A Musical Performance From Martin Meylin Middle School BY COURTNEY MENGEL
fter going without a musical last year due to the pandemic, drama students at Martin Meylin Middle School (MMMS) are excited to return to the stage to perform “Adventures of a Comic Book Artist.” “Adventures of a Comic Book Artist” is a timeless hero-versus-villain story. Sydney Leonardo Sappovitz is a janitor for Miss Wunderman at Wonder Comics and has dreams of becoming a comic book artist. Sydney’s passion for art may not come as a surprise considering her mother named her after Leonardo da Vinci. Out of a need to bring something new to the comic book industry, Miss Wunderman orders powerful Peloponnesian pens that make drawings come to life. Chaos ensues after artists from Wonder Comics draw to life Doctor Shock Clock, who turns out to be a villain. After Doctor Shock Clock takes Miss Wunderman away and no one can find them, Viola, Miss Wunderman’s secretary, gives one of the magical pens to Sydney. From her creative mind and onto paper, Sydney draws

four heroes who she hopes can save the day: Star Guy, Triple Time, Blossom, and Wombat Woman. Ten students were assigned significant roles in the musical, with Ludanine Lozada as Sydney Leonardo Sappovitz, Trenton Breneman as Star Guy, Ashlyn Donaldson as Triple Time, Maria Glick as Miss Wunderman, Mia LaFontaine as Wombat Woman, Audrey Wieand as Viola, Leiana Smathers as Blossom, Isaac Staley as Doctor Shock Clock, and Shanasia Shreiner and Julianna Fry as the two narrators. The rest of the cast consists of Maddy Albright, Remy Colosi, Anabelle DeGroft, Norah Ditzler, Hope Fiorello, Quinn Flory, Jaleigh Gore, Auburn Heinly, Isabel Henry, Madelyn Herr, Sean Hess, Eva Hirschmann, Jack Hohenwarter, Noah Holland, Kendall Hoover, Joana Lagunas, Mya Matos, Kayleigh Oberdorf, Finlee Parrish, Alexis Perez, Emily Reiter, Hannah Reiter, Alyson Rhoades, Elsie Kate Rohrer, Amara Russell, Katie Sanborn, Emily Simpson, Leah Steffy, Norah Steffy, Natalie Turner, Madison Wennerholt, Frankie Yarnell, and Peyton Zander. This production will be the 11th
show that Memory D’Agostino has directed. David Griffith will serve as assistant director. “We’ve seen so much growth in the cast from the beginning,” stated D’Agostino. “It’s just really exciting for me. Even though this is my 11th show, I still love to watch where they are, where they start, and where they end up by the time we
get to showtime. And I love to watch them when they get to high school. (For David and me), it’s like our proud mom and dad moment.” Live performances of “Adventures of a Comic Book Artist” will run Thursday, Dec. 2, to Saturday, Dec. 4, with shows beginning at 7 p.m. in the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Performing Arts Center auditorium,

As part of this mission, the WSUCC Preschool has traditionally hosted a breakfast with Santa event. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the breakfast was replaced with a Santa drivethrough last year. As some restrictions are still in place, the church has decided to bring back the Santa drivethrough again this year. The second annual Santa drive-through will take place on Friday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at WSUCC, 2723 N. Willow Street Pike, Willow Street. Families that attend can meet Santa, who will bring his sleigh. While there, children may write their Christmas letters and mail them in the North Pole mailbox at the church. Santa will write back to children who leave their address on the letter. Photos will be permitted, and each child will receive a goodie bag as well as a makeand-take craft. “We can’t wait to see Santa again and help him to spread some hope and joy for the
Christmas season!” exclaimed Susan Myers, chairman of the Preschool Board at WSUCC. There is an admission fee per vehicle, and the proceeds from the event will go to the WSUCC Preschool, which provides scholarships for students in need of financial assistance. “ With COVID, our nonprofit preschool has taken a large financial loss with a decrease in enrollment and staff shortages,” noted Myers. Those unable to attend the Santa drive-through are still able to take part in the festivities. Children can mail their Christmas letters and a set fee to Santa through the WSUCC Preschool. For more information, including the mailing address for letters and the monetary amount to include, contact Lauren Maffett, director of Willow Street UCC Preschool, by calling 717-464-0720 or emailing wsuccpreschool@gmail.com. Ballet from pg 1 “I can’t imagine my life without being a dancer,” said Elizabeth. “I’m just very grateful to have this experience. I’ve been working up to this part, and it’s great to finally be the person doing it.” At school, Elizabeth is the vice president of the Student Council, the president of the STEM Club, and a member of the National Honor Society, Asian Cultures Club, and Spanish Club. She also volunteers at Lancaster Science Factory. LSHS freshman Gianna Fasano, the daughter of Amy and John Fasano, has been dancing in “The nutcracker” for eight years. Gianna will join Elizabeth en pointe in the snow scene and the waltz
scene, and she will dance in the Russian scene. “I’ve always wanted to dance at Viktor’s studio, and it was one of my greatest decisions because he helps me appreciate dance, the arts, and music,” stated Gianna. “I just love dancing.” At school, Gianna plays the flute in the marching band and is a member of the Pioneer Interact Club. She also has a deep interest in art. “I’m looking forward to a live audience again,” noted Elizabeth. “It’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit and support the arts.” For information about purchasing tickets, visit http:// vyballet.com/performances /nutcracker.

