Keeping Time
BY ANN MEAD ASH
TheGap Town Clock Association is preparing to celebrate an important milestone. “The last celebration was when the clock tower was 100 years old in 1992,” recalled Kathy Stern, secretary/treasurer for the association. Kathy explained that the clock dates back to 1872, but the 65-foot tower that holds the clock was built in 1892.
“The tower is 130 years old, but the clock is 150 years old,” she said.
To mark the occasion, the association will hold a celebration at the tower, which is located at the intersection of Route 41 and Bridge Street in Gap, on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1 to 5 p.m. Rep. Bryan Cutler will send a proclamation in recognition of the event. Light beverages and snacks will be served.
Kathy will have a membership
table set up at the event. A nominal charge is required to become a member of the association, which works to maintain the clock and tower. Kathy will also sell salmoncolored mugs with a picture of the tower on one side and notations about the age of the clock and the tower on the other side. Kathy’s husband, Gary, known for his artistic renditions of local buildings, is working on a print of the clock, copies of which should also be available for purchase at the celebration.
The clock was originally located on Penn Monument Hall (now home to the Town Clock Cheese Shoppe), located across Bridge Street from the clock. The brick building was named Penn Monument Hall because William Penn had made a historic visit to the area. Fifteen years after the clock was placed, the building was taken over by the sheriff. Concerned townspeople removed the clock from the building and hid it in a nearby ice house. In 1892, the clock was placed in the tower, but the location was threatened in 1953 when the clock tower appeared to be doomed by the widening of Route 41. Area citizens banded together to save the clock, and the Gap Town Clock Association was formed. The association was able to have the tower moved 75 feet to its present location.
Area resident Violet Baker was recognized for her efforts as a champion of the clock for many years. A plaque on the side of the tower, placed on Jan. 20, 2008, recognized Baker for her lifetime commitment to the Gap community and for her tireless effort in the preservation of the Gap Town Clock for more than half a century.
More information about the association may be found by searching for “Gap Town Clock” on Facebook, emailing kannstern@yahoo.com, or calling 484-340-0116.
Library To Present Di-Atglen Alley Wizard
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire, a celebration of a wizard-themed fantasy literature series, will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. by the Atglen Public Library (APL), 121 Main St., Atglen.
The event, which is open to people of all ages, will feature live entertainment, children’s activities and shopping. Attendees are encouraged to dress in costume. There is no admission fee, and most of the activities are free.
Upon arrival, attendees will receive a program detailing the activities.
“We will have big decorations marking the main entry this year,” explained APL trustee Erin Metzler, one of the event organizers.
“The librarians will have a stand where they will hand out the programs and little gift bags to the kids.”
Metzler explained that the term DiAtglen Alley is a spoof of Diagon Alley, a wizarding shopping district in London from the popular book series. “Just like last year, we will close

Most recently, Compeer presented its annual summer picnic at the Albert C. Miller Park in Exton. More than 30 people attended, enjoying box lunches, socializing and games, including cornhole. Some attendees also took walks around the park. Members of the Compeer advisory council helped with welcoming people, handing out lunches and supervising the games.
According to Sherry Thompsen, Compeer outreach coordinator, one attendee described the picnic as “the best day I’ve had in a long time.”
Prior to the summer outing, the Compeer Bowling and Pizza Party was held in March at The Palace Bowling & Entertainment Center in Downingtown, the organization’s first in-person event since before the pandemic.
Thompsen also announced that the international Compeer organization has adopted a new logo, which depicts the “O” in Compeer as heartshaped and a new tagline, “Mental Wellness Starts With Friendship.”
“Compeer International asked all affiliates to start using this new logo. It provides a consistent look for Compeer programs, regardless of location,” she noted.
As part of the program, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Pairs share activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie or going for coffee or lunch. Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional.
Compeer is always in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and have appropriate clearances. “We are in special need of older male volunteers age 55-plus,” Thompsen noted.
