Down but not out

It takes years of hard work to become an Olympic athlete, but just seconds for that dream to come crashing down. Mount Joy native and Manheim Central alumna Jillian Wolgemuth knows all about that.

In her team’s second-to-last match before the Paris Olympics, Jillian, a member of USA Field Hockey, received the ball and took off running.

“God has a plan, and I am going to focus on the positives.”

“I was running and cut left and felt a pop in my knee,” recalled the defensive player. “My first thought as I fell to the ground was, ‘I just tore my ACL.’”

Injuring the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which stabilizes the knee, is devastating for athletes, Jillian shared, noting that it requires surgery and a long rehab - sometimes up to a year before resuming play.

“I’m a very logical person,” Jillian said. “I knew right when it happened that I had a decision to make. No matter what, I was not going to the Olympics. I had to change course.”

The experience of missing the Paris Olympics tested her confidence, impacted her self-esteem and, ultimately, underscored her faith.

“I decided, ‘Do I want to wake up every day, be miserable and feel sorry for myself?’” she said by phone from Charlotte, N.C., where she lives as a member of USA Field Hockey. “Don’t get me wrong - I do feel sorry for myself. But I decided to attack rehab

with all of the energy I have, to stay positive and to focus on the things I can control.”

As she continues her recovery, Jillian is leaning on friends, family and her church community. “I have a very tight group of women who have helped me realize there’s a bigger picture. It’s not all about Jillian gaining the title of ‘Olympian,’” she shared. “God has a plan, and I am going to focus on the positives.”

Growing up in Mount Joy, the daughter of Randy Wolgemuth and Betsy Ebersole played field

hockey for the first time in middle school while attending Kraybill Mennonite School.

“I grew up playing every sport,” she said. “I loved anything that involved a ball. At the time, I was looking for a fall season sport to play, because soccer was a spring sport at Kraybill, and my mom suggested I try field hockey.”

She soon realized she loved the sport.

“It’s a very fun, very fast-moving sport, which I really enjoy. It’s very dynamic,” she commented. “It’s a nice mix between skillful

On Saturday, Sept. 14, Mastersonville Fire Company will mark its 75th anniversary, and you’re invited to the party.

The festivities will take place at the station, 2121 Meadow View Road, Manheim, starting at 4 p.m. and will feature an open house with members on hand to answer questions; fire apparatus to explore; bounce houses and barrel train rides for children;

food trucks; free cake, popcorn and cotton candy; and fireworks beginning about 8:30 p.m.

Eric Shields, second assistant chief and a volunteer with the fire company for more than 15 years, said the station has deep roots in the community.

“What started as a community’s effort to provide themselves with fire protection in the 1940s has resulted in a community-supported fire company that provides fire

Dennis Steiner is legally blind. That doesn’t make him any more qualified to be the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of VisionCorps, but it certainly does provide him with a unique perspective and a very specific insight into the organization and its purpose.

“It does give me a perspective that others might not have,” said Steiner. “There are qualities that a CEO must have. But I don’t think blindness gives me any

leadership qualities.”

“My vision tends to fluctuate,” Steiner continued. “I don’t drive a car. I take the bus to work and usually catch a ride home or use Uber. I use assisted software on my computer (to read). If I’m reading for extended periods of time, I use audiobooks. For me, I grew up with vision loss. I don’t think of my vision loss as who I am. It’s something I deal with.”

Cavod seeks dancers for new show

Cavod Performing Arts will hold auditions for a new show, “The Unplugged Christmas Carol,” at 665 W. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, Sept. 6, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. The tap call, only required for those with tap experience, will be from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Cavod is seeking dancers ages 15 to 20, and people do not need to be Cavod students to audition. The show will incorporate the following dance genres: ballet, contemporary, lyrical, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. Anyone who is experienced in at least one

of these styles is invited to audition.

“The Unplugged Christmas Carol” is a modern twist on the Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol.” While phones connect people globally, they can also distance people from those nearby. The show follows Eva on her journey to rediscover the true meaning of Christmas and the warmth of human connection. Grace Mae Bell is the writer, director, and choreographer. For more information and to sign up for an audition, visit https://cavod .org/audition-form/.

protection and emergency medical services still 75 years later,” he shared.

“The Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company has grown over the years from a small fire company with one engine - a 1935 Dodge purchased from Mount Joy Fire Department that was housed in a neighbor’s garage - to the first official fire house built in 1950 on land that was donated by the Hess family.”

The station serves Rapho and Mount Joy townships and surrounding areas. As the needs of the community grew, so did the fire house, Shields said, and the station added apparatus. The station served the community from 2166 Meadow View Road for almost 70 years before the decision was made to purchase land across the street for future use.

“In 2017, ground was broken for a new fire station to be built on that land. The current fire station has six large bays to house our apparatus,” Shields said, noting that the station houses engines, tankers, emergency medical services vehicles and more. “This building also has plenty of office space and a training room.”

Although the station has moved and grown over the decades, one thing has remained constant.

“We are 100% volunteer from running the emergency calls - fires, accidents and medical services - to the day-to-day business administration tasks that make the fire company operate,” Shields said. “Everyone’s time is valuable. Giving up their time to do something for their community or someone having a worse day than them only appeals to very select few people nowadays. The interest and the time are not there for most people anymore. … We have been very fortunate in our community to have

their support and to still gain enough volunteers to keep us operating.”

Shields said the station is always looking for new volunteers who want to serve their community, noting that there are many ways to help, whether it’s actively responding to emergency calls or working behind the scenes in the office. He also encourages people to consider joining as a social member to help with fundraisers and community events.

