Twin Valley High School hosts Cheer Showcase
BY FRANCINE FULTON
For the second year, members of the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) cheerleading squad earned a bid to compete at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) National High School Cheerleading Championship at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. The competition was scheduled to take place from Feb. 7 to 10.
To celebrate the accomplishment, the girls were given a formal sendoff to nationals during a Twin Valley Cheer Showcase held on Feb. 1 in the TVHS gym. The event also included performances by the Twin Valley Middle School cheerleading squad and performers
from the Twin Valley 8U and 10U cheer squads.
The event was presented by the Twin Valley Cheerleading Parents Club, which is a new organization that formed in the spring of last year. According to its Facebook page, the group’s goal is “to provide support and financial resources for the Twin Valley cheerleading program.” The club sponsors fundraisers, sells spirit wear and acts as a liaison between the cheerleading teams, parents, the school administration and the community.
“(The showcase) was an opportunity for them to show (their routine) to their friends and families that are not going to nationals with us,” said Nichole
Wanner, club president. “The two youth competition teams performed and then the middle school competition team. At the end, the high school cheerleaders performed the routine that they (were going to) do in Disney.”
The event also featured some fun competitions that involved the cheerleaders’ parents, including a Pom Mom Challenge, where mothers competed to capture pom-poms, and a Daddy Jump Off, where fathers had an opportunity to try various cheerleading jumps.
To qualify for nationals, the team, led by coaches Jess Hoffman and Jamie Payne, participated in the UCA Regionals on Dec. 15, 2024, held at the Santander Arena
Meet the Mayor: Esther Prosser
BY FRANCINE FULTON
If you want to know anything about what is going on in the borough of Elverson, just ask Mayor Esther Prosser, who was elected to a four-year term in 2021. Prosser, a graduate of Twin Valley High School, has a true affinity for her hometown, which has the nickname, “The Greatest Square Mile.” Prosser, who also sells real estate in the area, recently shared information about what her jobs entail with the Community Courier.

Community Courier: What are some of your job duties as mayor?
Prosser: A mayor’s primary responsibility is to keep residents safe. I have resurrected the Elverson Neighborhood Watch Block Captain program and, with
all eyes everywhere, we have successfully helped create a safe town. Both (the real estate and mayoral) jobs include connecting with Elverson residents, and that’s fun - everything Elverson!
Community Courier: What would people be surprised to learn about your job in real estate?

Mini-THON Club to offer Babysitting Night
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Building on the success of their Christmas program, members of the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Mini-THON Club will hold a Valentine’s Day Babysitting Night on Friday, Feb. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the TVHS cafeteria. Parents will be able to have a night out while their children take part in games and crafts, watch a movie and enjoy snacks and beverages. A pizza dinner will also be provided.
Ashley Siv, who is the club overall and was selected for the 2024-25 Mini-THON Ambassadors program, said that the attendees enjoyed the previous Babysitting Night held on Dec. 13, 2024. “Our last Babysitting Night was so much fun for the kids; they didn’t want to leave,” said Ashley. “We provided them with dinner, several games and a Christmas craft and ended the night with a movie. We plan to do the same at our Babysitting Night on Valentine’s Day.”

Prosser: I think many feel it’s easy. What could be so hard as putting up a sign, getting pictures taken and showing a home? There are many details and complications that require experience, patience and trust in a God who runs everything so both buyers and sellers come to the settlement table feeling well-served. And what better town to live in than Elverson? People move here and love it. That is satisfying.
Community Courier: What are your favorite parts of both jobs?
Prosser: In real estate, meeting with people and helping them by providing information, answering their questions and working for them. In short, serving people. This is also true for my job as mayor. Connecting with those who live here and doing what I can, so they come to love this town as I do, is a lot of fun.
Community Courier: What do you do in your spare time?
Prosser: I am an active person and love the outdoors. We began an Elverson pickleball group and play weekly. I love to run, so you will see me running the Elverson paths and sidewalks. Tennis is a passion, so when my outof-town sister is visiting, we will hit the courts. I am an Elverson Fitness Club member and try to make it to weight and cardio classes there. I have recently begun hiking and am enjoying the trails at the French Creek State Park. Last June, I cycled the Erie Canal Trail in New York with four others. It was hot and exhausting but fun! My greatest passion is living for the God who made me. I am a member of the Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson and love worshipping, praying with and connecting with others there.
Community Courier: What do you love about Elverson, and what makes it a great place to live?
Prosser: Elverson is a safe, quiet and friendly small town. Neighbors know each other and many strive to live “loving your neighbor as yourself.” This is what makes Elverson the greatest square mile.

