Palmyra

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Lebanon VA Medical Center (Lebanon VAMC) has announced that it was once again named the top VA Medical Center in the United States for patient experience. Lebanon VAMC officials will receive the award during the VA’s annual Customer Experience Symposium from Monday to Wednesday, Sept. 16 to 18, in Washington, D.C.

People come in and out of our lives, seemingly randomly and without explanation. Some touch us in profound ways, and when those people exit, they leave behind an unfillable void, a deep sadness. But there is also a stark realization that we are better people for having known them.

Sasha Coburn had that kind of effect on the Coburn family of Palmyra. The Coburns are both sad he is gone and grateful that he was a part of their lives.

“We’re just strong believers,” said Patricia Coburn, Sasha’s adoptive mother and the matriarch of the Coburn family. “He got the love of a family, which he never would’ve had. We took him and we loved him and we let him go. We gave him back to

his country.”

“He was very good for our family,” continued Patricia. “We all grew from it. We miss him so much, but we know he is with Jesus.”

A sergeant in the Ukrainian army, Sasha Coburn was killed in battle on Sept. 30, 2023, during his native country’s ongoing war with Russia. While details are few, Sasha is believed to have been in a ditch with other Ukrainian soldiers when he perished.

His body, believed to be in now occupied Russian territory, has never been recovered.

“His biological brother sent me a message on Facebook,” said Patricia. “My heart just sank. There were so many questions. Obviously, we were devastated. All the kids came home, and we just sat and talked about him. We

had a service of life for him, and we had so much support from the community.”

The Coburns initially met Sasha through a student exchange program. Following a lengthy international process, the Coburns had adopted Sasha, then a 16-year-old Ukrainian orphan, on June 15, 2016. With five biological children of their own, the Coburns made Sasha their sixth and eldest. It took some time for Sasha and the Coburns to become accustomed to each other, but once they did, Sasha was homeschooled and became involved in sports at Palmyra High School before graduating in 2019.

“We already had five kids. We weren’t looking to adopt,” said Patricia. “We felt the Lord telling us to adopt Sasha. He was loved in a very significant way. We

showed him love. He found Jesus here, and it made him a stronger person. He would’ve been there fighting, regardless.”

“We adopted him because we love Jesus first,” said Brian Coburn, Sasha’s adoptive father. “He was a gentle giant. He was strong like a bull. But he was just the kindest spirit, and there was a fire in there too. He had a rough life. He loved the people in his country. That’s what he went back for. That was his home. Everybody loved him there. He was loved there, and he was loved here.”

“Ukrainians are just so loyal to their country,” said Patricia. “(Sasha) went back to his country a couple of times. When war broke out (in February of 2022), he said he wasn’t going to come home. He was fighting for a cause he believed in.”

The Lebanon VAMC achieved the highest overall combined patient experience and employee experience scores of all complexity level 1 facilities in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This is the fourth consecutive year the local veterans health care system has received the national honor for patient and employee satisfaction. The facility moved from level 2 to level 1 this past year.

The facility scored in the top quintile in the Survey of Healthcare Providers (SHEP) overall rating of the provider, SHEP inpatient overall rating of the hospital, trust scores as measured through the Veterans Signals (VSignals) survey platform, and the All-Employee Survey (AES) scores for the Best Places to Work. The veteran trust score is a record high level.

Lebanon VAMC CEO and executive director Jeffrey A. Beiler II said, “Whenever I’m asked, ‘What is different about Lebanon?’ I always say the staff working at our medical

The NMSEF is one of Pennsylvania’s four regional science and engineering fairs - along with the Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and capital area events - and is one of six fairs in Pennsylvania affiliated with the world’s largest pre-college competition, the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The top two students’ projects from the senior division earn a place at the ISEF where students compete with 1,500 of their peers from around the world. The North Museum pays for registration, fees, travel and accommodations for

“North Museum’s CEO Andrea Rush is a Lebanon County native and a Cedar Crest High School graduate. Through our connections, we are both professionally and personally excited to bring this STEM education opportunity to Lebanon County,” said the North Museum’s director of development and strategic partnerships, Scott Downs, who is also a former Lebanon County resident and past publisher of the Lebanon Daily News. “As a leader in STEM education and advocacy, the North Museum believes that every sixth- through 12th-grade student in the IU13 region deserves an opportunity to compete. Raising student interest in STEM careers is critically important for the future of our country and our world.”

