Rotary Club project supports expecting mothers

The Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club recently partnered with nonprofit organization Parish Resource Center to support expecting mothers in the local region. On Sept. 25, volunteers from the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club assembled 92 kits of items for infants at Parish Resource Center’s facility, located at 2160 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The kits will be distributed to expecting mothers through Union Community Care, a medical provider that offers prenatal services at a variable cost depending on clients’ budgets. In the first phase of the project,

the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club received a list from Parish Resource Center of the items needed for the baby kits. Each kit includes a diaper bag, diapers, sanitary wipes, a nasal aspirator, a blanket and clothing items such as onesies, sleepers and hats.

“The baby kits are a good starter package to make sure new mothers have what they need.”

The Rotary Foundation helped fund the purchase of the baby kit items through the Rotary District 7390 Grant Program, matching the contributions of the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club.

The project was proposed by one of the Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club’s members who discovered Parish Resource Center’s community outreach initiatives. The club decided to pursue the partnership

GOTR Lancaster is in the process of putting the wraps on another fall season. If participation and impact are any indications, the current season has been an overwhelming success.

“Girls participate in our program for every reason

imaginable,” said Jennifer West, co-founder of GOTR Lancaster.

“They stick with it because it’s fun. Our program is a developmental program that focuses on the whole girl. The girls learn about who they are and how to make good choices. They learn how to be good friends and how to choose good friends.”

GOTR Lancaster will conclude its 10-week fall season on Sunday, Nov. 24, at Millersville University’s Pucillo Field,

“It’s a day when girls, coaches and family members come out and celebrate the accomplishments of these 10 weeks,” said Jessica Wilson, GOTR Lancaster’s program and 5K fun run manager. “There are a lot of cheer groups along the course, and it just makes it a really special day for the girls. Sometimes they’re running with their coaches, and sometimes they’re running with family members. The finish line is just a magical place. It’s emotional for all of us to watch them achieve their accomplishments.”

During the fall season, which began on Sept. 16, 650 girls in grades three through eight from all over Lancaster County and parts of Lebanon County participated in the GOTR Lancaster program. The GOTR program is designed for girls in third through fifth

grades, while girls in sixth through eighth grades participate in Heart and Sole.

The 43 teams of participants, supported by more than 200 volunteer coaches, met twice a week within the boundaries of every Lancaster County public school district, at some county private schools and in the Lebanon city, Cornwall-Lebanon, Eastern Lebanon County and Annville-Cleona school districts in Lebanon County. The meetings consisted of some sort of physical activity, including running; social and emotional curriculum; and varying forms of support.

“We have girls from all walks of life who have experienced all types of things at this point of life,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “For these girls, now is when they’re really trying

to understand themselves and how they fit into this world. Participating in Girls on the Run gives them the foundations to build strong relationships and life skills, not just for now, but into the future. We want girls to participate in any way they’re comfortable. There is research that suggests that a combination of physical activity and emotional support is the best way to help the whole person.”

An international program, GOTR was founded in Lancaster in 2009, with two teams and 25 girls.

GOTR Lancaster expanded into Lebanon County in 2017, and to date the program has been used 22,000 times by about 12,000 girls.

“We thought this was something Lancaster was ready for,” said West. “We grew quickly. We were just seeing as many girls as

Sacred Heart School plans celebration

Sacred Heart School, 235 Nevin St., Lancaster, will hold a celebration honoring the 114-year legacy of the Sisters, Servants of the

Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), whose service, dedication, and faith have shaped the school’s history and community. The event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17, beginning with a 10:30 a.m. Mass led by Bishop Timothy Senior.

Following the Mass, the school will hold a dedication and blessing of a commemorative bronze plaque, which will be permanently displayed near the front entrance of the school. The plaque will serve as a tribute to the sisters’ enduring influence and contributions to the spiritual and educational foundation of the school.

Seventeen Sisters from the IHM community are scheduled to attend. All

community members are welcome to join in the celebration, which will honor not only the legacy of the IHM sisters, but also their ongoing impact on students, families, and staff members. possible. Now, we’re going deeper and finding out where we’re not reaching. The participants are really learning how to be part of a larger community.”

Registration for GOTR’s spring 2025 season will open on Friday, Feb. 7, and the 10-week session will commence during the week of March 10.

“It’s so essential to be able to offer short-term housing for people with nowhere to go,” said GSS’ marketing and communications manager, Rachel Shelley. “Lancaster city is one of the most densely populated areas of families that we serve, and we’re happy to be able to take this first step to helping more people in need.”

