On Sept. 6, EJ Rittersbach, a team member with the Share & Care Shop at Garden Spot Village (GSV), was arranging for final touches on the thrift boutique before its soft opening at 10 a.m. that day. The shop underwent renovations during the summer, and the remodeled store, complete with fall decorations, was almost ready to greet customers once again.

We do everything we can to help them through thatAsprocess.”partofthat process, the team accepts items to resell, with 100% of the profits going to benefit the Benevolent Fund, which aids residents who have exhausted their finances. In June, members of the store’s team presented a check for more than $94,000 to the fund. Because space in the shop, originally a large maintenance closet, is limited, clothing is not accepted. Items that can be found include small appliances, housewares, furniture, lamps, and limited antiques. Accessories, such as jewelry, glassware, dishes, frames, decorative items like artificial floral arrangements and wreaths, and knickknacks line the shelves, along with cards and gift bags. Puzzles, games, and stuffed animals are also sold.

It was nearly 90 degrees in Ephrata on Aug. 20, but at least 100 Fairmount residents and dozens of members of the surrounding community waited patiently for a number of fire trucks and rescue vehicles to arrive and hold a parade around the campus at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata.

According to Troupe, the club has its origins in the competition held as part of the New Holland Farm Show in October of 1985. “The first meeting was in February of 1985,” said Troupe. That meeting included Paul Caudill Sr., Ver non Shenk, See NHAHS pg 4

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

New cars have been costly for quite some time, but those costs have spiked considerably since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. That unprecedented rise may lead many motorists to wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. According to data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive, the average cost of a new car in September 2021 was just over $45,000. That marked a $3,000 increase from June 2021 and a $5,000 increase from the end of 2020.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

given every year from 1985 to 1989,” said Troupe. “Everyone who threw in the league every year got one of these plaques with your name and your average and the year.”

When it became apparent that more courts were needed to accommodate pitchers, club members approached Jay Weber, then president of the New Holland Planing Mill (now New Holland Church Furniture), for assistance because many planing mill employees pitched during lunch. Construction began in December of 1988, and the four courts were completed in May of 1989, for a total of nine. “When it was all said and done, (Weber) was contacted to find out how he wanted us to pay it off, and he said, ‘Consider it a donation,’” recalled Troupe.

In the summer of 1986, the group created two leagues, one meeting Tuesday nights at the courts and the other meeting Thursday nights, with nine pitchers each. Troupe displayed a plaque he was given at the end of that first season. “These plaques were

Jim Lafferty, and Harold Becker. Dick Wilson, president of the York County League, associated with the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA), provided information to help the group get started.

On May 31, 1986, the first nonsanctioned tournament was held at the park, with 10 pitchers taking part. On Aug. 2 and 3, 1986, the first NHPAsanctioned tournament was held at the site, with nearly 40 pitchers.

On April 2, 1985, Lafferty and Becker met with Warren Peachy at the New Holland Memorial Community Park on Jackson Street and presented him with a plan to install five courts in the area where the swimming pool had been located. Five regulation courts were completed in time for the Farm Show in October. “Horseshoe interest started with the Farm Show (tournament),” said Troupe. “That event was the catalyst that got it going.”

Troupe presented all the historical records to Loewen, who noted that it was “awesome” to have them and that NHAHS was grateful.

A Cappella Group To Perform In Park

At 1:30 p.m., the sirens could be heard as the emergency vehicles came up the hill and paraded first around the Farm Crest campus. They then proceeded to Wheat Ridge, where the trucks parked along the scenic ridge on the south side of the campus. First responders exited the trucks, pulled out equipment, and prepared to meet with those who had gathered. Fire safety packets were given to the children present.

Admission is free. Donations to the Eicher Arts Center Inc. will be accepted.Weather permitting, the performance will be held outside the Eicher House, and audience members are urged to bring folding chairs. In the event of extreme weather, the concert will be held inside the Eicher House. Audience members may bring protective face masks.

“This is my way of saying thank you to Fairmount,” Nolt pointed out, adding that he specifically remembered what it was like to live there when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place. “I know what it was like being on the inside looking

after a serious motorcycle accident,” explained Nolt, who spent nearly a year recovering and undergoing therapy at the rehabilitation center.

A parade of fire trucks (top left photo) at Fairmount was organized by Luke Nolt (top right photo), followed by a chance for residents and spectators to visit with the first responders (right photo).

Vocal Harmonix, an all-female a cappella chorus based in Lancaster County, will perform on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park.

Vocal Harmonix’s repertoire includes both old and new songs, and some of the selections are presented in a barbershop quartet style. One of the 21st-century songs to be performed at the Sept. 25 event is “Never Gonna Let You Down,” introduced by singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat in 2014. Vocal Harmonix uses costuming and choreography to add to the enjoyment of the audience, said Lois Smith, one of the two visual leaders of the chorus.