The NMSEF has been in existence for more than seven decades, offering STEM opportunities for thousands of young researchers. The North Museum has managed the event since 2009.

Check out a variety of vehicles, enjoy some food and socialize with neighbors when the Manheim Sertoma Club hosts its second annual Classic Car Show. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association, 3133 Pinch Road, Manheim. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the show will kick off at 10 a.m., running until 3 p.m.

11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Kona Ice will be on-site from noon to 3 p.m. Kona, a national organization that supports communities all over the country, will give back 20% of its sales to the Sertoma Club.

The North Museum’s leadership also offers support to educators to assist their students in finding a project, developing a research plan and supporting student research.

“The NMSEF breaks down barriers between education and industry for students and provides those from underserved and underrepresented populations with a platform of entry, creating connections with both teachers and STEM professionals,” said Downs. “Our judges consist of STEM educators and professionals from area schools, universities and companies. Working together, we can continue to inspire passion and curiosity in the next generation of STEM leaders.”

Registration for NMSEF is free of charge and has an October deadline. For more information on the event, visit www.North Museum.org.

“We welcome car owners of any type of car, classic, street rod, truck and motorcycle, including spectators to attend this special event, which is supporting three nonprofit organizations: the Manheim Community Life Group, Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community and Manheim Ministerial Assistance Fund,” said Wendy Wood, second vice president of the Sertoma Club. “Given Manheim Sertoma’s mission, ‘Service to Mankind,’ our organization recognizes each of these nonprofits who provide opportunities for members of our community and give hope to people in need.”

Allison Entertainment will provide music during the show. The Manheim Sertoma Club will sell cheeseburgers, hot dogs and french fries. Members of the club are also currently selling chicken barbecue dinner tickets for lunch at the show. Barbecue tickets must be purchased by Sunday, Sept. 1, and the dinners will be available for pickup the day of the event between

“Our club will have goodie bags for car owners of the first 200 preregistered cars and give away multiple door prizes every half hour throughout the event,” Wood shared. “We have more than 30 awards, which include two handmade awards by Shop51 and one handmade glass award by Stiegel Glassworks.” More than $2,000 in restaurant gift cards will be awarded, as well as other items such as a handmade glass bowl by Stiegel Glassworks.

Each of the beneficiary organizations will have representatives on-site at the car show. Home on Ferdinand, part of the Manheim Community Life Group, is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing transitional housing and essential resources for women and children facing homelessness.

“Through comprehensive support services, Home on Ferdinand empowers residents to break the cycle of homelessness by addressing root causes,” said Regan Learn, house and community connections coordinator. “The impact on our community is profound, as (Home on Ferdinand) not only helps individuals regain their independence, but also fosters a sense of belonging and resilience.”

Student recognized at state competition

Leonidas Neifert, 15, won seven awards at the Pennsylvania State Trap Shooting Competition, held from June 8 to 16 at the Pennsylvania State Shotgunning Association complex in Elysburg.

The rising 10th-grader at Manheim Central High School has only been trap shooting since in February when on a whim, he decided try the activity with four other Manheim Central students. Leonidas started trap shooting at an introductory program at the Palmyra Sportsman Association, and he was hooked.

Leonidas took part in his first registered shoot on Feb. 18, achieving his first 50 targets needed. In a singles competition, participants shoot from five different angled positions that are 16 yards from the trap house. In a handicap competition, each participant’s distance from the trap house is based on his or her skill level. Leonidas is currently shooting from the 20-yard line, and he hopes to someday earn the distance of 27 yards.

