Poole Forge Sets Dedication Ceremony BY FRANCINE FULTON
Bruce Gregory, director of Tel Hai Camp and Participants in the 2020 Turkey Bowl included (from left) Retreat, and the turkey mascot are looking Christen Goske of Downingtown and Kelee and Joanne Lepage forward to this year’s Turkey Bowl. of Honey Brook.
Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon, will have a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony on Friday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. for the recently acquired hammerhead that was originally used in the operation of the forge from 1786 through 1859. Local historian and board president William Shirk acquired the
hammer from the Berks County Historical Society, which purchased the item in 1934 from a blacksmithing shop in Honey Brook. Shirk spent the summer creating an educational display for the hammer. “When we acquired this hammerhead, we decided to make it interpretive, so people could understand how it was used,” said Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. Tel Hai Camp To Host Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl BY FRANCINE FULTON
fter a modified Turkey Bowl was held last Thanksgiving at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook, the traditional event, featuring a 5K race and a 1-mile children’s run, will return on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 25. Last year, the 5K race was run with staggered start times that took place every 20 minutes. Chip timing was used to record the runners start and finish times. To accommodate the multiple 5K start times, the 1-mile children’s run was not held. Bruce Gregory, camp director, said organizers wanted to hold a live Turkey Bowl in 2020 rather than a virtual event. “Last year we had 223 total participants and we had 197 finishers in the 5K race,” he stated. “Many (participants) commented that they appreciated being able to do a race in person instead of virtually. Second Wind Race Timing, our chip timing company, helped us with a modified version so we could do the race in person.” The 5K race this year will again take runners through the camp and around the lake. The course includes paved, gravel and grassy
“This is the 30th year for the race and we are looking forward to another great year.” Registration and race packet pickup will be held from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. on Nov. 25 in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run will begin at 9:10 a.m., followed by the 5K race at 9:40 a.m. All children who complete the fun run will receive a finisher’s medal. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K. Medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups. To register, visit www.telhai camp.org/events/turkey-bowl-run. Online registration will end on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Participants
may also print a registration form from the website and mail it to the camp, along with the registration fee. As in previous years, all participants at the Turkey Bowl will be cheered on by the Tel Hai turkey mascot. “This is the 30th year for the race and we are looking forward to another great year,” Gregory stated. The Thanksgiving Day run was started in 1992 by former camp program director Buzz Tyson, who is now director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by local businesses, which are listed at the event website. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or contact Gregory at 610-273-3969 or bruce@ telhaicamp.org. More information is also available at www.facebook .com/TelHaiCampRetreat.

LET’S GET SOCIAL Jennifer Sensenig (left) and Andrea Kauffman are helping to coordinate the Operation Christmas Child drop-off center at Petra.
Kauffman noted there are some specific items that should not be included in shoeboxes. “No liquids, no toothpaste, no candy, no toy weapons,” she stated. “What we say is to really think through what people will use.” Kauffman recommended a T-shirt, a soccer ball and pump, flashlights and head lamps with batteries, and string bags. Sensenig noted people should think broadly when participating in the program. “When you pack the shoebox , you want to have in mind that you’re packing something special for the child that receives the box, but most of the time they will be distributing (items), so think outside of the one child because you are impacting that whole family.” Children who receive shoeboxes may choose to enroll in The Greatest Journey, a 12-

In 2020, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more tan 7.8 million shoeboxes in the United States to be sent to local partners around the world. The shoeboxes, which are filled with school supplies, hygiene items, and small toys, are sent to children in areas affected by natural disasters, famine, disease, war, or poverty. Since 2012, Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, has been a drop-off center for boxes collected by individuals, families, churches, and other local groups. “ We collect 3,600 and 4,000 as an average,” said Petra representative Andrea Kauffman, who noted that Marilyn Coles oversees the Operation Christmas Child drop-off center at Petra and takes boxes to Baltimore to be processed after they are collected. “(Coles) will take a group of about 10 (volunteers) to Baltimore to do processing,” ex plained Kauffman. Information about how to pack a shoebox may be found at www.samaritans purse.org. “There’s a whole lot of resources (there),” said Petra representative Jenny Sensenig. Actual shoeboxes or plastic boxes with snap-on lids may be used.

From Vietnam To Lancaster
Mike Caimi of the Liberty War Bird Association stands in front of the Huey helicopter the organization restored.
Mike Caimi has always looked up to Vietnam War helicopter pilots. “They were kinda my heroes,” said Caimi, who admired the young American men for their ability to fly helicopters through the jungles of Southeast Asia. As an adult, he became friends with Jim Haga, a Vietnam Huey pilot who served two tours during the war. “We were talking about restoring a helicopter and getting it out in front of Vietnam veterans,” said Caimi, who worked with Haga and others to form the Liberty War Bird Association, which Caimi now
serves as president. In 2015, the organization began to realize Caimi and Haga’s dream when a helicopter, which was discovered in California, made the journey to a hangar in Lititz where it will be used as a “ flying museum.”
During the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s Wheels and Wings Festival held at the Lancaster Airport in July, Caimi quickly recounted the history of the Huey before the chopper returned and its thundering sounds drowned out his See Helicopter pg 8 711 E. Main St Ephrata, PA 17522

