all is the perfect time to join the Berks Community Strollers, a local hiking group that has scheduled weekly outings in October, November and December. The Strollers, an offshoot of the Berks Community Hiking Club, was formed for those interested in more of a leisurely stroll rather than a fast-paced hike. People do not have to be members to attend Strollers’ hikes. “On any given hike we have 10 to 15 people, and after the hike, some go to lunch together at the nearest restaurant,” explained Strollers member Angele Arutunian, noting that hike locations are typically listed weekly in the Community Calendar section of the Community Courier. “Although (participants) are mostly seniors, sometimes we get younger people who see the hike in the paper.” Those who would like to join the Strollers group are asked to pay a nominal yearly membership fee. Members are given special invitations to the annual summer hike and picnic, a Christmas hike and luncheon and multi-day trips.

“Although (participants) are mostly seniors, sometimes we get younger people who see the hike in the paper.” On Oct. 16, the Strollers will hike at the Blue Marsh Lake Stilling Basin, 1280 Palisades Drive, Leesport. Through a state grant, Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is helping people in recovery build wealth. This isn’t monetary wealth, but rather a wealth of resources and support they need to succeed in their recovery journey. “ We’re looking at the entire package people in recovery need, whether that’s finding a job or a place to live or rebuilding their relationship with their family,” said Stacy Emminger, executive director of DSAA. “This is called ‘recovery capital,’ and the more stable your recovery capital is, the better your odds of staying in recovery.” The Recovery Capital Program (Re-Cap) is accepting applicants age 18 and older to participate in the program. Although DSAA’s grant is for a two-year pilot program, Re-Cap participants will commit to the program for one year. During that time, they will work one-on-one with a recovery

coach and will have access to certified recovery specialists as well as computer software designed to connect them to community resources, collect data and monitor progress, Emminger said. “People who are new in recovery, oftentimes they

have a bunch of barriers facing them. They might be on probation. They might need to find a job or a place to live,” she explained. “All of these can be barriers to a successful recovery.” DSAA is the first agency in the state to use the Re-Cap

software, Emminger said, adding, “All of this is clientdriven, and it’s very individualized, depending on what the client needs.” Over the course of the year, the client initially will meet at least weekly with the coach, but frequency will decrease as recovery stabilizes. “The coach is always available for a text or phone call or a meeting at any time during the year,” Emminger emphasized. The goal at the end of the year is for the client to be self-sufficient in his or her recovery efforts. While the grant will fund the recovery coach, Emminger will head up the family component of Re-Cap. “People who are in recovery have often burned a lot of bridges with their family, and they aren’t sure how to See DSAA pg 3

make amends or how to rebuild those relationships,” she said. “I’ll help families assess their needs. I’ll provide addiction education and help guide them in how they can best support their loved one.” Emminger noted that participation in Re-Cap is completely free. “One of the reasons we applied for this grant is because typically in recovery, people have to pay out of pocket for care or they have to use the program attached to a specific facility, which can be very limiting,” she stated. “Our coach will work with the

person regardless of where they are in their recovery or what recovery path they are taking.” DSAA is one of just a handful of agencies to be awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and Emminger is hopeful that once the pilot program is wrapping up, she will be able to apply to fund a second recovery coach. To apply for Re-Cap, visit www.dsasquared.org and fill out a contact form, call the office at 717-492-4596 or send a message through DSAA’s Facebook page.

the animals,” Samuel W. M. Griffin, president of the Ryerss board of managers, told attendees. “We thank you for your support of Ryerss Farm.” Officiating for the first time at the event was the Rev. Stacey Jones-Anderson, who is the new pastor at Coventryville United Methodist Church. She succeeds pastor Will Humes, who presided over the ceremony for the past 10 years. Jones-Anderson led attendees in the singing of the hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful” and offered a Scripture reading and a prayer for the animals. “I am so excited to be here. I love animals,” Jones-Anderson stated. “We are going to worship the Lord for the animals He has brought to our lives. We are so thankful to God for them.” She noted that the Ryerss blessing was the third ceremony that she presided over that day. Churches and other organizations worldwide hold Blessing of the Animals events on or near Oct. 3, which is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis, who was born in Italy in the 12th century and is the founder of the Franciscan order of the Catholic Church, is wellknown for his love of animals and nature. Following the blessing, attendees were invited to shop at the Ryerss gift shop or purchase homemade baked goods. People also visited with the horses that reside at the farm. Ryerss Farm cares for more than 80 aged, abused or injured horses, providing a home with 383 acres where they can spend their golden years. The horses at Ryerss are never worked or ridden again. Founded in 1888, Ryerss commemorated its 133rd anniversary with a celebration at the farm on Sept. 25. The community is invited to support Ryerss by taking part in its sponsor-a-horse program. Individuals, families and groups can sponsor one of the residents for an annual fee. They also have the option to visit the farm and choose which horse they would like to sponsor. Another option is to sponsor a particular service that Ryerss provides such as an annual dental visit or a horse “pedicure.” Horses’