Leonidas was the sub-junior champion in the Bradford Gun Club Single, where he shot 98 of 100 targets; the South End Gun Club Handicap, shooting 92 of 100 targets; and the Elysburg Handicap, shooting 92 of 100 targets.

He was the Academic, Integrity, Marksmanship (AIM) sub-junior champion runner-up in the Stephanie

He joined the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) and began working toward being able to compete in the state event. To compete at the state level without receiving a penalty, participants must shoot 1,500 registered targets in singles competition and 1,500 registered targets in handicap competitions prior to the state events.

Retirement Community, a 50-bed nonprofit skilled nursing facility, has a unique mission to provide care to seniors and people with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay for the cost of care. “Each year, Mt. Hope gives over $1 million in charitable care,” shared Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “Local Manheim and broader Lancaster and Lebanon County families approach Mt. Hope in desperation because they have been unable to locate services for loved ones due to lack of resources and funding.”

Manheim Ministerial Assistance Fund, which is administered by churches within the Manheim area,

supports Manheim community residents with a gift up to $250 to help pay for things such as rent, groceries or utilities in a time of need. “This fund relies on contributions from the community, either from churches, businesses or individuals,” said John Laughlin, pastor of Salem United Methodist Church. Wood expressed thanks to the sponsors, club members and friends who have worked together to make the car show possible. He was also the sub-junior champion runner-up in the Krieghoff Handicap, shooting 85 of 100 targets. His participation in the Krieghoff event included a shoot-off with three other competitors.

In the Pennsylvania State Singles Championship, he took down 191 of 200 targets, making him the Class D champion. In the Pennsylvania State Handicap Championship, he shot 91 of 100 targets and was the sub-junior champion runner-up.

During the week, Leonidas was also able to shoot 75 clay birds in a row.

Leonidas has learned that competing in trap shooting sports is more of a mental game than a physical one. He also noted that trap shooting is an inclusive activity. He hopes

that someday there will be a team in Manheim.

Leonidas plans to compete in the Maryland State Shooting Competition from June 26 to 30.

Tips for smoking food

There are many ways to impart flavor to foods when cooking at home. Smoking is among these methods. Like other approaches to cooking, smoking involves a learning curve that may include some trial and error. Grilling enthusiasts who want to try their hand at smoking food can keep these tips in mind.

When smoking, remember the mantra “low and slow.” The method involves cooking foods at low temperatures for long periods of time. When smoking, unlike with traditional grilling, the food should not be directly over a flame. Smoking stones can be used to absorb and deflect heat, and similar products can accomplish the same goal. That absorption and deflection allows foods to cook slowly, which in turns helps impart the smoky flavor.

Cooks may consider adding water to create moisture. Long cooking times can dry food out, but a water pan inside the smoker can ensure foods remain moist.

Seasoned wood chunks and wood chips can add flavor to foods, and such products are readily available at many grocery stores and home improvement retailers. The choice of chunk or chips depends on which type of smoker individuals have. The grilling experts at Weber advise using chips when smoking lightly for less than an hour. If smoking for an hour or more, Weber advises using chunks.

Cooks should monitor temperature. If temperatures rise too quickly, foods can quickly become dry and overcooked, but if temperatures do not rise, foods can sit on the grill for hours on end. Each recipe is unique and will suggest an ideal temperature range when cooking foods slow. That may require staying home and monitoring the grill temperature, periodically adjusting vents to maintain a steady temperature. Many smokers now enable users to monitor temperatures via a smartphone app.

When obtaining a smoker, cooks may

easy to transform grills into makeshift smokers. In addition, smoker attachments that can be attached to gas and charcoal grills can enable a less-expensive introduction to smoking foods. Smoking is one way to cook foods over an open flame, and a few strategies can help people get started.

tribute to health issues. UnitedHealthcare noted that myopia, also known as nearsightedness, has significantly increased over the last few decades, and this condition is connected to increased near work and the use of digital devices at close range.

