A taste of Germany in Manheim
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you’ve ever wanted to visit the famed German Christmas markets but an international trip is out of your budget, you’re in luck. Head to Lancaster Liederkranz instead.
The organization will hold its annual Christkindlmarkt on Sunday, Dec. 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Liederkranz, 772 S. Chiques Road, Manheim.
“Our mission is to perpetuate the German culture and traditions in our local community,” said Elise Fasnacht, event chair. “Germany has a long history of Christkindlmarkts, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for the
community to come together, socialize and enjoy the festive atmosphere.”
The festival will include entertainment, shopping, food

Christmas carolers will perform in the pavilion throughout the day.
The Alpenrose Kindergruppe,
a children’s dancing group, will entertain at noon. Santa Claus and his German friend, Knecht Ruprecht, will arrive at 1 p.m., and photos with Santa will be available from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. The Alpenrose Schuhplattlers, an adult group of dancers, will perform at 2 p.m., and folk-dance group Alleweil Jung will entertain at 3 p.m.
In the clubhouse, a children’s store and craft activity will be held in the rathskeller, while the Liederkranz store will be open in the lobby.
Vendors will be set up throughout the pavilion, selling handmade German items, clothing, jewelry, crafts and more.

Decorating inspiration can be found throughout the locations on the Women’s Club of Manheim’s Holiday Tour of Homes. The tour will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.
“We have many different
types of homes on this year’s tour,” said Karen Lewis, committee chair. “We have a newer home, and the homeowner is an interior decorator. We have two one-room schoolhouses. One is a home that’s been a home for a long time. The other just changed into an Airbnb. It’s

The members of Ruhl’s Church believe food and fellowship go hand in hand with their mission of spreading God’s love. With that in mind, the church will host a free dine-in Christmas dinner on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. The dinner will be held at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.
The meal will be served
buffet-style and will feature baked ham, baked potatoes, green beans, rolls and dessert. During the dinner, guests will be invited to sing along to some traditional Christmas carols.
“Years ago, Ruhl’s Church held a Christmas Eve Eve celebration on Dec. 23 and served a free sitdown ham dinner,” said church member Kris Gray. “We continued the tradition for a few years until the pandemic changed the
CHARTER BUS DRIVERS
venue to a drive-through meal in 2020 along with the ‘Drive to Bethlehem’ with scenes from the real Christmas story.”
That event was very well received over the past few years, she said, adding, “Because of the overwhelming positive responses from those attending the event, we continued to hold it yearly through Christmas 2023.”
Still, the church members missed the opportunity a sit-down meal provided for socializing and community.
“We wanted to welcome people to return inside the church and enjoy some
sweet fellowship over a delicious meal,” Gray shared. “With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is a blessing to be able to relax over a meal with friends.”
She also extended an invitation to the community to attend the church’s traditional Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24.
“We hope you can join us as we celebrate the true reason for the Christmas season - our Savior’s birth,” she said.
Ruhl’s Church is handicapped-accessible, and parking is available in a large lot.
The ham dinner is free, but reservations are required by Wednesday, Dec. 11. To make a reservation, call 717-665-4499.

very modern. They added a floating staircase, so it has two floors, even though it’s a former one-room schoolhouse.”
Six homes throughout Manheim will be featured on the tour, along with the Fasig and Keath houses operated by the Manheim Historical Society and the Harry Shearer Heritage Center.
At the home of Bill and Carol Kelly, visitors will enjoy an open floor plan, stone fireplace and a collection of Santas. Other locations will spotlight minimalist, vintage holiday décor and a 12-foot-tall
Christmas tree as well as a collection of lighted ceramic Christmas trees and lots of fresh greens and festive colors.
One of the homes on the tour was previously owned by the late Rick Hershey, known around town as being the Manheim Barons’ No. 1 fan.
“It’s a beautiful stone home,” Lewis said. “It has a lot of charm.” Highlights of the decorations there will include a Victorian Dickens village and train display as well as a “Star Wars”themed tree and Rick’s collection of “Star Wars” toys and memorabilia from his childhood.
The women’s club has been holding the holiday tour for decades, and it never fails to inspire, Lewis said, noting that she’s picked up her own
design tips from tours over the years.
“It’s a really fun day,” she said. “It gets you in the mood for Christmas, and you get some fun decorating ideas. And you get ideas from things you might have around your home, and they are beautiful, but it’s something you would never think of.”
Proceeds from the holiday tour benefit people and organizations in Manheim. The Women’s Club of Manheim sponsors a family annually at Christmas, providing gifts and a Weis Markets gift card. The group also awards grants to nonprofits in Manheim and sponsors senior girls of the month at Manheim Central High School.
“We give scholarships to Manheim Central senior
girls who are pursuing higher education,” Lewis shared. “We give out five $1,000 scholarships each year.”
Tickets for the home tour may be purchased in advance for a discount at Longenecker’s True Value, 127 Doe Run Road, Manheim; Shaub’s Dry Cleaning, 22 S. Main St., Manheim; or Divine Consign, 37 Market Square, Manheim, or from any member of the Women’s Club. Tickets will also be available on the day of the event at any of the locations on the tour.
The Women’s Club of Manheim is always looking for new members. To learn more, contact Lewis at klewis1835@yahoo.com. For more information, visit the Women’s Club of Manheim’s Facebook page.
