Ugly Sweater 5K has become part of Township cross-country culture

The popular Ugly Sweater 5K, hosted by the Manheim Township Cross Country Booster Club, is certainly one of the reasons for the Manheim Township School District’s cross-country success.

The Ugly Sweater 5K enjoys a solid history of support, it serves as the program’s only fundraiser, and it helps finance competitive

and social opportunities that enhance the student-athletes’ overall experience. But ultimately, it is the student-athletes who are responsible for their own personal successes.

“It’s truly a tight group of students who all get along and have fun while they’re competing,” said booster club vice president Brian Speizer of the current culture of the program. “I think that’s what makes the Ugly Sweater 5K and the teams successful. The kids

want to be there.”

The booster club will stage its 16th annual Ugly Sweater 5K Run/Walk and 1-mile fun run on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Landis Run Intermediate School, 25 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. The 5K will start at 10 a.m., and the fun run will commence at 10:35 a.m.

Advance registration is encouraged at www.lancastercoun tyxc5k.com prior to Thursday,

Dec. 5. Participants can also register in person for a higher fee on the day of the race, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three female and top three male finishers overall, as well as to the top finishers in each age category. The festivities will be topped off by light refreshments of soup, snacks and hot chocolate in the school’s cafeteria.

“It’s just a great community event where we try to promote running and the growth of the cross-country team,” said Speizer. “It’s a great event, and we have a lot of positive feedback. We try to tie it to the sport. Running is a sport that anyone can do; it’s a lifelong sport. You have a few individuals who are competitive and anxious about putting down a good time. Others are

Some things aren’t exactly what they seem to be.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church’s upcoming event is a Christmas bazaar masquerading as an art show.

“I think (the event’s atmosphere will) be a family vibe, whether you end up purchasing something or not,” said Jennifer Mattson, who’s been St. Thomas Episcopal Church’s pastor for seven years. “Each of these artists has a different way to see the world. It’s as much an art show as it is a bazaar. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon before Christmas. I hope that people would experience a different world.”

The church will present its inaugural Christmas Art Show and Craft and Food Market from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, within the church’s sanctuary at 301 Saint Thomas Road, Lancaster. The fundraising event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.

“One of the members of our congregation, Gary Davis, wanted to do something for the church,” said Mattson. “So he

Church to dedicate new sanctuary

On the weekend after Thanksgiving, the congregation of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Lititz will dedicate its newly renovated sanctuary. After the church’s founding in 1904, the congregation began worshipping in rented rooms in Lancaster until the completion of its first church building, located at Plum and Clay streets, in 1906. As membership grew, the decision was made to move to Lititz, and the current facility was completed in 1993. The original plan was to utilize a multipurpose room for worship and add a permanent sanctuary at some point in the future. That plan never materialized, so the decision was made in 2023 to refinish the multipurpose room as a permanent sanctuary and complete needed renovations of the building.

The new sanctuary has been turned 90 degrees on its original footprint to face east, with the arrangement of the organ, pews, baptismal font and altar designed to guide the eye toward the cross suspended above the altar. The original brass cross is now fitted into a custom-made wooden frame that better fits the space. Many local contractors, architects, designers, and craftsmen contributed to this project, managed by Arthur Funk & Sons Inc. of Lebanon. New HVAC systems were installed by Clark Inc., wooden pews were crafted by Miller Church

Interiors of New Holland, kneeler cushions were fabricated by Stump’s Upholstery Design, and the pipe organ was refurbished by Brunner & Associates, to name a few.

The Rev. Christopher Seifferlein, pastor of the congregation since October 2019, and the English District bishop, the Rev. Jeffrey Miskus, will lead a service of dedication on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m. An additional service and celebration will take place on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Mount Calvary Lutheran Church is part of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, a biblical and liturgical church body. The mission statement of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church is “Confessing Christ in Word and Sacrament.”

The church is located at 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz. Worship services are held on Sundays at 9 a.m. followed by Sunday school and an adult Bible class at 10:30 a.m. For more information, visit www.lancaster lutheran.com.

There were 12 award categories, with the Rising Star Award honoring emerging leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry who demonstrate ongoing exceptional growth, notable industry involvement and strong leadership. The award was presented to Trendler and Yeager during a special Awards Gala where the 11 other award winners were announced in various categories. Other members of the Decades team who attended the Awards Gala were Tony Gorick, sales and marketing manager, and Zach Fortunato, general manager.

