St. Edward’s Welcomes New Rector BY COURTNEY MENGEL

W hen the Rev. Dr. Richard Bauer graduated with a Bachelor of Science in legal studies from Nova Southeastern University, he knew he didn’t want to be a lawyer. While attending school, he was also building a career in music; some of his songs were on MTV and he opened for musicians such as Joan Jett. After a year went by, he applied to a graduate

LancasterHistory Takes On Digitizing Project BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Several museums and historical sites had to temporarily close their doors to the public as a result of the pandemic. One of them was LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. Within the past year, the organization used the closure as an opportunity to begin tackling several digitization projects it had wanted to complete for decades. In 2020, LancasterHistory went through the process of digitizing its entire James Buchanan collection, which consists of about 9,000 individual documents.

program in religious studies at Florida International University. Soon enough, the faculty trained Bauer as an adjunct professor. Despite his graduate research, Bauer was not attending church. Then he became interested in meditating and, while meditating, realized that Jesus was the basis of his faith. “I couldn’t shake it,” he said. While on a trip to the Holy Land, Bauer and his wife were watching the baptisms of pilgrims in the Jordan River. Bauer saw a man with a woman who had scars on her face, and the man filled a five-gallon jug with water from the river. “It was clear to me that this guy wanted to bring this big jug of healing water home with him on the plane, and that level of faith and hope that there’s a promise for healing struck me to my core,” noted Bauer. Suddenly, he knew what he was supposed to do with his life: ministry.

St. Edward’s Rector from pg 1 Camp Cadet Will Continue in that position in the beginning of 2020. Bauer said he believes he came to St. Edward’s at just the right time. As a musician, Bauer possesses audio and video knowledge. Without knowing just how important those skills would be, Bauer said St. Edward’s did well during the pandemic. “I got my Doctor of Ministry from Duke (Divinity School) in Christian leadership, so I was trained to adapt,” noted Bauer. “I’m looking most forward to building something good,” said Bauer. “I would like if we can respond to whatever need is before us with love and show people that no matter how alienating the world can feel, if you hang out here, you will feel like you’re in the presence of something holy. I would love if this place could become known for a home of faith seeking understanding so that you can come here and question everything.” St. Edward’s is located at 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Youths from all over Lancaster County have completed the Camp Cadet program. BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Since 1970, Camp Cadet of Lancaster County has provided youths ages 11 to 13 with an in-depth look at careers in law enforcement with the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp closed its doors for the summer. Trooper Kelly Osborne, director of the program, said she did not want to let another summer go by without Camp Cadet, so she improvised. From Monday, June 21, to Friday, Aug. 13, Camp Cadet will be held virtually. The program will be developed by and coordinated through the Pennsylvania State Police with the assistance of local police officers and state and local agencies that work with law enforcement. Over the course of these eight weeks, cadets will complete outdoor activities, community service, physical training, assignments, and quizzes. Throughout the program,

A woman who worked at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and School in Fort Lauderdale watched Bauer’s band play every Saturday night. She knew Bauer’s education and teaching background, so she asked Bauer to talk to her church leader. “This guy and I started talking theology and travel and hit it off,” stated Bauer. “He immediately asked me to join his staff.” While at St. Mark’s, Bauer led the music program, taught middle school religion, and directed youth group. When Bauer was getting ready to graduate with a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2018, a headhunter was looking for the top pick of Bauer’s graduating class. This person turned out to be Bauer. “In church, we talk about being ‘called,’ and I was literally called on the phone,” he said. That was how Bauer became an associate rector at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster. After having lunch with a member of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, Bauer applied and was interviewed for a position as rector at the church. He was installed

On Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m., Tenfold will hold a virtual celebration called “Unlocking Opportunity, Multiplying Our Impact.” The event will be hosted by Brian Roche of WGAL TV. According to Mike McKenna, CEO of Tenfold, the event will include a video that tells what Tenfold brings to the community through the experience of a client who benefited from services from what were once Tabor and LHOP. “We will also be talking about the future of this combined organization and sharing what that vision looks like,” said McKenna, who added that a silent auction and two musical performances will round out the hourlong presentation. “There’s a lot of great content, and we are going to keep it moving,” said McKenna. As the merger was happening, COVID-19 restrictions and the resulting impact on clients presented challenges for the organization. “The clients we were serving were really hard hit by the loss of income … which put a lot of households at greater risk of eviction,” said McKenna, who noted that although home-

