Conestoga Christian School To Hold Barbecue, Auction W hile the event has been slightly modified this year due to COVID-19, Conestoga Christian School (CCS) will hold its 47th annual chicken barbecue and auction on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17. This year, the barbecue dinner will be takeout only. Each dinner will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a dinner roll and butter, a whoopie pie and a choice of water or lemonade. Half-chickens only will also be available. To order chicken barbecue tickets in advance, visit www.conestogachristian.net/ auction2020. Dinners may be picked up in the school’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 16. This year, drive-through dinner pickup will not be available at Conestoga Mennonite Church, located across from CCS. “We will turn our entire
school parking lot into a four-lane drive-through, explained Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. “We are trying to do everything as efficiently as possible. Also on Oct. 16, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and there will be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase. A live auction will be held on Oct. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. It will take place outside under a tent behind the elementary school. “Masks will be required inside and if social distancing cannot be achieved outside, Parris noted. This year, there will be no alumni game, no children’s area and no food tent. “ We downsized the amount of food we are serving. We will have a coffee area that will serve specialty coffees, cold drinks and our famous apple dumplings. They are made at the school on the Wednesday before (the auction) by parent volunteers, said Parris.
The live auction will feature a selection of items, experiences, artwork, quilts and homemade jams and yogurt. Auction highlights will include a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, a John Deere tractor, 150 gallons of heating oil and two-night stays at local inns, including Brownstone Colonial Inn Bed and Breakfast and Laurel Springs Guest House. In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes will include “The Great Outdoors and “Backyard Barbecue. There will also be a Penn State fan basket and baking and gardening baskets. Bidding on class baskets will start at 9:30 a.m. An online auction will run from Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 a.m. through Thursday, Oct. 29, at noon. At the beginning, the problem was transportation. This year’s event will have some changes due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We will not have children’s activities this year, but the playground will be open, said Dawn Ekdahl, executive director of Historic Poole Forge. “(The event) will be scaled down this year. Basically, it will be more of a car cruise with people driving in to display their cars. She added that the cars will not be judged this year and that visitors will be asked to practice social distancing. A highlight of the day is always when a professional photographer takes photos of the vehicles as they drive over the site’s covered bridge, which crosses the Conestoga River. “The photos will be printed on-site, and (car owners) will have an opportunity to buy them, Ekdahl noted. Craft vendors will be stationed outside this year instead of inside the Pool Forge Ironmaster’s Mansion, and a silent auction will also be located outside. Auction items will include gift cards

Virtual “MCC At 100 Event Planned Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in the U.S. invites its supporters and the public to join a livestreamed celebration of its 100 years of ministry on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6:50 p.m. Celebration 2020: MCC at 100 will include videos, storytelling, music, and a message from longtime MCC leader and pastor Leonard Dow of Philadelphia. The celebration also will include stories of MCC’s history told by storyteller Ken Sensenig, who is assistant director of MCC East Coast. Marcella Hostetler of Lancaster, who taught music in schools and directed music in churches for 30 years, is coordinating musical performances for the event in cooperation with a variety of musicians. This event replaces an inperson, multi-day celebration
that was originally scheduled for June in Lancaster County. That event was postponed due to the pandemic and is now a livestreamed service only. Participants can join the celebration at www.mcc.org/ celebration-2020. Video recordings of the event, subtitled in English and Spanish, will be posted at the same link a few days after the event. As the keynote speaker, Dow will reflect on the challenges MCC has experienced over the past 100 years and the strengths God developed in the organization as a result. With inspiration from Scripture, he will encourage MCC to use its best self to step boldly into the next century of ministry. Dow is a former MCC staff member and board leader. MCC began in 1920 when
groups of Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren formed a committee to provide food and other assistance to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief, encourages sustainable development, and strengthens peacebuilding initiatives in more than 50 countries. To coincide with the celebration, MCC is inviting congregations to receive a special offering to support MCC’s ministry. Congregations are welcome to plan offerings at their convenience. More details are available at www.mcc.org/centennial/ offering. To learn more and sign up for a calendar reminder, readers may visit mcc.org/cele bration-2020.

