Manheim Township

For MT marching band, it’s

Twenty-four seniors, 16 juniors, 21 sophomores, 22 freshmen and four eighth-graders. Sixty-eight musicians, 13 members of the color guard and six support members. Thirty-five leaders, including drum majors Lily Babione and Cameron Bibich.

But who are these 87 members of the Manheim Township (MT) marching band, really?

“Band programs don’t just happen,” said Scott Siegel, the director of MT’s marching band. “There are certain kinds of kids and families drawn to the band program. They tend to be kids who have learned patience and persistence. I’ve got some of the

highest academic achievers in the building. They are also involved in all manners of other activities.

They’re very active kids. They’re very involved kids and their families are very supportive, and they’re some of the nicest and most polite kids you’ll ever hang around with.”

The 13-week 2024 Manheim Township marching band season will formally step off this week.

After 12 days of practice at summer camp, the Blue Streaks will perform publicly for the first time on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. during the ensemble’s annual community night at the high school stadium, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster.

The following evening, Friday, Aug. 23, the band will present

its eight-minute field show at Cumberland Valley High School during the MT football team’s season-opening away contest.

“For me, the performances are checkpoints - ‘Are we learning? Are we progressing?’” said Siegel.

“For the kids, it’s about the adrenaline rush. If all you ever did was practice, how fun would that be? For parents, it’s when they get to see their kids (perform). That’s one of the ways parents stay connected.”

“What’s good about this band is that there’s a lot of teamwork,” said Cameron. “Everyone works on building each other up, not tearing each other down. We’re serious, but we have fun with it. We work on the show the whole year. But it’s not about the product;

Sure, it shares its name with another more well-known location. A lot of places do.

Oregon, an unincorporated village that played an important role in the development of Manheim Township, is named after an 1800s territory located

But regardless of their names, all of those places have their own unique history and settlement stories, just as Oregon does.

For humans, interaction and physical contact with some animals can be soothing, intriguing or even therapeutic. Count horses among that group of special animals.

The healing power of horses is the premise upon which Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) is founded.

“There is a unique bond that can be found with a horse,” said Stephanie Fleck, GMTRC’s

program director. “Science is starting to catch up and find out what horsemen have known for centuries. (Horses’) ability to read body language is higher than any other therapeutic animal. Horses can feel a human heartbeat from 4 feet away.”

“When you enter into a barn, you’re entering into that relationship,” continued Fleck. “If you come in with all this baggage, they pick up on that. That’s why equine therapy is so beneficial. You can’t lie to a horse.”

it’s about the process of what we do.”

The Blue Streaks’ marching band season will feature 10 football game performances and four noncompetitive Saturday showcase events, including Showcase in Sight and Sound, which it will host on Sept. 7. Special events during the season will include performances at the Ephrata Fair Parade near the end of September; a second community night at home on Tuesday, Oct. 22; and a season-ending showcase at McCaskey on Saturday, Oct. 26.

“For some of these (students), this is the hardest thing they’ve ever done,” said Siegel. “My goal is to

create a safe space where these students can be themselves and have no fear of making mistakes. My ultimate goal is to provide a space where they can flourish.”

The Blue Streaks marching band’s 2024 field show is titled “Color Our World.” It will feature tunes from iconic rock groups such as Chicago, Electric Light Orchestra, the Moody Blues and the Rolling Stones.

“Each year, we customize a show for the group we have and their talents,” said Siegel. “We’re trying to make sure the audience recognizes the show. We want the audience to get it.

We’re also trying to build a show that the students love to play and practice. We’re trying to pick music that is fun for them. The third consideration is what we have done before.”

“(Band) is both learning and an experience,” added

Siegel. “I want (the students) to be better people. I want them to discover who they are and what they are capable of. Growing people is kind of the product here. I couldn’t tell you the show we did a few years ago, but I remember the kids.”

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) advises the public that a smishing scam is being attempted. The scam aims to deceive people so they will share their personal financial information to settle outstanding toll amounts. The texts purport to be from Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services and center around urgent requests to settle unpaid tolls; the texts claim that the recipient will be charged an additional amount if an overdue balance is not paid. Similar scams have recently been reported by toll agencies across the country.

People who receive an unsolicited text, email, or similar message suggesting it is from the PTC or another toll agency should not click on the link. E-ZPass account holders and Toll By Plate customers can use approved safe methods to check their accounts such as the official PTC E-ZPass website or the PA Toll Pay app available from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store.

Those who receive a fraudulent text may file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. The site is dedicated to sharing information on internet crimes across law enforcement agencies.

Teaching values through investments

Faithward Advisors, a Lancaster-based financial firm, wants to help ensure that investments do more than just grow wealth. The company communicates values to the next generation by pioneering a movement that integrates faith-based principles into investment strategies.

A Pew Research survey found that 31% of parents reported religious values as one of the most important things they teach their children. In fact, teaching religious faith was ranked by parents as the third most important trait to pass on to future generations, only outranked by responsibility and hard work.

Faithward Advisors wants to help investors align their financial decisions with their Christian values. This approach can help secure a financial future and also

Located on 30 acres at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, GMTRC uses equine therapy to help at-risk individuals - folks with mental and physical disabilities, people with autism, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, inactive seniors, even some without a formal diagnosis. Through its lessons, programs and activities, GMTRC works with people from ages 4 to 80, both in one-on-one and in group settings. More than 200 people are served each year.

