Prior to 2020, residents at Fairmount volunteered at UNTO, a ministry based in Mount Joy, that works with “strategic global partnerships to relieve suffering through humanitarian aid in more than 75 countries.”

In June of this year, residents Elizabeth Bell, Arlene Shenk, and Irvie and Edith Leaman drove to UNTO to help with a special packing week. “We were so impressed with what we saw and experienced that we immediately got a date for Oct. 18 during their packing project week. UNTO holds those weeks twice a year,” reported Bell.

Bell and Shenk shared their experience at UNTO with others in their fiber arts group called Knitting Together. By August, Bell was asking wellness coordinator Nancy Silverstein to arrange for a group to visit UNTO in October. “I wasn’t able to register us until Sept. 1,” said Silverstein, who worked with fellow wellness coordinator Deyna Hrishka to put together the trip. Ultimately, more than 20 Fairmount residents boarded a bus on the morning of Oct. 18 and traveled to

UNTO where they worked fairly steadily from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on a variety of tasks.

Sandra Leonard knotted comforters along with two other women from Fairmount, while her husband, Keith, put together bracelets that were headed to South America. “The comforters will be shipped to wherever they are needed outside the United States,” said Sandra, who noted that she had an opportunity to sew on a machine as well.

Edith Lorah created bracelets and also filled schoolbags with a notebook, stickers, a ruler, crayons, pencils, pens, and erasers. “It was like an assembly line,” said Lorah, who noted that several children were helping to fill the schoolbags as well, including one toddler who sat on the floor scooping toothbrushes into a box for pickup. The schoolbags make it possible for children in certain countries to attend school where they are required to have the items in the bags.

Sally and Gordon Landis worked together on the wordless bracelets that use different colored beads to tell the Gospel story. “We did that for four hours, but it didn’t seem like it,” said

Sally. “There are people across from you and beside you, and there’s a lot of good conversation.” Gordon added that it takes about two minutes to complete one bracelet.

Silverstein also took items made by residents to donate. “We have a number of people who work on their own making bags with handles, dresses, caps, blankets, scarves,” she said. Bell’s group sent along 36 hats. The group has donated more than 600 hats over the last few years.

“At the end of the session, they had (completed) 1,500 pallets of school packages, and they were ready to be shipped,” said Lorah. “We gathered around the pallets and had prayer and that was very moving.”

Bell was happy to see how successful the trip was. “Little did I realize that there would be this many people,” she said. “All glory to the Lord.”

“We have so much going on here in Ephrata that we truly can create a destination,” said Joy Ashley, executive director of Mainspring of Ephrata. Ashley is looking forward to sharing the many holiday events being planned in Ephrata with area residents from all around the county.

“We have very enriching activities and events planned,” she added, referencing the schedule

Saturday, Nov. 5, was a beautiful fall day in Manheim. The sun shone in the parking lot at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on North Penryn Road, and the breeze brew subtly through the colored leaves. Inside, however, the fun was fierce and so was the competition. The 20 members of the Chuckie Magee flag football teams and half a dozen cheerleaders enjoyed the last game of the season. abilities and disabilities. The Cowboys in blue and the Eagles in green lined up for play after play.

When the Eagles scored, a volunteer played “Fly Eagles Fly” and members of the Eagles team began to sing. Cowboys coach Randy Samuels quickly approached a reporter on the sidelines, saying, “You need to put this in this article, so everyone reads it. This song they are playing now is officially banned from this league.”

Laughter ensued, and Rita Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, which is the parent organization of the league, said, “Randy is brutal. He is in everyone’s face. He is just so much fun, and everyone gives it right back to him.”

As Paskoff finished talking, Eagles team member JJ intercepted a football and ran the length of the gym for a touchdown. Cheers erupted. “That

was great,” Paskoff told JJ. “Good for you!”

Following the final game, a banquet was held at the church. Awards, trophies, and medals were given out, and participants, parents, coaches and volunteers, including Randy’s wife, Doris, and Chuck and Bev Magee, parents of Chuckie, for whom the league is named, enjoyed pizza from Jersey Mike’s Subs and Rita’s Italian Ice. “The church has been wonderfulso supportive and helpful,” said Paskoff, who added that sponsors who have contributed to expenses include Costanzo Wealth Management, 4 Cole’s KIDS, Bomberger’s, Executive Printing, and Lanco Federal Credit Union.

The league has been so successful, the group is talking about organizing a similar program around a different sport during the winter season from January to March,

which will be followed in April by Challenge Baseball. “These (participants) are older than 21, so this was a nice way to segue into serving an older group, which is where we want to go,” explained Paskoff.

Aaron’s Acres will be taking part in the ExtraGive 2022 online fundraising event to be held on Friday, Nov. 18. On that day, representatives of the organization will visit sev-

eral county locations, including Grand Central Bagel from 7 to 10 a.m., Jersey Mike’s Subs at the Belmont Shoppes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Dale High Leadership Center from 3 to 6 p.m., and Tellus 360 from 2 to 7 p.m. Readers who wish to support the organization during the ExtraGive may visit www.extragive.org.

Spartans

The Dover Eagles pulled away late in the second half of their District Three Class 5A opening-round playoff game with Garden Spot, winning 40-21 on their home turf Friday night, November 4.

Aric Campbell, who completed nine passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns, scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper and later hit Brayden Zirkie on a 31-yard

First Playoff Appearance Since 2014

scoring pass to give the Eagles their 40-21 lead in the fourth quarter. Coming into the final stanza, the Spartans (7-4) were within striking distance, trailing 28-21. Woven between a blocked punt that led to the first score of the game for Dover (9-2) and Campbell’s first of two one-yard sneaks, Garden Spot scored on two big plays.