In New Holland, CrossNet executive director Meredith Dahl first contacted CSG when area students were waiting up to six months to receive services. Leanna Hassler, who received her master’s degree in clinical counseling from Alvernia University, was the first CSG employee to provide mental health services at TCC. Hassler, who has worked with children and families using ecosystemic structural family therapy, worked
closely with the advocates at The Factory Ministries, which is located at TCC, to connect with patients. In 2018, Hassler brought those same services to CrossNet, but she was soon joined in working outpatient settings by a second therapist. “We needed part of our clinicians time to be in the main office to help keep them connected to what we were doing in the larger clinic,” said Boer, who noted that about six months ago Angela Keller was brought in to

provide services at CrossNet. Keller has a master’s degree in social work from Millersville University, and she has worked in the mental health field since 2003. She utilizes a person-centered therapeutic approach. Prior to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hassler was visiting TCC each Monday and Tuesday to provide outpatient therapy by appointment. Hassler was also working at CrossNet, but eventually Keller took over visiting New Holland one day per week, and she was quickly filling appointments. “Both (counselors) work with people across the age range from children through adults,” said Boer. When the state was closed by COVID-19 restrictions in March, Boer reported that CSG quickly shifted most of its services to telehealth. “We began to meet … via video conferencing and phone appointments,” she said, noting that state regulations were changed to allow for these opportunities. “It was a big shift to implement, but it was something that our staff felt good about because they could safely meet with people,” said Boer, who noted that most clients said that they felt safer as well. “The move to telehealth allowed more flexibility in scheduling people (that the counselors had) met in community centers,” said Boer. The global pandemic impacted mental health, with CSG seeing an influx in need for services overall. Both counselors have continued to provide virtual appointments, which Boer said has gone well. State authorization for such visits has been extended until the end of 2020. Readers in Paradise may contact The Factory Ministries at 717-687-9594 about services. In New Holland, residents may call CrossNet at 717-355-2454. Individuals in either Paradise or New Holland may also call CSG directly at 877-907-7970 for more information about services. Boer mentioned that in the future when telemedicine is less prevalent, callers should mention if they want TCC or CrossNet when they call.

Market manager Annaruth Diller invites people to visit the Ephrata Farm and Art Market open Saturdays through October. representatives - also take part in the market. Diller listed makers of floral arrangements, soaps, spices, and woodcrafts among other vendors who have taken part. Beginning Sept. 19, a percentage of market proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. The benefit will continue through the end of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “The more vendors set up, the more donation,” said Sharon Harsh, a member of the Misfits on a Mission Relay team. “Of course, we want shoppers
to stop out (too),” added Harsh, who will have a table set up at the market to benefit the American Cancer Society. “We will have gift baskets, earrings, as well as (chances) to win cash.” Looking ahead, Diller said the market is hoping to offer monster truck rides before the venue closes for the year following the Oct. 31 market. “We plan to open up again in April 2021,” said Diller. When COVID-19 restrictions hit, businesses with services related to live entertainment lost business. Brian Gilpin, owner of Illusion Sound and Lighting of Ephrata, was among them. Looking to diversify, Gilpin contacted business acquaintance Annaruth Diller in mid-July. By July 25, Diller had organized Ephrata Farm and Art Market, which is now held each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1185 Division Highway (Route 322), Ephrata Gilpin’s place of business. “We’re still growing as people become more aware of (the market),” said Diller on a recent Saturday when about a dozen vendors had set up awnings at the spot. “Normally we have about 18 vendors,” noted Diller. Vendors are located on the west side of the building, with parking on the right. “The chicken barbecue is here weekly,” said Diller, referring to the origin of a pleasant aroma from the stand located closest to Route 322. Other food vendors include two bakers, and some stands carry produce. “We have artists who are here every week,” Diller noted. Vendors who sell knitted items such as hats, scarves, and shawls are on-site alongside jewelry crafters, and makers of home décor. Jewelry vendors - both handmade and home business

The pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple RV in East Earl, has seen a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority of those sales involved first-time buyers. “RVing is an alternative way to travel that allows families to social distance while traveling and while camping,” said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit together,” said Ash. However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles

