The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will hold a Christmas bazaar at the Gap Fire Hall on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature shopping from local vendors, free children’s crafts, visits with Santa, a food truck and a sale of homemade baked goods. More than 20 crafters and artisans will be featured, selling items

he Parkesburg Lions Club is once again participating in the Adopt a Soldier Project by supplying Pennsylvania servicemen and women serving overseas with a package from home for the holidays. Boxes collected this year will go to troops in Kuwait and Egypt. Boxes will be mailed to the units in time for Christmas. “‘We Serve’ is our motto, and what better way than sending some PA love to a PA soldier who is serving very, very far from home?” said past Lions district governor Nancy Gauthier, chair of the Pennsylvania Lions Adopt a Soldier Project. The packages collected locally will be sent to an address that was provided by a Pennsylvania state battalion commanding officer. “(The

Items that should be placed in the boxes include food and snacks, toiletries, puzzle books, magazines, board games, handheld video games, decks of cards and DVDs. “Remember it could be a male or female soldier,” Gauthier advised. “Snacks; personal care items; crossword; find-a-word and Sudoku puzzles; playing cards; hard candy; gum; licorice; jerky; socks; bandanas; pens; writing paper; mints; nuts; crackers; trail mix; dried fruit; and magazines are just some ideas. Someone even added a small football and frisbee.” “They will not allow any aerosol cans, solid stick deodorants, fireworks, lighters, matches or alcohol,” she added, noting that boxes should be unsealed. “The boxes need to be inspected for customs to ensure they don’t have any restricted items.”

Members of Scouts BSA Pack and Troop 20 of Atglen collected food donations on Nov. 20 as part of Scouting for Food. The local Scouts joined other troops from throughout the country that participated in the event, which is an annual program of the Boy Scouts of America that began in 1985. As part of the program, local Cub and Boy Scouts leave plastic bags for their neighbors soliciting

Assistance was provided by Lions Club members and Gauthier’s family members, including her grandson Kaden Salada. To adopt a soldier, community members are asked to fill a box and to donate the $16.25 needed for postage. “The box needed is a Priority Mail medium-size flat-rate box,” explained Gauthier. “You can get the box from the post office.”

such as woodcrafts, deco pots for plants, crocheted items, home decor, wreaths, florals, wooden American flags, homemade fragrances and angels made from old dishware. Home-based business vendors will also offer items for sale, including Norwex cleaning and personal care products and LuLaRoe handmade screenprint clothing. Local small business owners who are part of the Lions Club will also set up tables. “It’s a business-oriented club, and they might have their own stands, but a lot of it will be craft tables,” said club president Steve Wenrich. “It is an opportunity for people to do their Christmas shopping from the crafters and artisans. It will be a fun holiday time.” In addition to snacks and refreshments that will be available at the fire house, the Tri-County Barbecue food truck will be stationed outside. Visitors will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets, and Santa Claus will be on hand and available for photos.

The troop collected 1,867 pounds of food items from homes in Atglen, Cochranville and Christiana, which were donated to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. The troop also held a Court of Honor to recognize all the merit badges and ranks that the Scouts earned over the past several months. Troop 20 had a busy spring and summer season starting with whitewater rafting down the Lehigh River in May. The Scouts took part in several camping trips, including their annual weeklong summer camp at Rodney Scout Reserva-

Crews are also forming for next summer’s two-week, high adventure canoe trips to Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada. The troop continues to take part in community service activities. Twice a year, volunteers participate in the Adopt A Highway program by keeping local roadways clean. The Scouts have begun their annual fruit basket sale. Anyone interested in purchasing fruit baskets should con-

tion in Maryland. At camp, the boys earned merit badges, worked on rank requirements and took part in recreational activities. In addition, a smaller crew of Scouts and adults traveled to Florida for a high adventure trip to Sea Base, where they sailed, scuba-dived, camped and fished. Scouts collectively earned a total of 78 merit badges over the summer, and those were awarded during the Court of Honor. Scouts achieving rank advancements are Gavin Preising, Scout; Thomas Donovan, Tenderfoot; Javon Jackson and Will Lazos, Second Class; Sawyer Johnson, First Class; and Jared Hodorovich, Life. The Sea Base crew received its Snorkeling BSA patches.