St. Anne’s ’s Annual Chicken Barbecue & Bake Sale

The next phase of community engagement for Ewell Plaza began recently with a survey to gather input and inspiration for the façade artwork on the future parking garage and public library. This survey is the first step of additional community engagement opportunities taking place this spring and summer. Artists Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt will host listening sessions and workshops with the Lancaster community that, along with the survey, will inform the design concepts of the façade artwork. Members of the Lancaster community will have the opportunity to rank their favorite of at least two concept designs. The Lancaster Parking Authority has contracted Behar and Marquardt to create the façade artwork on its development in Ewell Plaza, which

will be affixed to the new Lancaster Public Library building. The City of Lancaster is facilitating the community engagement for this public art project. The artists are currently coordinating with the city to finalize dates and formats for the upcoming public participation. Readers may visit www.engage.cityoflancasterpa.com and click on the Ewell Plaza Art Explorations project to complete the survey. The survey will be open until Friday, May 14. Nearly two years ago, the public space on the east side of the 100 block of North Queen Street was renamed after Barney Ewell, an Olympian from Lancaster. To learn more about Ewell Plaza, the new home of the Lancaster Public Library, visit www.ewellplaza.com.

Art Walk To Feature Student Work The Arts at Millersville at the Ware Center will present works of art created by students from the School District of Lancaster during Art Walk, running from Friday, May 7, through Sunday, May 9. Although the building is not currently open to the public, the art will be visible through the windows on the Lyet Lobby at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The School District of Lancaster will exhibit artwork from selected students representing the elementary, middle, and high school art departments. For many years, district schools have been displaying student art works by students from kindergarten through grade 12 as part of Lancaster Art Walk, with

Millersville University’s Ware Center being the host in the most recent years. Due to the pandemic, an in-person show was not possible last spring, but some schools were able to host virtual shows. This year’s event marks a return to a physical art show. This exhibit will include a number of digital art projects that have been printed for the physical display, as well as physical art projects, much like the schools have exhibited in the past. To learn more about the art programs offered by School District of Lancaster, visit https://sdlancaster .org/discover-sdol/arts/visual-arts/. Knights Improve to 6-1 With Win Over Township

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Hempfield defeated Manheim Township in a Section One boys’ volleyball match at home on Thursday, April 22. The Knights won in three straight one-sided sets, posting scores of 25-9, 25-8 and 25-4. The victory raised Hempfield’s LL League record to 6-1. Ryan Givens delivered eight kills and registered four blocks for Hempfield. “Ryan Givens had nine swings with eight kills,” head coach Mike Vogel pointed out.

Caden Bonner makes a set for the Black Knights during their 3-0, Section One victory over visiting Manheim Township on April 29.

Dante Keener had six kills while Adam Gimenson added four kills. “Adam is a senior outside hitter,” Vogel said. “He wasn’t playing as much earlier in the year, but he is playing a lot more now.” Mason Orth, who finished with 16 digs, tied Michael Keene with three aces each. “Yes, we have a bunch of seniors on this team,” Vogel said. “But juniors like Mason Orth and Caden Bonner are doing well keep getting better each and every week.” Dan Luong and Eric Moldenhauser also contributed five digs each. The Knights spent Saturday at the State College Tournament. This year, the tourney was not as well attended. “There were four teams - a lot fewer than usual,” Vogel said. “We beat Seneca Valley in the finals. They are a really strong team out of District Seven and are normally in the state finals. They are a powerhouse from the Pittsburgh area.” Hempfield also defeated Central York and the host State College squad. “State College and Central York are both historically good teams,” Vogel added. For the tournament, Givens compiled 41 kills, hitting at a .400 percentage. Grant Lorelli added 25 kills.