per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but she has also seen bear, elk, fishers (which are similar to weasels or minks), foxes, coyotes, elk, deer, and flying squirrels. “You didn’t mention porcupines,” added Laura. Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. WE ARE
If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Bench Mark - Lifting Youths Up BY ANN MEAD ASH
Entering the Bench Mark facility on East Liberty Street in Lancaster is a little like entering a secret club. A short hallway leads to a door that opens into a room filled with serious weightlifting equipment. The brightly colored walls are covered with graffiti-like artwork paying homage to superheroes. According to founder and executive director Will Kiefer, the design is intentional. “We filled the space with color because we want it to be energetic,” said Kiefer. “We want it to be something that for (students who participate) feels very special,” he added, noting that the organization serves those ages 14 to 24. Most students are referred by a probation officer, therapist, or guidance counselor. Kiefer added that many students who come to Bench Mark to exercise are often caring for younger siblings at home. “When they come here, they have a place of respite … just to be out and exercising,” he said. Kiefer keeps the fridge stocked, and there are videos and planned discussions. “Sometimes kids need a space that’s cool to
connect with positive people,” he said. “We have almost everything a kid could want to do workout-wise.” However, according to Kiefer, Bench Mark is much more than a place to lift weights. “(When students) come in, they see the gym, but what they don’t see right away at the front of the gym are these two computers.” The computers are there because Bench Mark helps students with resume writing and job searching for both part-time and full-time jobs. “They walk right past (the computers), and that’s fine with us, but as we work with them (we) transition from ‘Let’s just exercise together’ to ‘Let’s talk about what you want to do.’” At the request of Lancaster’s probation department, Bench Mark launched Strength Based Skill Building (SBSB) in 2018. Transportation to the program is provided within a 12-mile radius. “A judge will look at a kid and say, ‘I think you will benefit from this type of fitness-based mentoring,’” said Kiefer, who developed the six-month program that covers foundational principles including legal life skills, common sense money fundamentals, mindfulness to engage focus, fitness, and what Kiefer calls “authentic communication.” “That’s teaching them

Bench Mark also offers a Student Leadership Program (SLP), which teaches students how to run the gym. The trainees meet weekly to learn to handle daily responsibilities and help students determine goals. “They have to show up at every meeting, commit to a regular work schedule, and be a resource to students,” said Kiefer. John Deslippe, who recently graduated from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, completed SLP and works at Bench Mark. He said that working there gives him a chance to give back. “When I was a student, it was
an outlet with positive role models,” he said. “I learned how to work out and how to use working out as a way to blow off steam.” Bench Mark has planned an unusual fundraiser for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25. The event will combine a 5K race with bench press reps or pushups. The 5K and pushups may be done virtually. The bench press will be held at Bench Mark, 341 E. Liberty St., Lancaster. Bench Mark is currently open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. More information about the program and the fundraiser may be found at www.benchmarkprogram.org.