More than two years ago, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales went to sleep one night and dreamed of a ballet. “(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,” said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down everything she could remember. She brought the ballet to Connie Dienner, director at Cavod Academy of the Arts. The result was “Wonder,” an original Christmas ballet, which was performed for the first time in Cavod Theatre in 2019. The story is suitable for family members of all ages. “Wonder,” choreographed and directed by Morales and featuring a cast of 37, will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Hol-

Morales made a few changes in this year’s production. “We will have an icicle battle scene,” she said. “I really wanted to focus on the juxtaposition between the lights, Sierra Hurst will play Gracie.

Weston Weaver (9 tackles) and Hunter Hildebrand (7 takedowns) joined Malatesta with interceptions as the Rams turned the ball over five times. Luke Hines and Jackson Heeter also combined for 14 tackles for a dominating defensive effort. “Beau had a great game,” said Ridenour. “He was all over the place making tackles. An 11-game winning streak and a trip to the District Three 4A final was on the line Friday, November 12 when Lampeter-Strasburg hosted Kennard-Dale in the district semis. Experience, however, favored the Pioneers who set the tone early and cruised to their fifth shutout of the season with a 31-0 whitewash of the Rams. L-S is looking for a 3-peat in the 4A bracket while the Rams won their first playoff game in school history with a 28-14 slugfest over Donegal. The Pioneers have defeated their last ten opponents by an average margin of 37 points. Defense provided an early spark in this one. On just the second play from scrimmage, Giovanni Malatesta picked off a pass and returned the ball 40 yards to the K-D ten. Kennard-Dale, winners of the YAIAA division, end their season at 10-2. Like the Pioneers, who lost their opening game of the season to Warwick, the Rams dropped their opener to Octorara. “Kennard-Dale was a very physical team,” said Ridenour. “They reminded me of Garden Spot. People seem to forget about GS. They won five of their last six games. They are good and are going to be good next year. Warwick was more balanced than K-D. The game plan was to make them throw the ball. We thought if they had to, it was an advantage to us.”

“What’s really interesting with this craft is that it combines the skills of working with different metals, mainly steel, and the creative artistic design elements that people incorporate into the item,” said Luke Shultz, member of the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmiths’ Association (PABA). “We call ourselves artist blacksmiths, as opposed to the traditional (image) of a blacksmith from 200 years ago.” The PABA gallery meeting will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Paradise Community Center, 6 Londonvale Road, Paradise, located just off Route 30. The group is part of the Artists Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA), one of two chapters in Pennsylvania. “We cover eastern Pennsylvania, with some members from surrounding states,” said Shultz of the 20-year-old group, which boasts about 200 members who have a general interest in working with metal. “(That interest is) mainly blacksmithing or forging, but

we also have some people who do tinsmithing, silversmithing, general fabricating, and other disciplines within the umbrella of metalwork,” Shultz said. The group holds regular meetings, all of which are open to the public. Meetings are often held at a member’s shop or historic blacksmith shop and include demonstrations of certain skills or projects. The gallery meeting, which is always held in December, is traditionally located in Paradise. “We call it our gallery meeting because it is a little different than the rest of our meetings,” said Shultz, who noted that the meeting is a showcase of metal-related items. “Members bring in examples of what they worked on throughout the year or collections they might have of antique tools or things they want to sell.” Another highlight of the event is the Ironmaster of the Day competition. “Any member can make an item designated for that competition,” explained Shultz, who said that the items are displayed at the meeting and voted on to determine which maker will be Ironmaster of the Day. This
year’s designated item to create is a holiday wreath. “The person who makes (a wreath for the competition) creates their interpretation of a metal holiday wreath,” said Shultz. “They are all making the same thing, but there are so many variations on how people approach making that item.” According to Shultz, interest in the craft of blacksmithing has grown recently. “Blacksmithing ... has seen a great resurgence in the last four years, because of television reality shows like ‘Forged in Fire,’” he said. “One of the
best ways to get into the hobby is to join an association like PABA, where you can go to meetings and see demonstrations about how to work with metal,” he noted. “The (attendees) will be rubbing elbows and talking with experienced (crafters).” Shultz added that the organization has a lending library that features several hundred volumes of books, DVDs, and periodicals.