Foodraisers to feature homemade favorites
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Volunteers with the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will once again present their monthly “foodraisers” for 2025 at Historic Joanna Furnace.
The HCVHA will hold a sale of homemade yeastraised potato fastnachts on Tuesday, March 4. Fastnachts can be purchased by the half or full dozen and can be eaten fresh or can be frozen to eat at a later time.
Fastnachts must be ordered in advance at www .haycreek.org. The order deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 25. Orders can be picked up

in Reading. “You have to get a certain score to get a bid for nationals,” said Wanner. The team also won the Berks County Interscholastic Athletic Association (BCIAA) competition held on Dec. 7, 2024, at Exeter High School.
Last year, the girls from Twin Valley competed in the Small Game Day Non-Tumble Division. Game Day is a traditional event that represents what cheerleaders do on the sidelines of games to encourage the crowd.
This year, the squad was part of the tumbling division. “They had to have at least one or two cheerleaders that tumble, and they have two,” Wanner noted.
The girls on the squad represent all TVHS grade levels, nine to 12, and they have an intense practice schedule. “They practice five days a week after school and on weekends before a competition,” Wanner said. “To be on the competition team, they are here year-
round. They are required to cheer for football and basketball.”
The girls also had to fundraise in order to finance the cost of travel, accommodations and entry fees needed to compete at nationals. Fundraisers included a spaghetti dinner, a gift card drawing and a gift basket drawing.
“(The Parents Club) did some fundraising, so we were able to offset the cost, but there are some out-ofpocket (costs) for parents,” Wanner noted.
She said the girls were optimistic about nationals. “The judges like to see the tumbling, and we didn’t have that last year,” Wanner noted. “They put a lot into it.”
To learn more about the squad, search for “Twin Valley Cheerleading” on Facebook. More information about the Parents Club can be found on Facebook by searching for “Twin Valley Cheerleading Parents Club.”

The importance of maintaining dental hygiene is emphasized from the time most people are small children. Many parents start early by cleaning kids’ teeth the moment the first one pushes its way through a baby’s gums, and that hopefully kick-starts a lifelong devotion to dental care.
Appearance may be the main reason that many people prioritize dental hygiene, and few things give as strong an impression as a set of pearly whites. But health is another notable reason to make dental hygiene a priority. It’s well known that dental health is adversely affected by poor
dental hygiene habits, but the rest of the body also can suffer when individuals don’t take time to care for their teeth.
For example, the American Academy for Oral & Systemic Health (AAOSH) reports that poor dental hygiene and inflammation of the arteries are linked. That’s because bacteria from the mouth enters the bloodstream and causes the arteries to harden, thus increasing a person’s risk for stroke or heart attack.
The AAOSH also notes that poor oral health has been connected to high blood pressure and elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein

The goal of the MiniTHON Club is to raise funds for Four Diamonds, a nonprofit organization with a mission to conquer childhood cancer. A fee will be charged for the Babysitting Night, which will be donated to the charity.

The Mini-THON Club holds many fundraisers throughout the year, including a Breakfast with Santa, a craft fair and car washes. The main fundraiser of the student-run club is its Mini-THON. The dance marathon is modeled after the Penn State THON, which raises money for families with children being
treated for cancer at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. This school year’s event is set for Friday, April 25, from 5 to 11 p.m. This will be TVHS’ 10th year participating in the event.