GMTRC volunteer Dorothy (right) leads a student on top of Bailey through a therapeutic exercise.

“There’s no way to replicate the movement of a horse, and it’s very beneficial and very therapeutic,” said Fleck. “People find the movement of a horse to be very calming. Our students may be able to connect with their equine partners in ways they can’t with human relationships. It’s having fun with your horse. It helps progress them in their everyday lives.”

GMTRC is home to 10 horses. Its facilities include an indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding arena and spaces to ride in nature. But some individuals also benefit from simply taking care of the horses.

tions, fundraising and grants, GMTRC began as Lancaster County Therapy Riding with seven students in 1981. In the beginning, the organization was operated entirely by volunteers.

“We’ve grown and grown over the years, and we’ve been able to add paid staff,” said Fleck. “We’re kind of poised for another growth period. We’re working hard to expand our services. Currently, our wait list is way too long. We’re looking at how to meet the needs of the community.”

serve as a moral legacy for future generations.

According to Bernie Bostwick, president of Faithward Advisors, the firm’s Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI) approach helps families to communicate their faith and values in a tangible way, through their financial choices, which can create a lasting impact on their children and grandchildren.

BRI involves screening processes to help ensure investments support companies that uphold family-friendly values, such as those promoting human dignity and environmental stewardship.

Faithward Advisors’ tailored BRI solutions offer a variety of investment options, each curated to meet stringent standards. For more information, visit www.FaithwardAdvisors. com or call 717-560-8300.

“We love and rely on our horses. They’re providing the services,” said Fleck. “A lot of people have heard of us, but they really don’t know what we do. If people come out, we find that they fall in love with it. We serve a broad scope of our community. Everybody knows someone who can benefit from our services.”

Supported by a pool of 150 volunteers, GMTRC employs 10 staff members, three of whom are full time. GMTRC staff members are trained, but they are not licensed therapists or counselors.

“We have a large demand for services,” said Fleck. “Our services are provided by trained and certified staff, but we are not licensed therapists. We work on horsemanship goals. Therapists would work on clinical goals. There is a distinction there.”

Oregon

in the northwest portion of the United States. Details of how it all came about remain a mystery, adding to Oregon’s intrigue and intrinsic charm.

“It’s passed on. It’s legend,” said Ben Webber, president of the Manheim Township Historical Society (MTHS). “A gentleman by the name of Henry Leman is credited with naming it. I don’t know if he had been to Oregon or had been reading about Oregon in the newspaper. I’m not sure why he suggested Oregon. I think it was just an inspiration of what was going on in the Oregon territory at the time.”

Perhaps to Leman, Oregon was simply more appealing than the name “Catfish,” which had been given to the northeast corner of Manheim Township by a captured British officer during the Revolutionary War. Before then,

the area had been formally established as Jacob Baer’s Mill, in honor of the man and the agricultural industry that had settled the land in the early 1700s, at a time when neither Lancaster County or Manheim Township had yet to be incorporated.

“It wasn’t just a mill; it became a gathering point for people to share information,” said Webber. “It was important for an agrarian community because the mill ground grain and turned it into food. Jacob Baer’s Mill was the birthplace of Manheim Township. The first roads built in Manheim Township were heading for Jacob Baer’s Mill because it was such an important part of the community.”

Today, Oregon is home to no more than 200 residents. Many local individuals are familiar with Oregon on an informal basis, aware of its presence and location

Makeci to present concert

Joel Makeci will perform in concert on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary at Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.

Hailing from Lancaster, Makeci is a Congolese American singer, songwriter, and bandleader whose journey took him

from refugee camps in Tanzania to stages across the United States. He performs a fusion of rock, rumba, and gospel accompanied by the eight-member New Generation Gospel Band.

Admission is free. For more information, visit https://apostlesucc.org/ concerts.

Academy to offer class

Patriot Academy’s Biblical Citizenship class will be offered on Mondays from Sept. 9 to Oct. 28 at two locations. Jim and Jean

because routes 722 and 272 pass through it.

“I love the fact that Oregon village is still very much intact,” said Webber. “I love the fact that you can still see some of the original buildings. You can see where the dams were, you can see the bridges, you can see the roads. Those are the kinds of things I love about Oregon.”

The post office that was operated in Oregon between 1846 and 1912 no longer exists. But the former Oregon Tavern and the former Oregon Community Church still do, in many ways still serving the roles they were originally intended for.

“In some of the old pictures (MTHS has, Oregon) looks like that today,” said Webber. “Some of the buildings have been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. There are other sleepy crossroads

in Lancaster County that time has forgotten. Oregon might be unique because 272 and 722 cut it in half. It’s a real gem. It really is.”

Although undocumented, some local evidence suggests Oregon may have been part of the Civil War-era Underground Railroad network that sheltered runaway slaves.

“I love the ‘Aha’ moments of history, like when the puzzle is being solved,” said Webber. “I love learning from others and getting new information. I find that it inspires me and helps me understand our community differently, our landscape differently. It’s wonderful to think about the history of our community and realize it wasn’t always the way it is now.”
