Carl Edwards, director of development and operations with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, is clear about the mission behind the organization’s annual coat giveaway. “(We’re meeting) that physical need … providing something tangible for kids that may not have (outerwear) as it starts to get cold here,” said Edwards. “This is why we do what we do.”
According to Corrine Horning, community events and outreach manager, at the 2023 giveaway more than 400 coats were handed out, and this year, she would like to have more than 500 to give away. The success of the annual project is dependent on area residents who donate coats and help distribute them.
Volunteers are needed to help at the giveaway on Monday, Oct. 14, at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. This year’s giveaway, which will be held from
9 a.m. to 6 p.m., will serve infants through seniors in high school within the ELANCO School District whose families participate in free and reducedcost lunch programs. Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, will be required.
Donations of new and gently used coats, hats, scarves, and gloves are needed for this year’s giveaway. Toiletries will also be collected at CrossNet’s offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, through Friday, Oct. 4.
Donors who bring a brand-new coat to contribute to the drive will be entered to win a $50 gift card. The gift card drawing will be held following the end of the drive. For those who prefer internet shopping, an Amazon wish list, which can be accessed through www.elancocross.org, has been set up. Individuals and groups are encouraged to organize coat drives, and financial donations are also welcome.
Leftover coats and other winter clothing will be disbursed as
specific needs come up in the district.
Donated coats should be designed to keep children warm in weather that is 40 degrees or below. As in the past, there is a special need for items for older teens in neutral colors. Edwards pointed out that older students also appreciate hooded
sweatshirts. Toiletries that CrossNet especially needs for the giveaway include toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, and body wash, which are gathered into goodie bags to be handed out.
A snack, including a hot dog, will be available for attendees at the giveaway.
Edwards and Horning both noted that events such as the coat giveaway have been growing, stating that more than 700 backpacks were distributed during the back-to-school giveaway on Aug. 13.

“Change is good sometimes,” said Kevin Nofziger, stewardship director with Fairmount, referring to the change in the menu for Fairmount’s 35th annual auction and barbecue. Traditionally - going back to the first event - chicken barbecue meals have been featured, but this year pork barbecue meals and sandwiches will be sold alongside a variety of other tasty favorites.

John R. Haughery, assistant professor, Automation & Electronic Technologies with Millersville University (MU), remembers when he was a high school student and wanted to learn more about manufacturing and automation.
“There’s a law that you can’t go into a manufacturing environment unless you’re 18 and over,” said Haughery, explaining the Robotic WorX Program to a group of high school students from
around the county. “I did not get this opportunity in high school.”
The Robotic WorX Program gives high school students the opportunity Haughery did not have by offering a chance to work in the automation lab at MU. “While still in high school, (students) can experience automation for manufacturing in a safe environment,” Haughery explained.
The Robotic WorX Program was developed by Haughery and John Bridgen, director of customer

“We really want to focus on fellowship this year. We have 12 or 13 speakers, but a lot of our programs will be digging deeper into the community and getting to know each other better,” said Madison Petersheim, a member of the planning team for Neighbors, a Christian women’s fellowship group that meets at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown.
Petersheim, who is on the planning team along with Rachel Mast and Rebecca Beam, announced that the club will meet at the church every Tuesday from Sept. 10 through May 13, 2025, with the exception of Dec. 24 and Jan. 31, after meeting every other week last year. The meeting time has also been changed to a later time of 9:30 to 11 a.m. to accommodate women who drop off their children at school.
For the opening meeting, which will mark the group’s 38th year, a welcome back brunch will be featured. “We will get together and eat and catch up on our summers. We will have a fun activity planned and get to know anyone that is new,” said Petersheim.
Each Neighbors meeting includes refreshments, prayer time and a program; child care is provided. “Every meeting will start with coffee and prayer, and this year we will have speakers, activities and other things planned,” Petersheim said. “All child care is free. We have paid child care workers that come in every week.”
When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required, and a nominal fee is charged to
cover the cost of supplies.
New activities this year will be a Game Morning on Nov. 26 when attendees will be invited to bring a card or board game. There will also be new speakers, including Conestoga Mennonite Church pastor Jeremiah Martin. “On Sept. 17, we are having the pastor of the church come in. He is new to the group,” noted Petersheim. “Bob and Cindy Petersheim will do a Q and A on marriage on Feb. 4, 2025. Everyone knows them, but they have never come in before.”
The group also takes part in community service projects. On Jan 21, 2025, the ladies will knot comforters for the Mennonite Central Committee. The blankets will be distributed worldwide to people in need. On March 25, 2025, members will take part in a service

