EPC will celebrate 70th anniversary with community event

In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy, and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). As EPC celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at its facility at 1100 Corporate Blvd. in Lancaster.

Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Auntie Anne’s, Cupcakes

by Casey, Tri-County Barbecue and Homage. Guests may enjoy complimentary ice cream from Kreider Farms while supplies last.

Live entertainment will be provided by Blessing & Fowler from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Comprising musicians Zach Blessing and Nate Fowler, the duo performs soulful tunes and classic hits throughout central Pennsylvania. The event will also feature a live broadcast from WJTL from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and local mascots Johnny from Achenbach’s Pastries and Cylo from the Lancaster Stormers will make an appearance.

The open house will feature a variety of yard games and activities for children, including face painting and balloon twisting, and Cherry Hill Orchards will provide pumpkins for kids to decorate.

The 33rd annual Putt for Education mini golf fundraiser will take place on Friday, Oct. 4, at the Village Greens, 1444 Village Road, Strasburg. Proceeds from the event will benefit Junior Achievement of South Central PA (JASCPA), which is gearing up for another year of educational programs it offers in schools across

Lancaster County and the surrounding area.

Teams of four may sign up for one of three tee times, which will be 9:30 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m.

Twenty-four teams will begin golfing 24 holes at each tee time, and the team in each time slot with the best score will receive a trophy. Registration will include lunch and tickets for various prize drawings, which will feature gift baskets and items

The Friends of the Mountville Library will host its fall book sale on Friday, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 14, at Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville. The sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Free parking will be available in the church parking lot, and additional parking will be offered across the street at the Mountville Branch of the Lancaster Public Library if the church lot is full.

A variety of new and used

Guests may participate in several prize drawings during the open house, and prizes will include items and experiences donated by local businesses such as an espresso machine from Martin Appliances and a zip lining experience from Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. The prize drawing will also feature tickets to local attractions such as American Music Theatre, Field of Screams, Decades and Go ‘N Bananas.

Attendees will have an opportunity to look behind the scenes at EPC during a self-guided tour of the plant, which will offer a close-up look at each

department and how the company’s publications, including weekly newspapers, are made.

Multiple community organizations and local first responders will be present at the open house, including a firetruck from West Hempfield Fire & Rescue, an officer from East Hempfield Township Police Department and the Lancaster County 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Club. Representatives from local chambers of commerce serving Lancaster, including the Lancaster Chamber, the Mount Joy Area Chamber, the Southern Lancaster County Chamber and Northern Lancaster

County Chamber, will also be in attendance.

“In the third generation of this company, it’s important for us to continue the legacy of what was started,” said Jocelyn Engle, EPC’s publisher. “It’s all about supporting local organizations and understanding what serves our communities in each area.”

Quest for Learning Lancaster will hold its fall programs on Thursdays, Sept. 26 to Oct. 31, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster. Each week, 50-minute sessions will be offered at 9:40 and 11 a.m.

with a coffee and cookie break in between. All sessions and the refreshments are included in the program cost.

For more than 40 years, Quest for Learning has offered people of retirement age in the Lancaster community an opportunity to attend a series of seminars. Registration will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 27, while spaces are available. To register, visit www.jascpa.org/ putt-for-education.

Putt for Education

serves as JASCPA’s largest fundraiser of the year. The event not only helps the organization sustain the many programs it provides schools throughout the year, but it allows JASCPA to offer its programming at no cost to schools. Specific programs are offered at different grade levels, but each

activity falls under one of three educational pillars: financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. “Our main goal is to give students a taste of all the different things out there in the world,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “We want them to realize not every pathway you go down requires a four-year degree. There’s a lot of options available, and you can find a really exciting job.”

One of JASCPA’s many programs is Your Economic Success! (YES!), a half-day

educational event. The next installment will take place at Centerville Middle School on Wednesday, Sept. 18. YES! is designed to familiarize seventh- and eighth-graders with the financial decisions and career choices they will face as working adults, and it incorporates activities such as budget balancing, working as a team and building a resume. JASCPA will also host a STEM Summit at Hempfield High School on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and Thursday, Nov. 7.

REAL Life, a pro -

gram JASCPA offers for 11th-graders, will be held at Penn Manor High School on Thursday, Oct. 24, and Friday, Oct. 25. The program entails a full school day of educational activities that will help prepare students for job interviews, managing finances and maintaining a personal brand on social media.

REAL Life will also take place at Lampeter-Strasburg High School on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, and the school will host a STEM Summit for its freshmen on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025.

Every year, JASCPA serves more than 30,000 students in Lancaster County with its programs, which require more than 9,000 volunteers to operate. Volunteer opportunities in nearly every school district in the county are available online at www .jascpa.org.

“We want to make sure students are prepared to

books will be available to purchase during the event. Patrons may browse several categories of books, including books for different reading levels and children of any age as well as a large collection of books about the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team and other sports. Other books will feature topics such as genealogy or knitting techniques, and a specially priced collection of books copyrighted between 2021 and 2024 will be available to purchase. “We have lots and lots and lots of books; if you name it, we probably have it,” said Karen Denlinger, president of the board for the Friends of the Mountville

Library.

All books included in the sale have been donated by members of the community. Denlinger said the fall book sale often features books and educational materials that have been donated by retired educators over the summer.

“We have the best patrons of all. They come every year to support everything we do,” Denlinger said. “People travel all the way from Honey Brook for the book sale, and every year we get more and more people who come to our plant sale in the spring.” The proceeds of the book sale will directly support the Mountville Branch of the Lancaster Public Library,