Spot Booters Fall to Barons, Top Bears BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Garden Spot boys’ soccer team opened the week with a Section Two match at Manheim Central. The Spartans took a 1-1 score into halftime with Thomas Andress scoring the equalizer in the 32nd minute off a Jordan Martin assist. The Barons’ Connor Caterbone scored 14 minutes into the second half to give the home team a 2-1 edge, which held up as the margin of victory. “It was a back-and-forth game,” said first year head coach Ken Herr. “We’ve been good at scoring off set pieces, which was how we scored the equalizer. They scored off a corner kick.” Nate Reed gave Central a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the match. Garden Spot junior goalie Samuel Armbruster registered six saves as the team fell to 0-1-1. Garden Spot hosted Elizabethtown in another LancasterLebanon League game on Wednesday, winning 3-0. Herr was asked about the importance of getting that first win after a close loss. “It felt great,” he replied. “We had played two Section One teams in scrimmages with a win and a tie. So we started the season with confidence.” On a corner kick 38 minutes into the match Martin put Spot ahead 1-0. “It was deflected and it came back to him,” Herr explained. “He kept his composure, as a senior should, and did what he was supposed to do.” Late in the second half, George Rohrbaugh doubled the lead thanks to continued pressure on
the E-town goalie. “He missed on his clearance attempt,” Herr explained. “George, who had put a lot of pressure on the keeper, was able to capitalize.” Gage Bills added a third goal on a penalty kick with 30 seconds to play. Armbruster registered a shutout. “Our defense is something really special,” Herr said. “We nominate a ‘man of the match’ and in our first three matches they’ve all been defenders.” Martin is the defensive midfielder. The back four are Jack Bruggerman, Nick Gleanson, Max Leininger and Chris Wehn. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ match on Monday was an overtime heartbreaker with Central’s Hannah Adair scoring her second goal of the game in the 96th minute. Goalie Lindsey Watkins had seven saves in the match. Trailing 1-0, the Spartans evened the score in the 67th minute on Taylor Soehner’s goal off an assist by senior Britney Esh. Soehner had the lone goal in Wednesday’s loss to Elizabethtown. Ahead 1-0 at the half, Etown scored six times in the second half for a 7-1 win. The Spartans fell to 0-4 (0-3 league). CROSS COUNTRY The Garden Spot girls raced Section Two foes Columbia and Annville-Cleona at Columbia on Monday. The Dutchmen, by taking the top two overall places, won the race, slipping past Spot 25-30. Garden Spot and A-C both dominated Columbia 15-50. a time of 25:21. Amanda Coblentz’s 25:59 was good for fourth while Cloe Martin (27:06) took sixth. Also among the top-10 were Miryam Ambiz (9th, 28:42) and Bevalee Tshudy (10th, 28:43). The boys’ squad improved to 2-2 with outstanding finishes at Columbia. The Spartans topped A-C 20-43 and beat Columbia 2039. With Cleona’s Vince Krall winning the race and the Dutchmen placing five of the top-10, it was imperative that the Spartan runners come through. Josiah Martin, Alex McFalls, Zane Kauffman and Finn Wenrich earned second through fifth on the day. Sophomore Alan Krock finished 15th. FOOTBALL In their Section Three clash at Ephrata on Friday, September 25, the Spartans saw the Mountaineers slowly climb up in the second half en route to a 21-10 win. The loss dropped Spot to 0-2 (0-1 in L-L League). Ephrata improved to 1-1 (1-0). Jesse Martin’s three-yard rushing touchdown and Walker Martin’s PAT kick gave the Spartans a 7-0 lead in the second stanza. Before the half, the Mounts tied it on Joe Gunzehauser’s 25-yard TD toss to Brock Boyer. In the third quarter, Photo by Thom Swarr Gunzenhauser’s second TD pass Thomas Andress heads the ball for the Spartans during their 2-1, of the game made it 14-7. Joel Martin caught five of those passes for 42 yards. John Dykie rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries. VOLLEYBALL Three matches into the girls’ volleyball season, Garden Spot finds itself in a familiar spot first place. Spot won its third Section Two match with a 3-0 shutout of Elizabethtown on Tuesday evening. The night before at LampeterStrasburg, the Spartans won 3-0. The Spartans downed Elizabethtown 25-14, 25-15 and 2521. Logan Martin led with 14 kills and five aces. Abby O’Neill put up 29 assists. Trinity Xiong added six digs and Julia Ellsworth registered three blocks. Against L-S, Garden Spot won 25-5, 25-9, 25-22. Hannah Williams recorded four kills and five assists. Anya Myers and Brooke Smith each had four digs. Jenna Hoover and Alexis Moran each notched one block. Riley Stoltzfus served up one ace. tans fell to 2-1. Thanks to an Erin Gonzalez goal, Garden Spot held a 1-0 halftime lead. She scored at the 5:33 mark of the second quarter. Third-quarter goals by Molly Gray and Ashley Yoh gave Elco the lead for good. Spot was coming off a 4-0 win in its previous game - Friday, September 25. Gonzalez netted two goals in that contest while Lauren Esh and Katherine Swatski each added one. Swatski, Melanie Esh, and Brianna Hynson each provided an assist. Goalie Bryna

Women Helping Women Deborah’s Circle Forms At Temple Shaarai Shomayim of that plan was to make the group affordable. “We wanted to try to build this up within the temple community,” explained Selfon, who noted that Temple Shaarai Shomayim Rabbi Jack Paskoff puts an emphasis on charity and good deeds. “We do a lot of that, but we thought this would be something women specifically could get involved in,” Selfon said. According to Selfon, women’s philanthropy is growing by leaps and bounds, and she and Sterman saw that it was time for women in Lancaster to join the movement. “ We wanted our women to come to understand the ability they have with their own money to give and make decisions about how that money is given,” she said. “They can determine to whom it is given and for what.” A small group began meeting in the fall of 2019, giving themselves the name Deborah’s Circle. “We liked Deborah because she was smart and
strategic - a general and a judge,” said Selfon of the character from the Torah. She added that the concept of a circle was added because life revolves in a never-ending circle. The group’s mission is to provide financial grants to nonprofit organizations serving women and/or children in Lancaster County. “We wanted to keep it local and have it be about women or women and children,” Selfon said. The group that started with about six women around a table eventually grew to 17. Then, everything changed. “COVID came,” recalled Selfon, who noted that after that the group met via computer, determined to continue what they had started. A steering committee comprised of Selfon, Sterman, Robin Adler, Linda Hirsch, Nancy Kurland, Risa Paskoff, and Joan Sherman formed, and Deborah’s Circle kept meeting virtually. “ We needed to determine more about who we were and what we were going to be,” said Selfon, who noted that

