Scouts Serve, Learn, And Achieve In 2020 oy Scout Troop 97 of Middletown sought to face the challenges of 2020 with all the qualities named in the Boy Scout Oath and Law, and the outcome was a year of accomplishments and celebrations. To start 2020, Scoutmaster Bill Lee congratulated Owen Wealand and Cole Carlson on becoming Eagle Scouts, the highest Scouting rank, on Jan. 11. In February, the troop had its annual Klondike campout at Hidden Valley Scout Reservation (HVSR), where participants engaged in team-building exercises and a snowless sled race. Elections for new Scout leaders were held, community services hours were volunteered at the Londonderry Fire Company’s fish fry, and Junior Leadership Training was started by Lee prior to the pandemic’s impacting the troop’s calendar of events. Although scheduled activities had

camp, which utilized the natural resources in Middletown for skill instruction, hiking, canoeing, camping, cooking, and completing the Welding Merit Badge conducted by Assistant Scoutmaster Matt Pauley. Lee announced a third Eagle Scout, Jason O’Donnell, on July 23, and a fourth Eagle Scout, Kyle Hoyt, on Oct. 24. Although the bridging ceremony for the Webelos was delayed several months, it was eventually able to take place. Scouts and their families met at an outdoor venue to honor Scouts and their achievements. In addition to youth rank advancements and earned merit badges, Troop 97 recognized Lee’s completion of Wood Badge, an advanced national leadership course designed “to develop skilled leaders who can strengthen Scouting units in achieving the mission of the Boy Scouts of America.” In October, Troop 97 participated
in the Wilderness Survival Weekend at HVSR, and eight Scouts earned the corresponding merit badge. In October, many youths and leaders volunteered time, equipment, and muscle on Beaver Day to cut wood and clean up around the Londonderry Scouting Complex. Troop 97 participated in the annual national Scouting for Food program in November, and with the combined efforts of Cub Scout Pack 97 and residents of Middletown, food donations exceeded the previous two years, with more than 24,000 items collected. To round out the year, members of Troop 97 visited King’s Gap State Park and spent the day improving their orienteering skills by using maps and compasses to find points on a designated course. Troop 97 is sponsored by Londonderry Fire Company.

Like food banks across the nation, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been challenged during the coronavirus pandemic. However, thanks to donations from local businesses, help from governmental programs, the generosity of the community and the services of volunteers, the food bank remains committed to fulfill its mission, “fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities.” The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is headquartered in Harrisburg with a second location in Williamsport. It serves 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through a network of more than 1,000 partner agencies and programs. More than 60% of the clients the food bank serves are working families with children.

