St. Mary of Providence to host tours, Cookies with Santa

Aweekend of holiday activities will take place at St. Mary of Providence Center, 227 Isabella Road, Elverson, on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15.

Events will begin on Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with guided tours of the historic Potts Mansion, which will be decorated in a Victorian theme by local designers and artists.

The mansion is known as Langoma, which is a Native American term that means “homestead.” The mansion features 76 rooms, 22 fireplaces and numerous architectural highlights such as Tiffany stained-glass windows, “floating” staircases and woodwork detailing.

Construction of the mansion was started in 1890 by Joseph Potts,

Capture the spirit of the season at local holiday events

Known as the “most wonderful time of the year,” the Christmas season provides an opportunity for community members to attend a festive array of holiday programs and activities.

The Caernarvon Township Parks and Recreation Committee is offering a Christmas Village for children in Friendship Park, 3287 North St., Morgantown. Santa’s Village, which opened on Dec. 7 during the township’s Christmas tree-lighting event, consists of a series of small playhouses that children may

visit any time during the holiday season. Each of the playhouses has a different theme, and each one contains a small gift for children. According to Erin McMullen, a member of

HBCL to continue to offer services while under construction

Those who have driven past the Honey Brook Community Library (HBCL) lately may have noticed the huge construction project that is currently underway. Because of the work being done, the library will be temporarily closed to the public for in-person visits until mid-January 2025.

However, curbside pickup will be available on select days and hours, subject to the construction

schedule. For the latest updates on curbside pickup, library patrons may visit www.honeybrook library.org or search for “Honey Brook Community Library” on Facebook. The Facebook page also contains drone images of the construction’s progress.

Community members are encouraged to download the ChesCo Library System app on their smartphones, which offers a convenient way for patrons to place holds on books and other

WCR Center wins award

The WCR Center for the Arts, formerly the Women’s Club of Reading, has been awarded the 2024 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Award for Leadership in Public Impact. This accolade, from Preservation Pennsylvania, recognizes the WCR Center for the Arts excellence in using a historic building to enrich the community. WCR board of directors president Jayme Rhoads and board vice president Jane Runyeon accepted the award on behalf of the nonprofit at the Preservation Pennsylvania 2024 Historic Preservation awards ceremony, which took place on Sept. 26 at the Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg. The 2024 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards recognize outstanding contributions to preserving Pennsylvania’s heritage.

Located at 140 N. Fifth St. in Reading’s historic Callowhill District, the WCR Center for the Arts has transformed its 19th-century building into a community hub. Originally the city’s first post office and later the Women’s Club of Reading, the WCR now serves as a performance and exhibition venue, fostering artistic exploration and community engagement. The WCR’s initiatives include arts education for low-income to moderate-income families and partnerships with local nonprofits. The 265-seat auditorium draws artists and audiences from across the nation.

In 2023, the WCR completed an accessibility project to ensure that the historic site is open to all, regardless of mobility challenges.

High school juniors who are interested in public service, policy, and the legislative process are invited to apply for state Sen. Carolyn Comitta’s third annual Student Advisory Council. The purpose of the council is to bring together students from across Chester County to learn about the roles and responsibilities within a state senate office as well as to gather youth perspectives on issues facing communities in Chester County and across the commonwealth.

Council members must live in the 19th Senatorial District and are expected to be available for a weekly

meeting every Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. from Jan. 29, 2025, through the beginning of April.

Students may apply at www.pasenatorcomitta .com/studentadvisorycoun cil2025. Applications are

materials. On designated curbside pickup days, HBCL patrons can collect their reserved items in a drive-up format from their cars. When arriving, patrons are asked to call the library at 610-273-3303, and a staff member will bring the items out.

Library director Jennifer Spade said that the app allows people to search for items they may be interested in borrowing while the library is closed to the public. “You can search by subject or by author or by exact title, and it will bring items up that are available throughout the county, and it will give you an option to place a hold,” she explained. “The hold can be sent to another library that is open, or you can select (HBCL). We are only here with very limited hours, so you can decide where you want your hold to go.” Spade noted that anyone who holds an HBCL library card can use it at any library in the Chester County Library System (CCLS). “If you have a Honey Brook Library card, (the app) will default to Honey Brook. But if the hours we are available don’t work, there is a dropdown menu, and you can switch to Parkesburg or Atglen and it will be sent there,” she noted.

The “hold” service is offered year-round to CCLS patrons. “It’s a fantastic service, and it’s free,” noted Spade. “It usually takes two or three days from the time you place your hold (for the item to arrive at a library).”

Library staff members and volunteers are currently unable to occupy the building full time during the renovation. “First, we have demo going on, and we have no (indoor) bathrooms,” said Spade. “Staff is only allowed to work for threehour increments. Plus we don’t want to be in the way of the workmen.”