To help protect their eyes, people should reduce excessive blue light exposure by following the 20-20-20 rule when using digital devices, which means taking a 20-second break every 20 minutes to focus on something 20 feet away. Likewise, spending more time outdoors can help reduce the risk of developing nearsightedness.

People should watch for common symptoms of nearsightedness such as blurred vision when looking at distant objects, the need to squint to see clearly, eye strain, and occasional headaches. Vigilance is particularly important for children because myopia can appear at an early age.

People should have a comprehensive eye exam, which can detect health problems that a screening or a school vision exam may miss. A comprehensive exam may even help to detect some health issues not usually associated with the eyes such as diabetes and certain types of cancers.

Guest speaker Scott Mingus will present “Flames Beyond Gettysburg,” The program will also be livestreamed via Zoom and Facebook, and the recording will be posted at www.hersheycwrt.org after the meeting.

In late June 1863, two powerful columns of Confederate troops approached the Susquehanna River in southcentral Pennsylvania. One, under Lt. Gen. Richard Ewell, marched northeast from Franklin County through Carlisle toward Harrisburg, and the other, under Maj. Gen. Jubal A. Early, headed eastward through Gettysburg and York toward Wrightsville and Columbia.

The upcoming slideshow talk will cover Early’s expedition as his division seized control of Gettysburg after a series of skirmishes on

June 26, 1863, and then two days later occupied York, the largest Northern town to fall to the Confederates during the war.

Early ransomed York for $100,000 and supplies and surrounded the town with artillery and troops. Hastily organized state militia defended the river crossing at Wrightsville against John Gordon’s Georgia brigade and then burned the world’s longest covered bridge to prevent the Confederates from passing into Lancaster County, from which Jubal Early had hoped to threaten Harrisburg.

The meeting is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact Ricky Hollis at rickyhollissr@ gmail.com or visit the aforementioned website.

Outdoor exercise ideas

Getting a gym membership is one of the first things that comes to mind when a person desires to get in shape. Exercise goals can be achieved at gyms and fitness clubs, but they are not the only locations where people can get on a healthy track.

People who turn to the great outdoors for their fitness needs may find nature to be an effective setting for a workout.

Water sports are perfect warm weather activities that build good upper body and core strength. Kayaking and paddleboarding also offer cardiovascular benefits by getting the heart pumping. These water activities offer a great way to exercise that often do not often seem like exercise at all.

Many public parks have exercise equipment along trails or walking paths. Individuals can follow a circuit with little to no rest in between. If a park does not have dedicated equipment, one can use kids’ jungle gym equipment to perform

Vendors sought for craft bazaar

LDAA seeks to connect with graduates

The Lower Dauphin Alumni Association (LDAA) is exploring a new way to connect with graduates via email. The new email communication list allows graduates to subscribe for free email updates from the association about upcoming events and other items of interest. To register, complete the form at www.lower dauphinalumni.org.

The LDAA was founded in

1989 and is an independent organization that is not funded by the school district. Its mission is to collect and preserve historical artifacts, design fundraising projects to support student activities and academics and plan programs by which alumni continue their involvement in their alma mater.

Alumni-related questions may be emailed to ldalumni@ldsd.org.

pull-ups, incline pushups, lunges, and additional strength-training exercises.

Hiking is another potential outdoor fitness activity.

Taking a long, vigorous walk across the varied terrain of a trail or footpath provides cardiovascular exercise and can strengthen the lower body.

People may also try climbing or scrambling. Climbing involves working muscles all over the body, and it requires balance and flexibility.

Outdoor sports activities abound. Volleyball, baseball, tennis, pickleball, and other organized sporting activities can offer aerobic and strength-training benefits.

Sports typically are played among a group, and the sense of companionship and good-natured competition that often develops in such settings can keep participants engaged and having fun.

The great outdoors can be a great place to combine exercise with enjoyable activities.