satisfaction and co-worker advancement with Precision Cobotics in Lititz. The partnership between the two companies and a grant from Lancaster STEM Alliance is making it possible for students in participating school districts, such as Pequea Valley, to engage in hands-on experience working with MU students and faculty and Precision Cobotics staff members.
The program offers three levels of opportunity, including 30- to 90-minute tours of the MU automation lab; mini job shadow experiences, which run two to three hours; and internships, which immerse students in an automation project for six hours a week. Students must be at least age 16 to take part in an internship.
Jill Hackman, Career Pathways coordinator with Garden Spot High School, said, “The Robotic WorX Program provides students with a comprehensive and authentic learning experience in automation, robotics, and engineering careers.”
She lauded the first-hand experience the program offers, saying, “Students engage in real-world projects from both small and large
businesses, gaining hands-on experience that encompasses the entire process, from identifying client needs and conducting research to trial and error and final implementation.” Hackman likes the opportunity the program gives to interested students. “This program offers students a valuable glimpse into career paths within the industry, helping them refine their career goals and post secondary education plans,” she said.
High school students who take part in the program will be introduced to the development of automation for

certain tasks based on requests from manufacturers. To complete a project, a proof of concept must be created and pitched to the company looking to automate the process. The team working in the lab at MU develops the proof of concept giving high school students real-world experience in automation robotics.
Precision Cobotics exists alongside Precision Form Manufacturing, a business producing highly engineered parts for the automotive and aerospace industries. Bridgen noted that the automation processes used at Precision Form are helping to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. by automating repetitive processes. Bridgen added that parts are not only created but also inspected by automated machines using artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is also used in automated bin picking machines, and the company is working to automate palletizing, which involves the movement of 50-pound boxes of product to pallets for shipping.
On July 25, about 30 students from around the county visited Precision Cobotics as part of Momentum Coding Academy, a six-week Elizabethtown College summer program made possible by Lancaster STEM Alliance and hosted by Cargas. The students spent nearly three hours trying their hands at robotics, learning about artificial intelligence visioning, touring Precision Form Manufacturing, and having the opportunity to question professionals in the world of automation. A presentation on the Robotic WorX Program was part of the activities.

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, invites students ages 14 to 18 to join the site’s Student Historian program, an after-school experience that delves into 18th-century history, trades, and crafts.
For more than 60 years, the Historic Ephrata Cloister has offered local students the opportunity to explore their community’s heritage while developing public speaking and critical thinking skills. The Student Historian program provides an opportunity to learn the art of interpretation in an immersive, hands-on environment.
The program will take place from mid-September to mid-May, with weekly sessions on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. From January onward, meetings will shift to every other Thursday, offering flexibility for students’ busy schedules.
The Student Historian program includes the opportunity to be a part of the Cloister’s Lantern Tours, a signature theatrical event held during the holiday season - from Friday to Monday, Dec. 27 to 30, this year. Student Historians will also have the opportunity to assist with special events and programs throughout the year.
To kick off the 2024-25 program, an informational session will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ephrata Cloister Visitor Center. The session is open to new and prospective participants, as well as their parents. Registration is requested by contacting Dan Roe, museum educator II, at daroe@ pa.gov or 717-733-6600.
