Playing “Base Ball”
The Way It Used To Be
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Brandywine Base Ball Club, which is dedicated to preserving the history of baseball as it was played (and spelled) in 1864, is currently seeking players for its upcoming season, as well as spectators who are invited to attend games free of charge. The team, which formed in 2013, is celebrating its 10th year of competing with other vintage clubs locally at its home field in West Chester, throughout Pennsylvania and in other states.
Vintage baseball has unique rules. Players do not wear gloves, and only one baseball is used during the entire game. The games have only one umpire, and all pitching is underhand.
“We play with people of all ages and different abilities and backgrounds. Barehand is an equalizer,” said Rick Stratton, the team’s marketing manager. “There are people who have never played competitive baseball and they end up doing quite well.”
He explained that teams follow the rules and customs established in 1864 by dressing in historically similar attire and using period-appropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls made exclusively for vintage play, which are slightly bigger and softer than a modern baseball.
Team members do wear cleats, but all modern-day logos are covered with black tape.
“We sometimes do play other
versions of the game as the rules (of baseball) progressed,” Stratton said.
“There is a version of the game that uses 1865 rules. That’s when things started to switch. You can no longer catch the ball on one bounce; you had to catch it on the fly, but still barehanded. We (do this) to teach spectators the evolution of the game.”
Which version of baseball is being played is discussed in advance with the opposing team.
“Last year, when we traveled to Rhode Island, we played a game with 1880 rules,” Stratton shared.
“The pitching was overhand. Only the catcher wore a glove, but everyone else was barehand and you had to catch balls on the fly.”
Team players are asked to pay a

people or landscapes. “This is such a farming community. It seemed wrong to not add the agriculture category,” said Chotty Sprenkle, contest coordinator.
The other categories are Wildlife - plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and fungi (no domestic animals); Landscapes - sites, scenery and historic buildings; and Trailcam - photographs captured on remote cameras.
Sprenkle hopes that adding Agriculture will be a better fit for some photos. “One (photo last year) that came in was (a person) picking tomatoes off the vine. It was absolutely beautiful and depicted what the watershed is all about,” she said. “We put it in Landscapes, which didn’t seem right. (The new category) will be a better fit for a lot of entries.”
Other changes this year are that photographers will be asked to submit hard copies for judging, rather than emailing photos, which was done during the pandemic, and that photos can measure 8.5 by 11 inches or larger. “People who entered said that when we had the 8
by 10 rule, it would cut off their photographs. You want the full image; you don’t want to have to crop it,” said Sprenkle.
All photographs must be taken within the Octoraro Watershed, which includes Cecil County, Md., as well as the following townships in Pennsylvania: Eden, Bart, Sadsbury (in both Lancaster and Chester counties), Colerain, West Sadsbury, Highland, West Fallowfield, Upper Oxford, Lower Oxford, East Nottingham, Little Britain, Fulton, East Drumore and West Nottingham.
Entries will be judged in three age categories: Adult, age 18 and above; Youth, ages 13 to 17; and Youth 2, age 12 and under. Monetary prizes and ribbons will be awarded to first-, secondand third-place winners in all categories. There will also be a Best of Show winner and a People’s Choice award.
Entries will be accepted at the OWA office, located inside the West Fallowfield Township Building, 3095 Limestone Road, Suite 7, Cochranville, on Monday and Tuesday, March 13 and 14, between 6 and 8 p.m. Those who are unable to drop off their entries on those dates may contact Sprenkle to make alternate arrangements.
This year, the photographs will be judged by a professional photographer. All entries will be displayed, and the winners will be rec-