Upon completion, the project, which will nearly double the building’s space, will include new and improved areas, including a community room, a dedicated children and young adult wing, an adult reading room with a section for local history and expanded areas for books and materials.

“Phase 1 is finished, (and that included) the addition. Phase 2 is

the remodeling,” Spade explained, noting that there were some weather delays during the project, as well as a Thanksgiving break. “Right now, Phase 2 is slated to be done mid-January - around Jan. 20. We have four to five weeks of work left to be done, but with the Christmas holiday, work won’t be done between Christmas and New Year’s. So it pushes (work) back a bit.”

“Hopefully, we won’t have snow,” she added. “Our contractors are from different parts of the (state). As long as the weather holds up, they will be here.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house will take place sometime in February 2025.

Due to unforeseen costs and with the expansion nearing completion, the library is seeking additional funds. Residents are encouraged to contribute to the library’s capital campaign by donating to the “Leave a Legacy” program on the capital campaign donor tree, a wall-mounted donor recognition tree that will be displayed in the lobby. The tree recognizes patrons who contribute a set donation. Various colored leaves that correspond to the level of contribution are currently available to purchase, as well as acorns and doves for larger donors. People can write “in memory of,” or businesses can write their names on the leaves. Donations can be made at www.honeybrooklibrary .org by clicking the “Capital Campaign” button.

“One patron shared his heartfelt testimony about contributing to the donor tree in memory of his wife, a devoted library fan,” added Spade. “He believes this tribute would have made her happy, and (he) takes comfort in knowing that her name will be remembered by many.”

The Honey Brook Community Library is located at 687 Compass Road, (Route 10), Honey Brook. For more information about the project or to donate, contact Spade at 610-273-3303 or jspade@ ccls.org.

Although rainy weather did deter some runners and walkers from taking part in the 33rd annual Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp & Retreat, organizers were still pleased with the numbers.

“We had 373 finishers in the 5K race (and) 46 finishers in the 1-mile children’s fun run,” reported Bruce Gregory, camp director. “They all did a great job in their race - even the real young ones who pushed through to the finish line.”

The top overall male winner of the 5K was Frankie Disilvestro, 18, of Honey Brook, with a time of 16 minutes and 42 seconds. “That was almost a one minute faster than last year’s winner,” Gregory said.

The top overall female 5K winner was Laura Posh, 20, of Morgantown, with a time of 20:33.

The top overall male finisher in the 1-mile children’s fun run was David Petersheim, 11, of Paradise, with a time of 6:16.

Anneke Kabot, 11, from Midland Park, N.J., was the top overall female finisher in the 1-mile event with a

time of 7:31.

“As always, a number of parents and grandparents ran alongside the young ones encouraging them on,” said Gregory.

He added that those who attended the Turkey Bowl included first-time participants as well as those who attend the event annually.

“We thank all who braved the weather and came out to support the race,” said Gregory. “We are grateful to all of those who have made this a family tradition. We also saw many new runners this year.”

About 40 volunteers helped out at the Turkey

Bowl, and more than 22 local businesses and individuals sponsored or donated to the race.

whose family members were local ironmasters. Joseph’s great-great-grandfather was John Potts, the founder of Pottstown.

Today, the facility is operated by the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence. It functions as a retreat facility year-round for people of all religious denominations. In addition to the religious retreat center, the site includes several buildings that house senior citizens.

Volunteers have been busy decorating the mansion for the upcoming Christmas tours, with a goal of making the mansion look as it did in the early 1900s. Visitors will be able to view fresh and artificial Christmas trees, Nativity scenes, candles, greenery and other festive decorations.

Decorated areas on two floors of the mansion will include the ballroom; the east and west staircases; the east and west foyers; and the bedroom of Mrs. Potts, which has recently been restored and refurbished. “Mrs. Potts’ room was renovated to the Victorian period. It is styled now with period furniture,” said volunteer Liz Oulton, who is helping to organize the events along with Sister Brenda McHugh, site director.

There will also be an opportunity for tourgoers to win gift baskets donated by local businesses, individuals and the senior citizens who reside at St. Mary’s. One of the baskets is coffee-themed, and it comes complete with coffee and a coffee maker. Names of the gift basket winners will be drawn after the last tour.

AgConnect announces restructuring

Chester County’s focus on the importance of agriculture and agriculture economic development has led to a strategic restructuring and partnership with the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC). AgConnect, the Next Generation Industry Partnership originally introduced and managed by the CCEDC, has broadened its scope to not only support agricultural producers across the region, but also to provide resources and educational opportunities to Chester County consumers.

A key part of the transition will see AgConnect leading the implementation of the Chester County Agricultural Economic Development Strategic Plan, aimed at fostering growth and sustainability in the county’s agricultural sector.

