helped by Tyler Martin’s 29 assists. Martin also posted two blocks as did Sadowski and Jethro Martin. Wehn tied Laukhuff for the leading total of digs - six each. See Sports pg 9
