GREATER HERSHEY AREA ALSO SERVING HUMMELSTOWN AND MIDDLETOWN
Hershey High School’s Class of 1979 will hold a fundraiser golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Deer Valley Golf Course, 101 Stoudt Road, Hummelstown. Funds raised will help to offset the health care costs faced by a 1981 alumnus who is battling multiple serious health issues. The tournament is the brainchild of several classmates who golfed together when in town for their 40th high school class reunion. They were inspired to reconnect and play together again before the next reunion, and they also expanded the event, called Another Shot at Deer Valley, to include other players and sponsors in an effort to raise money to help their friend with his medical expenses.

Lancaster County has a rich geologic history, and Jeri Jones loves to highlight it. He will offer a geologic tour of the Haldeman Mansion property on Saturday, Aug. 21, beginning at 10 a.m. The tour will be held on the grounds of the mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. Jones, who operates Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove, said the program will feature stations set
up around the mansion. “I will be talking about several different topics,” he stated. “I’ll talk about the building stone that’s on the mansion, which includes limestone that was quarried on the property.” He will include interactive demonstrations to help attendees identify different types of rock used to build the 18th-century home. The mansion makes a perfect site for the program, said Jones, who has given multiple talks at the location.
“The Haldeman Mansion itself is really neat in terms of geology. It’s located between the oldest rocks and the youngest rocks in Lancaster County,” he said. Jones will also discuss local geology around the mansion and will highlight the geologic history of the Susquehanna River, which the mansion overlooks. “The river has a fascinating history,” Jones remarked. His tour will also include information about Samuel Haldeman, who

Non-golfers are welcome to join alumni for lunch by Lisa’s Café. The cost for lunch will go toward additional alumni facing health concerns and medical costs. was born in the home in 1812. Haldeman played a significant role in local geology, including discovering skolithos, a type of fossil, in the Chickies Rock area. “He had a vast knowledge of a lot of subjects,” Jones noted, including history and languages. “He’s someone you wish you could have met in person.” Jones will conclude his tour with an overall view of the geology of Lancaster County as a whole. Although the topic of his tour has a scientific focus, Jones emphasized that the program will appeal to a wide audience. “I’ll be delivering the information in a sense that you don’t have to have any knowledge of geology to enjoy the program,” he explained. “I’ll speak in layman’s terms. It’s a good program for anyone with an interest in history, anyone who enjoys the outdoors or anyone who enjoys science.” Jones said the program will also be infused with his trademark sense of humor. “I’m famous, or maybe I should say infamous, for my jokes,” he stated. “I want to make it a fun program for everyone.” For more information or to register for the program, call Elaine Jackson at 717-426-3794 or email her at elainekjackson1936@comcast.net.