PennDOT urges motorists to avoid travel, if possible, when snowy and icy conditions arise. If travel is necessary, motorists should use caution, reduce speeds, and be aware of changing weather conditions.
To help make decisions regarding winter travel, motorists are encouraged to “Know Before You Go” by checking conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com.
511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. Users can also see the status of plow trucks and travel alerts along a specific route using the “Check My Route” tool.
511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts.
Drivers should prepare or restock their emergency kits with items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger, and a small snow shovel. Motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families have, such as baby supplies, extra medication, and pet supplies.
When winter weather occurs, drivers should be extra cautious around operating snow removal equipment. When encountering
a plow truck, drivers should stay at least six car lengths behind an operating plow truck and remember that the main plow is wider than the truck. Drivers should be alert since plow trucks generally travel much more slowly than other traffic. When a plow truck is traveling toward a vehicle, the driver should move as far away from the center of the road as is safely possible and remember that snow can obscure the actual snow plow width.
Additionally, drivers should never try to pass or get between several trucks plowing side by side in a plow train. The weight of the snow thrown from the plow can quickly cause smaller vehicles to lose control, creating a hazard for nearby vehicles. Drivers should never travel next to a plow truck since there are blind spots where the operator cannot see, and they can occasionally be moved sideways when hitting drifts or heavy snowpack.
Also, drivers should keep their lights on to help the
operator see their vehicle better. Drivers should also remember that under Pennsylvania state law, vehicle lights must be on every time a vehicle’s wipers are on due to inclement weather.
Motorists are reminded that the law requires drivers to remove accumulated ice or snow from their vehicle, including the hood, trunk, and roof, within 24 hours after the storm has ended. This applies to all vehicles, including commercial vehicles. Drivers in violation of the law are subject to a fine of $50. Additionally, motorists can be cited up to $1,500 if snow or ice is dislodged and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious injury.
For more information on safe winter travel, an emergency kit checklist, and information on PennDOT’s winter operations, including a video, visit www.penndot.gov/ winter. Additional winter driving and other highway safety information is available at www.penndot.gov/safety.
Pennsylvania has a network of shared-ride service providers dedicated to keeping older adults mobile, safe, and engaged in their community. This transportation program allows citizens age 65 and up to ride for free on a local, fixed-route service whenever local public transportation is operating.
Additionally, working with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and transit agencies, PennDOT recently developed an online tool called Find My Ride, which allows older drivers to access free ride services online. Find My Ride is designed to allow transit agencies to process applications more efficiently,
so users can access benefits more quickly. Find My Ride is available at www.find myride.penndot.pa.gov.
While every person ages differently, aging typically brings certain - sometimes subtle - physical, visual, and cognitive changes that could impair a person’s ability to drive safely. Older drivers and their families should work together to identify potential issues that may affect driving, outline courses of action to assist the older driver, and plan for when it is time to hang up the keys.
Signs that can indicate it may be time to limit or stop driving altogether include feeling uncomfortable, fear-
ful, or nervous when driving; unexplained dents or scrapes on the car or on fences, mailboxes, or garage doors; frequently getting lost and frequent “close calls” such as almost crashing; slower response times, particularly to unexpected situations; difficulty paying attention to signs or staying in one’s lane of traffic; and trouble judging gaps at intersections or highway entrance and exit ramps.
Older drivers and their loved ones are encouraged to review PennDOT’s Seniors Driving Safely publication series, which can be downloaded for free at www.penndot.pa.gov under Travel in PA by selecting Safety and then Traffic Safety & Driver Topics. These publications are intended to help older drivers assess their abilities and to offer guidance on next steps if a driver’s medical condition is reported to PennDOT. The series also includes a publication designed to guide family and friends of older drivers in conversations about deciding to stop driving, as well as information for health care providers on PennDOT’s medical reporting program. Several safe-driving habits, which should be routine at any age, may be especially

Shrimp, Feta, And Dill Spaghetti
While spaghetti is most often associated with Italy, pasta has deep ties to other Mediterranean nations like Greece and several territories of the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula. It has been enjoyed around the world for centuries.
The flavor profile of spaghetti can change significantly depending on which ingredients are added. For example, Spaghetti with Shrimp, Feta and Dill, courtesy of “Real Simple Dinner
Tonight: Done!” (Time Home Entertainment) from the editors of Real Simple, may take its inspiration from Greek cooking.
Spaghetti with Shrimp, Feta and Dill (Serves4)
Ingredients:
12 ounces spaghetti
1/4 cup plus
olive oil
Kosher salt and black pepper
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
3 ounces feta, crumbled (3/4 cup)
2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh dill