Tips Offered For Destressing At Work Everyone has moments when work feels stressful and overwhelming. Diana Hendel, Doctor of Pharmacy and coauthor along with Dr. Mark Goulston of “Why Cope When You Can Heal?: How Healthcare Heroes of COVID-19 Can Recover From PTSD,” noted that workers need an action plan for handling those difficult moments. “ Why Cope When You Can Heal?” shares therapeutic approaches that are currently used to treat traumatic stress and introduces exercises to help people through difficulties. Hendel and Goulston recently offered some of these strategies for combating stress at work. Take a few minutes to get grounded. Grounding focuses on the present and can by used when one feels carried away by anxious thoughts or feelings or triggered by upsetting memories and flashbacks. To begin, one should find a comfortable place to sit or stand, and if sitting, rest their hands on their legs. They

should be aware of the sights, sounds, textures and scents around them. They can bring awareness to their body by performing stretches or tensing and relaxing muscles. They can tell themselves, “The flashback or emotion I felt is in the past. Right now, in this moment, I’m safe.” Harness the power of deep breathing. Slowly exhale through the mouth while focusing on clearing all the oxygen from the lungs. Inhale slowly and deeply through the nose for four slow counts. Hold the breath for four more slow counts. On the next four counts, exhale again through the mouth until the lungs are empty. Hold the breath again for four slow counts. People can also carry a small reminder of something they love about their life and focus on it if they feel triggered and need to center themselves. The item might be a photo of one’s children or pet, a special necklace or something else. The person should think of the gratitude they feel for their life whenever they look at this token. They can also grab a human lifeline. Workers should make sure there’s at least one person they can reach out to when feeling stressed. Some workplaces have a formal support group to help workers deal with stress, but employees can also start their own informal group that might meet regularly or be available when a member needs support. People can also reach out to their company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or contact a mental health professional. Hendel encourages employees to let their feelings out when possible. One can briefly move to a different room to cry or discreetly express pent-up feelings. They could also get out of the building for a few minutes to take deep breaths, stretch the arms and legs and enjoy nature. Co-workers might take a short walk together. Another stress relief tactic is to play a mind game. Goulston noted that one can picture someone who loves them and speak to that person, imagining the person is providing encouragement. Hendel warned against bottling up one’s emotions because they will likely reappear, sometimes with greater intensity.

Contact lenses can be safe and effective in helping people see more clearly. However, when used improperly, they can cause serious eye and vision problems, including corneal ulcers and potentially blinding infections. Prevent Blindness shares ways for people to protect their eyes through proper contact lens care. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates all contact lenses as prescription medical devices. It is illegal for anyone to sell contact lenses without a prescription from an eye care professional. The FDA reminds the public that consumers need a prescription for all contact lenses, including decorative or cosmetic contacts, even if the user has perfect vision. Improper contact lens use can put people at risk of contracting keratitis, a painful eye infection, or acanthamoeba keratitis, a severe, painful infection of the cornea. The two biggest risk factors for acanthamoeba keratitisare are poor lens hygiene and exposure to water while wearing lenses. In the most extreme cases, a corneal transplant is necessary. The best way to avoid eye infections is to follow proper lens care guidelines as prescribed by an eye care professional. Prevent Blindness offered several tips for safe contact lens care. Before handling contact lenses, hands should be washed with soap and water, then
Poole Forge from pg 1 The hammerhead can be viewed near the original forge site along with two other intact hammerheads. Scheduled to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony are Caernarvon Township supervisors, members of the Berks County Historical Society and the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and state Rep. Dave Zimmerman. Light refreshments will follow the ceremony in the Ironmaster’s Mansion. According to a document provided by Ekdahl that explains how the forge operated, one of the main purposes of a working iron forge in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was to draw out the raw pig iron ingots received from local furnaces into bar iron that could be sent to blacksmiths who could transform them into wrought iron products. This involved heating the ingots and then hammering them to stretch the ingots into bars. Since the pig iron ingots were very large - several feet in length and weighing hundreds of pounds - the hammers also had to be very large. The hammerheads alone weighed nearly 500 pounds. The hammer assembly was powered by a waterwheel, and cams on the wheel lifted the hammer up and allowed it to fall back down onto the anvil below. By placing the ingots or bar iron between the hammer and anvil, forge workers could refine and shape the metal into more workable forms for blacksmiths to use. “Imagine the sound it would have made. There were
rinsed and dried with a lintfree towel. Contact with water should be minimized, including removing lenses before going swimming or getting into a hot tub. Contact lenses should not be rinsed with or stored in either tap water or sterile water. Contact lenses should be worn and replaced according to the schedule prescribed by an eye care professional. During cleaning, using fresh solution, contact lenses should be rubbed with the fingers, then rinsed with solution before being soaked - even if the solution being used is a “no-rub” variety. Contact lens cases should always be cleaned with fresh solution, not water. The empty case should be left open to air dry. Lenses should never be put in the mouth, and saliva should never be put on lenses as saliva is not sterile. Lenses should never be shared with others. Contact lens wearers should not reuse old solution or top off the solution in their lens case. Cracked or damaged lens cases should not be used. Lens cases can be a source of contamination and infection. If any eye or vision problems are experienced, the contact lenses should be removed, and an eye care professional should be contacted immediately. For more information on contact lens safety, visit https://preventblindness.org /wearing-contact-lenses/.