Those who donate boxes are also welcome to add their own personal notes. “Several people received thank you notes back last year,” said Gauthier. “The commander of the battalion sent me a really nice note thanking the Lions Club for

doing this and giving back. (He said) it was so much appreciated, and it came at the perfect time that they needed to get something from home.” Boxes will be accepted through Friday, Dec. 3. Those who would like to bring boxes to Gauthier’s home are asked to contact her at ngauthier@comcast.net or via the Lions Club Facebook page to arrange a drop-off time. Artist Blacksmiths Plan Gallery Meeting BY ANN MEAD ASH

“What’s really interesting with this craft is that it combines the skills of working with different metals, mainly steel, and the creative artistic design elements that people incorporate into the item,” said Luke Shultz, member of the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmiths’ Association (PABA). “We call ourselves facebook.com/townlively artist blacksmiths, as All types of metalwork will be on display at the Pennsylvainstagram.com/townlivelyepc opposed to the traditional nia Artist Blacksmiths’ Association gallery meeting. are open to the public. Meetings are often held at a member’s shop or historic blacksmith shop and include demonstrations of certain skills or projects. The gallery meeting, which is always held in December, is traditionally located in Paradise. “We call it our gallery meeting because it is a little different than the rest of our meetings,” said Shultz, who noted that the meeting is a showcase of metal-related items. “Members bring in examples of what they worked on throughout the year or collections they might have of antique tools or things they want to sell.” Another highlight of the event is the Ironmaster of the Day competition. “Any member can make an item designated for that competition,” explained Shultz, who said that the items are displayed at the meeting and voted on to determine which maker will be Ironmaster of the Day. This year’s designated item to create is a holiday wreath. “The person who makes (a wreath for the competition) creates their interpretation of a metal holiday wreath,” said Shultz. “They are all making the same thing, but there are so many variations on how people approach making that item.” According to Shultz, interest in the craft of blacksmithing has grown recently.

Treasury Warns Of Text Message Scam The Pennsylvania Treasury has advised state residents that scammers are using fraudulent text messages to target recipients of unemployment compensation benefits, potentially including normal unemployment compensation (UC), Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC). One message inaccurately tells recipients that their state-issued ReliaCard account has been temporarily frozen. The message then encourages recipients to clink on a link to verify their identity and card status. Individuals should not click on the link. Neither the

Pennsylvania Treasury nor the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry ever embed a link in a text message. Any text that includes a link and claims to be from these agencies should not be trusted. Individuals should note that it is important to never provide any personally identifiable information, user IDs, or passwords unless they initiated the conversation by contacting the agency directly. A copy of the full news release from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department is available at www.patreasury.gov by clicking on Newsroom and then the Scam Alert article.

WFCS Observes Pastor Appreciation Month

SALES EVENT!

In observance of Pastor Appreciation Month in October, more than 25 pastors and youth and children’s ministry leaders from local churches enjoyed a morning at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS). After a light breakfast, the guests attended the school’s chapel, which included songs, Scripture readings and a message. There were also special performances from the students, including the worship team, the vocal ensemble, prekindergarten and second-grade students and

the middle school boys’ Bible class. The visitors were then invited to share soft pretzels and lemonade with students from their congregations. WFCS, 795 Fallow field Road, Atglen, is a private Christian school serving children in preschool through eighth grade in the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Kennett Square, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts. For more information, Pastor Tony Stephens and his wife, Jami Stephens, from call 610-593-5011 or visit Stillwaters Presbyterian Church visit with three WFCS students from their congregation. www.wfcs.org.
