Lancaster County Garden Club to hold 90th anniversary banquet

The Lancaster County Garden Club will hold a banquet to celebrate its 90th anniversary at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Willows at Historic Strasburg, 1500 Drive, Strasburg. The event will include an educational presentation from garden writer and historian Kirk Brown, door prizes, a buffet-style dinner and a vote to elect the club’s officers.

The banquet will begin with a social and cash bar, and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Meal options will include salad, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, chicken breast, homemade stuffing, crusted haddock and vegetarian lasagna. Dessert and beverages will include apple crisp, cookies, coffee, hot tea, lemonade and special cupcakes made to celebrate the

90th anniversary.

During the presentation, “Muhlenberg Recreating Eden,” Brown will portray botanist and preacher Henry Muhlenberg to highlight his life and work. Muhlenberg served as the pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Lancaster city from 1780 to 1815, and he became the first president of Franklin & Marshall College, which was called Franklin College at the time. Brown will explore Muhlenberg’s prolific research and catalog of local flora and fauna through a first-person account.

Although Lancaster County Garden Club’s membership includes avid horticulturists and plant enthusiasts from across the county, the group holds its regular meetings at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Meetings take place on the second Monday of every

According to Circle Legacy Center’s mission statement, the nonprofit’s goal is “to represent Native America to our local businesses, organizations and educational institutions, both the enduring traditions of the past as well as their thriving and challenging contemporary culture.”

Despite having no official headquarters, Circle Legacy Center strives to bridge the gap between the Native American community

and the public by partnering with local organizations, attending events and offering monthly programs in downtown Lancaster. Circle Legacy Center will host its next Second Friday program from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. The event will feature a performance from Barry Lee of the Native American music group Spirit Wing. Lee will sing and use a water drum to play traditional music from the Eastern

Woodland Tribes, and he will give a talk about what Thanksgiving Day means to Native Americans. Lee will also explain the meaning of the songs and offer interactive demonstrations of Native American dancing.

“With November being Native American History Month, we wanted to do something festive,” said Victoria Valentine of Millersville, who founded Circle Legacy Center in 2007. “A lot of our programs can get pretty deep and upsetting when talking

about Native American history, so we wanted to make this program about music, dancing and having fun.”

Circle Legacy Center’s Second Friday programs highlight a variety of topics related to Native American culture, history and challenges that Indigenous tribes face in modern times. In the past, the series has explored historical events and discussed movements such as Every Child Matters, which seeks to raise awareness of the treatment of Native American children in residential schools.

This year, Circle Legacy Center partnered with Franklin & Marshall College to assist with Reckoning with Lancaster, a project supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that aims to shed light on Lancaster’s complex history and relationship to local Native American communities. Through the partnership, members of Circle Legacy Center such as Lee and board president MaryAnn Robins teach classes about Native American culture at Franklin & Marshall College.

In addition to its educational programs and partnerships, Circle Legacy Center frequently participates in community events held by organizations such as the Conestoga Area Historical Society, Blue Rock Heritage Center and Mennonite Life. Members of Circle Legacy Center typically attend events such as Washington Boro Heritage Day and Maize and Snitz Fest to offer demonstrations of Native American traditions and crafts.

Circle Legacy Center’s Second Friday programs will continue with an arts and crafts event in December and a movie night in January.

Sunday show at 5 p.m.

All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Restart Training Center, a faith-based residential program for men who are recovering from addiction.

“Baggage Claim” is a modern-day parable about the D’Baquel family and their vacation gone awry. The family’s members encounter a slew of mishaps and wacky encounters during their stay at a comically chaotic bed-andbreakfast, including the bellhop repeatedly tossing the D’Baquels’ luggage off a cliff. Although the play invites audience members to laugh at its absurdity, the tone gradually becomes more serious as the story explores the personal struggles of each family member. “The show has a good, strong message about giving up your burdens,” said the play’s director, Dorothy Smith. “And who can take your burdens but Jesus?”

Smith, who has actively been involved with the Promise Players as an actor and director for about 12 years, said the theater group performed “Baggage Claim” several years ago. The first show was well received by audiences, and Smith was a member of the cast. “I’ve really enjoyed both being on and off stage over the years,” Smith added. “It’s a really friendly and loving atmosphere to work in.”

Although the Promise Players is based in Strasburg and typically hosts shows at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, its cast and crew comprises members of churches located in other parts of the county. Smith lives in Landisville, and she attends church in East Petersburg. “Our cast comes from a wide variety of backgrounds,” Smith said. “There are a lot of different churches represented with us, but it feels really good to be able to find common ground where you come into agreement about what’s important to tell our audience.”

month at 7 p.m., and each meeting features a topic related to horticulture. During meetings, members display items such as floral arrangements, potted plants and paintings of garden landscapes, club’s leadership provides updates on upcoming field trips and garden tours. Each meeting includes a presentation from a guest speaker centered around the theme of the month.