“The job does not reward you with money, but it rewards you with that good inside feeling knowing that you were there to help someone at their worst time of need,” he said.

He hopes the community will come out to mark the 75th anniversary and reflect on the impact the fire station has made over the years.

“On behalf of Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company, a huge thank you to all the fire company members past and current and to all the community members and businesses who have dedicated their time, hard work, long hours and monetary support over the last 75-plus years to make the fire company what it is today,” he said. “Come enjoy an evening out with your neighbors, friends and your local first responders. Come learn the day-to-day operations of your local volunteer fire company. … Stay for some free treats as a thank you from the Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company and then enjoy the fireworks.”

For more information about the fire station, visit www.masterson villefire.com or follow “Mastersonville Fire Co” on Facebook. People may also stop by the station on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. to speak to someone in person.

In 2009, Lynda Charles organized a bake sale to raise money for her sisterin-law and her co-worker. The women had recently received diagnoses of breast cancer, and the treatments prevented them from receiving an income or insurance from working. The bake sale raised more than $9,000, and it prompted Lynda and her husband, David, to create Mountville-based nonprofit Help The Fight. Fifteen years later, the organization has raised more than $1.2 million dollars for breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County.

Only 500 tickets for the banquet will be sold, and the deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 14. Each table will seat a maximum of eight guests. “Our mission is to empower individuals with vision loss to attain independence,” said Steiner. “If people are experiencing vision loss, they should reach out. I think people need to recognize that vision loss is not the end of the world. People can live successful lives, happy lives and continue to do the things they like to do. We can have a very positive impact on people’s lives.”

Help The Fight will host its 15th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The event will take place from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., and it will include live and silent

The banquet will include a buffet dinner and a benefit auction. Items available to bid on will include designer handbags, weekend getaways, artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, toys for children, furniture, gift cards from local restaurants and services for homes and families. Separate tickets may be purchased with cash to participate in various prize drawings held throughout the evening. A prize drawing for a cash reward will take place to celebrate the event’s 15th anniversary.

Every year, the items included in the banquet’s auctions are donated by various local businesses and individuals in the community. Anyone who wishes to donate items prior to the banquet may contact Help The Fight’s office via email or by calling 717-455-7095.

“We’re inviting members of the local community to join us as we celebrate 15 years and raising $1.2 million for cancer patients in Lancaster County,” said patient coordinator Susie Dailey. “The generosity of our supporters allows us

VisionCorps serves about 1,500 people annually, 75% of whom are over the age of 65. VisionCorps also administers 10,000 vision tests to preschool students in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, Adams and Chester counties each year.

“I don’t think everyone is aware of the opportunities that are available (through VisionCorps),” said Steiner. “Based on census data, we know there are more people out there who could benefit from our services. Some people are reluctant to reach out, and I think part of it is fear. I don’t think anyone accepts vision loss. We like to call it adjustment.”

VisionCorps employs about 200 people in Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, as well as in Little Rock, Ark., and about half of those individuals are visually impaired.

“Those of us who are vision impaired have a saying; ‘The only things we can’t do is drive a car or fly a plane, but give us the keys and we’ll try,’” said Steiner. “People say, ‘I can’t read the newspaper anymore.’ But

“One of my staff came up with the name VisionCorps. It’s like the Peace Corps focused on vision,” said Steiner. “A lot of the organizations for the blind started in the early 1900s. We had a lot of vets returning from World War I experiencing vision loss.

VisionCorps was started by a group of women who wanted to help those folks. Our focus is not about taking care of people but giving them the skills to take care of themselves and be independent so they can start families, build houses and earn sustainable wages.”

Field

Jillian continued to play field hockey at Manheim Central High School, graduating in 2016. She played for four years at Duke University before graduating in 2020.

In January of her senior year in college, she tried out for the U.S. team but wasn’t chosen, so she faced a decision: work to become a professional athlete after graduation or pursue a job in her major, political science.

She decided to pursue hockey as a career and began playing for a team in the English league before coming home after one season due to the COVID19 pandemic.

New Zealand, among other places.

While playing in an international hockey federation series in London as a precursor to the Olympics, she experienced her injury, forcing her to stay stateside and cheer on her teammates through the TV as they competed in Paris.

“I was on the edge of my seat during every match,” she said. “I know those girls so intimately, and I was cheering them on for every play.”

The sale will include tens of thousands of gently used books, with categories including fiction, history, biography, religion, and children’s books. Locally made soft pretzels and lemonade will be available for purchase as well.

The sale will feature daily deals. On Sept. 12, Mennonite Life members will receive early admission an 8:15 a.m. Membership must be current and will be confirmed before early access is granted. To become a Mennonite Life member, visit www.mennonitelife .org or call 717-393-9745.

On Sept. 13, a special offer will allow shoppers to buy five books and get one for free. On Sept. 14, all books will be half price, and people may fill a box for a set fee.

In the spring of 2021, she was contacted by new coaches with USA Field Hockey who were impressed by her skill and asked her to train with them. She joined the team and soon began competing all over the world. She’s played in India, Germany, the Netherlands, Argentina, Australia and

She’s been using her recovery time to focus on the future. At 26, she has years ahead of her in the sport, she said, noting that many female hockey players play professionally into their 30s. She’s also not ruling out the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“This injury has allowed me to restructure my framework of success,” she said. “‘Olympian,’ although it is still a goal, it’s not THE goal. Instead, I’m focused on what this team can do and what hockey can do for girls in the United States.”
