The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will kick off the memorial service. The group participates in the ceremony every year, and the event organizers typically invite a local veteran to speak. According to Circle Legacy Center’s mission statement, the nonprofit’s goal is “to represent Native America to our local businesses, organizations and educational institutions, both the enduring traditions of the past as well as their thriving and challenging contemporary culture.”

Despite having no official headquarters, Circle Legacy Center strives to bridge the gap between the Native American community

and the public by partnering with local organizations, attending events and offering monthly programs in downtown Lancaster.

Circle Legacy Center will host its next Second Friday program from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. During the presentation, “Muhlenberg Recreating Eden,” Brown will portray botanist and preacher Henry Muhlenberg to highlight his life and work. Muhlenberg served as the pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Lancaster city from 1780 to 1815, and he became the first president of Franklin & Marshall College, which was called Franklin College at the time. Brown will explore Muhlenberg’s prolific research and catalog of local flora and fauna through a first-person account.

the community, the organization’s monthly meetings and special events provide a space for participants to learn from other gardeners and exchange techniques and tips. Manor Township resident Ruth Davis, who joined the club 25 years ago and currently serves as its president, said that the camaraderie between members is her favorite aspect of the Lancaster County Garden Club. “We share a wealth of knowledge, but I enjoy making friends, talking and visiting their gardens,” Ruth added.

Although Lancaster County Garden Club’s membership includes avid horticulturists and plant enthusiasts from across the county, the group holds its regular meetings at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Meetings take place on the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m., and each meeting features a topic related to horticulture. During meetings, members display items such as floral arrangements, potted plants and paintings of garden landscapes, club’s leadership provides updates on upcoming field trips and garden tours. Each meeting includes a presentation from a guest speaker centered around the theme of the month.

Ruth’s husband, Bob Davis, coordinates the Lancaster County Garden Club’s programs and annual events, including an annual banquet and a corn roast every August. Ruth and Bob share a love of conifers and trees, and they tend to 16 acres of land near Millersville. “We have a bit of an arboretum,” Bob said.

The Lancaster County Garden Club was started by a group of businessmen who enjoyed growing roses, and it was known as the Men’s Garden Club until 2009. Since 1951, the club’s members have tended the rose garden in Buchanan Park - a scenic location that former mayor Rick Gray referred to as the most beautiful place in Lancaster city.

Veterans Day

Sen. Scott Martin’s office, County Commissioner Josh Parsons and Rep. Ismail Smith-Wade-El.

Millersville Borough held its first Veterans Day ceremony in 2013 as part of the dedication of the memorial at Freedom Memorial Park. The memorial includes bricks that have been engraved with the names of veterans from the local community. Local residents may purchase bricks from the borough to honor a friend or a family member who has served in the military; each brick is dedicated at the park during the annual ceremony. The memorial currently includes 844 engraved bricks.

“I think it’s a great way for Millersville Borough to honor our veterans here and in the greater community,” said borough manager Rebecca DeSantis-Randall. “We have a beautiful memorial at the park, and so many people and organizations show their support every year.”

Every year, multiple local businesses and organizations support the event in various ways. A wreath donated by Members 1st Federal Credit Union will be placed on the memorial during the ceremony, and the golf cart used for transportation to the site will be provided by Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory. The refreshments offered after the

service have been donated by John Herr’s Village Market. Additionally, members of the Conestoga River Girl Scouts make jacket ornaments from poppies to hand out during each ceremony.

Woodland Tribes, and he will give a talk about what Thanksgiving Day means to Native Americans. Lee will also explain the meaning of the songs and offer interactive demonstrations of Native American dancing.

“With November being Native American History Month, we wanted to do something festive,” said Victoria Valentine of Millersville, who founded Circle Legacy Center in 2007. “A lot of our programs can get pretty deep and upsetting when talking about Native American history, so we wanted to make this program about music, dancing and having fun.”

Circle Legacy Center’s Second Friday programs highlight a variety of topics related to Native

American culture, history and challenges that Indigenous tribes face in modern times. In the past, the series has explored historical events and discussed movements such as Every Child Matters, which seeks to raise awareness of the treatment of Native American children in residential schools.

This year, Circle Legacy Center partnered with Franklin & Marshall College to assist with Reckoning with Lancaster, a project supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that aims to shed light on Lancaster’s complex history and relationship to local Native American communities. Through the partnership, members of Circle Legacy Center such as Lee and board president MaryAnn Robins teach classes about Native American culture at Franklin &

Marshall College.

In addition to its educational programs and partnerships, Circle Legacy Center frequently participates in community events held by organizations such as the Conestoga Area Historical Society, Blue Rock Heritage Center and Mennonite Life. Members of Circle Legacy Center typically attend events such as Washington Boro Heritage Day and Maize and Snitz Fest to offer demonstrations of Native American traditions and crafts.

Circle Legacy Center’s Second Friday programs will continue with an arts and crafts event in December and a movie night in January.

Presentation to focus on barns

The Millersville Area Historical Society will host a presentation, titled “The Old Historic Barns of Lancaster County and Other Areas of Southeastern Pennsylvania,” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. The doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Greg Huber, an architectural house and barn historian and a student of forests, trees and wood - major components of historic vernacular buildings. His slideshow presentation will cover some early scenes of the

Public Auctions

Pennsylvania German culture for context and then transition to a discussion of the major barn types. The major focus of the talk will be on people’s extensive departure from the cultural ways of the last half of the 18th century and all of the 19th century - a time when people’s foremost involvement was with nature. A question-and-answer session will close the meeting.

Huber is a consultant and principal owner of Past Perspectives and Eastern Barn Consultants, both historic and cultural resource companies based in Macungie. Since 1974 he has specialized in pre-Civil War-era house and barn architecture of Holland Dutch and Pennsylvania Swiss-German areas. He has documented more than 8,000 vernacular buildings, including more than 5,000 homestead

barns. He is also the author of more than 340 articles on barn and house architecture, and he published a barn research journal. He wrote a 240-page book, ”The Historic Barns of Southeast Pennsylvania: Architecture & Preservation, Built 1750-1900.”

Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.