Transit Entities Plan Merger Capital Area Transit (CAT) and rabbittransit recently announced plans to merge into a single entity to be called the Susquehanna Regional Transportation Authority. The merger is intended to provide opportunities for increased levels of mobility and result in improved efficiencies for operations. The new, joint authority will be able to leverage the buying power of a larger organization, eliminate duplicative operations, and have greater opportunity to qualify for discretionary grants. As a result, CAT and rabbittransit intend to offer enhanced services, including a single fare payment system, expanded call center hours, improved connections to large regional employers, enhanced service to regional health care programs, and enhanced connectivity between campuses
for students. The merger will help avoid a proposed 40% reduction in service at CAT, which has been struggling financially. Additionally, it is not expected to have any impact on current bus drivers or mechanics at either agency. CAT and rabbittransit noted that in 2014, transit agencies in Berks and Lancaster counties went through a similar merger. The next step in the process is for the two authorities to hold public hearings on the proposal and then adopt resolutions. The CAT board of directors is set to meet on Thursday, Jan. 28, at noon, and the rabbittransit board of directors will meet on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. The public is invited to join by Zoom or phone. To register for the public hearing, community members may contact info@rabbit transit.org or 800-632-9063.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Anne Marie McAlester became executive director of Hope Within Ministries in October 2019, she started thinking about changing the sign outside the Elizabethtown organization. “I felt it didn’t communicate everything we are about,” she said. So last fall, she applied for a community awareness grant through Hershey Medical Center and received funding for a new sign. The sign, at 4748 East Harrisburg Pike, now reads “Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center.” “We are a free primary medical care clinic, and we’ve been offering that since 2006,” McAlester noted. “In 2014, we added counseling, and we hoped to add dental in (early 2020), but COVID pushed that back until we finally opened our dental clinic in July 2020.” McAlester said the nonprofit provides primary care for uninsured, low-income people in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. “These are people who work part-time hours without benefits or people who have lost their jobs or are unemployed,” she explained. Counseling is offered on a sliding-scale payment plan and is open to anyone, with no income qualifications. All medical services are provided by volunteers, including a volunteer psychiatrist who comes in twice a month. “We use a battalion of volunteer medical providers who work full time somewhere else but volunteer here a few hours a month,” McAlester noted. “We use graduate students under the supervision of
licensed counselors for our mental health counseling.” She added that the organization hopes to expand its dental clinic but is in need of more volunteer dentists. Over the last year, Hope Within has seen a rising need for its services. “Across the board, we’ve seen huge increases. We’re seeing people who have lost their jobs, people who are afraid of losing their jobs. We’ve seen a major spike in requests for services. We have people who can no longer afford insulin or asthma medication,” McAlester remarked. “These medications are very expensive.” The organization typically holds four fundraisers throughout the year, but had to cancel all of them in 2020. Hope Within is planning a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, she noted, with more information coming soon on the organization’s Facebook page. “We’ll ask people to donate to us, and in return, we’ll send a personalized card out on their behalf,” McAlester explained. Along with financial constraints, the organization lost a lot of volunteer office staff and a few doctors, many of whom are elderly and were worried about the risk of continuing to volunteer during a pandemic. Despite these challenges, McAlester remains hopeful that Hope Within will continue to thrive. “We are a Christian ministry, and our faith is strong,” she stated. “We rely on our faith, and we have found that God has been faithful. Even though this past year has been hard, we have surpassed whatever goals we have set.”
Windborne Presents Virtual Concert The Susquehanna Folk Music Society will present an online concert featuring the a cappella group Windborne on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. Preceding the concert will be an online community sing from 4 to 5 p.m. Windborne, a quartet of young singers from New England, reflects the singing traditions of Eastern Europe and North America. Concert programs include songs from Corsica, the Republic of Georgia, Bulgaria, Quebec, and the Basque country, as well as traditional and original American folk music. The Windborne singers grew up immersed in the traditional song and dance communities of New England and discovered a love of world folk music in their teens. Over the past decade, Windborne has sought out masters of traditional singing styles in the U.S. and around the world to study a variety of vocal music. The
group specializes in close harmony singing. Participants attending the community sing via Zoom will learn a selection of songs from Windborne’s “Song on the Times” songbook. Members of the quartet will discuss each song’s origins and encourage conversation about the content of the song and how it may be meaningful in the current times. With participants muted, singers of all levels can join in from the comfort of their home. Windborne’s livestreamed conWindborne will offer a free livestreamed concert on cert will incorporate stories and Sunday, Jan. 24. notes about the traditions from which the group’s songs spring. Hi, everybody! OK, who still has up their Christmas lights? MEEEE! That’s who! Hahaha! I even still have up my fully decorated Christmas tree and train platform. My hubby and I are trying to stretch out as much Christmas happiness as possible. But I promise I will take my tree down by February. Not sure about the outside lights though. Since my lights are all blue and white, they will just be my winter decorations now. Let God Hold Your Hand One day a man was crossing a bridge in life, but was scared, so he turned and asked God, “Can I hold your hand so I may not fall?” God said, “No, my child, I will hold your hand.” The man asked, “What’s the difference?” God replied, “If you hold my hand and something happens, you might let go. But if I hold your hand, no matter what happens, I will never let you go.” May the Lord hold your hand tightly in all your ways in 2021 and beyond 2021! Wishing you a blessed new year! 4. In a large bowl, stir together seasoning mix, sour cream, butter, whole kernel corn, cream-style corn, corn muffin mix and sausage. 5. Pour into a greased casserole dish. 6. Bake for 45 minutes or until set in the middle. 7. Sprinkle cheese on top and continue to bake until cheese is melted, about 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand at least 5 minutes. Serve warm.

Open Stage began streaming a staged production of “Kafka’s Shorts” on Jan. 8, and the production will be available on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and on Sundays at 3 p.m. through Sunday, Jan. 24. Viewers may watch at www.youtube.com /openstage and www.fb.com /openstagehbg. The production continues the theater’s unconventional 35th season, wherein the staff has planned and produced staged performances that are filmed and may be streamed on TVs, computers, and smart devices. Kafka was a Bohemian novelist and short story writer best known for “The Metamorphosis.” The stories in “Kafka’s Shorts,” adapted by David Karl Lee, include “A Country Doctor,” “The Hunger Artist,”
and “A Report to an Academy.” The compilation combines absurdity, humor, and tragedy. The play was filmed using CDC guidelines on social distancing and mask wearing and is the first show to feature an expanded cast in Open Stage’s season. Actors who had been living or working together were able to act together in scenes, noted director Chris Gibson.
The Hershey Public Library has added two virtual programs to its calendar of activities. Readers may register by visiting www.hersheylibrary.org and clicking on Events Calendar. After registration, attendees will receive the Zoom link. Lancaster County Parks and Recreation will offer a children’s program titled “Birds in Winter” on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 11 a.m. to noon. Attendees will learn how to identify and help local birds in the winter. A Dinosaur Mysteries Virtual Tour will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. Attendees will take a virtual
tour of the “Dinosaur Mysteries” exhibit at the Maryland Science Center, led by the science center’s paleontologist. Participants will discover how fossils are found and what fossils can indicate about dinosaurs’ life cycles, diets, behaviors, and ecosystems. After the tour, there will be an opportunity to do two handson activities in one’s own home. These programs are sponsored by Friends of the Hershey Public Library. Readers may contact Rita Smith, children’s librarian, at 717-5336555 with any questions.
