Penn Manor student helps lead Mini-THON
her friend
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
In memory of Megan.
Senior Haley Frey decided to become a student leader of Penn Manor High School’s Mini-THON club to honor the memory of her late best friend Megan Martin. Megan, who would have been a senior this year, died during her sixth-grade year.
“I lost my best friend to cancer,” Haley said. “That’s why I got involved.”
Penn Manor’s Mini-THON club raises funds for Four Diamonds, an organization that helps kids with cancer and pays for all the expenses insurance doesn’t pay for, adviser BJ Kramer said.
“Me and a couple of my close friends went through (the loss of Megan) together,” Haley said. “It was a very, very hard time, but coming into high school
knowing this club was making such a difference for kids like Megan, families like hers (inspired me). I saw the impact Four Diamonds had on her life. Her family did not have to worry about anything except being with their daughter, which is such a burden that is taken care of for them.”
Haley frequently visited Megan at the hospital in Hershey and got a firsthand look at the good Four Diamonds does. “I met a lot of the people who worked for Four Diamonds and the doctors,” Haley said. “Megan was happy. She was going through chemotherapy, but she was still herself, which was incredible to see. I took it for granted a lot when I was younger. Looking back on it now, Four Diamonds made such a difference in her life that I will never understand, but to be able to be

a little bit of a stepping stone for her in making that happen is just incredible.”
Penn Manor will celebrate its
Four Diamonds fundraising efforts during a Mini-THON Community Night from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, in the gym at the school,
100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will include games, food, laser tag and a bounce house, along with information

If you are 58 years old or older and enjoy staying active, the Lanco Senior Softball league is looking for you.
Men and women within a 100mile radius of Lancaster city who are interested in playing can contact league president Dave Dean at 610-334-1124 or email treasurer Dave Zerbe at dzerbe @comcast.net.
“We are looking for players,” said Zerbe, who resides in
Strasburg. “Anybody interested in playing should call or email and give us your contact information so we can follow up with you. But if there are people who can’t play anymore, but would like to help coach, we’d be interested in those people.”
Each team has a coach and an assistant coach, and some serve as league officers and board members.
Lanco Senior Softball, which started in 1990, currently has about 200 players divided

among 12 teams split into two divisions, American and National.
Last year’s teams were Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant (home field at Rapho Park), LH Brubaker Appliances (Garrett Field), RH Cooper & Son (Rapho Park), Speedwell Construction (Rapho Park), Ephrata Good’s Disposal (Ephrata Middle School), Kautz Construction (Garrett Field), Strasburg (Strasburg Jaycee Park), TJ Rockwell’s
(Rapho Park), Caruso’s Pizzeria (Rapho Park), GE Richards Graphic Supplies (Garrett Field), Mid Penn Bank (Ephrata Middle School), and Steel Fab Enterprises (Garrett Field).
Players do not have to play with the team based closest to their homes.
“It’s competitive,” Zerbe said. “These fellas, most of them have been playing some sort of organized ball in high school
right through college and in different softball leagues as they got older and still enjoy the game.”
The median age of players in the league is 64, Zerbe said.

Caruso’s Pizzeria senior softball team won the National Division Playoff Championship last season. The team includes (front, from left) Ebiel Morales, Norm Summers, Kevin Weinhold, Mike Hostetler, Fredy Lopez, (middle)Joe Ives, Phil Maxey, David Garcia, Steve Murphy, Keith Ingram, (back) Bob Ricedorf, Rich Lucchese, Eric Kronawetter, Kevin Allen, Greg Henkel, Angel TorresPerez, (not pictured) Jim Weller, Tom Hollow, Edwin Rodriguez, and Jon Fodor.