In addition to the resources available to the Lancaster County Garden Club’s members and visitors from the community, the organization’s monthly meetings and special events provide a space for participants to learn from other gardeners and exchange techniques and tips. Manor Township resident Ruth Davis, who joined the club 25 years ago and currently serves as its president, said that the camaraderie between members is her favorite aspect of the Lancaster County Garden Club. “We share a wealth of knowledge, but I enjoy making friends, talking and visiting their gardens,” Ruth added.

Ruth’s husband, Bob Davis, coordinates the Lancaster County Garden Club’s programs and annual events, including an annual banquet and a corn roast every August. Ruth and Bob share a love of conifers and trees, and

“We have a bit of an arboretum,” Bob said.

The Lancaster County Garden Club was started by a group of businessmen who enjoyed growing roses, and it was known as the Men’s Garden Club until 2009. Since 1951, the club’s members have tended the rose garden in Buchanan Park - a scenic location that former mayor Rick Gray referred to as the most beautiful place in Lancaster city.

Volunteer readers sought for Ag Literacy Week

The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is seeking volunteer readers for its ninth annual Ag Literacy Week, which is set to occur from Monday to Friday, March 17 to 21. Volunteers from communities across the state will visit classrooms and other student groups to read the book “The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” and talk about local farming.

Ag Literacy Week connects volunteers from the agricultural community to local classrooms to share the story of agriculture. Readers have the opportunity to talk about farming and agriculture through the book they read as well as sharing their own story about farming, agriculture programs they are involved with, or their connections to agriculture. After each reading event, volunteers donate a copy of the book and educational activities to the classroom to be used throughout the year and with future classes. More than 2,000 copies of the book will be presented in classrooms in Pennsylvania this year.

“The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” explores the joys of planting a garden, nurturing and harvesting food, and recycling scraps to compost, ensuring that the cycle of growth and sustainability continues. Scientific facts about soil, plants, pollinators, decomposers, and more are included on every spread. The book encourages young readers to become environmental stewards, learn how to care for a garden, understand a plant life cycle, and discover the power of pollinators and the importance of composting.

To register as a volunteer reader by Friday, Dec. 13, or to learn more, visit www.pfbfriends.com/ ag-literacy-week/.

The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is a charitable organization supported by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. The foundation has been educating the public and promoting agriculture since its inception in 1986. To learn more about foundation programs, go to www.pfbfriends.com.

Class members gather for reunion

The reunion attendees were (from left) Kenneth Miller, Phyllis Dougherty, Jeanie Robertson, Arlene Gingrich, Martha Gingrich, Helen Swarr and Richard Bachman.

Seven members of the Hempfield Class of 1949 gathered on Oct. 24 for a 75-year anniversary luncheon in the board room of Hempfield’s administration building, which was once their high school. The “Forty-Niners” shared memories and stories from their time at East Hemp -

field Township High School, which is now the administration building. Some of them went on a tour of the building.

The classmates present at the reunion were Richard Bachman, Phyllis Dougherty, Arlene Gingrich, Martha Gingrich, Kenneth Miller, Jeanie Robertson and Helen Swarr. The Class of 1949 had 39 members, and eight are still living.

Holiday craft bazaar posted

Lancaster Church of the Brethren will host its annual holiday craft bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church’s worship and events center. Shoppers can get an early start on Christmas shopping for teachers, friends and family or just treat themselves to something special.

Food and drinks will be available for breakfast and lunch. Proceeds from kitchen food sales, prize giveaways and vendor registration fees will benefit the Lancaster County Food Hub.

This year’s bazaar has more vendors than before and will offer a variety of handmade items, including floral paintings, handcrafted greeting cards, fabric handcrafts, miscellaneous kitchen items like

towels and scrubbies, and table linens. Also offered for sale will be Christmas items, including ornaments and holiday decorations; home décor such as wooden items and Scentsy warmers; homemade soaps; jewelry; and handcrafted products from artisans worldwide. There will also be a large selection of hand-woven, knitted and crocheted items, including clothing, fashion accessories, baskets, and critters, as well as artisan breads and baked goods.

While parents shop, children can make their own crafts at the children’s make-and-take craft table.

Lancaster Church of the Brethren is located at 1601 Sunset Ave., near the Lancaster Shopping Center. Parking is free.

Management workshop planned

Penn State Extension will offer a webinar, “Managing for Trust,” on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 1 to 2 p.m. Attendees will learn to identify communication behaviors that erode trust, gain practical strategies for building and maintaining trust, and explore the key elements of being a trust-

worthy leader. Participants will also discover how trust-based strategic thinking can elevate team collaboration and get actionable tips on addressing team challenges with empathy and appreciation. The event is free of charge. Registration is required by visiting https://extension .psu.edu/ and searching for “Essential Skills: Managing for Trust.”