useful to older drivers. Drivers should plan ahead and make lengthy car trips during daylight hours. Morning may be best because people may not be as tired as they are in the afternoon. Drivers should avoid driving during rush hour, if possible, and avoid roads that tend to get congested. When driving long distances, especially in winter, drivers should call ahead for weather and road
condition updates. Drivers should look far down the road and make adjustments before encountering problems that may involve other vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, or animals. Maintaining a safe speed is important and depends on what the road is like, how well the driver can see, how much traffic there is, and how fast traffic is moving. Drivers should keep a safe distance from the vehicle
ahead of them. The “Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual” advises that drivers always keep a 4-second gap between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them.
Additional information on senior driver safety and mobility resources is available at both www.dmv.pa.gov/Driver -Services/Mature-Drivers and www.aging.pa.gov under Programs and Services and then Transportation.
4-H Program Seeks Volunteers
The Chester County 4-H Program is seeking new volunteers and 4-H clubs. 4-H is a youth development program for people ages 5 to 18. Volunteers are essential to the program and allow adults to share their hobbies with interested youths.
Projects vary widely and include sewing, arts and crafts, cooking, animal science and
outdoor adventures. 4-H volunteer opportunities range from coordinating monthly club meetings to leading one-time activities and projects.
A signature Penn State Extension program, Pennsylvania 4-H provides 78,800 youth participants with learning opportunities designed to help them develop the life skills they
need to contribute to their communities as children and adults. This effort is supported by 6,950 adult volunteers.
New volunteers and youth members are welcome to join the 4-H program. For more information on how to join or start a 4-H club, contact the 4-H office at chesterext@psu.edu or 610-696-3500.

In early 2019, Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy Sr., owners of Tannery Antiques, 148 E. Main St., New Holland, were contacted by members of the board of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The board wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings had found a new home near the front of the couple’s shop.
“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.
Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Soudersburg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils. He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United Zion Church.
The three murals stored in
the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter scene, which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated in a
layer of white. The summer scene, which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a one-room schoolhouse, and a swimming hole. Autumn shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhighways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.
Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind the pieces, noting they were painted in the living room
of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew 5:5, which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’” Dibartolo has studied the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that makes the paintings clearer from a distance than they are up close. Dibartolo noted the lavender hues of the sky in one painting and the shadows on the water in another. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she commented.
Dibartolo and Heagy would like to see the paintings go to an appropriate home within Lancaster County. To contact someone at Tannery Antiques, readers may visit www.real lancastercounty.com or search for “Tannery Antiques LLC” on Facebook.

AHA Advocates Hands-only CPR
During American Heart Month, February, the American Heart Association (AHA) is urging at least one person in every household across central Pennsylvania to learn hands-only CPR.
If a teen or adult suddenly collapses, make sure the scene is safe, then call 911 immediately and ask someone to get an AED, if available. Next, place one hand on top of the other and push hard and fast in the center of the victim’s chest at a rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute, until the AED or emergency services arrive.
Performing chest compressions to the beat of a familiar song is a good way to ensure they are done at the correct rate. Songs at the required tempo include “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash. More songs are available on the American Heart Association’s “Don’t Drop the Beat” Spotify playlist.
Anyone can learn handsonly CPR from a 60-second video available at www.heart .org/handsonlycpr.
Saving Strategies For Young Adults
When a person is young, saving money may be the furthest thing from his or her mind. Our Gap area church has a great opportunity for someone who has a passion and calling, to work with young children to prepare them for school. If you have a strong, vibrant Christian faith we would be excited to talk to you about a part-time position working with three year olds and preschool age children in our preschool program. Some early child education and/or experience working with young children in a teaching setting would be preferred.

easier to save when saving is attached to specific goals. While some may aspire to retire early, establish an emergency fund, or to purchase a home, others may want to save for an overseas vacation. Motivation to save can make it that much easier to do so.
It is important to determine where one spends the most. Saving money on smaller purchases will add up over time, but to really build a robust savings, it is important to figure out one’s biggest expenditures and how that spending be cut back to pad savings. The Logic of Money reports that the average American spends more than 60% of their income on housing and transportation. Figuring out how to cut costs in these categories can be a great way to save.
Young adults are tied to their digital devices and can find ways to make them work for them. Free cashback apps give people money back for various purchases. Some can be linked directly to a credit or debit card to have passive income deposited directly. With others, individuals can cash out as a direct deposit or via a payment app like PayPal.
U.S. News & World Report advises that individuals make it a point to put away $1 for every $3 earned into a savings account. That is a good measure for establishing a rainy day fund. If an individuals does not trust themselves to transfer the money, they can have a set amount automatically deposited from their paycheck into a designated savings account.
Consumers should treat credit cards like using cash. The “buy now, pay later” option is an attractive trap to fall into. Using credit cards often is a safer way to pay merchants, because others’ money is being risked rather than one’s own with a debit card. However, using credit can make it challenging to visualize what is actually being spent. Individuals should not purchase more than they can pay off within each billing cycle. Account alerts can be set up on a phone to let individuals know when they have hit their budgeted credit card spending limit. Individuals should also resist the urge to open and use too many cards.
Young adults can begin saving early with some conventional and highly effective strategies.