Youngsters can participate in the homestead scavenger hunt, play early American games, and create early toys and crafts. Family groups can register and compete in the new Woods Walk where they can experience life in a trappers’ camp, participate in musket shooting, and compete in tomahawk throwing, archery, and more. Entering the 19th century, visitors will learn how to make paper, listen to storytelling, and learn about open-fire cooking. The early farmstead had to fulfill all its own needs. Artisans and interpreters will show how soap was made and hides were tanned. Visitors will learn how bread was baked in an outdoor beehive oven and how cooking was done in the homestead kitchen fireplace. They will learn about spinning and weaving, talk with an early laundress and seamstress, and explore a country store. Late 19th- and 20th-century industrial processes and equipment will be displayed and demonstrated. Everyone can meet the blacksmith and the metal casters and see early tractors. There will be plenty of oldfashioned foods, including open fire-cooked apple butter, homemade soups, chicken barbecue, hot dogs, snacks, baked goods, and more. At noon, a themed basket auction will be held. Admission and parking are free. This event is sponsored by the Pathways Community Homeschool in partnership with Brecknock Township. A variety of makes and models of cars and trucks will be featured during Historic Poole Forge’s annual Cruise to the Forge, set for Sunday, Oct. 17. Also featured will be food, music, a silent auction and tours of the mansion. The car show will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., but visitors are invited to stay on-site to enjoy the festivities until 2 p.m. “Judging for the top five cars will be at 1 p.m., and the silent auction will end at 1 p.m. But food will still be available and there will be music until 2 p.m.,” noted Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “People can picnic and enjoy a lovely afternoon in the park and they are welcome to stay.” Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. Spectators will be admitted free of charge. A DJ will provide music, and there will be a perfor-

mance by Shakehouse Music. “We will have a live band back this year, which will set a nice tone,” Ekdahl said. “We will also have the mansion open for historic guided tours.” A professional photographer will take photos of the vehicles as they enter the car show and drive over the site’s covered bridge, which crosses the Conestoga River. Photos will be available for purchase. Craft vendors will be stationed outside this year, and the silent auction will also be located outside. Auction items will include gift cards and items donated by local businesses. Food will be available for sale by Spanish Island Food Truck and Lickity Split. Locally made baked goods, including pies and whoopie pies, will be for sale. Visitors are welcome to stroll the gardens and grounds, and children may enjoy the site’s playground.

Auto Care from pg 8 Prior to opening Christian Brothers Automotive in Downingtown, Jason worked across several different industries, honing operations and management skills. He spent his early professional life as a legal secretary working with the brand and later worked with them again during his time in the title industry. He was quickly impressed by the way CBA is committed to helping others in the community, and witnessed it himself when three corporate members came out to help his family when their home flooded in Houston. He would like to bring that same approach to the community of Downingtown and the surrounding areas. His management philosophy centers around investing in the success of his employees, which he believes creates an atmosphere where exceptional cus-

tomer service and satisfaction can thrive. Joining more than 240 Christian Brothers Automotive locations across the nation, the Downingtown shop follows the company’s guiding principle: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Built on the idea that having a car serviced should be easy, Christian Brothers Automotive offers free shuttle service, educational estimates and complimentary courtesy inspections for guests. Christian Brothers Automotive was ranked number one by J.D. Power in Customer Satisfaction among aftermarket full-service maintenance and repair providers two times in a row. Shortly after Bryant Glick worked with Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy to organize the first Pickin’ in the Park event in Terre Hill in May, he began looking forward to the next one. “With the success of (the) spring (event), a number of people encouraged us to try to do another one this fall,” said Glick, who connected with New Holland Ambulance Association’s EMS chief, Darrell Fisher, to make the organization the beneficiary of the event. The second Pickin’ in the Park, which will include steak and chili cook-offs, public safety vehicles and New Holland first responders, food vendors, and live music, will be held in the New Holland Memorial Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free, and the event will be held rain or shine.