The seven-inning games will start at 6 p.m. and will generally be over by 7:15 or 7:30, Zerbe said.
It is a modified league, which means pitchers throw as fast as they can while using a bowling-style motion, Zerbe explained. There is no sliding or base stealing. American Softball Association (ASA) rules and ASA umpires are used.
“We do have fun, but it can get very competitive,” said Zerbe. “You have different calibers of

teams. You have some teams where guys are just trying to have fun and enjoy the game. If they win, they win. If they lose, they lose. Other guys like to win and win it all.”
In addition to Rapho Park in Mount Joy, Ephrata Middle School, Garrett Field in Willow Street, and Strasburg Jaycee Park, Stauffer Park in Lancaster is used for championship games and could host regular-season games this year.
There were 17 regular-season games last year, with that total depending on the number of teams in the league. The regular season is slated to finish at the end of July, followed by the double-elimination playoffs with all teams qualifying and seeded based on record. A champion is crowned from both divisions.
Zerbe is hoping to attract more players for the 2025 campaign. “It seems like we’re struggling with having fellas in their early 50s who are excited about continuing to play softball,” he said. “Some of the guys are coming back and playing, but recruiting new fellas seems to be a little harder.”
The requirements are simple. “You have to have a love of the sport, baseball or softball,” said Zerbe. “You have to love the sport to want to play. You have to have a little bit of competitive spirit and ability to play. That being said, if you want to enjoy and meet some good fellas who are unified in their ability to play and want to play, then come join us. It’s good exercise. The older we get, the more we move and the more we stay active, the longer we’re going to live. If you can come out and one night a week you run and bat and throw the ball, it keeps your blood pumping and it keeps you young. Come out and have a good time and enjoy the camaraderie. You can meet people and become friends.”
about Mini-THON.
“It’s for the people in the community, kids, families of the high school students to come and see all the work that the high school kids have been doing all year to raise money for Four Diamonds,” Kramer said. “See what Four Diamonds is all about and what these kids at Penn Manor are doing.”
Led by Haley, classmate Emily Mummert, and Kramer, there are 50 students in Mini-THON leadership positions, and more than 100 students are members of the club.
“It’s incredible,” Haley said. “It’s being part of something bigger than yourself, which is something not a lot of high-schoolers have the opportunity to do on such a large scale.”
Kramer is in her 10th year as club adviser. “I have such a heart for this because I can’t imagine going through this, being a parent
myself, but also encouraged and inspired by the strength of these families that have to go through it,” she said. “Any way we can support them, I’m down for doing it. It’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of stress, but I know it’s worth it because we have families in the district who struggle with things like this. We’re not just doing it for something out in the world that we never see. It’s our own Penn Manor family that we’re helping.”
Following the community night event, students will have their own celebration, which will begin at 11 p.m. on Feb. 14 and run until 5 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15.
“It’s an event for the kids to celebrate the hard work that they’ve done all year,” said Kramer. “It’s a celebration kind of like THON, but definitely not on that scale. The students don’t see a dime of what they raise. The whole fundraising effort is very selfless.”

During the event, Kramer and a couple students will donate their hair to make wigs for cancer patients. There will be games, sports tournaments, trivia, plenty of food, laser tag, a bounce house, dancing, and a sundae bar.
“It’s just a lot of stuff that high-schoolers would be interested in doing,” Frey said. “Lots of sporting events.”
Penn Manor’s Mini-THON holds several fundraisers throughout the year. On Math Stall Day, math teachers count donated coins, which stalls class. The most recent Math Stall Day raised more than $4,000. Other events include FFA line dancing, food sales, and a
Powder Puff game. “Different clubs and organizations jump in to help out,” said Kramer. “It’s a big team effort.”
People may make tax-deductible donations year round on Donor Drive by visiting https://fourdiam onds.donordrive.com, clicking Find an Event, and searching for “Penn Manor High School.”
A faculty vs. students basketball game will be held in the Penn Manor High School gym at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, which is Megan Martin’s birthday. The admission cost will go to Four Diamonds. Anyone who donates toys to the Megan Martin Toy Drive will receive free admission to the game.