Since 1989, Chester County government has promoted the economic impact and excellence of the local farming industry through the Chester County Agricultural Development Council (Ag Council). The Ag Council ran sev-

eral agricultural programs, initiatives, and resources - such as connecting agricultural business owners with training and financing - as well as produced the annual “Chester County Farm Product Guide” and awarded both the Farmer of the Year and Distinguished Service to Agriculture awards. In 2022, based on a plan developed and recommended by the Ag Council, the county commissioners adopted an Agricultural Economic Development Strategic Plan.

The AgConnect restructuring will introduce a newly established AgConnect Advisory Executive Committee, designed to steer the initiative and set strategic priorities. The 11-person committee includes chairpersons from each of four action teams, three agriculture industry leaders appointed by the Chester County commissioners, three agriculture employers appointed by the CCEDC, and one staff member from the County Commissioners’ Office. This diverse and experienced committee will oversee the

development and execution of AgConnect’s workplan, ensuring alignment with the county’s strategic objectives. To address various aspects of agricultural development, four action teams have been formed. AgConnect Workforce Development focuses on regional agricultural workforce development; AgConnect Finance is dedicated to providing farm loan opportunities and financial support; AgConnect Chester County is tasked with implementing the Agricultural Economic Development Plan for the county; and AgConnect Promotions is responsible for promoting the agricultural industry, coordinating the Farm Guide, and organizing the Chester County Farmer of the Year ceremony.

AgConnect will keep the community updated on the progress of the initiative through its new website and social media platforms, as well as a monthly newsletter. Regular updates will provide insights into the actions being taken to realize the goals of the Agricultural Economic Development Strategic Plan.

Countywide open burn ban

During the week ending on Nov. 23, the Chester County Board of Commissioners approved Resolution BOC-57-24, extending the countywide open burn ban by 30 days. This measure was taken at the recommendation of the Chester County Department of Emergency

Services and the district forester, on behalf of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. All open burning is banned until Thursday, Dec. 26, unless the ban is rescinded prior to that date. The burn ban was extended due to the

serious threat to life and property the fire potential poses. The small amounts of rain the county had recently received were not enough to alleviate the risk of fire.

The prohibited activities include open burning of any combustible material outdoors in either a screened or unscreened burn barrel, in a fire ring, in a fire pit, or on the ground. Materials that may not be burned include garbage, leaves, grass, twigs, litter, paper, and vegetation from land that has been cleared.

Tree Tenders training planned

Penn State Extension will offer a Tree Tenders training webinar series on Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to Feb. 19, from noon to 1 p.m.

Through the Tree Tenders training program, developed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) in partnership with Penn State Extension Urban Foresters, people may gain the skills needed to restore and care for their community’s tree canopy. Individuals learn how to plant, prune, and maintain trees. Tree Tenders work to increase environmental health and sustainability, enhance green spaces, and increase tree cover in neighborhoods across Pennsylvania.

Since 1993, PHS has trained thousands of Tree Tenders in more than 200 neighborhoods across Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has supported the program since 2004. In 2008, the program expanded to Pittsburgh and smaller metropolitan areas, and by 2013, it became available statewide. Since then, thousands more have been trained throughout Pennsylvania and beyond.

PLACE AN AD

Each participant will receive a printed copy of the Tree Tenders Handbook, published by PHS.

To register by Friday, Jan. 3, visit https://extension .psu.edu/ and search for “Tree Tenders Training.”

Focusing on youth engagement, public trust, and recruitment, the Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has stepped up its community policing efforts, including presence at more community events and the creation of public interaction events like Cupcakes with a Cop and Barbershop Conversations. In addition to the Cupcakes with a Cop program, held in partnership with Dia Doce Cupcakes and the West Chester Police Department, and Barbershop Conversations, held with Another Level Barbershop, CCSO deputies and staff members have

created youth-focused initiatives. Benching with Badges invites student-athletes throughout the county to join deputies in fitness activities to encourage physical wellness and camaraderie. A CCSO student art competition engaged young students, with winners’ artwork set to be displayed on CCSO walls. The CCSO recently took part in the Chester County Student and Law Enforcement Symposium, which prioritizes informal, candid conversations with high school students, aimed at mitigating negative stereotypes centered around the relationship between youths and

law enforcement. The CCSO has also expanded its digital reach, launching Instagram and X pages in addition to its Facebook presence.

Public education is another priority of the CCSO. This focus includes co-hosting events like the Gun Safety Seminar with the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, and a Gun Violence Prevention

Webinar alongside state Rep. Chris Pielli and CeaseFirePA. Two pilot programs are also in the planning stages: Shear Hope is a domestic violence prevention program aimed at providing domestic violence education and resources to survivors, and a Digital Footprints seminar will aim to help students and parents protect their online presence.