Nominations sought for heater giveaway

An individual or family in need in Pennsylvania will receive a new heating system this winter during the Gift of Warmth Annual Heater Giveaway sponsored by Andreas Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning.

Each winter, millions of people in the United States face life challenges and cannot afford to heat their homes or replace failing heating systems. Not having an operational heating system poses a significant safety concern during the extreme cold.

Community members are invited to nominate someone to win a heater. People may write a short essay or make a short

video nominating anyone who is experiencing tough financial times, an illness in the family and multiple medical bills, or a job loss. A senior on a fixed income, a U.S. veteran, or a single parent caring for children are also eligible. A nominee must be a legal adult, a Pennsylvania resident, and a homeowner. People may not nominate themselves. A winner will be selected and notified on or before Monday, Dec. 9. For more information and to submit a nomination by Sunday, Dec. 1, visit https://andreas plumbing.com/gift-of -warmth/. Details are also available by calling 610-377-5261.

Scouts attend camping event

The Susquehanna District of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Scouts BSA, held a Fall Outpost campout from Oct. 18 to 20 at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation in Newmanstown. The weekend included events or stations throughout the day on Saturday, with a campfire program that evening. Stations

were set up and run by the Scouts BSA units, and the Cub Scouts spent the day going from station to station, with a break for lunch. Close to 500 boys, girls, and adults participated in the event.

Stations were geared toward advancement for the Cub Scouts. The stations included fishing, a

fitness course, shooting BB guns, making small boats and racing them, kickball, crafts, fire building, and cooking. Cub Scouts could come just for the day Saturday or spend the night, which most did. They practiced setting up their own tent and helped to cook their evening meal. With most Cub packs heavily

recruiting new Scouts at the beginning of the school year, the event gave members a chance to get outside with their pack and get to know each other. The older youths also had opportunities to demonstrate leadership by running the stations for the younger Cub Scouts.

just running for fun.”

Runners and participants will navigate a 3.1-mile “over the river and through the woods” course in and around the Manheim Township campus, modified to include a portion of the high school’s varsity course and holiday decorations. Ugly sweaters are optional but very popular.

“The sweaters bring a bit of creativity to the event,” said Speizer. “You’ll see them from all over the map. Some are purchased and some are homemade. They bring another level of excitement. They’re also great conversation starters. It’s entertaining to see what’s being worn out there.”

Nearly 300 runners are expected to participate, and the booster club is hoping to raise $10,000 from the Ugly Sweater 5K. Currently, there are about 125 Manheim Township students in grades seven through 12 involved with the Blue Streaks’ cross-country program.

“One hundred percent of the money goes toward supporting the cross-country kids, for things like entry fees to invitationals, snacks, equipment, T-shirts, financial support and team recognition,” said

Speizer. “It provides opportunities for team-building activities. It also covers the athletes’ banquet at the end of the season.”

This fall, both the Blue Streaks boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams went undefeated during the regular season and captured team titles at the Lancaster-Lebanon League and District Three Class AAA championships. The Blue Streak boys finished sixth as a team at the PIAA Class AAA meet in Hershey on Nov. 2, while the Township girls came in seventh at states.

Manheim Township runners who brought home individual medals from the state competition were Adam Kingston, a senior who finished seventh; Elena Barrall, a freshman who came in 20th; and Cole Stevens, a senior who finished 21st.

“Their performance this year was phenomenal,” said Speizer. “How we define success is making states. There’s no doubt that the program has been incredibly successful over the last few years. You have to continue to improve, and the kids work hard; they’re committed to working through the summer. The effort you put into it is the result you get out of it.”

The evening program was presented by the Scouts BSA units and Cub packs. It included skits, songs, and other presentations, with a campfire as a backdrop. After the campfire, Cubs headed back to their campsite for a cracker barrel.

The Susquehanna District covers Columbia, Conestoga Valley, Eastern Lancaster County, Hempfield, Lampeter-Strasburg, Lancaster, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Pequea Valley, and Solanco school

districts.

Boy Scouts of America programs are divided by age and activity: Cub Scouting is for boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade, Scouts BSA is open to young men and young women in grades six through 12, and coed Venturing and Sea Scouting are available for young men and young women ages 14 through 20. For more information, visit www. beascout.org or contact the local Scout office at 717-394-4063.

Art

donated 150 framed original drawings, and his only request was that it benefit our outreach program. We realized there were other folks in the congregation who had different gifts, so we came up with this idea. We are so excited to showcase the work of so many talented artists.”