Keep bathrooms clean to reduce health risks
Homes are often characterized as sanctuaries for their inhabitants. When a home is warm and welcoming, it can be the perfect place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Although no one wants to imagine danger lurking

in their homes, certain areas of a home, including the bathroom, can pose health risks if they are not properly maintained. In addition, issues that can affect residents’ health may not always be so visible, which underscores how important it can be to learn
about the various ways to keep a bathroom clean so it does not make anyone sick.
- Routinely inspect tiles and caulk. Mold is one of the biggest potential health risks that can develop in a bathroom. Damage to tiles and caulk can foster mold growth. When caulk cracks or separates from tile or any other surface where it is applied, moisture can get in and lead to conditions that promote the growth of mold. The same process can unfold with cracked tiles, so it is imperative that damaged caulk is removed and areas are recaulked. Cracked or damaged tiles also should be replaced to reduce the risk of mold
school’s front entrance near the flag pole between 5 and 5:30 p.m. and then pick up their children at 8 p.m.

infestation, which can trigger allergic reactions and exacerbate issues like asthma.
- Replace a malfunctioning bathroom fan. Bathroom fans that are not working at peak capacity can lead to moisture issues and adversely affect indoor air quality. A bathroom fan that vents into the attic can lead to mold growth in that area of the home. In addition, malfunctioning bathroom fans can contribute to moisture issues that result in mold growth. Bathroom fans that direct air outside of the house as opposed to an area like an attic can lead to healthier

“We are doing potato fastnachts, which is a Pennsylvania Dutch German tradition. We use potatoes because it has a nicer flavor,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director.
Unlike doughnuts, fastnachts do not have holes in most cases. “We cut them in squares,” Zerr explained, noting that volunteers will make 300 dozen fastnachts. “We get here early (on March 4) - around 5 a.m. - and everything is laid out. Every batch is pre-measured, so when we show up, the volunteers take the ingredients and mix them. The dough is raised, then we cut the fastnachts. Then they are raised again and fried. That’s why we don’t have pickup until 12 noon - so we can get the whole process done.”
by the nonprofit organization. For example, scarecrow-making items are needed for the Hay Creek Festival. “It’s the time of year when we start collecting long-sleeved, button-down shirts and jeans and fabric remnants for our scarecrow building,” he noted. “We also take flea market items that people may want to donate, which we use during our Apple Festival flea market in October.”

(LDL) cholesterol - also known as bad cholesteroleach of which pose a threat to cardiovascular health.
In addition, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) notes that periodontal disease causes inflammation in the gums. That’s a notable link, as the ADA points out that inflammation in the body can cause high blood sugar levels, which is a known risk factor for diabetes. Simple oral hygiene practices like daily brushing and flossing can protect against gum disease that can increase the risk for diabetes.
Women should know that taking care of their teeth could be a way to protect their unborn children. A 2021 study published in the journal BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth found that periodontal disease is strongly associated with premature birth. Authors of the study note that premature birth is associated with a host of negative outcomes, including perinatal mortality, immature lung development, reduced feeding ability, and inferior weight gain.
Respiratory issues may
also occur as a result of poor oral hygiene. The mouth is vulnerable to bacteria growth, which is one reason why daily measures like brushing and flossing are important. The AAOSH notes that once bacteria reaches the lungs, an individual’s risk for infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other respiratory issues increases.
Dental hygiene practices like brushing and flossing are simple measures, but they can have a profound effect on individuals’ overall health.
Additional foodraisers will be an Irish shepherd’s pie dinner on Tuesday, March 18, and a potpie and chili sale on Thursday, March 27. Details about ordering will be available on the website by Thursday, Feb. 13.
Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, is located just off Route 10, 3 miles north of Morgantown. Proceeds from fundraisers and events benefit the HCVHA, a nonprofit organization that owns, maintains and preserves Historic Joanna Furnace, a charcoal iron furnace that was in operation from 1791 to 1898, as well as the Tri-County Heritage Library, which HCVHA acquired in 2021.
Zerr pointed out that those who come to the foodraisers are informed of donations that are needed
The Tri-County Heritage Library, 4979 Twin Valley Road, Elverson, is also seeking donations. “For our library, we are looking to collect local genealogies. We are also collecting local artifacts or memorabilia from families for preservation and to display in the library. We want items that have local history to them,” Zerr noted. “We are also looking for community cookbooks such as those from local churches. Before all these cookbooks get thrown away, we would be interested in having them donated to our library.”
Donations for the library can be dropped off during the foodraisers or during the library’s hours of operation on Tuesdays from noon to 5 p.m.
Those with questions about the foodraisers, donating items or upcoming HCVHA activities may email info@haycreek.org or call 610-286-0388.

that various types of bacteria and mold can form on shower curtains and liners. These bacteria and mold can cause illness in some people, particularly if they already have compromised immune systems due to a preexisting condition or the common cold. If shower curtains and liners are showing their age, replace them immediately.