ideas infused into the food.
Local organizations purchase sponsorships, which is a main source of revenue. Schreiber’s Hero sponsors are Faulkner, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Highmark/PennState Health, and Miter Foundation. There will be silent and live auction items, including a seven-day trip to Africa. A DJ will supply music.
The inaugural Philanthropist Award will be presented to Dr. Samuel and Dena Lombardo, huge financial supporters of Schreiber for many years and key supporters of a recent expansion.
A highlight of the gala is the unveiling of the yearly Schreiber Ambassadors, who share their stories of perseverance.
Visit https://schreiber pediatric.org for more information or to purchase tickets to the gala. Tickets may be purchased until Friday, Feb. 14, or until they are sold out. Donations may be made up to March 10.
Pam and Greg, the latter of whom has been a board member for eight years, are in their third year as gala co-chairs. Their older son, Alex, went to Schreiber for 18 years. “That’s one of the reasons we’re involved,” Pam said.
Alex graduated from Temple University. Now 30 years old, he works as an architect. “Alex has physical disabilities, so Schreiber was who we went to for speech, physical and occupational therapy, and that’s what helped him to be able to go to college and be independent,” said Pam. “That’s why
my husband and I have an affiliation with them, to give back to an organization that gave to us for so many years.”
The Oleksas feel companionship with other families that have the same need.
“That’s now our goal as parents, to give back to other families, so they, too, can have the same opportunities with their child to be an independent person in the community, living independently,” Pam said.
The entire family is involved. All three children are Hempfield High School graduates. The Oleksas’ daughter, Ashley, a teacher who was inspired by Alex’s journey, is on the gala committee. The younger son, Nick, lives in Dallas but is returning home to attend the gala.
“It’s our family mission to support this wonderful organization,” Pam said. “And we have a ton of friends who support us in this mission, some on the board and committee.”
The gala is a major fundraiser for Schreiber. “The reason that we do the gala every year is we’re trying to make up for the $2.5 million deficit for services that are provided to the 2,000 children who receive services every year,” Pam said. “Our goal is to provide services to as many children as possible, even if they don’t have any ability to pay, their parents don’t have the ability to pay. We still want to provide care to those children.”
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, provides occupational

therapy, physical therapy, speech, day care, infant care, and preschool for children with developmental disabilities, developmental delays, or acquired injuries.
“We have such an outpouring of support from the community,” said Pam. “The generosity of our community been amazing the last two years my husband and I have chaired.”

Pam says the committee is hoping to have 400 individuals attend the event. “Our gala has continued to grow,” said Pam. “We were at a smaller venue two years ago. Last year, we were at the Imperial for our 40th. We needed to find a larger venue. It’s just been very positive, the growth.”
Pam also credits the Schreiber fund development
team consisting of Danielle Sunday and Kristen Masengard. “There is a team of committee members who play a huge role in gathering sponsorships, silent auction items, and live auction items, which are the things that make our event a success,” Pam said. “The big thing is we’re so fortunate our local community supports the needs of the local children. Every year, it’s heartwarming for me to see that outpouring of support.”

Tuition discount available at Drexel
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has announced a new feature of its relationship with Drexel University. Graduates of Thaddeus Stevens College are eligible for the Drexel Promise, which provides students who have earned an associate degree with a renewable scholarship for 50% decreased tuition as they pursue a bachelor’s degree at Drexel.
Some graduates from Thaddeus Stevens College pursue additional higher education within five years of graduating, and the college maintains several articulation agreements

with other institutions to facilitate smooth transitions into additional learning opportunities. The college’s articulation agreement with Drexel was first announced in 2021 and seeks to enable students with an associate degree in computer and network systems administration or business administration to seamlessly pursue a related program at Drexel.
The Drexel Promise tuition discount is available to graduates holding two-year degrees from an accredited community college. With this program, Drexel works to reduce financial barriers

and their resulting inequities for students. First offered to students in specific regions, the program was recently expanded to apply to students nationwide. Those receiving the discount can still receive other state or federal funding assistance. Applicants to a full-time, on-campus program should indicate their associate degree; no additional forms or applications are required. Criteria for admission at Drexel must be met. Full-time enrollment and a minimum grade point average of 2.0 must be maintained to receive the discount.
Bus trip to flower show slated

The Town & Country Garden Club of Lancaster is sponsoring a bus trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show on Monday, March 3. The bus will depart from the Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, at 11 a.m. and return at approximately 8 p.m.

The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show is a horticultural event and fundraiser featuring displays by floral, garden, and landscape designers. The theme for 2025 is “Gardens of Tomorrow,” and the event will explore how gardening can help to create a healthier planet. The cost of the trip includes transportation, the driver’s tip, and snacks. The cost does not include entrance to the flower show, as some people may choose to explore Philadelphia instead of attending the show. Proceeds from the trip will benefit the Town & Country Garden Club of Lancaster’s scholarship fund and club activities.
The deadline to register is Friday, Feb. 21. For more information, call or text Carol Feister at 717-435-8678 or cjfeister @comcast.net.