About three years ago, Rosanne Selfon, former president of the international Women of Reformed Judaism, wanted to see a group of women at Temple Shaarai Shomayim take part in a pilot program of women helping women. While that program did not quite take off, Selfon was not ready to give up, and that determination resulted in significant contributions to two local nonprofit organizations. “About 18 months ago, we decided to try it again,” said Selfon, who co-chaired the group with Gail Sterman of Willow Valley Communities. “We started to talk,” said Selfon, who noted that Sterman was newly arrived from Jacksonville, Fla., at the time. “(Sterman) was very familiar with women’s collective giving. She had experience with it.” The two began to brainstorm. “We started thinking about what we had to do to make it work … and we laid out a plan,” said Selfon. Part

Members of Deborah’s Circle met electronically to present funds to two area organizations that help women and children.
the group set member contributions at $10 per month or $120 a year. In the throes of COVID-19 restrictions, the group had amassed about $2,000. “Originally, we were going to investigate some agencies and ask leaders to come and talk to us about needs,” said Selfon, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions stymied that plan. At first, the group was going to wait to distribute funds, but realizing that the needs local organizations were meeting were increasing, they decided to act. “ We called for an (online) meeting of the steering committee, and we agreed
to give some of the funds away to organizations that had pressing needs.” The group ultimately gave $750 each to Milagro House and the Lancaster County Food Hub. “The bottom line is that I would not have written a check for $750 to either one of them (by myself)” said Selfon, who noted what a delight it was to see the faces of the group members when the organizations were told about the funds they would receive. “We were all awestruck that 17 of us could do this, and we felt it made a big impact for the two organizations we gave money to.” With the group formed and
distributing funds, members are now looking to expand. “Women at other temples are being asked to join,” said Selfon. Selfon hopes to grow the group to about 40 or more members to make an even bigger impact. She pointed out that members need not be of the Jewish faith. “We say a prayer at the beginning of the meeting, but the rest of it is about doing good,” she said. “It’s about women working together to make the world as good as it can be.” Readers who would like more information may contact Temple Shaarai Shomayim at 717-397-5575.

Shelleen Weaver displays her book “Love Bird,” which is hot off the press.
BASIS (Brothers And Sisters In Support), a support group for bereaved parents, will host a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6:30 p.m. The topic will be “The Harvest of Grief.” For more information and directions, readers may call Calvary Monument Bible Church at 717-442-8161.
R063954
On her website, Shelleen Weaver describes herself as an author, speaker, singer, songwriter, wife, mother, friend, and daughter. She is also a New Holland resident and one who loves the Word of God. On Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m., Weaver will launch the first installment of her children’s series “Fruit Fables,” published by her own Haste Laud Press, the company she founded to help her share the stories she was telling her own children. “Love Bird,” recommended for children ages 4 to 8, will be the first book of nine based on the biblical Fruits of the Spirit. It tells the tale of a squirrel family that notices a new neighbor above their home in the oak tree. When they go to introduce themselves, the neighbor, who is a bird, rudely chatters right back at them. During the night, the family hears the bird offending all its neighbors. Quickly, a meeting is called, and the animals decide to only speak kind words to the offensive bird, causing him to return kind words back to them. “When you choose to love this way, you may see it returned to you,” said Weaver, who added, “(The book is) teaching that love is sometimes a choice you will yourself to carry out. It’s an action, and it’s hard work.” Weaver explained that the stories are meant to teach. “Because I am a mom, the moral of the story is ... if I am going to work to be creative like that, you’re going to get a lesson,” she said. Each book will end with a section called “Let’s Chew on It.” In “Love Bird,” that section includes seven questions, such as “How would you feel if someone was
rude to you?” and “The next time someone is unkind to you, how could you respond?” The book also includes a Bible verse, a short prayer, and a theme song. The “Fruit Fables” series was written with encouragement from Weaver’s brother, who overheard her telling her then 3-year-old son Tyler a bedtime story. Some time later when she was caring for a nephew who had cancer, she found herself exhausted, but struggling to sleep. “I couldn’t turn my head off,” recalled Weaver, who began writing stories to help herself calm down. After her nephew passed away, Weaver looked over the stories she had written. “They were all using animals to unpack a lesson,” she said, adding that she realized she had the makings of a series on the Fruits of the Spirit. Around the same time, she began talking to other local writers, and she attended a 2015 Christian writers’ conference in Hershey. Following the conference, she took a year to work on other projects, but in 2016, she returned to pitch the books for publication. Although Weaver had interest from a publisher, she ultimately decided to publish through her own company, which she named Haste Laud based on the words in the song “What Child Is This?” “Jesus said, ‘If I am lifted up, I will draw men unto Me,’” explained