New Dog Rescue Seeks Fosters, Volunteers BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Davis Dog Farm is a new, nonprofit all-breed rescue located in Grantville that has a mission to provide a safe haven for dogs until they can find their forever homes. Currently, the rescue is in need of local residents willing to foster a dog or volunteer at the facility as a dog walker or someone who visits with the dogs until they are permanently adopted. A number of dogs that have been rescued by the organization are also available for adoption. “We take dogs from private surrenders - owners that can’t keep their dog any longer,” explained rescue founder Janea Davis, who volunteered for the past 15 years fostering dogs for other local rescues. “We pull dogs from shelters and help other rescue groups if they get overwhelmed. We also take dogs from bad situations where they are not being cared for.” Some dogs receive training in basic obedience to make them more adoptable. “They learn how to break bad behaviors like jumping up and
stealing food,” Davis explained. “The goal is to really know the dog well before we get them ready for adoption.” Further, dogs that live at the farm are given plenty of opportunities to walk the grounds, swim in the pond and spend time with volunteers. “(My husband, Brian, and I) bought the house in October of 2020 specifically for the rescue. Five acres are devoted to the dogs, and we have a pond that we keep clean and healthy for the dogs to enjoy,” Davis said. “It’s been a big pleasure for us to see people hang out with the dogs and play.” Volunteers also visit with the dogs in different social settings at the farm. “We want them to become socialized and not kept in a kennel while waiting to be adopted,” noted Davis. “There is a patio that is fenced in where volunteers can (play) with the dogs. We want people to eat around them to teach food manners and cuddle with them like they would in their living room. We expose them to all different environments. They get human interaction all day.”
Davis Dog Farm is located at 2686 Davis said those who wish to foster a dog should keep in mind the Sand Beach Road, Grantville. For important role they play in the dog’s more information about volunteerlife, especially at that difficult time ing or fostering or to view adoptable when a foster family has to let the dogs, visit www.davisdogfarm.com. The ultimate goal is to construct a building on the property specifically for the dogs and volunteers. “We’re hoping to build a facility that looks like a house with a living room setting and a kitchen, and people can spend time with the dogs, and they will get Molly is currently available for that real home feel,” adoption from the Davis Dog Farm, founded by Janea Davis. for the summer,” noted church member Patty Kuharic, one of the event organizers. “During the school year, we meet on Wednesday nights for dinner and classes. In the summer, we gather once a month to stay in touch. We will resume our normal schedule of events in September.” Kuharic noted that organizers chose food trucks that offer a variety of menu items. “We wanted to offer dinner that was not extremely expensive and that adults and kids would like,” she said, noting that college housing is located next to the church. “College students might want to pop over and get some coffee or a smoothie. We will have a nice variety.” Activities will take place in the large parking lot in back of the church. “Our parking lot will have 20 to 25 tables with chairs so that people will hopefully linger, talk and make new friends,” noted Kuharic. “People are welcome to sit and gather, and there will be information about our fall programming and upcoming events.” After “Food Trucks & Friends,” the next church outreach will be Blessing of the Backpacks on Sunday, Aug. 29. All local students are invited to attend a worship service
at 10 a.m. in the outdoor church pavilion followed by a picnic lunch. Kids should bring their backpacks, and the church will provide some basic school supplies. Challenge will culminate with the Capital Region Heart Walk on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Harrisburg City Island. The Heart Walk will be chaired by Emily Bumgarner, registered dietitian for Weis Markets. The Heart Walk will unite the community in celebrating health and honoring survivors. Hynoski and Bumgarner will be joined by other likeminded city executives working to increase physical and mental health, combat burnout, and promote community engagement. The executive committee members include John Hickey, UPMC Health Plan; John Rampulla, Deloitte Consulting; Art Pursel, Deloitte Consulting; Josh Hocker, Orrstown Bank; Greg Weldon, TE Connectivity; Ursula Siverling, McNees Wallace and Nurick; and Jessica Kazmaier,
Heart Walk and all Heart Challenge events fund the mission of the American Heart Association to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives while supporting priority issues in the Harrisburg area. Improving blood pressure management, reducing food insecurity, and stopping youth vaping have been identified by the American Heart Association’s Capital Region board as priorities to propel work to support the association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal to reduce barriers to health care access and quality. To learn more about engaging a workforce in Heart Challenge events or to register for the Heart Walk, visit www.heart.org/capitalregion walk or contact Ann Shields at ann.shields@heart.org for more information.
Group Plans Virtual Guitar Summit The Susquehanna Folk Music Society will present a virtual Guitar Summit on Sunday, Aug. 22, at 7:30 p.m. Bluegrass star Chris Eldridge, Celtic guitarist John Doyle and fingerstyle/blues artist Happy Traum will converse and perform to explore the guitar: one of the defining instruments of modern folk music. Eldridge is the founder of the bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters and a member of the Punch Brothers. He was the house guitarist on the public radio show “Live From Here” from 2016 to 2020 and plays in a duo with guitarist Julian Lage. His work has earned him two Grammy awards, a Grammy nomination, and awards from the IMBA and the Americana Music Association. Doyle plays folk and traditional Irish music both in the studio and on the road. He has toured with Chanting House and Solas, played duos
with Liz Carroll and Karan Casey, and accompanied Joan Baez, Eileen Ivers, Tim O’Brien, Linda Thompson, Seamus Egan, and others. He also composes and produces. Traum is a folk singer, writer, teacher, recording artist, and fingerstyle guitarist. He was an active part of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1950s and ’60s and studied guitar with blues master Brownie McGhee. He and his brother Artie played as a duo until Artie’s death in 2008. Over the past five decades, Traum has performed extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan. He and his wife, Jane, operate Homespun Tapes, which offers music lessons through DVDs, CDs, books, and downloads. There is a suggested donation for admission. Registration is required at www.SusquehannaFolk.org. For more details, visit the aforemen- John Doyle (left), Happy Traum (center), and Chris tioned website or call 717-745-6577. Eldridge will perform and chat at the Guitar Summit.