The Compeer program would like to remind individuals that people in the U.S. can call or text 988 if they are experiencing a suicidal, substance use and/or mental health crisis. This new number, modeled after 911, went live on July 17. It offers 24/7 access to trained counselors who can talk with the callers and also direct them to additional resources for mental health and substance use issues. “If someone is concerned about a friend or family member, they can use that number as well.” Thompsen noted.
Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP). It is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations.Formore information, including volunteer opportunities, contact Donna Kueny, program director, at 610-436-4445 or dkueny@mhphope .org. The food and the big tent where people can eat and play Quizzo will be in the library’s parkingAtlot.”the Wizard Academy, children will be able to make slime in the potions class and make crafts in the transfiguration class. There will also be face painting.
In Di-Atglen Alley, shoppers will find vendors selling wands and other handcrafted, wizard-themed merchandise, as well as butterbeer and sweets and treats.
Also located in Di-Atglen Alley will be the stage where visitors can watch a live owl show with Dawn White and a magic show with Professor Snark.
A costume contest will be offered for people of all ages at 1:30 p.m. There is no fee to participate, and prizes will be awarded.Therewill be two different scavenger hunts. The Sorcerer’s Scavenger Scramble is free and is a traditional scavenger hunt, where players are told what they are looking for. For those interested in a more challenging game, the Cursed Object Quest is designed to be a cross between a scavenger hunt and an escape room. Instead of a list of items to find, players will receive a clue sheet with various puzzles and riddles to solve that direct them to locations around the festival site. There will be a nominal charge per“Noplayer.matter what your age, you will find lots of fun things to do at the faire that are at no cost,” said Metzler. “Our sponsors are the reason we can provide so much to the public for free. County Works To Digitize Historical Documents
In less than two years, Chester County expects to have its most historic documents available online.
Thanks to improved scanning equipment, Chester County’s Archives & Records Services has accelerated the process of scanning and digitizing documents dating back to 1681. The project’s goal is to make the collection publicly available on the county’s website so that people can easily acquire historical information.
The county installed a new scanner in January 2020, just before the pandemic, making this project possible. To date, about 40% of the Archives’ collectionwhich includes both microfilm and
physical documents - has been digitized.Aclimate-controlled room at the county’s Government Services Center in West Chester houses the documents and keeps them stable. Temperature and humidity fluctuations degrade paper, so the storage room temperature always remains roughly 65 degrees with 45% relative humidity.Theupgraded scanner has a superior lens and creates images faster than the model it replaced, purchased in 2007. The new technology scans documents in color and at a higher DPI (dots per inch), so the image quality is sharper. In addition, technology has made storage space much less expensive, allowing easier storage of larger files.Cliff Parker, who served as the county’s archivist for 20 years before taking on his current role of Archives & Records director, noted that one of the documents to be scanned is the first Chester County court docket documenting the county’s earliest governmental activities from 1681 to 1697. A second corresponding volume spans 1697 to 1710. The docket records every function of county government, including row

offices, administrative functions, and court activity. Parker noted that some of the documents date to before William Penn first came to his colony in October 1682.
Commissioner Josh Maxwell added that the records include a variety of documents, such as tax records, Poor House records and property records. Chester County’s Poor House was established in 1800 in West Bradford for the employment and support of people in financial difficulty in the county. The facility served poor and elderly people with physical and mental disabilities.Chester County Commissioners chair Marian Moskowitz explained that the records being digitized are those considered to be historic, permanent records. While the county preserves every existing physical record created before 1920, retention policy changes meant that only certain documents were maintained after that time. Today, less than 10% of the records created by the county each year are considered a permanent record of historical value.
Commissioner Michelle Kichline said this conversion project is about access. The problem with storing records on microfilm, she said, is that the user needs a machine to look them up, and nobody is selling or repairing those machines as they break down. In addition, most of the county’s microfilm is stored offsite. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has a microfilm security storage program. If a user wants to view a document, the commission must make a duplicate and send it to Chester County, making for a lengthy process.