“You don’t really have a lot of aces against quality opponents,” Vogel said. “Adam Gimenson had a really good day. He had three aces and eight kills.” Orth finished with 47 digs and Gimenson was second with 22. “Caden Bonner, who is our setter, led us in blocks with nine,” Vogel pointed out. “Givens had eight.” Grant Lorelli and Gerry Gallagher finished with five and four blocks, respectively. BASEBALL Ephrata’s scoring looked like a series of goose eggs with a 2 and a 1 as the bookends in Friday’s game at Landisville. The Mountaineers plated two runs in the opening frame and the decisive third run in the seventh inning. The Mounts’ pitching held Hempfield to two runs on only two hits as Luke Rotolo and Hunter Rowell worked the combined effort. The 3-2 loss dropped Hempfield’s record to 5-7 on the year. In another close game dominated by pitching, the Knights defeated Lampeter-Strasburg on the road Monday evening 2-1. It was Tim King and Austin Dunlap holding the Pioneers for six innings after the home team had inaugurated the scoring with a Braeden Karpathios RBI single. King recorded 12 strikeouts while allowing only two hits and two walks. Dunlap came in with two outs in the seventh to earn the save.

The Knights manufactured runs in the sixth inning after a single and a walk put runners on base and a passed ball moved them into scoring position. Cameron Berger ripped a single to drive in Conner Bitts and Caden Woods. Hempfield’s 18-2 crushing of Section One rival Penn Manor featured a six-run third inning and seven more in the sixth. In that third inning, Berger, Dunlap, Katch, Seitz, Woods, Gavin Constein and Christian LaBarbera each banged out a base hit. Luke Fiore, Marcus Rivera, and Bitts each had two-run singles in the seven-run sixth inning. Dunlap, the starting pitcher, was the recipient of the offensive support. He went five innings for the win. BOYS’ LACROSSE The Knights remained unbeaten (6-0) in league play with a dominant 21-2 victory at Cedar Crest on Thursday, April 22. They followed that victory with a 14-6 non-league win over Governor Mifflin two days later, improving to 9-0 overall. In the Crest game, the Knights scored nine of their goals in the first quarter - part of a match where they launched 45 shots. A total of 12 different players scored goals, including a five-goal game by Max Grube (3a) and four goals by Ryan Heuston. Ryan Hilton finished with two goals and two assists. Also scoring twice were Toby Marco and A.J. McAlpine. Matty Wiest played a strong game in goal with eight saves. Wiest had nine saves in the Mifflin match as the Knights outshot the Mustangs 22-15. Ryan Hilton and Jason Hilton each had hat tricks while Grube and Zack Antesberger each scored twice. Grube and McAlpine both recorded three assists. Marco, McAlpine, Caleb Young, and Stephen Pitts each netted one goal.

Gerry Gallagher bumps a Manheim Township serve during Hempfield’s 3-0, Section One win at home on April 29. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The Hempfield girls were involved in a tight battle with Governor Mifflin on Saturday, April 24. The Mustangs outscored the visitors 9-8 in the first half and held on for a 13-12 margin of victory. While Kelsea Dague and Kayla Brooks each recorded hat tricks, Brynn Axe also had a big day, scoring two and assisting three times. Whitney Hershey also scored twice while Kenna Price and Catherine Molitor each tallied one goal. Eryn Murphy recorded nine saves in the high-scoring match. In league play last Tuesday, Hempfield took control with an 112 first half advantage over Garden Spot. They settled for a 15-5 win behind Kayla Brooks’ five goal, one assist effort. Regan Gillisse (4), Dague (3), Brynn Axe (2g, 1a), Whitney Hershey (1g), and Makenzie Warfel (1a) also contributed. SOFTBALL With first place in Section One still within reach, the Hempfield softball team defeated Ephrata on the road Friday, April 23 and came up short at home against Lampeter-Strasburg in an 8-3 loss on Monday. With five league games remaining, the Knights (6-4) found themselves two games behind first place Penn Manor (8-2) Courtney Guthrie earned the victory at Ephrata, striking out nine batters in a complete game three-hitter. Hempfield blew a 3-0 lead against L-S in Monday’s loss. The Knights scored one in the first and two more in the third. The Pioneers finally got on the board in the sixth inning and went on to tie the game in the seventh before a five-run eighth inning spelled heartbreak for Hempfield. The Pioneers’ Keiva Middleton earned the win, recording 14 strikeouts. Guthrie took the loss, recording seven strikeouts and issuing six walks.

Chris Rivera slams a winner for the Black Knights during their 3-0, Section One victory over Manheim Township in Landisville on April 29.

