Another Year, Another Fair BY COURTNEY MENGEL
ummer months are great, but late September in Lancaster County is something special because it’s fair season. After a year where a number of events were canceled or adjusted, it was no surprise that many people were delighted that the West Lampeter Fair returned for its 97th year. The three-day event from Wednesday,
S
Sept. 22, to Friday, Sept. 24, attracted hundreds of attendees. Some came for the food, some came for the tractor and baby parades, some came for the animals, and some came for all of it. Festivities began at noon on the first day of the fair. Many activities occurred, such as a children’s petting zoo, a tractor parade, and the West Lampeter Fair Queen Contest. Formerly known as the Livestock
Several tractors were involved in the tractor parade and tractor games.
Queen Contest, the West Lampeter Fair Queen Contest has been a tradition since 1958. This year’s 10 candidates each represented a club, sport, or extracurricular activity and met individually with the fair queen committee before the contest. This year’s West Lampeter Fair queen is Brooke Smith, representing the National Honor Society. Smith and the fair queen alternate, Gracie Albright, representing the FFA, received scholarships and cash prizes for themselves and their sponsoring organizations. Smith will also represent the West Lampeter Community Fair at the PA State Fair Queen Competition in January 2022. The second day of the fair saw tractor games, the baby parade, and a concert with music provided by the Lampeter-Strasburg High School marching band. On the last day of the fair, there was an allWestern horse show and a calf roping contest, and the winners of the Youth Encouragement Awards were named.

In 1921, the communities of Lampeter, Refton, New Danville, and West Willow founded the Big Four Fire Company with the intent of raising funds to purchase four identical Ford model HT chemical trucks. Organized by temporary chairman Benjerman Herr, a meeting was held at Lampeter-Strasburg High School to launch the effort. Over the next several months, See Fire Company pg 2

funds were raised through donations and pledges, with the proceeds going toward purchasing the brand-new fire equipment. The new apparatuses arrived in Lancaster on April 1, 1921, and were officially given to the Big Four on April 7. As time progressed, the individual fire companies continued to grow, so it was decided on February 27, 1929, that the Big Four be disbanded and each fire company become its own entity. That run ended with a 5-0 loss to Manheim Township (11-0) last Wednesday. Ryan and Kylie Gerhardt, Laura Leaman and Lindsey Steele and Maddie Snyder and Katie Finn all posted 8-1 victories over Solanco. Ryan Gerhardt went on to post a shutout at No. 1 singles while K. Gerhardt, Leaman and Steele provided the sweep with 6-1, 6-1 wins at No. 2 through 4, respectively. Cocalico proved to be more of a challenge. The Gerhardt’s’ won 8-4 while Leaman and Snyder won 8-3. Cocalico took the third doubles for their only point in the match. R. Gerhardt, K. Gerhardt, Leaman and Snyder all won in straight sets. Leaman worked the tightest match of the day, winning 7-6, 6-3. L-S held a 3-2 lead over the Bears with one quarter left but couldn’t deny the hosts who got a pair of goals from Regan Flory, including the game-winner. Marissa Rice put L-S on the board in the first while Rowan Kimmel and Maggie Swarr scored third quarter goals. Brooke Zuber recorded nine saves. Against the Barons, both teams found the back of the net in the second and fourth quarters but needed OT to determine the outcome. Rice and Ally Raub were the goal scorers with Tori Heiserman adding two assists. The Mounts slowly gained momentum, taking advantage of Pioneer miscues to forge ahead 3-1. Two strokes and a handful of cards made for an interesting game. Zuber did deny one of those strokes. “We have juniors and seniors on the field that are rather inexperienced with varsity play,” said Swarr. “We have to take care of things like catching the ball, receiving inserts and getting our feet out of the way and then look to make the magic happen.” For more photos see townlively.com. senior quarterback Berkeley Wagner rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns and threw for two more scores as the Pioneers ran away with a 42-2 victory, their fourth straight. L-S scored on its first possession, a Wagner one-yard keeper that capped a nine-play drive. In the second quarter, Jonathan Mellinger returned an interception 23 yards for a 14-0 lead. The Vikings followed with a safety, but the visitors shrugged that off when Wagner found Austin Cole with a 27-yard scoring strike to push the lead to 28-2 at the break. Wagner completed 9-of-11 passes, with Drexton Frank hauling in five, for 155 yards and rushed for another 126 to pace the offense. Carson Coleman added 48 rushing yards and Hildenbrand chipped in with 35. Mellinger scored on a four-yard TD run early in the third and Wagner raced from 32-yards out to cap the scoring. Defensively, Julian Lopez and Jackson Heeter both recorded seven solo tackles.

T-shirts will be available while supplies last. The CommUNITY 5K is the main fundraiser for the Lampeter-Strasburg Homes of Hope program. Homes of Hope is a transitional housing ministry of Love INC of Lancaster County, where homeless families are supported through the collective efforts of churches in the families’ school district. While families are enrolled in the program, they meet with budget coaches and mentors on a weekly basis to help them achieve the goals that are set for them. The overall goal is for each family to move out of Homes of Hope’s property and find affordable, permanent housing, with
increased skills to budget and remain successful. “We have successfully had three families go through the program, and they are now living independently on their own in permanent housing,” stated Karen Bender with the Lampeter-Strasburg Homes of Hope program. This will be the second year that the CommUNITY 5K will partner with the Strasburg Ministerium to combine the race and Strasburg Day, which will also take place at Strasburg Jaycee Park on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a free chicken barbecue meal, a cornhole tournament, children’s activities, face painting, a bounce house, and performances by Piercing Word. For the first time, on Sunday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m., six local churches will

Eradicating Hunger One Step At A Time The Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP) was created in 1947 when farmers were asked to donate food and seed crops to Europe and Asia after World War II. Twenty-two years later, the inaugural CROP Hunger Walk was organized in Bismarck, N.D., and in York, Pa., the year after. Since then, CROP Hunger Walk events have been held in hundreds of communities nationwide, raising money to eradicate hunger and poverty. Representatives from Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, Refton Brethren in Christ Church, and Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren have collaborated for the past 31 years to host the annual Solanco CROP Hunger Walk. Since its inception in 1980, the event has raised over $401,000. All of the proceeds go to Church World

Mary Etta Reinhart and Don Trimble, cochairs of the Solanco CROP Walk, selected the food bank run by Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) as the recipient. Through the CROP Walk, participants endeavor to help eradicate hunger on both global and local scales. This year’s Solanco CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road, Holtwood. Walkers will gather at 8:30 a.m., with the 5-mile walk beginning at 9 a.m. Masks will be optional, and the event will be held rain or shine. “The park is such a beautiful place to walk,” stated Reinhart. “Usually, the trees are changing and I see deer almost every