Blake Weaver sprinted to the Dover endzone from 72 yards out and was on the receiving end of a Kye Hart-

ing 81-yard TD pass, making it 14-14 in a wild opening period. The Eagles responded on a big play of their own as Gavin Mullins (24 carries, 140 yards) scored on an 80yard rushing TD.

Harting’s two-yard touchdown runs, and Nick Gleason’s third PAT kick of the night again tied the score, making it 21-21 in the second quarter. The Eagles would carry that 28-21 lead into the locker room at halftime on Garon Quillen’s

rushing touchdown.

Aided by those two big scores, Weaver finished the night with 260 yards from scrimmage. He had six carries for 116 yards and caught four passes for 146 - one touchdown rushing and one receiving.

Harting completed 13 of 30 passes for 233 yards. The Dover defense picked off three passes, making their defense a tough challenge for the Spartans comeback bid.

Zac Nagle caught five of Harting’s passes for 53 yards. With the 233 yards passing, Harting finished just shy of throwing for

2,000 yards on the year. He had 133 completions for 1970 yards (20 TD’s) while also running for 1108 yards and 13 touchdowns.

“Kye Harting became only the 11th quarterback in Lancaster-Lebanon League history to run for and pass for 1000 yards,” head coach Matt Zamperini pointed out.

“Zac Nagle, Blake Weaver, Jadon Burkholder, Nick Gleason and Gabe Smeltz were the senior field leaders who helped us with our first winning season and playoff appearance since 2014,” Zamperini added. “Harting and Reed Gruber were the

junior field leaders who contributed greatly.”

Weaver finished with over 1,100 yards on offense, catching 19 passes for 452 yards while leading the running backs in rushing yardage with 659 with seven touchdowns.

Nagle was the leading receiver for the Spartans52 receptions for 850 yards and eight TD’s Conrad added 275 receiving yards to the offense with his 21 receptions.

Burkholder carried the rushing responsibilities also with 58 carries and 405 yards, scoring five TD’s.

The Adamstown Area Library, 110 W. Main St., Adamstown, will host an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, to celebrate the second year in the new library building as well as the ExtraGive. The library will offer refreshments, a Thanksgiving basket giveaway, crafts for kids, music, games, and tours of the building.

The library invites the community to come out to see all the

improvements made since last year, enjoy free refreshments and entertainment, and learn about the services the library offers. For more information, call 717-484-4200.

Additionally, the library will collect food donations in lieu of fines through Food for Fines. On Monday to Wednesday, Nov. 21 to 23, library patrons may bring unexpired, unopened, nonperishable food donations to

the desk and the library will waive up to $6 in fines from their account. This will apply only to fines on Adamstown Area Library items, not lost items or items checked out from other Lancaster County libraries.

Donations will then be dropped off to the First Friday Food Drive at Warehouse 916 on Dec. 2. Real Life Community Services distributes this food to

local families each month through the Cocalico Food Pantry. All items should be good through the end of 2022.

Regular library hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The library will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday, Nov. 25, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Historic Poole Forge To Hold Online Auction

Historic Poole Forge will host a 24-hour online auction on Friday, Nov. 18. Items that will be available include various classes and services donated by local businesses, as well as the featured item - a community quilt.

This year’s quilt has been created with an intricate design of owls. “Every year at Poole Forge we do a community quilt. All the different patches are made by members of the community,” explained Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “Last year, we got the idea to do owls. I brought some patterns and sent them out into the community. It was really challenging; you can see from the design. This year was special because normally we do something much simpler.”

Community members were encouraged to create squares to contribute to the quilt. “It took a lot of work. The ladies all got together in September and quilted it,” Ekdahl noted.

State Police To Offer Law Enforcement Training Program

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”

Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.

“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”

Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are

(learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed

out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between

young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to

have that accessibility in the community.”

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

Blood Donor Eligibility Criteria Updated

The American Red Cross invites those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, or France and have never tried to give blood due to concerns over variant CreutzfeldtJakob disease (vCJD), related to mad cow disease, to give blood. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its blood donor eligibility guidance on vCJD, eliminating the deferral for those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, and France between 1980 and 2001.

In alignment with FDA changes, the Red Cross began accepting donations from individuals who have not tried giving blood before

due to the prior donation criteria. In combination with prior eligibility updates in 2020 for those who spent time in other European countries, this new change effectively eliminates the deferral related to vCJD for all donors.

More people, especially those with type O blood, are urged to donate. Book a time to give by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.redcrossblood.org, or by calling 800-733-2767.

As a thank you, donors who give through Monday, Oct. 31, will be emailed an electronic gift card to a merchant of their choice.

Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, has announced upcoming events.

As a part of the Saturday Evening Concert Series, Auscultation Brass will perform on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in the chapel. The ensemble consists of physicians from various specialties. Donations will be accepted at the door.

The Garden Spot Village Train Room and Wood Shop will hold open house events on Saturdays, Nov. 26 to Dec. 17, from 1:30 to 4 p.m., as well as Fridays, Dec. 23 and 30, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. In the Train Room, guests of all ages may visit the HO-gauge train layout, which includes Thomasville and the Talk With Thomas event. The Ogauge layout includes an elevated track, and both layouts provide plenty of train action complemented with heavily detailed scenery. Admission is free. In the Wood Shop, visitors may discover handcrafted wood items, including games,

puzzles and wood-turned pens.

Ned

Bustard will read his children’s book, “Saint Nicholas the Giftgiver,” hourly beginning at 10:30 a.m., and he will offer printmaking workshops

featuring images from his book for a fee. For a fee, families may have their photo taken with an antique tractor decorated for Christmas.