The Susquehanna Chorale will perform at Mount Gretna’s open-air Tabernacle on Sunday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. as part of its summer concert series, “Through Love to Light.” The program will begin with expressions of faith, from the exuberant to the pensive. Attendees will be invited to join the chorale in song and then to listen to music played by the chorale’s pianist, Daniel Dorty. The concert will include three hymn settings. It will feature “Look to This Day,” written for the chorale by the late C.
Thomas Schwalm, the group’s accompanist for many years, along with “You Are the New Day,” which was written during a period of deep despair, but expresses hope for the future, and “Through Love to Light.” The chorale is an award-winning adult chamber ensemble of 38 auditioned singers. It was founded in 1981 by Linda L. Tedford, who serves as artistic director and conductor. For more information, visit www.susquehannachorale.org.
Local author Christy Dietz recently published her first book, a young adult dystopian thriller titled “Serpentine.” The Hershey resident and Middletown teacher will sign and sell copies of her book from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Aug. 21 and Sept. 18, at the Market on Chocolate, which is held in the area adjacent to the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department. “Serpentine” tells the story of Esther, an orphan who becomes the leader of the resistance after the United States is taken over by a sinister group called the Federation. Those in the resistance are willing to sacrifice their lives for freedom, God, and an everlasting hope.
Although “Serpentine” is Dietz’s debut novel, she has been writing since she picked up her first crayon. One of four daughters, she spent her childhood years dreaming of becoming Jo from Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women.” She has two young sons. For more information, visit www.christydietz.com.

Providing Help And Hope Outside a nonprofit in Elizabethtown, a field of dahlias is raising hope. The flowers are handpicked by volunteers and sold throughout the summer to raise money for Brittany’s Hope. It’s just one way the organization supports its mission of creating lasting change in the lives of orphaned and at-risk children. Brittany’s Hope was named for Brittany Ann O’Connell, who died in a car accident in 1999. Brittany was one of 12 adopted children and three biological children of the Abel family, who created the organization to spotlight vulnerable children around the world. “My parents would travel to other countries and realized there are so many special needs children who are left behind in orphanages,” said Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope. “They were essentially being warehoused, with little caregiving.” Brittany’s Hope specializes in helping special needs children, which Sahd explained could include a child with physical or developmental delays as well as hard-to-place older children or children with siblings who want to be adopted together.
Sahd was adopted from Vietnam at age 9 and often accompanied her parents on trips to the country, where she served as an interpreter. “I’ve been involved in the work of Brittany’s Hope since I was 15 years old,” she said, noting that the organization has two pathways of support. Brittany’s Hope works with adoption agencies to provide adoption grants and provides humanitarian aid in Vietnam, Ethiopia and Kenya. “We do amazing work, but of course I am biased,” Sahd stated. “But especially in this past year, when more children have been at risk due to the pandemic and economic downturn, our mission is needed more than ever.” The heartbeat of Brittany’s Hope is its volunteers, Sahd remarked, including the people who cut and sell the dahlias, as well as volunteers who help the organization with other fundraising events such as its upcoming Brittany’s Ball on Saturday, Sept. 11. “This will be our second gala, and we’re very excited,” she said. “Last year’s gala was a lifeline of support for orphaned and at-risk children, and we hope to meet their needs once again this year.” Thanks to a corporate partner who