“It will be a place where you can experience and see love in action,” Mattson continued. “I think all art is an expression of that creative spirit. Art is a way of God saying to us, ‘There’s something beautiful here.’”

In addition to Davis’ drawings of nature, scenery and religious-themed topics, 10 additional vendors, artists and congregation members will make their creative works available for purchase, including Three Creek Boutique clothing, Anne Kempsell’s hand-stitched bags and

Riad Mitri’s hand-carved Bethlehem olive wood. CDs featuring original Christmas music by Maria Corley will also be for sale. Some of the other items that will be highlighted include Christmas ornaments; jewelry like necklaces, prayer bracelets and earrings; knitted items; soups; and cookies.

The event’s ambiance will be augmented by Christmas music, as well as free spiced cider and hot chocolate.

“For me, my favorite part is the love and joy I see in Gary, who’s doing this to help others,” said Mattson.

“It’s a beautiful thing to celebrate the joy of giving and giving back. The Christmas season is about the inbreeding of God’s love into this world. It shows that God has a sense of our goodness. The Christmas season is about hope and receiving this light into this world.”

Organizers of the

church’s original foray into the holiday season fundraising world hope the event will produce more than 100 attendees and nearly $10,000 in proceeds.

Half of the funds raised by the event will benefit the church’s outreach ministry, and the other half will go toward the church’s general upkeep and maintenance.

Established in 1967, St. Thomas Episcopal Church has a role in the community today that is based on the work of its 125 active

members.

“Our mission is love,” said Mattson. “It’s following the way of love as modeled by Jesus Christ. It was founded as a mission church, and there was love from the beginning. The congregation grew and thrived, and they were able to build the sanctuary where we are currently located.”

Students and professionals to present “The Nutcracker”

Seventy-four students from Lancaster County and beyond will join professional dancers from around the world on stage in five performances of “The Nutcracker” ballet from Friday to Sunday, Dec. 6 to 8. Viktor Yeliohin directs the production, which will be presented at Lancaster Mennonite High School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. A special performance for local students will take place in the morning on Dec. 6, and the production will open to the public at 6:30 p.m. Two shows will follow on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 and 6 p.m., with a final matinee on Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.

Tchaikovsky’s ”Nutcracker” dates back to 1892 when it was performed for the first time the week before Christmas in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet then traveled to

England in 1934 followed by the United States in 1944; 2024 marks 80 years since the production came to the U.S. In addition, Yeliohin is celebrating his 30th year directing the show in Lancaster. His students have been preparing for the performances for more than seven months.

“The Nutcracker” follows Clara’s magical Christmas journey through the Land of Sweets and beyond. This year, Gianna Fasano from Lampeter-Strasburg School District and Maggie O’Connor from the School District of Lancaster will star as Clara. This year marks Fasano’s 11th year and O’Connor’s ninth year in the show.

CASA raises funds at movie day

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties hosted its second annual family movie day at Penn Cinema in Lititz on Oct. 12. CASA’s movie day featured the newly released family adventure film “The Wild Robot.” The event was free and open to the community. It quickly outsold the original theater, so a larger theater was requested. The new theater quickly sold out as well.

CASA provided popcorn and water to attendees. In addition, an introduction to CASA’s advocacy program was shown prior to the movie.

Lancaster County Motors Subaru sponsored the movie showing.

CASA’s mission is to provide a qualified and compassionate court-appointed volunteer advocate to every

child who is abused and neglected to ensure he or she has a safe, nurturing,

Exploring the world of pincushions

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host an event focusing on Amish and Mennonite pincushions on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. at its Collections Feature program. Mennonite Life curator Emily Immel will share research and insight into the significance of the collection.

A light reception and time for holiday shopping will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the retail area of the Collections Building. The exhibit will remain available for viewing with the purchase of a Mennonite Life Museum ticket on Friday, Dec. 6.

For generations, Amish and Mennonite women have used needlework as an outlet for artistic expression and a way to channel creativity into the domestic sphere. The pincushions in the Mennonite Life collection are colorful, detailed, elaborately patterned works of art. The Collections Feature will explore the rich history and cultural significance of the craft.

Mennonite Life members receive complimentary admission. Those interested in general admission may reserve a ticket at www.mennonitelife.org/ events.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures and histories.

Mennonite Life curator Emily Immel will share research and insight into Amish and Mennonite pincushions.
