After more than a year of conducting research, gathering photos and reviewing home movies, filmmaker Michael Accorsi has released a film that celebrates the 100-year history of Italian-Americans who lived and worked in Hershey. “Gioia e Solideritá,” which translates to “Joy and Togetherness,” is a 20-minute production that illustrates real-life stories about Italians in Hershey, including their struggles and

Scouts will also continue to work on the Aviation Merit Badge at Fort Indiantown Gap. Troop 594 recently added three Eagle Scouts to the more than 50 already in its ranks. The new Eagles are Michael Astfalk Jr. from Bishop McDevitt High School, Caden Prisbe from Middletown Area High School, and Nathan Russo from Middletown Area High School. Four members of Troop 594 recently became Arrowmen members of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scouts of America’s honor society. Avery Askins, George Belfer, Ben Rine, and Aiden Ruzansky earned this honor by showing Scout spirit through avid participation in camping and troop activities. Also this year, the troop participated in both the Keystone Capital District’s Spring Camporee and the New Birth of Freedom Council’s Rendezvous Camp, which involved building a catapult for a camp-wide competition. celebrations. “The story of this Italian community is quite remarkable,” Accorsi said. “Like so many Italian communities, the values and strength of the community helped Italians persevere and achieve great accomplishments.” He added that the film was recently selected for the Venus Italian International Film Festival. Accorsi produces cinematic films as the owner of Accorsi Studios. His great-grandparents immigrated to the United States in 1914 and settled in Hershey along with many other Italians. “I just moved back to Hershey to spend time with my father and work on projects centering around the centennial for Italians here,” Accorsi noted. He explained that Italians first came to work in local quarries and later at the chocolate factory built by Milton Hershey. Accorsi noted that his father worked as a foreman in the chocolate factory. Accorsi collected old photos, many of which had to be touched up because they were damaged, and gathered home movies, some of which had to be converted for digital use.

The Hershey Rotary Club recently presented its annual Community Service Award to local Hershey business owners Phil and Kveta Guarno and Chuck and Sara Kray for their support of the community throughout the pandemic. The Guarnos, owners of Fenicci’s, Phillip Arthur’s, Uncle Filber’s, and Aunt K’s on Chocolate Avenue, foresaw issues in the food service industry when COVID19 began. Since local restaurants faced profound challenges and closures, the Guarnos found a way to help local restaurants and feed first-line responders at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. They created an online fundraising effort for people to contribute funds that allowed the Guarnos to request food from restaurants. The Guarnos would then pick the food up at those restaurants and deliver it to employees at the hospital. The community raised over $37,000 to help

local restaurants support the frontline workers. Early in the pandemic, the Krays, owners of the Hershey Pharmacy, recognized the impending need for COVID vaccines in the community. They procured vaccines and offered walk-in vaccination sites at both their pharmacy and at mass vaccination sites that were set up at The Her-

The Community Service Award is presented annually to a person or service organization whose volunteer public service, community outreach, philanthropic activities, or community activities repre-
sent an unselfish contribution to the communities of Derry Township or surrounding communities. Each recipient was presented with a certificate and a $500 donation from the Rotary Club of Hershey to a local charitable organization of their choosing. “Gioia e Solideritá,” which translates to “Joy and Togetherness,” is a film about Italian-Americans living and working in Hershey.
“I had to go through miles of personal family footage to create a story,” Accorsi said. “It is not a documentary. I just did an overarching summary. I interviewed older residents and got film footage from people who had it that came from several families in town. I wanted to have as much film as possible and accentuate it with photographs.” A live screening was held in July at the Swatara Train Station in Hershey, and Accorsi was able to watch people’s reactions as they viewed the film. “There are parts of the film that move pretty fast. I was worried about that, but (the viewers) liked the pace,” said Accorsi. “It was emotional. There were some tears.” He noted that the film’s message can be applicable to people of all backgrounds. “(Italians) were just a vibrant, happy, loving (people),” he
said. “To me, that is the thing that connects to anybody. (Everybody) would identify with that.” The film will be available to stream online for a nominal fee starting on Friday, Oct. 22. Visit www.italiansin hershey.com for more details. A screening will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Fenicci’s of Hershey, 102 W. Chocolate Ave., Hershey, and on Sunday, Dec. 19, at The Mill, 810 Old W. Chocolate Ave., Hershey. Both screenings will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets holders will be able to enjoy the film, appetizers and a glass of wine. Tickets are available on the previously mentioned website. Space is limited. For more information about the film or to learn about additional screening dates, visit www.facebook.com/italians inhersheyfilm.

Knights Of Columbus Council Holds Golf Fundraiser
Grand Knight Tom Szeltner (left) and event organizer Dave Wolfe welcomed golfers to the event.
Gretna Theatre Appoints New Executive Producer Gretna Theatre has appointed Michael Philip O’Brien as its executive producer following a national search. O’Brien replaces Brian Kurtas, who will transition to the newly created position of associate artistic director at Walnut Street Theatre. O’Brien comes to Gretna Theatre from 11th Hour Theatre Company in Philadelphia, where he was co-founder and producing artistic director since 2005. Under O’Brien’s leadership, 11th Hour Theatre Company garnered over 55 Barrymore nominations for excellence in Philadelphia theater, winning 15 awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical. Over his 16 years at 11th Hour, O’Brien produced multiple world premiere musicals and over 20 Philadelphia premieres, and developed more than 10 new musicals with writers from across the U.S. As a performer, O’Brien is a fivetime Barrymore Award nominee and a two-time winner for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Musical and Outstanding

Additional performing credits include Theatre Under the Stars, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Milwaukee Rep, Walnut Street Theatre, Arden Theatre Company, Delaware Theatre Company, and Bristol Riverside Theatre. Knights of Columbus Council 10502 from Church of the Holy Spirit in Palmyra held its 10th annual Spirit Scramble at Iron Valley Golf Course on Aug. 28. Despite a foggy start to the day, the event was sold out. Golfers not only had a morning on the links, but also lunch and the opportunity to bid on numerous silent auction items from various sports teams and individuals. The council uses the proceeds from the event not only for the church, but also for various community donations. Recently the council helped fund a service dog from Susquehanna Service Dogs for an individual in need, and the council also donated funds for wheelchairs for veterans.