The Knights suffered a tough 3-0 loss to Section One leader Penn Manor on Wednesday. The Comets improved to 13-2 overall as Bella Peters pitched five shutout innings and Aralyn Hoffert pitched the final two for the save. TENNIS Alexander Cooke’s comeback win at number three singles helped the tennis team earn a 32 non-league win at Cocalico on Friday, April 23. With each side at two team points, Cooke lost the first set to the Eagles’ Adam Wood 6-4. He responded with a 6-3 win in the second set and a 10-7 tiebreaker win. Earlier, the teams split the doubles matches as Eli Worley and Trent Meyers won the first doubles 6-4 6-2 whereas Hempfield teammates Jonah Comeaux and Gavin Chamberlain were on the short end of 64, 6-3 sets. Eric Jordan earned Hempfield’s other team point, taking the number one singles 6-4, 6-4. The Knights wrapped up the regular season with a 4-9 mark.

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drive-through chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that

will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wishconvoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.” People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl.com/ u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel

Breslin Selected For International Competition Haley Breslin, a student at the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy in Lancaster, has been chosen to participate in the Kiev Grand Prix Festival, a ballet competition in Ukraine. This competition has a longstanding reputation of including some of the world’s most talented ballerinas. Breslin is a junior at the Commonwealth Charter Academy. She will join other students from the United States in the competition, but she is the only student from Pennsylvania who will participate. Haley has been working toward this goal since September of last year. She dances six days a week and fits in extra lessons between school and her regular dance schedule. This will be the second time that Viktor Yeliohin, the ballet master of the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, will participate in the event, as he has been selected as one of the event’s many judges. Rotary french fry truck, Dutch Country Soft Pretzels, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches and Gene Wenger’s Meats’ hamburgers, along with baked goods and strawberry pies. Proceeds from the auction help cover tuition costs and pay for maintenance projects at the school. “We use the money toward offsetting the cost of private education so we can keep our tuition down,” Heisey explained, adding that in 2018 and 2019, the auction raised $110,000 each year, and she’d like to meet that goal this year. Last year’s auction was canceled due to the pandemic. “It’s great to be able to see other people and share the enthusiasm of the students and alumni who come back every year to see the exciting things we’re doing at Kraybill,” Heisey remarked. “It’s just a great community event.” For more information on the auction, including a schedule of events, visit www.kraybillauction.com.

“That process helped us figure out how to individualize projects and seek funding for digitizing pockets of our collection,” explained Robin Sarratt, vice president of LancasterHistory. Recently, LancasterHistory was awarded a Historical & Archival Records Care grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission to digitize its collections pertaining to the history of 19thcentury congressman Thaddeus Stevens, black residents of Lancaster, and indigenous people since the 18th century. LancasterHistory will use the $4,669 grant to provide online access to 138 items from the Thaddeus Stevens collection as well as 425 documents and manuscripts from 24 different historic collections pertaining to people of color in Lancaster County. The project will begin in August and is expected to be completed by May 2022. LancasterHistory will work with the Backstage Library Works of Bethlehem to digitize the materials, which will then be uploaded to LancasterHistory’s collections database at https:// collections.lancasterhistory.org. The database is free for public use. “There are a lot of underrepresented populations in our collection and collections in general across the United States, and although these records have been accessible to the public, we want to make them more widely accessible and bring them into light,” said Heather Tennies, director of archival services at LancasterHistory. Tennies explained that there is a burden on the researcher to locate these materials because they are difficult to find. Although these documents were accessible to the public before LancasterHis-

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the competition will be an entirely virtual event. Breslin will participate in three categories: a classical variation, a contemporary piece, and improvisation, which is a new category this year. She has already submitted her videos to the committee, and they will be judged at the beginning of May. Final judging will take place on Monday and Tuesday, May 10 and 11, and the contestants’ videos will be posted on the competition’s Facebook page, which may be found by searching for “Grand Prix Kyiv.” Winners will be announced on Wednesday, May 12, followed by a special ballet performance. Yeliohin welcomes all students to his studio. The academy will also host its own ballet competition, Relevé, in early November, with proceeds benefiting children’s health initiatives. More information may be found at www.vyballet.com and www.relevepa.org. Questions may be directed to Yeliohin at 717-419-6688 or relevedance org@gmail.com.