After the ceremony, attendees were invited to tour the new residential facility. GSS had been using the building as an office space since 2017, and it served as a place for case managers to provide preventative services and meet with families at risk of eviction. The building was frequently empty between meetings, and GSS began thinking of ways it could better utilize the space. The organization began moving its offices out of the facility in October 2023, and the building was renovated to support transitional housing.

With the renovation and official opening of the North Lime Street building, GSS now offers shortterm housing at all five of its locations, which include facilities in Phoenixville, Coatesville, Kennett Square and Ephrata. The Lancaster city location will provide safe housing for up to eight people in addition to case management services and resources. Although the facility will only serve single mothers and children for

the time being, GSS plans to expand its services to assist all demographics over the next 10 years.

Another factor in GSS’ decision to offer housing in Lancaster city is the convenience and accessibility it offers residents. Clients who stay at the facility are closer to child care, have more job opportunities nearby and can easily access public transportation.

“It’s a rich opportunity for people to access resources in the city that we haven’t been able to offer before,” Shelley said.

Although the North Lime Street location has officially opened its doors, GSS still hopes to complete two addition projects to add a laundry room and renovate a patio on the second level of the building. Shelley said the organization is seeking partnerships with businesses and other nonprofits, as well as volunteers to assist with the projects. “We would love to welcome people for tours to learn more,” added Shelley.

Groundbreaking launches construction of The Townstead Apartments

Future residents and guests gathered on Sept. 18 for a ceremony to mark the celebration of the groundbreaking for The Townstead Apartments. The new development is another step in the master campus plan for strategic growth at Homestead Village, promising another campus living option for residents.

Douglas Motter, president of Homestead Village; members of the board of directors and the Homestead Village Leadership Team; and representatives from Warfel Construction and RLPS joined in the celebration.

Set to open in spring 2026, the 73-apartment building will offer modern, comfortable living spaces and amenities.

The groundbreaking ceremony commenced with a blessing from Homestead Village chaplain Wayne Cooley. Skip Zeiders, a Homestead Village resident who also serves on the Homestead board of direc-

tors and other resident council committees, welcomed guests with words about why Homestead Village is so special.

Additionally, Donald Stalnecker of Warfel Construction and Dustin Julius of RLPS recounted all the careful planning and dedication that have gone into the project. Plus, they updated guests on the renovations happening around the community, including the brand-new café that opened in late August and the coffee shop and salon coming soon. The ceremony concluded with remarks by Motter and a photo session with attendees breaking ground wearing hard hats and shovels.

With over 60% of the apartments reserved, future residents are looking forward to making their selections and customiza -

tions for their apartments.

Technology such as Warfel’s Virtual Design Modeler will help in the selections process by allowing future residents to easily see and try various color combinations of cabinetry, paint, flooring, countertops, backsplash and other finishes to virtually create their future spaces. Each incoming resident will also have a personal meeting in the design studio to finalize selections in person.

As soon as they reserve, future Townstead residents are invited to participate in choice campus activities and events and even trips such as a “Yuletide Finery in Newport Rhode Island” excursion this winter.

Homestead Village will also offer to bring personal care services to individual apartments if needed in the future. This is a forward-thinking plan to meet

residents’ needs without having to require a physical move to a personal care building in a separate location. This is also a plan for couples that wish to reside together even if personal care is needed down the road. Additionally, all the amenities, services and continuum of care households are under the same roof as The Townstead, allowing ease of access for all.

An open house to learn more about Homestead Village and The Townstead Apartments was held on Oct. 19 at the Bachman Center at Homestead Village in conjunction with the Explore Retirement Living open house event. For those interested in joining the community or to secure a spot in The Townstead Apartments, visit www.homesteadvillage.org for more information.

Meeting to feature program on Corrie ten Boom

The Susquehanna Valley Community Connection (SVCC) will hold a gathering with the theme “Christmas With Corrie ten Boom” on Sunday, Dec. 1, at Casa di Fiori at The Inn at Leola Village, 38 Deborah Drive, Leola.

Gayle Haas will present

a costumed dramatization of Corrie ten Boom, a Holocaust survivor who, with the Dutch Resistance, helped Jewish people escape the Nazis in World War II. Haas’ presentation is titled, “Do You Wonder Why?” Music will be provided by Perfect Harmony.

Beverages will be available at 1 p.m., with lunch at 1:30 p.m.

There is a fee to attend, and reservations are due by Saturday, Nov. 16. For information on how to register, call 717-799-0088. Cancellations must also be made by Nov. 16.

Participating in the groundbreaking were (from left) Kathy Mincin, CFO; Joel Clausen, vice president of resident services; Jeremiah Tucker, director of facilities; Douglas Motter, president; Christina Gallagher, director of marketing; and Skip Zeiders, Homestead Village resident and a member of the board of directors.
